PART 2 of a 2-part BEST OF compilation of Karl Pilkington's ROCKBUSTERS (a cheap knockoff of Blockbusters) from the Xfm Ricky Gervais Show with Stephen Merchant. Not only was this one of Karl's longest running features (along with Monkey News), but it was also voted by fans as his greatest XFM feature of all time. Karl Pilkington gives a cryptic clue (it's usually nonsense) and the initials of a famous band or artist (he sometimes gets the initials wrong), and listeners either call, or as the feature developed (unless they were experiencing technical difficulties), email in their answers. The winner gets an arbitrary assortment of tat, often including a pointless DVD seemingly chosen at random from the bargain bucket. This 2-part BEST OF ROCKBUSTERS Compilation is based on the comprehensive 6-part ROCKBUSTERS compilation of every Rockbuster segment from the Xfm Ricky Gervais Show (released previously). CHAPTERS: Cilla Black, Small Faces, New Order (0:00) Bryan Ferry, Del Amitri, Chris de Burgh (8:02) Tony Bennett, The Darkness, Adam Faith (17:25) Alex Parks, Aztec Camera, Phil Collins (24:45) Gareth Gates, Texas, Delta Goodrem (31:45) Nik Kershaw, Soft Cell, OutKast (36:14) The Divine Comedy, Electric Six, Erasure (42:50) Courtney Love, The Bravery, The Monkees (48:31) Donovan, Yoko Ono, McFly (56:16) Lisa Stansfield, The Buggles, Amy Winehouse (1:03:26)

Paul Haig in conversation with David Eastaugh https://linktr.ee/paulhaig Together with Orange Juice, Aztec Camera and The Go-Betweens, Josef K were one of the Postcard label's million dollar quartets, recording five smart singles and an album, The Only Fun In Town. Touring the album during July and August of 1981, however, the band split after a final show in Glasgow. The exact reasons behind the split - principally the decision of frontman Paul Haig - remain obscure, although it would seem that a combination of too-great expectations, too-small financial returns, Haig's dislike of touring, and unspecified disagreements over future direction were to blame. Fancifully, Postcard boss Alan Horne pointed the finger of blame at the NME... Whatever the truth, one of the Great White Hopes of the post-punk had self-destructed after just one long player, thus fulfilling their own brash prophecy.

This week, we dig into the debut LP by the Scottish jangle pop band Aztec Camera , 1983's High Land, Hard Rain. The creative force behind the band was Roddy Frame, a fine singer, remarkable guitarist, and very gifted songwriter, who started his career at 15, and was 18 when this album was recorded. Completed in just three weeks, the album is filled with wonderful pop songs that touch on jazz and soul, and often defy categorization. Upon its release it was a commercial success in the UK and received critical raves on both sides of the pond.High Land, Hard Rain is an inconceivably mature and complex album given the age of the songwriter. And while the album suffers some from 1980's production issues (most notably the use of synth drums), thankfully the strength of the songwriting transcends this weakness. This week FSQ show Host Chuck Da Fonk is on a road trip to Hollywood, Los Angeles, California to celebrate George Clinton of Parliament-Funkadelic (P-Funk) receiving his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Plenty of references to Hollywood in the P-Funk songs presented in this episode, plus a bunch of new music including a 3 track stunner from Philippa, a hot single by Psymon Spine, and more Balearic fun from One Half of Bent. Chuck pontificates the ramifications of taking on too much contract work while distracting himself from his full plate with classic cuts by Chris Jasper of the Isley Brothers, Aztec Camera, Angelo Bond, and one of his new wave favs, Shriekback. "Summer of No Light" The Philadelphia-raised Kip Berman had a musical life before he was the Natvral and that life could be found in his band The Pains of