Andy is a songwriter and musician who was the lead singer for Wall of Voodoo after Stan Ridgway left the band in 1984. Andy went on to do a few solo records, create a well-known cult musical called White Trash Wins Lotto, and wrote one of my favorite songs of the 90s,”Tomorrow, Wendy” – which was famously recorded by Concrete Blonde on their 1990 record Bloodletting. Today, Andy tells us a pretty incredible story about a mystery song he became obsessed with back in the day. I think the less I tell you about it, the better! We're talking to music journalist and author Annie Zaleski, who has contributed to The Guardian, NPR Music, Rolling Stone, and many others. She's written best selling books on Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, and my personal favorite – her 33 1/3 book on Duran Duran's "Rio." Her newest book is titled “I Got You Babe: A Celebration of Cher,” which will be in bookstores on May 6, 2025. The band is most well known for their 1986 hit “The Future's So Bright I Gotta Wear Shades,” but they were far more prolific than just that one song. They released six albums in the decade between 1986 and 1995 and Tom went on to record numerous other albums and collaborated with artists as varied as Cher, Jackson Browne, and Stewart Copeland of the Police. Back in the 90s, he was in a band you might have heard of called The Squirrel Nut Zippers – he's the songwriter behind their big hit song “Hell” and also one of my personal favorites of theirs, “Put A Lid On it.” Beyond that, he's a great storyteller who's done a lot of freelance writing work. He also wrote a highly acclaimed book, “A Really Strange and Wonderful Time: The Chapel Hill Music Scene,” which was released last year, and as over the years created new music under the moniker of Tom Maxwell and the Minor Drag. They burst onto the scene at the dawn of MTV with their video for “AEIOU Sometimes Y” – a song the mixed the elements of everything that was happening at the time. New wave, rap, the new anything goes mentality of the early 80s. The song even made it's way onto Rolling Stone's recent list of the best songs of 1983! Ebn-Ozn disbanded in the mid-80s and Ozn went on to find success as Dada Nada with a string of house music hits in the 90s and into the 2000s. But, it was a recent return to his 80s roots that proved a recent pivotal moment for him. Be sure to look out for my books, "Lived Through That" and "80s Redux" where ever you buy your books! She fronted two amazing bands from 90s Seattle – Hammerbox and Goodness – that were legendary if you were in the know. They were always on the precipice of something big but they never quite got to Pearl Jam status. One of the main reasons why the band is beloved is because of Carrie's remarkable voice and stage presence. Really, both bands should have been way bigger and it's worth digging out their records – they're out there on the streaming service of your choice! They were all over the radio at the time with hits like “Linger” “Zombie” and “Dreams.” They're probably the second biggest band from Ireland, after U2. After the devasting loss of singer Dolores O'Riordan in 2018, Fergal had to find the confidence to venture into a new way to express himself – moving into composing for film. It's Pearl Harbour. In 1980, she had a minor hit with the song “Driving” with her band Pearl Harbour and the Explosions. After the band broke up, she got involved with the Clash's bassist Paul Simonon and moved to London, becoming quickly enamored with a more rock and roll sound. She recorded the rockabilly album “Don't Follow Me, I'm Lost Too,” which got lost in the world of record company politics but found a new life this year with the re-issue on Liberation Hall Records. Devo were one of the foundations of the post-punk/new wave era with songs like "Uncontrollable Urge," “Girl U Want,” “Beautiful World,” and their biggest hit and early MTV staple, 1980's “Whip It.” The formation of the band, however, was born from the tragic events of the shootings of four students at Kent State University by the Ohio National Guard in 1970, which Gerald witnessed first hand. Here, he tells us about that day and how that led to the formation of one of the biggest bands of the 80s. Over 100,000 people were there to protest the rising number of racial attacks that were occurring in the United Kingdom -as well as to see bands like The Clash, Steel Pulse, and X-Ray Spex. Barry started off his musical journey as the keyboardist in XTC. He played on their first two records before leaving to start Shriekback with Dave Allen, former bass player for the Gang of Four. Shreikback's best known song might be “My Spine is the Bassline,” but it's their 1985 song “Nemesis” that I feel is a totally underrated track of the 80s and well worth searching out. There's even a legend that Jane coined the phrase “Britpop.” Her first book, Lunch With The Wild Frontiers: A History Of Britpop And Excess in 13 and a 1/2 Chapters, was a fantastic read. Her second book, Here They Come With Their Make Up On: Suede, Coming Up And More Adventures Beyond The Wild Frontiers, was released in 2022 and her third book on Pulp's “This is Hardcore” will be released March 7th. “Lived Through That” is the companion podcast to my book where I look at influential musicians of the 80s and 90s and where they are today. On this podcast, we'll delve deeper into a single pivotal moment in the lives of some of the artists I feature in that book, as well as other artists I love and admire. The stories they tell are open, honest, and inspiring. This week, we're excited to talk with Einar Orn – straight from Reyjavik, Iceland. He is sometimes called Iceland's first punk and started several punk groups, including Purrkur Pillnikk, before eventually forming the Sugarcubes in 1986 with Einar sharing vocals with Bjork. Today, he tells me how he got turned on to punk music in the first place and how that kick started his musical journey. Einar's web site is here, where you can see (and buy!) some of his art and see upcoming exhibtions and gigs. We're back witha new season and we're kicking off with a story from the legendary Gary Numan. He's a pioneer in electronic music producing such early hits as “Are Friends Electric?” and “Cars” and is an inspiration to artists as varied as Nine Inch Nails, Damon Albarn from Blur, and the Foo Fighters. After a series of shows at Wembly in 1981, Numan decided to “retire” for a spell. Music got in the way of Numan's other love, flying planes and, in 1982 he decided to take his plane and circumnavigate the globe. Today, Gary tells us about the highs and lows of that experience. It's quite a tale so buckle your seat belts and strap in for the ride! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

She's been one of my absolute favorite artists since I first heard the Blake Babies' “Earwig” back in the early 90s. Since then, she's consistently put out great albums and been extremely prolific – releasing almost 20 albums in addition to collaborations with Paul Westerberg, Matthews Caws, Evan Dando, and others. Her most recent, out November 17th, is “Juliana Hatfield Sings ELO,” a continuation of her series of tribute albums that have featured Olivia Newton-John and The Police. Today, Juliana talks about her career and how the politics of the music business led her to almost quit entirely and how that journey led her to go back to school to try and get an MFA in fine art.
