Mayor George Moscone was assassinated in the San Francisco mayor's office by Dan White, a former member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, on November 27, 1978. And then White walked down the hall and also shot Supervisor Harvey Milk—in White's former office. Lincoln Mitchell rescues crucial details about Mayor Moscone from the shadows of this tragedy, and reminds us of Mayor Moscone's contributions to the development of modern San Francisco. First, George Moscone was a trailblazing progressive and powerful state legislator who was instrumental in passing legislation on issues ranging from LGBT rights to funding for school lunches. Later, Moscone's 1975 campaign for mayor was historically significant because it was the first time a major race was won by a candidate who campaigned aggressively for expanding civil rights for both African Americans and LGBT people. In addition to being a successful politician, Moscone was a charming and charismatic bon vivant deeply embedded in the fabric and culture of San Francisco. He grew up the only son of a single mother in Cow Hollow when it was a working class, largely Italian American neighborhood, and he became the kind of politician who knows bartenders, playground attendants, small business owners, and neighborhood activists in every corner of the city. Mitchell demonstrates how Moscone—through his work in the State Senate, victory in the very divisive 1975 mayor's race, and brief tenure as mayor—was a key figure in our city's evolution. Join us in person to find out why the politics surrounding Moscone's election as mayor, governance of the city, and tragic death are still relevant today. A Humanities Member-led Forum program. Brands today have endless choices to communicate. As budgets are always limited, two key questions are What is the best combination of media? and What makes our creative effective? The answer is complex and therefore it needs very clear thinking and experience. One person that can provide both is my guest Dan White. Dan has a career that includes decades as an insights professional, another decade as a Chief Marketing Officer and a third one as a brand advisor. Dan co-developed BRANDZ, the world's biggest brand equity measurement system and his thinking has shaped the design of leading copy test and brand tracking systems. He has advised famous, billion-dollar brands on how to thrive and his summaries and trademark drawings which he published in a series of books and on LinkedIN are praised by some of MARKENKRAFT most prominent English speaking guests like Jenni Romaniuk, Koen Powels, Paul Feldwick or Mark Ritson.

Welcome back to The Lab, we're talking about a topic that's on every Tottenham Hotspur fan's mind: the prospect of Daniel Levy selling a 25% stake in the club to a potential Qatari investor. We sit down with Dan White, a Consultant in Asset Management, to discuss what would this deal mean for the future of Spurs? Could it be a stepping stone toward a full takeover, or is it just a strategic partnership to help the club compete at the highest level financially? We'll explore the power and influence a minority stake can have, and what this could mean for the club's day-to-day operations, from transfer spending to long-term branding strategies. With Qatari investors already involved in European football through Paris Saint-Germain, could we see a global shift in Tottenham's appeal? And how might this investment line up with Financial Fair Play regulations? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

On November 27th, 1978, former San Francisco Board of Supervisors member Dan White walked into City Hall and murdered Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk. White was angry about Moscone's decision not to reappoint him to the Board after he resigned earlier that month. Harvey Milk had urged the mayor not to reappoint White. Join Mike and Gibby as they discuss Dan White. George Moscone was thought by many to be a good mayor, and Harvey Milk was one of the first openly gay elected officials in the United States. Their murders were a blow to the City and its residents. Harvey Milk was revered by most in the gay community and was often referred to as the mayor of Castro Street. Harvey Milk worked hard to pass anti-discrimination ordinances and fought against all propositions that would harm the LGBTQ community. You can help support the show at patreon.com/truecrimeallthetimeVisit the show's website at truecrimeallthetime.com for contact, merchandise, and donation informationAn Emash Digital productionSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the 10th study session on Michael Meiers' Was Jonestown a CIA Medical Experiment. This infamous mass murder has countless parallels to our recent literary selections - Columbine, Michael Swango, and The Hart murder-suicide. The Rev. Jim Jones, a White man born in a Racially Restricted Region of Indiana, took a thousand people from California to Guyana, South America. On November 18th, 1978, Jones killed nearly all 1,000 of his mostly black followers and orchestrated the assassination of Congressman Leo Ryan. Some were shot, but most were poisoned with cyanide, just like "Double-0 Swango." For nearly 100 years, this event described as a bunch of brainwashed black loons following a White charlatan to their death in the jungle. Meiers' work suggests something far more nefarious. Last week, Meiers detailed the assassinations of Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk - both classified as White. The White male assassin, Dan White, was branded an "all-American" - which basically means White, and received way more sympathy than all of the hundreds of murdered black Jonestown survivors combined. White employed the "Twinkie Defense," alleging that after binging on junk food the evening of November 26th, a sugar stupor the following day caused him to mindlessly slaughter two White elected officials using hollow point bullets. He reloaded between the murders - and waved to future mayor Dianne Feinstein. White gays rioted in San Francisco to display their outrage over the lenient sentence White received - when he could have landed the death penalty. Meiers suggests that Jones was motivated to kill Mayor Moscone because he knew about the Peoples Temple's crimes and might snitch to investigators of the Guyana carnage. The prosecuting attorney, Joseph Freitas, was roundly criticized for his efforts and subjected to daily reminders and suspicion that he deliberately botched the 1976 investigation of voter fraud involving the Peoples Temple (and Mayor Moscone). Listeners and Gus T. think Meiers failed to present sufficient evidence of Jones' involvement in the murders and/or his motivation to kill these 2 White Men. However, there are many other reports that discuss this extraordinary bit of California history. #BlackPantherParty #TheCOWS15Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#
