We're back, baby! Since it was just Halloween, and we've all been gorging ourselves on sweet treats, we've probably also experienced the inevitable crash that comes after a huge sugar high. And it just so happens that the aftereffects of eating too much junk food is exactly the topic of today's episode, because that's the defense that lawyer settled on in one of the most notorious crimes of the 1970s. So grab yourself a cream-filled cake and listen up!Rob teaches Ray and Daniel (yes, a third host's joined the gang!) about San Francisco city council member Dan White, a decorated former fireman and San Francisco city council member who eventually murdered both Harvey Milk, California's first openly gay elected politician, and SF mayor George Moscone; the political dealings and fallout that led to the disintergration of Dan White's political career and might have motivated his crimes; Daniel's lack of Twinkie expertise; how a newspaper cartoonist spun a throwaway comment about White's diet into a national meme; how a phrase from South Park has replaced the Twinkie Defense in modern parlance; and later cases that have deliberately used "Twinkie Defense" tactics to secure acquittals for their clients. If you like what we're doing, please support us on Patreon, or you can subscribe to our bonus content on Apple Podcasts. This episode we're tackling a heavier topic that will not be easy to talk about, but also how one of my favorite games ever has helped me through difficult and tumultuous times. We'll go into heavier topics about my own anxiety and depression, but will also try and talk positively about how things can work out for the better, and how games can be a help to those who struggle with hard times. It's been a while, so we have a lot to talk about this episode! As it turns out I have a fascination and a vested interest in the characters I spend time with in the games I play. This time we go into the complicated franchise of Kingdom Hearts, the fascinating puzzler that is Gorogoa, some old school platforming fun, and much more. It's a marathon that is just about two hours, so buckle up, we're talking some games! Sequels are something that are usually taken with caution, or are held at a glance. Circumstances in this episode brought me to think about sequels in general and how they deserve more respect. So in this episode, we're talking about one of my favorite RPGs, Ni No Kuni, one of my favorite animation studios, and the sequel to that game that is destined to be a sequel, in every sense of the word. Let's put all the differences aside, and love some sequels for what they are. We're taking a trip down memory lane, as we look at the cultural impact that the seemingly small property known as Pokemon has has on the masses of the world. Going all the way back to the origins of the franchise, and how those origins effected the youth of the day, as well as me personally. In part two of Jack the Ripper we cover the murder of the rough and rowdy Annie Chapman, just where the idea of Gentleman Jack came from, and the Double Event in which Jack the Ripper took two victims in one night. Better to “speak five words” that give instruction, Paul explains, “than ten thousand words” that mean something to you but are useless for everyone else. Richard and Fr. Marc discuss 1 Corinthians 14:1-19. Prompted by listener feedback, this week’s episode begins with a review of the function of sin in the Torah and its implications for Paul’s gospel.
