Get ready to crank up the good vibes on All The Waves! This month, we're talking to two local legends who know how to get a crowd moving. First up: Ricky Windhorst, aka “Big Easy Rick.” A Louisiana Music Hall of Famer (thanks to his days with the J.J. Muggler Band) and the frontman of festival favorite Four Unplugged, Ricky's been rocking the Northshore with high-energy classic rock and funk for years. He recently dropped his first solo album, Lucky Dog — seven original songs packed with that unmistakable New Orleans flavor. Ricky shares why the St. Tammany music scene hits different and his favorite spots to catch a live show. Then, meet Fadra White, one half of the powerhouse sister duo leading Soul Revival. With 20+ years of high-energy performances across Southeast Louisiana, Soul Revival's fanbase — their loyal "Soulmates" — and a 2024 Musical Artist of the Year award prove they know how to throw a serious party. Fadra (yes, sister to co-host Zondra!) talks about their musical roots, a career that once took them to Carnegie Hall, and the real story behind their most unforgettable moment onstage. Their motto? “We turn their party into our party.”

He and I sat down to discuss a strange new sub-genre of Biopic: Musical Artists with the surname Williams who are portrayed as a nonhuman. Hey folks, thanks for tuning in to the first episode of the Ecosystem Member podcast for 2025 with the incredible award-winning musician, producer and activist Madame Gandhi. Madame Gandhi is the stage name of Kiran Gandhi who uses her music and voice to support personal expression, female empowerment and most recently - nature. She began producing music in 2015 after her story of free-bleeding while running the London Marathon went viral. Since then, she's been named a TED Fellow and to Forbes 30 Under 30 list for music and the BBC 100 Women list. And in 2023 she was awarded the Songwriter's Hall of Fame Abe Olman award for excellence in songwriting and leadership. As we discuss in the episode, after connecting with nature more deeply during the COVID-19 lockdown when it was seen as a safe space for activity, Kiran pursued a Masters in Music, Science and Technology from Stanford. In this program, she learned how to build a hydrophone and had the opportunity to travel to Antarctica where she recorded the sound of glaciers melting that make up her song ‘In Purpose'. That song - ‘In Purpose' is unique in that it is made completely of recordings Kiran captured in nature - which is credited on the track - and is part of EarthPercent's Sounds Right initiative with a portion of streaming royalties going to conversation efforts and projects to mitigate the effects of climate change. I think you'll be able to tell from the episode that I was pretty excited to get to chat with Kiran and as excited for you to get to listen to this conversation we recorded about a month ago. We talk about her background growing up in metropolitan cities around the world, how the pandemic shifted her relationship with nature and how she actually goes about capturing and creating music from nature sounds. She has an amazing aim to combine her already empowering lyrics with music that is 100% sourced from nature, while considering how she can be a positive addition to the soundscape. Kiran's work is a great example of how our relationship with nature can become a source of artistic and creative expression. 1. Where are you from? How was your upbringing? My family escaped the Khmer Rouge regime and found a safe spot where I was born, in a refugee camp in Thailand, and then we moved to America in 1989 when I was still a baby.My upbringing started rough. My parents raised my sister and I in the Tenderloin. It's compared to Skid Row and it doesn't have the greatest reputation, but it raised me to become a wiser than normal person. Since Asian gang violence was big in the 90's, I went outside the Tenderloin and found myself making friends with everyone else, staying away from Asian gangs. If it wasn't for music, I think I would be gang banging, selling drugs, or doing god knows what. It doesn't mean I wasn't mixed in the dirt but it wasn't easy growing up there. My parents are still there, waiting for me to get them out one day. I will. What really saved my life growing up was music, sports, and being forced to volunteer at church. My sister and I grew up listening to Tupac, Timbaland, Naughty By Nature, The Fugees, Boyz II Men, Lauryn Hill, and so many more Hip-Hop and R&B artists that helped with us cope with the outside world. I looked for artists that I was able to connect with. 2. How did you begin making music?I tried making music several times growing up since my church had a band but it never really came to fruition. When I was 14, my friend, DJ Frisko Eddy and I started a DJ group called “The Untouchablez” with 2 other people at Horizon Youth Center in the Mission District. That's when I learned how to scratch and mix, but I stopped because I needed to get a “real job.” Things were always getting in the way, but I found creative ways to keep myself in the music scene like promoting for clubs, connecting talent, and managing local artists.I never really started making music until just recently last year, when my long-term girlfriend and I broke up. It was the worst breakup that I ever had because of what I gave up to be in that relationship. But…it brought me back to music. Maybe, music is my first love but I never paid that much attention to it before. It's like a memory that I'm feeling again, a familiar nostalgic feeling of love. 3. How did you get your rap name?I don't think it's a rap name. I chose Crossed The Golden Gate because my family flew over and crossed the Golden Gate Bridge when we immigrated to America. I don't think I rap like that. 4. How would you describe your musical style?I don't know yet. All I know is that I wrote poetry and spoken word my entire life, and it comes out like that in my songs.5. Tell me about “Own Nothing”.My parents and I had never owned anything in our lives. I watched my parents help other families get what they wanted by helping them with their bills and mortgage, but I had never seen my parents help themselves.I'm sitting on major debt and student loans right now and it's only because I never had support. My parents couldn't support me and my sister had to help me out a bit, but she was also struggling. My parents sacrificed so much for us and their relatives that it became normal for them. So, it's a deeper meaning to “Own Nothing” than people think. Owning anything on Earth is not appealing for me anymore since we really never owned anything. I die without it anyway, so why even care? 6. What inspired you to create Own Nothing? The struggle of my parents and my upbringing that I couldn't tell anyone about. 