What if the biggest predictor of your child becoming a lifelong reader has nothing to do with phonics programs, library incentives, or natural talent and everything to do with protecting space in their day? Cognitive psychologist Dr. Daniel Willingham joins Ginny to reveal the surprising truth about how kids learn, why background knowledge matters more than ever, and why reading aloud long past early childhood gives kids an academic and emotional advantage. With warmth and clarity, Dr. Willingham explains the “fourth grade slump,” the power of expertise, and how AI is reshaping the skills our kids will need most in the future. This episode offers a hopeful and doable path for families who want to reclaim reading in a screen-saturated world. You'll learn why limiting screens is the single most effective way to help kids choose reading for pleasure. Dr. Willingham shares why children don't need perfection, programs, or pressure; they need a home where learning is valued, distractions are dialed down, and reading is woven into the family rhythm. Encouraging, practical, and deeply grounding, this conversation shows that every parent can raise a reader starting today. Have fun. Start now. In this episode, Mike breaks down one of the most important skills for any painting business owner who wants to grow: taking bigger swings in business. Most painting contractors stay stuck because they're afraid to invest, afraid to hire, or afraid to make decisions that could move their painting company forward. Mike explains why playing small is one of the biggest reasons painting businesses fail to scale past 300K, 500K, or even 1M per year. You'll learn why comfort destroys growth, how fear limits your ability to get painting leads, and why you can't build a profitable painting business by staying in maintenance mode. Mike shares the real mindset shift that helped transform Painter Growth, including how to make better business decisions, how to think like a CEO instead of a painter, and how to confidently invest in marketing, hiring, and systems that create long-term success. If you want to scale a painting business, get more painting leads, improve your systems, hire great painters, or take your painting company to the next level, this episode will help you break out of survival mode and finally start making moves that lead to real growth.

The holidays are meant to be a season of joy, generosity, and gratitude. Yet for many families, the celebrations come with a heavy dose of financial stress—stress that lingers long after the decorations are packed away. Our desire to bless others often leads to spending more than we planned. But it doesn't have to be that way.Recently, we sat down with Neile Simon, Certified Credit Counselor and Director of Strategic Partnerships at Christian Credit Counselors, to talk about how families can give meaningfully, stay within their means, and refocus on what Christmas is truly about.Creating a Realistic Holiday PlanMost people enter the holiday season with the best of intentions. We want to show love, bless others, and create special memories. But somewhere along the way, those intentions can derail.Neile explains that a mix of cultural pressures makes overspending almost effortless: holiday sales, credit card offers at checkout, “buy now, pay later” deals, and social media's endless highlight reels. Before long, the drive to be generous morphs into the belief that we must spend more to prove how much we care. And the consequences last far beyond December—financial stress, increased debt, and a January filled with regret rather than joy. The good news: overspending isn't inevitable. Neile suggests starting early and planning intentionally.1. Decide what you can truly afford. Account for all holiday expenses—gifts, food, travel, entertainment, and even small traditions that add up.2. Set a total spending limit. Let this number guide every decision throughout the season.3. Use cash or debit when possible. “When the money's gone, you're done—and that's okay,” Neile says. This simple boundary protects you from impulse spending.4. If using credit cards, treat them as tools—not the enemy. Used wisely, they can help you track your spending. The key is to stay disciplined and avoid taking on debt you can't comfortably repay.Ultimately, a budget is not a restriction—it's a path to freedom. It helps you enjoy the season without dreading the bill that arrives in January.Meaningful Giving Without OverspendingGenerosity isn't measured by price tags. In fact, the most meaningful gifts are often the simplest.Neile encourages families to focus on personal, relational giving:Handwritten notesHomemade treatsShared experiencesThoughtful, small gifts with clear intentionHer own family keeps gift-giving fun by setting spending limits and doing a white-elephant exchange. “It takes the pressure off,” she says, “and turns gift-giving into shared laughter and memory-making.”When togetherness becomes the priority over possessions, Christmas becomes both more joyful and more affordable. If You're Already in Debt, There's HopeFor families already carrying debt, Christmas can feel like a tug-of-war between generosity and financial reality. Neile offers this encouragement: give within your means—even if it means scaling back. Why? Because responsible giving protects your finances, your peace, and your future.