Being Pure At Heart. The beloved New York outfit was around for a little over a decade, calling it a day in 2019 after four perfect albums of indie pop that brought to mind everyone from Aztec Camera to Belle and Sebastian. Berman's 2021 debut as The Natural was the scorching beauty of an album called Tethers, which, for those of you keeping score, was my favorite album of the year. His sophomore album Summer Of No Light is a straight-up killer. It's got all the howl of Basement Tapes era-Dylan and the raw pop smarts of early Dream Syndicate, and it's one of those records that grabs you from the beginning, leaving you mesmerized by its raw and tender power. I love this album. It's somehow feral and polished and it's filled with the most achingly lovely hooks you'll hear all year. www.thenatvral.bandcamp.com www.bombshellradio.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.embersarts.com Twitter: @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

Dessutom ger han oss några mycket upptagna produktioner signerade The Squires of the Subterrain, Of Montreal och Bob Drake, vilket osökt leder över till den käre Esquivel. I Roberts last.fm-historik hör vi turkisk surfrock, tysk progfolk och norsk Ulver. Vidare förekommer Michael Bublé, Aztec Camera, Felt, Bruno Mars, Prefab Sprout och två exempel på fenomenet "svarslåtar", varav ett avgjort bisarrt. Och så har Love gjort ungefär 1,5 låtar. During the height of his fame with Soft Cell, Marc Almond had a side project. An outlet for the less polished pop side of his persona. Dark, passionate, intense, diverse, and riveting. And that was just the musicians that were part of the collective known as Marc and the Mambas. As we publish this podcast episode in mid-August 2023, it's precisely 40 years since Marc and the Mambas released their 2nd LP 'Torment and Toreros'. We celebrate by looking at the key personnel involved, the recording process they went through, and the songs that were released on this 90 minute long double album. You'll hear about the real life torment that emerged after the release of the record and Marc's extreme reaction to less than favourable reviews. For balance, there's comments from the fans that adore the album and what it still means to them 40 years on, Kate included. From the same week of release, we enjoy a bumper hit of nostalgia. It was a great top 10 UK singles chart to wax lyrical about, featuring 80's gold from Depeche Mode, Wham, Spandau Ballet, Elton John, Paul Young, and The Style Council. The movies on at the box office were equally impressive, including some huge blockbusters and critically acclaimed films starring the likes of Michael Caine, Jennifer Beals, Harrison Ford, Roger Moore, Christopher Reeve, Julie Walters, and Matthew Broderick. The heat makes the headlines during the summer of 1983 in the UK, along with a new registration plate format for vehicles, and Kate gets rather excited about a couple of shows that aired for the first time in the UK on ITV. Our Top 3 picks this week, are our favourite double albums of all time. Spoiler alert, all Kate's are from the same artist. I wonder who that could be!? Singles of the week: Kate goes for the modern classic from Sheffield's Reverend & The Makers - 'A letter To My 21 Year old self': https://youtu.be/8IQJTCrDI5Q Rick sticks with 1983 and the pop gem from Aztec Camera that is 'Oblivious': https://youtu.be/2B2Sc2G_5ZA For those on Facebook, here's a link to a post we published in the private 'Marc Almond' group with some great comments about the record: https://www.facebook.com/groups/4258153798?multi_permalinks=10161469921478799 Two recent podcasts featuring Anni Hogan: https://open.spotify.com/episode/5RJuwSD4NZjuxb7TOZ05fz?si=rBhS5rPxRgu11khgisWd1Q https://open.spotify.com/episode/4kh3V42TjQBp3XlyaWAeVq?si=QWb-fyltSLaAR5aZ4EVKdA Please support our indie podcast by subscribing on your listening platform of choice, sharing with