Here is Part Two of our interview with Brett Bigham, Oregon's 2014 Teacher of the Year, and Oregon's first openly gay Teacher of the Year. If you haven't listened to Part 1 (Episode 26), you should do so-you don't want to miss any of this interview. Brett is a fantastic Special Education educator, who was treated incredibly unfairly by his former district. Listen to the conclusion of his story, which will make you feel angry, shocked-and most importantly, hopeful. Which all of us could use right around now. Thanks to Max Siskind, for voicing our intro! Please subscribe, rate, and review the podcast, and spread the word to your fellow educators (or anyone else)! And feel free to reach out with ideas, suggestions, and of course...words of affirmation! Email: WTBOTTCast@gmail.com FB: Will This Be On The Test? We were honored to have Brett Bigham, 2014 Oregon Teacher of the Year, as our guest. Not only has he done amazing things for special education students that led to his well deserved award, but he's also had to deal with his former district's complete impingement upon his rights, because he is openly gay. This is Part 1 of this two part interview. Welcome, and thank you, to Max Siskind, for doing our new intro! Brett Bigham became the first special education teacher to be named Oregon Teacher of the Year in 2014. He later lost his job after speaking publicly about being a gay man and filing a complaint about the discrimination he experienced. We hear Bigham's reflections on the recent apology he got from the school district that fired him and the U.S. Supreme Court decision that protects LGBTQ people in the workplace.
This week on I Wish I Knew EDU I’m talking to Brett Bigham @2014ORTOY about #GlobalSPED, making small adjustments to allow for greater inclusion, Ability Guidebooks, being a champion for Equity, #SpeED and how sometimes our lives are not what we planned.