“Think of it this way,” Neile says. “A relaxed, stress-free January is far better than stressing out after overspending in December.”Scaling back isn't failure—it's stewardship. And it models wisdom and faithfulness for your children.Refocusing on the True Meaning of ChristmasAmid the lights, the gifts, and the traditions, it's easy to lose sight of the heart of Christmas.“Christmas is a celebration of Jesus—the greatest gift ever given,” Neile reminds us. When our hearts are centered on Him, love and grace become the focus. Giving within our means allows us to celebrate joyfully, gratefully, and peacefully. And when we spend with purpose—anchored in Christ rather than consumerism—we experience a kind of joy that lasts long after the season ends.Need Help With Debt?If financial stress is weighing you down, Christian Credit Counselors can help. As a nonprofit ministry, they specialize in debt management—not debt consolidation—working directly with your creditors to lower interest rates and help clear the path toward freedom.Learn more at: ChristianCreditCounselors.org/Faith. On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:I'm an 84-year-old retired veteran, and my wife is 81. We have a $375,000 mortgage on a $3.2–$3.4 million home, a $140,000 portfolio, a 529 with $55,000, about $100,000 in gold jewelry, $40,000 in Social Security benefits, and $15,000 in credit card debt. We're running out of money and need to tap our home equity. The VA offered a $400,000 loan, but would a HELOC or a reverse mortgage be better? Who can help us make the right decision? We're receiving a $60,000 inheritance and have $10,000 in credit card debt. Should we use some of the inheritance to pay it off, and what should we do with the rest? My husband is disabled, and we're in our 60s—so is investing any of it in the stock market wise? And should we tithe on the inheritance?I'm 65, still working full-time as a caregiver, and have about $900,000 in my 401(k). When should I start Social Security—now or when I retire in May 2026?

In this solo episode, Darin explores a radical idea backed by ancient wisdom and modern neuroscience: that awe — a single embodied moment of wonder — may be the fastest biological doorway to expanding consciousness. Drawing on cutting-edge research, timeless spiritual traditions, and personal stories, Darin reveals how awe reduces inflammation, rewires the brain, quiets the ego, boosts vagal tone, expands time perception, and reconnects us to meaning in a world drowning in distraction. Christian Frierson's duck hunting journey started with 8-hour weekend hauls from northwest Louisiana to the legendary Dave Donaldson Black River WMA in northeast Arkansas. Those road-warrior trips forged an obsession that eventually carried him into the Red River bottoms of southwest Arkansas, where his family acquired a piece of ground with raw potential. What followed was a decade-long evolution from wide-eyed public-land hunter to a meticulous habitat manager and committed steward of the resource. That same drive pushed Frierson to build the Designated Puller, an automatic jerk-rig system born from long days in the timber and a tinkerer's mind.In this episode, Frierson opens up about the early adventures that shaped him, the transformation of his family's property, and the pressure-management strategies he uses to consistently hold ducks from opening day through the final buzzer.>>>>Thanks to our sponsors: Tom Beckbe, Lile Real Estate, Perfect Limit Outdoors, Purina Pro Plan, Sitka Gear, Greenhead: The Arkansas Duck Hunting Magazine, Diamond M Land Development, and Ducks Unlimited.Send us a textAll Rights Reserved. Erstausstrahlung: 27.11.2025

By the time these companies finally go public, most of the growth is already “cooked in.” That leaves people investing through retirement accounts buying stock at a premium while much of the upside has already been captured. In this episode of Superpowers for Good, guest Craig Stephens, founder of Anatoc Media, shares how he helps everyday investors understand and, where possible, tap into this elusive pre‑IPO and IPO economy through AccessIPOs.com and his Retire Before Dad blog.Craig explains the core problem bluntly: “From 1996 to this year we went from about 8,000 public companies to just 4,000.” That shrinking universe means the broad market funds many people depend on for retirement are drawing from fewer companies, while an expanding slice of innovation remains locked up in private markets. He points to the rise of giant private companies as a turning point. “These companies really started with Uber. Uber waited a long time to go