your friends and family, rating us on Spotify, and/or Apple Podcasts, following, liking, or commenting on our social media channels, OR you can make Memorabilia podcast history and be the first non-family member to send us an email - a mention on a future episode is guaranteed (yes, we're still waiting on this one!!!) In our Season 3 finale, we spend another week outside of the normal O3L era to discuss our Top 5 Songs of 2022. Not only that, but we have something really special for you, as our Third Lads this week are Sarah Cogan and Dylan Frankland from Toronto dream pop band Tallies. Yes, that's right...the band behind the 2022 record Patina that Brett picked as his #1 album of the year last week. We cover a lot of the amazing songs that this year had to offer, from deep underground tracks to the tunes that had the whole world singing along, as well as a whole bunch of other totally 2022 topics: Condiments! Kool-Aid! Urban Outfitters! Gothic Horror Clowns! Politicians (isn't that kinda the same thing as gothic horror clowns??)! Climate change! Swifties! Plus, Sarah & Dylan offer insights into their new album, their writing process, and Tallies' 2022 highlights. If you are already a Tallies fan, you'll love this episode...if you're new to Tallies, be prepared to become a fan! Happy New Year! We can't wait for you to see what's in store for Season 4! About Tallies: Tallies started in earnest when singer Sarah Cogan, guitarist Dylan Frankland, and drummer Cian O'Neill began collaborating in late 2017. A proto-version of the band began at Algonquin College, when Sarah met Dylan during a music engineering course that saw the two become lab partners. All throughout their career, they've dove into the bands that would influence their sound–the Sundays, the Smiths, Aztec Camera–all while adding their own signature elements; Sarah's airy-yet-arresting vocals, Dylan's stunning gossamer guitar work, Cian's astronomic drumming. They got down to business rather quickly, as in 2019, their debut self-titled album was released on Hand Drawn Dracula in Canada and Kanine Records in the United States. Solidifying the band's stature as Canada's leading dream pop scholars, its mix of upbeat pop hooks and heady, larger-than-life production won the band critical acclaim from the indie underground to the mainstream alike. They began work straight away on a second record, which would prove to be an even more life-affirming endeavor than their debut. With their brand new sophomore album, Patina, Toronto-based indie pop band Tallies have found a way to expertly walk that razor-thin tightrope, nodding to their favorite bands of the past while transforming their sound into something tight, bright, and undeniably fresh.
This episode features a conversation with Douglas MacIntyre, historian of Scottish indie and post punk, founder of the influential Creeping Bent label, and a musician of note via his own acts Article 58 and Port Sulphur. For an underground music nerd like myself, it really was quite the thrill. And Douglas is also the author of a new book, Hungry Beat: The Scottish Independent Pop Underground Movement (1977 – 1984), which tells an oral history of an extraordinary period of music history where the labels Fast Product, from Edinburgh, and Postcard Records, from Glasgow, ignited a DIY spirit that would later be seen in better known labels like Rough Trade and Factory, as well as birthing a clutch of records - The Human League, Scars, The Mekons, Fire Engines, Josef K, Aztec Camera, The Go-Betweens and The Bluebells – that sound as incredible now as they did all those years ago. The book is out now on the ever excellent White Rabbit Books, and I do hope you enjoy a conversation that I think is both inspiring and enlightening. Join the Substack?
Aztec Camera, Magazine, The Colourfield, A Certain Ratio, Modern English, The Misssion, Classix Nouveaux, Danse Society og The Chameleons.
