Loose Ends is in Hebden Bridge this week, a town made famous by the BBC drama Happy Valley, but you might also recognise the place and its glorious scenery from Last Tango in Halifax, Gentleman Jack or The Gallow's Pole. Clive will talk to local resident and bestselling novelist Joanne Harris, maybe best known for Chocolat which was adapted into an Oscar nominated film of the same name. Her latest book The Moonlight Garden is a fantasy set in a "long ago and far away" version of London and fits right into the wildly popular "romantasy" genre - a good fit for a town renowned for its quirky ways and alternative lifestyles. Also in the show, the acclaimed comedian and actor Richard Blackwood, best known for roles in Hollyoaks and EastEnders as well as on stage, is out on the road and passing through town on a stand up tour promising heavyweight laughs and no messing. TV presenter, GP and host of Europe's most popular wellness podcast Dr Ranjan Chatterjee will be easing us all into the New Year, just about the time when we all begin to fall off the New Year resolutions wagon and we'll be hearing about what happened to his own long held ambition to be Jon Bon Jovi. And award wining stand-up comedian and Hebden resident Nina Gilligan will explain why her new show is called Goldfish. Music from former I am Kloot frontman John Bramwell and band The Full Harmonic Convergence and also from all female Indie-folk band The Deep Blue. Presented by Clive Anderson Produced by Olive Clancy

Sapphism, the Cult of the Clitoris, coded diaries and a bower of bliss - Philippa Gregory tells the story of women who love women, and those who tried to stop them. We hear from famous lesbians including Queen Anne and Gentleman Jack and less famous lovers rescued from the footnotes of history.Joining Philippa to discuss the history of women who love women are:TikTok stars Caitlin and Leah and Professor Laura Gowing, who teaches women's history and queer history at King's College London. Normal Women: 900 Years of Making History is Philippa Gregory's radical retelling of our nation's story – not of the rise and fall of kings and the occasional queen, but a history of the millions of women missing from the record: wives and workers, viragoes and angels, female husbands, priests and pirates. For this episode, I'm joined by Rachel Vorona Cote (@RVoronaCote), author of the excellent book Too Much: How Victorian Constraints Still Bind Women Today to talk about the concept of “too muchness” (or, how social norms and expectations constrain women's bodies, minds, and sexualities). Specifically, we looked at too muchness and the BBC series on HBO Gentleman Jack, a series based on the diaries of Anne Lister, aka “the first modern lesbian" who lived from 1791 to 1840. We talked about too muchness and: Anne Lister's gender and sexuality, women's mental health and the threat of institutionalization, and lots more. It was GREAT.Get Oh, I Like That merch here! On today's episode, I talk to actress Emma Paetz. Originally from Edmonton, Alberta, Emma realized she wanted to act for a living while au pairing in Paris. She moved to London where she studied at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama and was primarily a theater actor for a long time. While she's had roles in shows like The Looming Tower and Gentleman Jack, her first starring role was as Martha Kane in the canceled-too-soon show Pennyworth, all three seasons of which you can still watch on HBO Max! Happy Valley is finally back for a third and final series, hooray, so Hannah leapt at the chance to chat to its creator, the writer Sally Wainwright. They talk about the return of Catherine Cawood and why there might be life in Gentleman Jack yet. Mickey's been on the Zoom with comedy double act Norris and Parker – Katie and Sinead to their pals – to talk sirens (the female kind), witches, friendship and poo. In Jenny Off The Blocks, Jen's got news on what's coming in the first sporting quarter of 2023. In BT we're talking about that broken necklace, a crisis in pathology and Macron (any excuse). And in Rated or Dated, we're wondering if time has been kind to Good Morning, Vietnam.* Norris & Parker: Sirens is at Soho Theatre, Wed 11 to Sat 14 Jan, 10pm. sohotheatre.com/shows/norris-and-parker-sirens/Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/standardissuespodcast. Dame Vivienne Westwood died yesterday at the age of 81 but she has been called the ‘undisputed Queen of British Fashion'. She made her name with her controversial punk and new wave styles in the 1970s and went on to dress some of the biggest stars in fashion. She was well known for her androgynous designs, slogan T-shirts and irreverent attitude towards the establishment and would use her platform later to bring the causes she cared about like climate change to the forefront. Barjis Chohan is a fashion designer in London who got her first break fresh out of college working with Dame Vivienne Westwood The multi Bafta-winning BBC drama Happy Valley returns to our screens on New Year's Day. It's a long awaited third series – the first came out in 2014, and the second in 2016. It centres on police Sergeant Catherine Cawood (pron. Kay-ward) - played by Sarah Lancashire - and her family in West Yorkshire and is the brainchild of writer and director Sally Wainwright, whose other TV credits include Last Tango in Halifax, Scott and Bailey and Gentleman Jack. Krupa speaks to Sally, who is considered to be one of our greatest television dramatists. Hundreds of servicewomen have experienced sexual abuse during their training at The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, according to Salute Her UK. Their figures show that 177 women have sought help for cases spanning more than 20 years. Paula Edwards, CEO of Salute Her UK discusses the ‘toxic culture' of sexual assault in the military. Salute Her UK is the sister charity of Forward Assist - which supports military veterans struggling to adjust to civilian life. It is the only UK gender-specific support service to offer therapy and interventions for survivors of in-service sexual abuse. Even if you don't know her name, you will almost certainly recognise her face. A former supermodel Czechoslovak-born Paulina Porizkova appeared on the covers of numerous top magazines around the world during the 1980s and 1990s, including Vogue, Elle, Harper's Bazaar, Glamour and Cosmopolitan. In 1988 she became one of the highest-paid models in the world as the face of Estee Lauder. She also acted in many movies and TV shows and was on the judging panel on cycle 10 of America's Next Top Model. Her novel, A model Summer, was published in 2007. She has now written a memoir, No Filter: The Good, the Bad, and The beautiful. 2022 marks thirty years since Queen Elizabeth II used the term annus horribilis (worst year) in her Ruby Jubilee speech to describe a personal low point. As we approach the New Year, some of us may, instead of celebrating, be looking back at our own personal annus horribilis. But how do we cope when all the bad news seems to come at once? And after a worst year, how do we feel hopeful for a better one? Emily Dean is a radio host and author of Everybody Died So I Got A Dog. Ella Risbridger is a food writer whose books describe how she found solace from grief and mental illness through the comfort of cooking. They both join Krupa Padhy to discuss how we can cope with the lowest points in life. The Law of Surprise has been called in Cintra...and on our podcast! But don't worry, the only thing we're rewarded with is an unexpected bottle of Gentleman Jack, which we drink a bit too generously as we unpack The Hexer's sixth episode, “Calanthe.” We also weigh in on the latest Blood Origin trailer, speculating about what awaits us in the upcoming spinoff and predicting which characters are going to steal the show (Meldof, definitely Meldof). And speaking of predictions, we make a deliciously dirty one about what we'd like to see in episode seven. What can we say? Our whiskey may be a gentleman...but we never claimed to be.
