In 2022, Bryan Kohberger murdered University of Idao students Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Ethan Chapin, and Xana Kernodle at a home in Moscow, Idaho. Kohberger pled guilty and received four life sentences. He was also ordered to pay restitution to the victims' families for funeral expenses. Recently there has been a renewed interest in the Son of Sam Case in the form of documentaries, the latest by NETFLIX. Many are subtitled, “The Lost Tapes,” a reference to recordings of multiple interviews with David Berkowitz in Attica prison, shortly after he was incarcerated. Luckily for us, the tapes were never lost! They were recorded by Rochester, New York, Democrat and Chronicle reporter, Jack Jones, and are thankfully still in his possession.Jack, a repeat guest here on Murder Most Foul, joins us today to share his thoughts on his interviews with David Berkowitz and the murders that gripped New York City in the Summer of 1977, hyped by the tabloid media.

Between 1976 and 1977, New York City was gripped by fear as a mysterious killer called the 'Son of Sam' stalked the streets. When David Berkowitz was arrested, the truth was even stranger than anyone imagined. This episode explores the twisted mind behind one of America's most infamous serial killers.

Fantasy and horror can be extremely dangerous for children. And, if parents can't distinguish between the demonic and the godly in fantasy novels, they sign their kids up for some pretty horrible stuff. Serial killers, Richard Ramirez, David Berkowitz, Adolf Constanzo, Sean Sellers, Henry Lee Lucas, and others have admitted to influence from Satanic materials and movies. Satan is real, and playing with this stuff leads to bad things. But the grace of God is greater, as in the case of the salvation of David Berkowitz.

In the early hours of July 29, 1976, 18-year-old medic-in-training Donna Lauria and her friend Jody Valenti, then a 19-year-old nurse, were sitting in Valenti's blue two-door Oldsmobile Cutlass in the Bronx, after a night dancing at a disco. Without warning, a man approached their vehicle, pulled a gun from a paper bag, and fired multiple shots, striking Lauria in the back and killing her instantly. Valenti was shot and wounded in her leg, but survived the attack. This brutal and seemingly random crime marked the beginning of a violent spree of attacks that would keep a terrified New York on edge for more than a year until David Berkowitz, originally known as the ".44 Caliber Killer" because of his weapon of choice, was captured by authorities in August 1977.Berkowitz later became notoriously known as the "Son of Sam" serial killer, after the pen name with which he signed letters he left at the scenes of his crimes for police or mailed to journalists. Not only was Zeman friends with Maury Terry towards the end of his life, but Zeman was the man that Terry willed his entire life's work to -- every document, photo, scribble, phone number... everything. And as an inside scoop, I was able to pick Josh Zeman's brain about this over a Skype call many years ago. Doctor of behavioral science and pastor Michael Caparrelli spent 100 hours with convicted serial killer David Berkowitz in an effort to better understand the reasons he committed the notorious Son of Sam murders, which terrorized New York City during the late ‘70s. His highly compelling book on the subject is called The Monster Mirror. Michael Caparrelli's approach is unique. Not only is he a doctor of human behavior, he's also pastor who regularly lectures on mental health in churches, schools, and prisons throughout the country.
