Animotion's Bill Wadhams returns to the show to deep dive their excellent comeback album from 2017, Raise. I see this album as a perfect example of what legacy artists, especially ones from the 80s, are capable of doing in this day and age. It's an incredibly strong set of tunes that not enough people know about. Bill explains how the album came to be and the stories behind the songs. This month’s guest on Living A Vocal Life is Bill Wadhams, one of the lead singers from the 80s synth-pop band, Animotion whose song Obsession landed in the top 10 in countries around the world in 1984.I’ve known Bill for years, but recently we had a chance to get to know each other better on a tour he’s dubbed, The Genius Insanity Tour, otherwise known as Lost 80s. In 2018 alone, our band’s played 22 cities together in three months. As he puts it, “The genius part is getting all the bands together. The insanity part is what happens when all the bands get together.”Bill is a multitalented artist. Since his MTV days, life has been a series of creative projects, from his work as a songwriter, to stints as a graphic designer with companies like Nike and Citigroup. His latest foray is into the world of musical theater, where he’s found a home both as a singer and creator. Whether he’s performing, composing, or telling a great story, Bill is a natural. For full show notes, transcriptions of this episode, and more offerings for singers, you can visit my website HERE.You can find Bill on Facebook, Instagram, and TwitterOr at these websites: Bill Wadhams, Animotion. The songs from this episode are “Raise Your Expectations” and “Everything,” and are from Animotion's CD Raise (used with permission.) On this episode of World of Noise, DJ Bob Ham celebrates the 35th anniversary of the first album by new wave band Animotion with the help of Bill Wadhams, the band's co-founder. They talk about the group's history, break up and the legacy of their huge hit "Obsession."
I catch up with Paul Engemann, who fronted the band, Device, in the mid '80s. Paul tells me why Device, who still enjoys a cult following, only released one album. Following Device's breakup, Paul replaced Bill Wadhams in Animotion. He talks about his time in the band. Paul enjoyed a partnership with Giorgio Moroder which featured "Scarface (Push It to the Limit)", from the movie and "Reach Out", the theme to the 1984 Summer Olympics.
Lost 80's Live features some of the most recognizable acts from the 80s on one stage for one night only on September 20! Bill Wadhams of Animotion is representing the U.S. on the tour and he chats with us about starting a band in the 80s in the L.A. music scene and how New Wave music came about.
Episode 58: Forgotten 80s - Aztec Camera, Two Minds Crack, Red Flag, Animotion It's Memorial Day weekend here in the States, but that hasn't stopped Brian and Sarah from putting together another episode. This one is based on a listener idea; Charles Christiphe wrote in and suggested an episode about forgotten songs of the 80s. Brian and Sarah liked the idea a lot and decided to choose two songs each to discuss. Thanks, Charles!! Sarah's first selection may not be forgotten in the UK, as it reached the top 20 back in 1983. However, it failed to appear on any American charts, so she stands by her choice - especially since Brian had never heard the song until last year. The other three songs are arguably more obscure, but both hosts manage to find a good deal of information about the artists and the songs to share in this episode. Each song has a video to talk about as well-- although Brian was disappointed to realize he had a false memory of one of them. Also in this episode: Brian actually passes up another chance to launch into another mini James Bond podcast! His excuse: with their air conditioning currently broken, the poor boy was "Crazy from the Heat!" And how did Sarah manage to tie this David Lee Roth/Van Halen reference to one of the bands she selected for this episode? Aztec Camera - Oblivious Two Minds Crack - Cry Cry Cry Red Flag - Russian Radio Animotion - I Engineer Bonus Feature: Sarah's Secret Song Snippet The first installment of this new feature produced a winner quite quickly (congrats, Tommy R!) and Sarah acknowledges the selection may have been a bit too easy. She's hoping this week's secret song snippet will be a bit tougher, but still a lot of fun! Be sure to check Facebook and Twitter for the announcement of the winner! I catch up with Bill Wadhams of Animotion, who tells me how the band came about the song “Obsession”, which was originally recorded by Michael Des Bes Barres and Holly Knight. Their version failed to chart but Animotion’s went to number six. Bill tells me why he was hesitant about the song and why he left the band before the third album. He reunited with Astrid Plane and released their first album with Animotion, Raise Your Expectations, in almost 30 years.
No series on the indelible hits of the 80s would be complete without showcasing the enduring "Obsession" by new wavers Animotion. This week we talk to co-lead singer Bill Wadhams and learn about how their biggest hit came into being and how it effected his career for good and bad. Consider this - you've just achieved world-wide fame, but on very unique terms you weren't mentally prepared for. In the process, the song becomes bigger than you and your talent and abilities get overshadowed. This bittersweet tale has a redeeming end, however, now that Animotion has released their first album featuring Bill and Astrid Plane in almost 30 years, Raise Your Expectations. Plus, it's a home run, something you may not have believed could be possible in 2017. Bill's very honest about the ups and downs of his career and what it feels like to get a second chance at the career you always dreamed of. http://animotion-obsession.com/