7. How is it different than previous drops? My first drop was a fun dance song, so this is really my first project that I dropped. 8. Is it part of a project? If so, can you tell me more about that?I am the project. 9. What message do you want fans to walk away with after listening to “Own Nothing”?Be a friend.I want people to know that people aren't what they seem and everyone is struggling. You just don't know what they are struggling with. Stay curious but don't judge a human just because you had issues with your projections. Just ask them how they're doing. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/yourbestlifestyles/support

In the latest episode of our podcast, "Harmony In Chaos," we had the pleasure of interviewing Belle Vex, a digital chart-topping artist with a remarkable story. Belle Vex's journey from a life-altering car accident to becoming a celebrated musician is both inspiring and compelling. Let's dive into the highlights of our conversation and discover what makes Belle Vex's story unique. A Journey Marked by Adversity Belle Vex, born and raised in New Bedford, MA, faced a life-changing event when a severe car accident nearly took his life. This incident forced him to reevaluate his path, ultimately leading him to embrace his true calling: music. Reflecting on this pivotal moment, Belle shared, "It was during this time of introspection that I realized music was my true passion. It became my way of expressing everything I couldn't say out loud." From Classical Beginnings to Modern Pop Interestingly, Belle Vex's musical journey began with classical training. "I was forced into music like a childhood prodigy," he recalled. "I took private lessons on the cello, but it wasn't what I wanted to do. By high school, I was done with it." His early experiences with music were a stark contrast to his current style, which is unapologetically honest and resonates deeply with his audience. The Struggle and the Rise Belle's path was far from smooth. After his accident, he faced another setback with a second accident, which left him bedridden and battling depression. "It was a dark time," he admitted. "But it was also when I started writing lyrics. Music became my outlet, my way of dealing with everything." He began to write and record his experiences, leading to the creation of his first musical project as Belle Vex. This period marked the beginning of his ascent in the music industry. "Every day for 12 days, I wrote a song. That was my way of saying, 'I'm still here.'" The Road to Recognition Despite numerous challenges, Belle Vex's determination never wavered. He shared stories of being cheated and taken advantage of by people in the industry, but these experiences only made him more resilient. "I think someone looking from the outside would call it savvy. For me, it's about knowing when to say no." Belle's hard work paid off when his single "Blacked Out" gained significant attention. "When I released 'Blacked Out' in 2013, A&R reps started calling me. It was a breakthrough moment," he said. A Message of Hope and Authenticity Throughout our conversation, Belle emphasized the importance of authenticity. He recounted a valuable lesson learned from a failed audition for a Dunkin' Donuts commercial. "They liked me for being myself, but I tried to be what I thought they wanted. It taught me to always stay true to who I am." Belle Vex's music carries a message of hope and resilience. "Even in the darkest times, there's always hope," he said. "I make music to be a voice in the noise, to tell people to seize the moment and be themselves." Looking Ahead As Belle Vex prepares to release new music in the fall of 2024, he remains committed to his craft and his message. "I do this because I believe someone out there needs it. If my music helps even one person, then it's all worth it." Belle Vex's story is a testament to the power of perseverance and the transformative power of music. From overcoming personal tragedies to finding his voice as an artist, Belle's journey is truly inspiring. Bekx hails from the Heart of the South-Atlanta, Georgia. A city teeming with talent and a remarkably diverse musical industry. And even though she moved to Catalina Island off the coast of Southern California at an early age, Atlanta had already left its mark on her life to come. As a child, she was drawn to the stage. First with impromptu, but very choreographed performances, as famous choreographers from LA would travel to Catalina, the Island of Romance, and work with developing the children there. Then, by her early teens, she found herself in front of audiences in more prominent settings, like the Wilshire Ebell Theater in LA, as well as the famous Casino Theater on Catalina Island. Now, Bekx has launched her career into the music industry as she draws off her childhood years spent camping, surfing, horseback riding, hunting and fishing, as well as her years of vocal training, performances, competitions and so much time just doing what she loves–singing. She has grown as a performer, as an artist and as a person–she has dedicated her life to chasing her musical dreams and is excited to share her story and her talents with anyone who will listen. Now, she is eager to