public and by the time it went public most of its growth was already built into the company.” When firms can command higher valuations and easy capital while staying private, they have little incentive to list, especially when secondary markets and tender offers already provide liquidity for insiders and employees. The result is a widening access gap. “With fewer companies going public that wealth is getting sort of sectioned off in this venture capital world which is just not accessible to everybody,” Craig notes. Regulated crowdfunding and other exemptions appear as part of the solution, opening a window for retail investors to participate earlier, even if only on a small scale compared to institutional players.Craig distinguishes between his two platforms. Retire Before Dad focuses on what he calls the “boring stuff” — index funds, sound retirement planning, smart personal finance habits. Access IPOs is intentionally more speculative, a place for investors to allocate a small slice of their wealth to higher‑risk, higher‑potential pre‑IPO and IPO opportunities. The discussion underscores a growing conviction among advocates for retail investors: the financial system needs more pathways for ordinary people to participate in the wealth generated by innovation. While regulation crowdfunding alone cannot fix the system, it is an essential part of a broader effort to ensure that elites are not the only ones who benefit from the most dynamic companies of this era.tl;dr:The episode explores how shrinking public markets prevent many ordinary investors from sharing in innovation‑driven wealth.Craig explains why companies stay private longer, shifting most gains to venture capital and other private‑market players. The conversation highlights how regulation crowdfunding and Reg A create limited but meaningful early‑stage access for the crowd.Craig shares his path from IT consulting to launching Retire Before Dad and Access IPOs to educate DIY investors.Craig presents his superpower of empowering investors, illustrated through his IPO community and practical guidance for smarter participation. How to Develop Empowering Investors As a SuperpowerCraig's superpower is empowering investors to take control of their own money. His work is about “empowering ordinary investors to take control of their money whether they are young or old.” Through his two platforms, he supports younger people “interested in these hot companies that are going public or that are private” and retirees he “empower[s] to manage their own money as DIY planners and investors.” Craig challenges the aura of complexity built by the financial industry, insisting “investing doesn't need to be that difficult or complex and ordinary investors can do it on their own,” accessing both traditional assets and, where appropriate, “the other economy that a lot of people don't have access to.”Craig described a small investing community that began on Facebook and later moved to Patreon. He does not give formal advice but offers tools, education, and a trusted space to discuss IPO and pre‑IPO opportunities. Within that group, members identified and accessed the Circle IPO. “At some point it was up six or seven hundred percent and that's very unusual,” Craig explains. Because the community had developed knowledge and shared strategies together, ordinary investors were ready to participate through available brokerage channels. Craig emphasizes there are also deals that “didn't jump out of the gate,” highlighting both the potential and the real risks of this approach.Tips for Developing This Superpower (Actionable)Demystify investingLearn basic concepts in public markets, IPOs, and private offerings to see that they are understandable and navigable.Adopt a DIY approachTake responsibility for core decisions about saving, allocation, and risk instead of defaulting everything to professionals.Anchor most money in simple vehiclesUse broad index funds and long‑term retirement accounts as the foundation of a personal investing strategy.Limit speculative capitalTreat IPOs and pre‑IPO deals as a small, clearly defined portion of an overall portfolio.Build or join trusted communitiesEngage with smaller, higher‑trust groups rather than anonymous online forums crowded with bots and hidden agendas.Increase access thoughtfullyWhen appropriate, open accounts at reputable brokers or platforms that offer IPO, pre‑IPO, or crowdfunding access.Stay clear‑eyed about riskRemember that “IPO investing carries significant risk” and expect that not every deal will be a winner.Prioritize habits over hypePair occasional high‑upside opportunities with disciplined saving, consistent investing, and long‑term planning.By following Craig's example and advice, empowering investors can become a skill. With practice and effort, it can become a superpower that enables more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. Ever walked into a new OR and spent the first ten minutes hunting for an airway bougie or a computer log-in