Part 2 of our 1983 music podcast. The full podcast including all songs chosen by musician & writer George Paterson can be heard on Spotify ( search Over Our Garden Wall). However, if you cant access Spotify - this is a copy of all the chat from the podcast. You can of course listen to George's songs on Apple Music too, just not on this Podcast ! Apologies for this, and hopefully one day we can publish in full on Apple as we do on Spotify. Part 2 of our 1983 music podcast chat with the writer and musician George Paterson. George gives us 5 more top notch tunes from the likes of Bowie, Aztec Camera & Malcolm McLaren, and of course we manage to cover a lot of ground on the chat - that includes George nailing a couple of karaoke covers, and also discussing how tight (and small) Charlie Burchill of Simple Minds is ( allegedly). McD is posted missing from most of part 2, which was a shame on the night, however has helped to keep the length of the podcast down! Really enjoyable to finally do a year from the 1980s, and George was the perfect guest. Enjoy and stay safe. BD & McD

“Stupid Like That” Before A Boy In Cords was a Boy In Cords, he was a boy in…Trousers. That's right. When I first met the Irish-born singer songwriter, he was crushing it in the indie clubs in the Bay Area with his band Trousers. What did they sound like? they were punchy, jangly land pretty much perfect—with kind of an Aztec Camera vibe. After Trousers folded, many years went by. A Boy In Cords headed back to Ireland eventually, got married and started a family. But something happened and that something is something i'll let him tell you, but before we get to the chat, I'll tell you this. The Aztec Camera vibe has matured into more of Prefab Sprout groove and the songs of A Boy in Cords are startlingly lovely pop wonders that are lush, rich and deeply textured. The songs he's got in his satchel are brilliant and they'll only yield more and more and more. And we'll all be luckier for it. Arrancamos con Everything But The Girl y su “When All's Well”, puro Indie Pop ochentero buenrollero, lo mismo ocurre con la siguiente “So Good Today” de los londinenses “The Woodentops”. This week on The Metro, Warlock Jeff Ivins brings you the following bands: Wham!, Aztec Camera, Greg Kihn, The J Geils Band, Robert Hazard, The B-52’s, Alphaville, Jane Wiedlin, Billy Ocean, Eurythmics, Suburban Lawns, Nick Heyward, Marilyn, Fischer-Z, and finishing up with some Duran Duran.
Twenty years of interviewing fabulous musicians is no mean feat and I thought it deserved some kind of celebration, or at least to be marked in history for posterity. So, I've recorded Cat o' Nine Tales; 9 special episodes of CATtales to look back on those early encounters where the recordings of the interviews no longer survive and the details only remain in written form. After introducing my guest, I'll give you a link address to read the interview and play some of their key hits for you to listen to whilst you enjoy it. Thank you to you the listeners and my fabulous guests for your support over the years, I hope you enjoy these special 9 tales... Tale 4: Roddy Frame is an absolute delight. It's rare for a performer armed only with an acoustic guitar to create a sound which could be mistaken for ten men and his charismatic stage-presence completely captivates any audience. This style of performance is a long cry from Roddy's days with Aztec Camera who came to prominence in the early eighties and it's many years since he became an acclaimed solo artist performing acoustic tracks under his own name. This tale dates back to July 31st 2003, visit CATtales.co.uk/117 for the one with Roddy Frame and sit back and enjoy these tunes. The tracks featured are: Good Morning Britain, Somewhere in my Heart, Oblivious, White Pony and all I Need Is Everything. Visit roddyframe.com for more information on Roddy and to listen to this again and to other tales, visit CATtales.co.uk.
CHINA CRISIS (S2 | LTNF LIVE) Not a lot of great music was happening for China Crisis prior to 1985. They punched out a couple of albums but were being overshadowed by the many many synthpop bands busting out of England at the time. Then their label, Virgin Records, made a suggestion. "How 'bout we bring in some out-of-town talent. Namely, Steely Dan's Walter Becker." And suddenly, this unremarkable band became... well... remarkable. China Crisis, Frazier Chorus, Naked Eyes, The Dream Academy, The Thompson Twins, The The, Aztec Camera, Kajagoogoo... this week on LTNF LIVE About China Crisis China Crisis are an English new wave and synth-pop band. They were formed in 1979 in Kirkby, near Liverpool, Merseyside with a core of vocalist/keyboardist Gary Daly and guitarist Eddie Lundon. China Crisis were part of a wave of new Liverpool acts in the late 1970s and early 1980s, led by OMD and also including Echo and the Bunnymen, The Teardrop Explodes, A Flock of Seagulls and Frankie Goes to Hollywood. Sharing an