Are you a card carrying Daughter of Bilitis? This week Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with writer and English teacher Kirsty Loehr (@KirstyLoehr) to talk about her book, A Short History of Queer Women, which teaches readers about the women throughout history that were very much not “just friends” in a way that is both informative and incredibly funny. Although the historical stories of queer women tend to be depressing, Kirsty imbues her work with humor that really helps to showcase who these women were rather than focusing on the tragedy of their circumstances. If you've ever wondered where some of the lesbian stereotypes and jokes we use today originated from, this book is one you need to pick up. Queer women have been around forever. We didn't just disappear after Sappho and reappear with Ellen, and yet much of our history is ignored or purposefully re-written to be less queer than it was. For example, the Daughters of Bilitis invented the idea of the card-carrying lesbian. Not only did they invent the very first lesbian magazine, but they also had membership cards and a manifesto and everything! They were very dedicated to the cause. Queer people have always been incredibly inventive and creative. Going back all the way to Sappho, she literally invented the guitar pick so that she could cut her nails to pleasure women while maintaining her ability to play the guitar. Ingenious! On behalf of musical queers everywhere, thank you Sappho. If you enjoyed Gentleman Jack, you won't want to miss us talking to Kirsty about Anne Lister and the way the show captured the experience of being a lesbian in that time period where most people could not even conceive of the idea of two women being anything but friends. We also talk about former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and the incredibly romantic letters she used to exchange with her “friend” Lorena Hickok (whom she nicknamed Hick). They were clearly having a love affair and yet people still deny it to this day. We mourn for the more explicit letters that Hick actually burned rather than choosing to expose Eleanor. Surely if those letters had not been burned, there would be less of a debate around whether they were actually a couple. It is important to look back on the history of queer women and to learn about the sapphics who helped us get to where we are today. They could never have even imagined a world where they could marry and have a family with another woman and to forget their contributions would be a disservice to queer women everywhere. Gays of the Union unite! Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) are back for a sixth season of the little lesbian podcast that could. We are excited to recap all the biggest gay moments from the past year. Almost every show we talk about has already been cancelled, but we need to talk about them anyway! We kick off with discussing First Kill which was absolutely feeding our Buffy roots. Lesbians will always love a vampire and we are absolutely here for the cheesiness of it all. Then, we get into Gentleman Jack which was completely chaotic lesbian drama the entire season. There is just nothing more relatable than having a totally unhinged ex that is perpetually in your life. Next we dive into Our Flag Means Death, which is everything we could want from a pirate show, because pirates are canonically gay and you cannot tell us otherwise. Then we get into Only Murders in the Building, which finally fulfills our gay dreams in Season 2 by putting Mabel together with Cara Delevingne's character. We are really loving this trend in recent media where the queerness is just accepted and not a big deal. No one really has to worry about coming out and the story doesn't revolve around that. We would be remiss if we didn't discuss Killing Eve and the catastrophic finale. We were shocked to be thrown backwards into the BYG trope after coming so far in queer media since the horrors of 2016. Next we get into Yellowjackets which has some very strong queer representation. We finish up by talking about The Wilds which we are in denial about losing just as we were getting closer to seeing Leah and Fatin finally get together. Wynter is out of the country, so Karen invited her longtime gaysian/theysian pals, Summer Kim Lee (a cultural critic and UCLA professor), and JJ Chan (an artist and designer based in Brooklyn) to talk about the highly anticipated gay(sian) rom-com, Hulu's Fire Island. The three talk about some of their own summer gaycations together and apart, while diving deep into the details of Fire Island down to its most resonant moments with Austen's Pride & Prejudice, to what JJ calls the “Cherry Grove aesthetic” of Margaret Cho's house, despite the film's setting in the Pines. Plus: Karen takes her wife Sarah to Disneyland for her very first visit to the Magic Kingdom, JJ gosses about “eyebrow gate” on Gentleman Jack, and Summer FINALLY gets into Survivor after 42 seasons. And, nuo-lingo from a real life millennial and three #thatgirl summer jams!