In 1978, when Dan White took office, the political arena in San Francisco wasn't just cut-throat, it was outright murderous. The motives behind the assassinations of Harvey Milk and George Moscone were veiled under many agendas and have been the source of many different theories. In all the speculation, one thing is certain, this dirtbag's motive wasn't the Twinkies his defense would later become known for. Show Notes Episode 447: Tell Him About the Twinkie This week Host Dave Bledsoe insists he cannot be legally responsible for this bar tab because he was drunk when the charges were incurred! (The bartender dismissed the case with prejudice, meaning the bouncers threw him in the dumpster out back. Again.) On the show this week we examine how a snack cake entered the lexicon of American jurisprudence. (Hint: It was the media.) Along the way we learn why Dave was such a fat little boy! (Little Debbies ARE delicious!) Then we explain the history of the Twinkie, which has absolutely NOTHING to do with the court case we eventually get around to talking about! (This is a very circuitous episode.) Finally we get into the court case in which case the aforementioned Twinkie is tangentially relevant. (We have a formula, folks.) We talk about the San Francisco murders of Harvey Milk and George Moscone. But mostly we talk about the defense their murderer Dan White used in court. (Ergo, the Twinkie Defense.) Our Sponsor this week is Low Rent Legal, because even bad lawyers are still technically lawyers. We open the show with an explanation of the Twinkie and close with Larry Groce, who has a problem. As a general rule, analysts are drawn to precision: let's understand the business problem and then go figure out how the data can be acquired and crunched to provide something specific and useful. Fair enough. Where, then, do pencil and paper and 10-second sketches fit in? Or hastily and collaboratively drawn flippy chart or whiteboard sketches? We could draw you a picture to explain, but podcasts are an audio medium, so, instead, we brought on the illustrious illustrator, consultant, and author, Dan White. From triangles, to rolling snowballs, to trees, to Venn diagrams, to the conjoined triangles of success, this episode paints a pretty clear picture of the power of the quick sketch! Huckleberry Youth, the non-profit providing care and housing for underserved youth, celebrated 50 years back in 2017. In Part 1 of this episode, we meet Huckleberry consultant/advisor Denise Coleman and the organization's CEO/executive director, Doug Styles. Denise was born at what is now Kaiser's French Campus on Geary. Denise, who is Black, shares the story of the hospital making her dad pay cash for their labor and delivery services, while it was obvious that white folks were allowed to make installment payments. Born and raised in the 1950s and Sixties, Denise and her family lived in the Haight/Ashbury neighborhood, as it was known then (now we call it Cole Valley) on Belvedere Street. She has three sisters and a brother, her dad worked two jobs usually, and her mom stayed home. She describes a childhood that was fun, filled with activities like roller skating, skateboarding, and homemade roller coasters. Denise was a teenager during the Vietnam War and took part in protests. She describes a history of friction with her mom. When Denise was 16, one of her sisters OD'd on drugs. Still, despite the trauma that came with that, she graduated high school from St. Mary's in 1973. At this point in the podcast, Denise rattles off the San Francisco schools she went to. After high school, she joined some of her cousins and attended the College of San Mateo. Denise never thought about or wanted to leave the Bay Area, she says. In an apartment on the Peninsula, she and her cousins had "the best time." After obtaining a two-year associate's degree, Denise says she wanted to go to SF State, but didn't connect with it, and so she started working instead. For two years, she flew as a flight attendant for the now-defunct Western Airlines. After that, she collected debt for a jewelry store, then worked as a credit authorizer for Levitz Furniture in South San Francisco. Denise says she got hung up in the crack epidemic in the Eighties. She started with cocaine, and that led to crack. She was an addict for eight years. She got herself into a rehabilitation program at Delancey Street and stayed in the program for seven years. Her time started in SF, then took her to Santa Monica, North Carolina, and New York state. In 1998, Denise decided to leave Delancey Street. She got a call from Mimi Silbert, the Delancey founder, with an offer to work at their new juvenile justice program in San Francisco. Denise said no at first, partly because she wanted to stay in North Carolina. But after some persistence from Silbert, in 1999, she said yes and came back to her hometown. After seven years away, The City had changed. And so Denise helped to establish Delancey Street's Community Assessment and Referral Center (CARC). After its first year, the organization realized that they didn't have the capacity to run the program. Delancey Street asked Huckleberry Youth to take it over, and this is how Denise ended up at Huckleberry. Doug Styles was born and raised in the Richmond District. He was too young to remember the 1960s and mostly grew up in the Seventies. Doug says he had a lot of fun as a kid, describing riding his bike to the beach and back by himself. He shares the story of going to a late movie in the Mission, so late that when he got out, there were no buses. And so he walked home through the Mission, through the Fillmore, to his home in the Richmond. He also rattles off San Francisco schools he went to, including Lowell. Doug was in school when the SLA kidnapped Patty Hearst. He was at Everett Middle School when Dan White assassinated George Moscone and Harvey Milk. He speaks to tensions in The City around this time, and Denise joins in to talk about the day of the assassinations. Doug graduated high school in 1983 and went to UC Santa Cruz, where he majored in theater. He moved to Massachusetts, where he found work in a theater. After a short time out east, he came back to San Francisco and tried unsuccessfully to get into grad school. So he enrolled in a masters program at CIIS for drama therapy. Following that degree, Doug went back east, this time to Connecticut to work at the VA's National Center for PTSD. After another return to the Bay Area, he got his doctorate in clinical psychology. At the VA, Doug had worked with adults, but the jobs he found here had him working with youth. He had a job on the Peninsula for 10 years, during which time he became a father to two kids, which he says changed him more than anything else. One day he saw that the Huckleberry Youth executive director was retiring. Doug applied and got the job, and has been with the non-profit ever since. Check back next week for Part 2 and more on the history of Huckleberry Youth. Photography by Jeff Hunt We recorded this podcast in December 2023 at Huckleberry Youth's administrative offices on Geary.