affection for Steely Dan, David Bowie, Brian Eno and Talking Heads, Gary Daly (born 5 May 1962, Kirkby, Knowsley, Merseyside) and Eddie Lundon (born 9 June 1962, Kirkby, Knowsley, Merseyside) played with various Knowsley post-punk groups. Daly then spent time tinkering with synthesizers and a drum machine. Along with Lundon, Daly began writing songs. The pair eventually asked drummer and percussionist Dave Reilly to join them, and in 1981 they released their debut single "African and White" as China Crisis on the independent record label, Inevitable. In March 1982 they recorded a four-song Peel session for the BBC. In June 1982, they backed Tom Verlaine at The Venue in London. The band were signed to Virgin Records and recorded their debut album, Difficult Shapes & Passive Rhythms, Some People Think It's Fun to Entertain, which was released in December 1982. A re-release of "African and White" reached No. 45 in the UK Singles Chart in August 1982. The follow-up single, "No More Blue Horizons", released in October 1982 had little success, but the single "Christian", made UK No. 12 in early 1983 and brought them to national prominence. By the time of this success, Reilly had left the band, but had remained with the band long enough to co-write and perform on "Christian", along with session musician Steve Levy playing oboe and saxophone. The album peaked at No. 21 in the UK Albums Chart] During this period the band toured supporting Simple Minds on their New Gold Dream tour. This podcast is in a theme: Letter writing and sending mail…We start from Episode One with Wadsworth's letter to Barnabas Collins, the two discussing that, and go right on up into what has already been released. (Be a'skeered… be very a'skeered. Or not.)Stepping through each episode to reveal what is available in letter writing, my listeners shall see where this leads, including why episode four ventured issue with Seattle's Space Needle. *wink*Episodes: 5, 6, 7, and 8 explaining all the letter writing aspects of those. Continuing on with further episodes up into #12 and why the mail is important with the cheque for The Parapsychology Foundation for Reincarnation Research…As for Episode #14, it's almost ALL about the mail…A bit more about postal sendings in #15 then #17 between Willie Loomis and the Ghost of Sarah Collins. “That evil is wicked is well understood. The wicked are punished so you must be good.” Then #18, #19, and #21, what little we have for this theme…Updates for Osheen Nevoy's fanwork and my own… Special thanks to pen friends getting me out of the madness. Thanks to humanetech.com, etc.How hate has been manufactured for the 2012 ‘Dark Shadows' movie… and: for me. And then: How to deal with that. (I express in this podcast that the guilt is “preferable” for the sake, in this situation, you'd be' responsible' rather than ‘helplessly tricked'. Which is the better choice? Having no recourse or having been a little responsible?)For pen friends and friends, in touch, who still read books and old books: Listen. Long-Term-Narrative is far more important that we might have ever considered was important. ^_^ Ending with this Aztec Camera song, “We Could Send Letters”, dedicated to my pen friends, (please purchase it if you enjoy it.)
With all our systems – economic, political, healthcare, and more – crashing all around us, how do we even begin to imagine change? Where is the change? How do we think about it; talk about it; take part in it? Is there such a thing as systems change anymore? Or are we kidding ourselves with abstract formulas that cannot possibly keep up with the changes happening all around us? Right now, everyone is trying to figure out how to live in a worldwide pandemic. We have been in pandemics before, but never in such a radically interconnected world—with high-speed air travel and even faster electronic communication, rampant environmental pollution, nuclear weapons, and emerging autocracies, among other complicating factors. What have we learned? Do we know how to deal with uncertainty in a productive way? Or are we on a downward spiral due to humankind's inability to create balance among other humans and the more-than-human world? We all want to rebuild a more coherent and beautiful world. But we cannot move too fast. We must first learn to dance with trickster energies. It may be preemptive to propose replacement forms of order in the midst of such chaos – instead, we might need to learn a new language, a new mode of being in the world that is more creative and flexible. What stance and mindset will help us adapt to the rapid and radical changes of the present? With our systems unraveling, this is our opportunity to go beyond symptoms to root causes that unite seemingly different events. What are the openings that Trickster is making known to us? What are the resources, stories, lessons, opportunities, and wisdom we can draw from uncertain times? Join us as we delve into Dancing with Uncertainty.