that actually works? We dig into the hidden safety risks of a transient anesthesia workforce and share practical, fast-moving fixes that keep patients safe while keeping rooms open. With staffing shortages reshaping coverage models across the United States and beyond, locum clinicians are essential—but inconsistent environments, unclear escalation paths, and fragmented communication can turn small friction points into big hazards. We unpack what the current evidence says—and doesn't—about locum-related outcomes. A UK qualitative study surfaces predictable threats like unfamiliar systems and weak team integration, while primary care data shows prescribing differences without higher adverse events. In anesthesia, large safety studies are scarce, so leaders must rely on smart design: targeted orientation, standardized room setups, and shared mental models that don't depend on who's on the schedule. We also talk dollars and sense, highlighting a simulation-based break-even estimate for when full-time hiring outperforms locum coverage, and how to weigh cost without compromising safety. From the main OR to higher-risk non-operating room anesthesia sites, we outline concrete steps that work across settings. Limit initial deployment to oriented locations, add locum staff to all communication channels from day one, and use checklists, cognitive aids, and universal timeouts to reduce variability. Establish clear role definitions and escalation trees posted in every anesthetizing location, and fold temporary clinicians into audits, feedback loops, and ongoing education. The aim is simple: compress the ramp-up, eliminate guesswork, and make the safe action the easy action—even when teams change daily. If you care about perioperative safety, access, and team resilience, this conversation gives you a playbook to act now. Subscribe, share with a colleague who onboards locums, and email your best orientation tip so we can feature it on a future show. For show notes & transcript, visit our episode page at apsf.org: https://www.apsf.org/podcast/282-building-safer-anesthesia-teams-in-a-locum-driven-world/© 2025, The Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation

In this episode, Bob ‘n Joyce explore how the words we think and speak shape the world we live in. Our language can either unlock new possibilities or quietly reinforce the status quo. And in a world that's often dripping with negativity, it's easy to get swept up and mirror the tone around us. The same dynamic plays out inside organizations: the prevailing language can propel a culture forward… or keep it stuck. Key Takeaways: • Choosing our words consciously — what we call activating language — can bring new possibilities into being that wouldn't emerge on their own. • The words we use about ourselves influence how we show up and how others experience us. • Most of us toss out language without realizing its impact. • The dominant language inside an organization is a direct signal of the health of its culture. Join us as we unpack how language shapes personal and organizational wellbeing. Come on in. Grab a snack. Welcome!

Today's guest is Austin Jochum. Austin Jochum is the founder of Jochum Strength, a former All-Conference safety turned performance coach known for playful, movement-rich training. He blends strength, speed, and adaptability to help athletes build real-world capability and enjoy the process. So often, coaches inadvertently play by the formal “rules” of coaching, through substantial instruction, within smaller boxes of training. Gameplay and sport itself are the ultimate example of task-based stimulation, chaos, and problem-solving, and the more we learn from it, the more effective our training can become. In this episode, Austin Jochum and I explore how coaching transforms when you trade rigid cues for play, stimulus, and athlete-driven learning. We dig into why intent and novelty matter, how to “win the day” without chasing constant PRs, and the power of environments that let athletes self-organize. Austin speaks on his recent dive into improving his Olympic lifting, and subsequent improvement in explosive athletic power, along with the masculine and feminine nature of the snatch and clean and jerk, respectively. Finally, Austin also breaks down the JST Olympics—his team-based approach that's exploding motivation, competition, and performance in the gym. Add low-level grappling or tagging games to build instinctive reaction. Favor tasks where athletes solve problems on their own rather than through constant cueing. Let athletes “feel” leverage, pressure, and timing instead of explaining it. 14:30 – Build constraints that shape behavior instead of commanding technique Austin's “maze” concept uses environment and rules to funnel athletes into better movement patterns. Use boundaries, footwork boxes, or timing rules to nudge athletes into desired solutions. Ask “what would make the athlete naturally move better?” instead of “how do I cue it?” Encourage unpredictable tasks that force athletes to explore and adapt. 