Final Fantasy V got a sequel, but it's not the kind you'd expect. Released as a four-part anime OVA in 1994, Final Fantasy: Legend of the Crystals takes place 200 years after the SNES game and follows a new cast of heroes trying to protect the elemental crystals. Despite its connection to Final Fantasy V, this OVA looks, sounds, and often feels detached from the game that inspired it. It has touched us on a personal level, it has earned its place in horror history, and it is one of the few franchises in Hollywood to never release a bad installment. We talk about whether ‘Evil Dead Burn' continues the trend and why it will probably always be the most polarizing entry in the series. A few weeks back we talked about how ‘Evil Dead Burn' had to be trimmed in order to get an ‘R' rating. We wondered how bad it could have been and even tried to figure out what extreme horror even means today. As it turns out, ‘Evil Dead Burn' is incredibly graphic. Was it too much or perfect for an ‘Evil Dead' movie? There has been lots of talk about how ‘Evil Dead Burn' does not fit into the franchise. In 1996, NiGHTS into Dreams asked players to fly through somebody else's dreams instead of walking through their own story, and it became one of the strangest, most singular experiences the Sega Saturn ever produced. In this episode, we trace how Yuji Naka's original idea about chasing rainbows became a dream world instead, and why Sonic Team resisted building the game in 3D until the story demanded it. We break down the psychology behind NiGHTS' genderless design, drawing on the real research of Carl Jung, and the long trial and error process behind the Saturn's own analog controller, including the day Steven Spielberg got his hands on an early prototype before almost anyone else did.
