Where these writers would be in the immediate orbit of other Sci-Fi writers, such as Scientology founder L-Ron Hubbard, via a Los Angeles based Sci-Fi writers club. In fact, that Sci-Fi writers club leader, editor, publisher, and literary agent for many of these writers in the club, a Hollywood legend named Forrest J. Ackerman would even claim that this writers club were both engaged in Thelema and Scientology! The specific type of Thelema was the OTO - Agape Lodge run by infamous occultist and rocket engineer, Marvel "Jack" Parsons.So, does Marvel comics owe its namesake to Marvel "Jack" Parsons? Do we see tribute to Parsons even in DC Comics' "Suicide Squad"? Isaac Stewart, once an independent author and artist, now serves as the Vice President of Creative Development at Dragonsteel Entertainment. Isaac designed and illustrated the interior art for Brandon Sanderson's “The Way of Kings,” including the Alethi Women's script, maps, Shallan's and Navani's notebook pages, and additional artwork. He also created the interior art for the Mistborn series, featuring the Steel alphabet, maps, and Allomantic table. Stewart is closely linked to two Cosmere characters: Nazrilof, a character he created and partially based on himself, and the cartographer Isasik Shulin, whose name derives from Isaac's. Beyond his contributions to Sanderson's works, Isaac is writing books, creating cartography, and designing book covers. He collaborated with Shawn Boyles on the webcomic “Rocket Road Trip.” Isaac and his wife, Kera, joined Dragonsteel Entertainment around 2013, with Isaac hired as an in-house artist before the publication of “Words of Radiance.” Isaac attended the Life, the Universe, & Everything (LTUE) annual booksales event, where he gifted the podcast host a copy of his book “Monsters Don't Wear Underpants” and which became part of this podcast discussion. The rise of Christianity is a great puzzle. In 40 AD, there were maybe a thousand Christians. Their Messiah had just been executed, and they were on the wrong side of an intercontinental empire that had crushed all previous foes. By 400, there were forty million, and they were set to dominate the next millennium of Western history. Imagine taking a time machine to the year 2300 AD, and everyone is Scientologist. The United States is >99% Scientologist. So is Latin America and most of Europe. The Middle East follows some heretical pseudo-Scientology that thinks L Ron Hubbard was a great prophet, but maybe not the greatest prophet. Joining us this week for the second time is ex-OSA Scientologist and whistleblower, survivor, teacher, blogger, independent journalist and researcher, and survivor advocate, Scott Gordon!  If you've been listening to this show for a while, you've seen many examples of how cults hide in plain sight where the only people who see their shadows are the victims. Scientology is a cult we have all heard of and the mystique behind it involving the infamous L. Ron Hubbard, high profile actors straight out of Hollywood, and people in positions of power undoubtedly leaves a lot to the imagination. It's a looming topic I've been wanting to cover since beginning this podcast and I'm grateful to have met Scott who has unique insight into and about Scientology from his personal experience working within the church. He was trained in Scientology's infamous intelligence bureau, the “OSA” aka the ‘Office of Special Affairs' and became more of an ‘insider' than most ground-level staff ever do. He has a blog called ‘Watchful Navigator” where he documents and whistle-blows his harrowing experiences in his years in the Church of Scientology and shares insider information on topics related to what he uncovered during and after his time in the Church of Scientology and since awakening to Scientology being a cult back in 2006. The thing I appreciate the most about Scott's testimony and insight is that he's able to share two sides of the story - the good and the bad, the truth and the lies - so that we can understand why so many have been intrigued by AND deceived by Scientology. If cults were all bad, people would have no interest in joining.