22:40 – Exploration outperforms instruction for long-term development Austin finds that athletes learn faster when they discover solutions. Give them space to experiment before layering instruction. Adjust one variable at a time and let athletes reorganize around it. Use questions (“What did you feel? What would you try next?”) to guide reflection. 31:18 – Games expand movement bandwidth Austin uses play-based drills to build coordination, elasticity, and adaptability. Rotate games: tag, dodgeball variations, reactive pursuit, to challenge perception-action loops. Use small-sided tasks to increase decision density without overthinking. Keep the focus on fun: fun increases intent and frees up movement quality. 38:01 – Use wrestling-inspired drills for strength without rigidity Wrestling movements gave Austin strong connective tissue without bulky lifting. Use partner-resistance tasks for whole-body strength and tension awareness. Build isometrics out of wrestling positions for joint integrity. Allow controlled chaos; body contact builds stabilizing capacity. 45:10 – Heavy rope work for rhythm, sequencing, and tissue tolerance Austin relies on heavy rope patterns for global coordination. Use ropes to sync hands, feet, hips, and breath. Program flowing, continuous patterns to teach timing and smooth force transfer. Start with simple rhythms, then build patterns that cross midline. 52:46 – Culture and community determine training success Austin emphasizes hiring people who share curiosity and a growth mindset. Build environments where coaches model exploration, not perfection. Encourage shared training, shared learning, and open dialogue. Make the gym a place where athletes feel safe to try new things. 1:01:37 – Encourage imitation and athlete-led learning Austin sees imitation as a primary learning driver. Let athletes watch each other and imitate good movers. Create partner structures where athletes observe and mirror. Limit over-coaching so imitation can self-organize movement. 1:10:55 – Use recovery tools to teach regulation, not toughness Cold exposure and breathing work are about awareness and control. Focus on downregulation, not chasing extreme discomfort. Teach athletes how to relax under stress through controlled exposures. Keep recovery practices consistent and simple. 1:18:42 – Breathing for awareness and movement refinement Austin uses breath as a sensory anchor for better movement feel. Teach nasal breathing during warmups to increase internal awareness. Pair breath with movement tasks to improve timing and relaxation. Explore slow breathing to reduce unnecessary tension. 1:24:52 – Rhythm and tempo drive better movement than force Austin believes rhythm is the “glue” of athleticism. Use music, metronomes, or rhythmic cues to build flow. Train movements at different tempos to expand adaptability. Emphasize smoothness over force output when teaching skills. 1:30:48 – Stay curious and evolve your practice Austin's philosophy centers around lifelong learning. Revisit old drills with new perspectives. Explore different disciplines (dance, wrestling, martial arts). Let your own training experiment inform your coaching. Quotes from Austin Jochum “Wrestling taught me to solve problems in real time. You can't fake instinct in that environment.” “When you build the right constraint, you don't have to coach as much. The environment does the teaching.” “Exploration gives athletes ownership. They learn the lesson at a deeper level.” “Games create bandwidth. The more options you give the athlete, the more adaptable they become.” “Wrestling positions gave me strength that the weight room couldn't.” “Ropes taught me rhythm and timing. They connect the whole body.” “Culture is the system. If the environment is right, the training takes care of itself.” “I want athletes to imitate great movement, not memorize cues.” “Cold exposure isn't toughness. It's learning how to regulate yourself under stress.” “Breathing is awareness. It gives you access to better movement.” “Rhythm is the missing piece in performance. Smooth beats strong.” “The more curious I am, the better my athletes get.” About Austin Jochum Austin Jochum is the founder of Jochum Strength, a performance coach known for blending old-school grit with modern movement science. A former University of St. Thomas football player and All-Conference safety, Austin built his philosophy around “training the human first,” emphasizing play, adaptability, and athletic expression over rigid templates. His coaching blends strength, speed, breathwork, and movement variability, creating athletes who are not just powerful—but resilient and skillful in chaotic environments. Through his in-person gym in Minnesota, online programs, and the Jochum Strength Podcast, Austin has become a leading voice in community-driven athletic development, helping athletes and everyday movers reconnect with their bodies, build real-world ability, and enjoy the process.