introduce youto Bekx. The journey hasn't been easy. Bekx has had her share of growing pains, life lessons and difficult or deals along the way. But no matter what has happened, she has always overcome and has used those experiences to mold a fresh new outlook on life. As a songwriter and performer, she summons both the good times and the challenging as she seeks to breathe life into her music and invite others to feel the emotions behind her powerful vocals.Bekx has come a long way since Atlanta first left its mark. She has lived in multiple cities from coast to coast and met many diverse and influential people. In early 2019, the journey led her to Nashville, where she plans to leave her mark on listeners and labels alike. Already in her short time in Music City, she has been in the studio with Grammy-winning country artist Rebecca Lynn Howard and rising hip-hop star JC. She has worked alongside veteran artist & producer, Lincoln “Barnone” Morris. She released her first single, “Scissors”, in June 2019, and confidently celebrated its rise to #51 on the Music Row charts. She followed that release with an original and exciting Christmas song, “I Still Believe”, as well as her firstEP,Rabbit Hole. Recently, she has completed a radio tour across the southeast, made an appearance on the Red Carpet in LA at the Saturn Awards, and has performed twice at the music festival SXSW in Austin,TX. Bekx has been in the studio for the last three years, churning out the lyrics and vocals for all of her current and upcoming original releases. Now, she is working on her second studio EP and cannot wait to share her more of her compelling lyrics and formidable sound. She is ready to share herself with the world, and she feels that the world is ready!instagram.com/bekxmusicyoutube.com/bekxmusichttps://open.spotify.com/artist/0YHJ5LhJ309STNOJ9pJxER?si=1iBsrYGNRfq_2FNOeVe99wHost - Trey MitchellIG - treymitchellphotographyIG - feeding_the_senses_unsensoredFB - facebook.com/profile.php?id=100074368084848Sponsorship Information - ftsunashville@gmail.comTheme Song - The Wanshttps://www.thewansmusic.com/

Send us a Text Message. The beloved Sweet Pickles books. Some forgotten 90s musical acts. The most toxic workplace I've experienced. Episode 143 of the podcast has a bit of everything. It begins with the return of a podcast staple, Restaurant Storytime. This 8th installment is a segment 143 episodes in the making. Toxic workplaces are unfortunately all too common. This segment reveals the most toxic place I've been a part of. It might veer off into rant territory at times but it's also packed with laughs. You won't believe your ears at some of the memories this segment evokes. The mood gets lighter as we go way Back In the Day to a beloved part of many Gen-Xer's childhoods. Sweet Pickles was a series of books featuring animals with unique personalities kids could relate to. It was also a brand that extended into other forms of merchandise. Smart moms know how kids' minds grow! This week's Top 5 will dive into some forgotten 1990s musical artists who were big during the decade but perhaps have faded with time. Hopefully, this segment will shine a new light back on them. This Week In History and Time Capsule will be centered around a barrier once thought to be beyond the human body, the sub-4 minute mile. For more great content become a subscriber on Patreon!Helpful Links from this EpisodeThe Lady of the Dunes.comPurchase My New Book Cape Cod Beyond the Beach! In My Footsteps: A Cape Cod Travel Guide(2nd Edition)Hooked By Kiwi - Etsy.comWear Your Wish.com - Clothing, Accessories, and moreDJ Williams MusicKeeKee's Cape Cod KitchenChristopher Setterlund.comCape Cod Living - Zazzle StoreSubscribe on YouTube!Initial Impressions 2.0 BlogListen to Episode 142 here Support the Show.
This is your chance, Rebels! Have a listen to the interview with an up and coming artist, who's bringing his unique musical style to the masses. I don't know much about techno, dubstep, or bass and drum. I thought they were the 2000's version of The 3 Stooges. (Just ask your parents.) I had suggested to Autonex after our interview about collaborating with previous guest OK Cello. Now that's a combo that could upend the music world! Thanks for coming on the show, Autonex! Here's the link to the Autonex single, "Surrender" : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-6JsIKBmLUo Programming Note: "Sherpa Selects" airs on Saturdays. A major theme that reappears in episode after episode of Art Restart is the fact that audiences/consumers, institutions/businesses and sometimes even artists themselves often fail to recognize that art is labor, not a pastime or an unconventional way to earn a living. A recent labor action by America's premier ballet company served as a fresh reminder. On February 6 of this year, by an overwhelming majority, the dancers and stage managers of American Ballet Theatre voted to authorize a strike. Among their demands were an increase in wages that had been frozen since the Great Recession of 2008 as well as an adjustment to their working hours. Represented by their union, AGMA (American Guild of Musical Artists), after approximately three weeks of negotiations, the ABT company members and management were able to reach an agreement and avert a strike. The terms of the new agreement include cost-of-living increases of between 9 and 19% (varying by rank) across three years, their workday being shifted a half-hour earlier and reduced by one half-hour on Saturdays and new parental-leave benefits and a commitment to keep pregnant dancers on contract until the time of the dancer's choosing. In this interview, Art Restart speaks with Griff Braun, AGMA's national organizing director, who was himself once an ABT company member. He speaks about the nuts and bolts of how and why dancers unionize and describes the challenges and opportunities of organizing as an artist in 2024 America. https://www.musicalartists.org/griff-braun-national-organizing-director-professional-bio/
