BYSK is once again kicking off PRIDE month with one of our previously aired, but absolutely ESSENTIAL PRIDE Broads - MARSHA "Pay It No Mind" JOHNSON! Marsha was one of the figureheads in the fight for LGBTQ rights and a true legend. She was (allegedly) at the Stonewall Inn on the night the riots broke out, kicking off the LGBTQ revolution. She also helped organize the first Pride Parade and founded STAR house, a home for abandoned or homeless LGBT children and young adults to keep them off the streets (her story inspired the hit show “Pose” on FX!). She always wore her flower crowns, but her life was far from glamorous. From life on the streets and sleeping under flower tables, to jail cells, to fighting for drag queen respect in the gay community, and eventually her untimely and tragic death, Marsha was a Queen who deeply understood you only have one life, and you've got to live it to it's fullest, brightest and most beautiful. — A Broad is a woman who lives by her own rules. We're lucky this week to be joined by Barabara Pomo, staunch ally. Shaped by the loss of her older gay brother to AIDS in the late 1980s, Barbara Poma has become an integral part of the LGBTQ community. First, she bought and managed the Pulse Disco in Orlando, Fla., turning it into a multi cultural haven for queers and their families and after a tragic terrorist shooting and the deaths of 49 patrons by a hate-filled 29 y.o. man in June 2016, Barbara realized it could never be re-opened. So, she set about figuring out how to create a memorial and museum to pay appropriate tribute to those who lost their lives that night - One Pulse Foundation is the result.
Actor and filmmaker Yuval David knows the power of advocacy. Encouraged to change his name because it was “too foreign,” David stayed true to who he was, and rose through the industry to win multiple Emmys, as well as become a staunch supporter of the Jewish and LGBTQ communities. And despite pressure from outside forces, including some of his peers, he continues to fight Jew hatred and anti-Zionism daily. Host Steven Shalowitz sits down with David to discuss the discrimination he's faced in the film industry and how he rose above it, what Zionism means to him, and his LGBTQ activism in the Middle East.
Latino and LGBTQ activist Nicole Murray Ramirez is living San Diego history, and this weekend, he'll get an honorary street name to prove it. Starting Saturday, Dec. 3, the corner of Harvey Milk and Centre streets in Hillcrest will be known as Nicole Murray Ramirez Way.

On today's show, Arkansans reckon with extreme violence against members of the LGBTQ community. Arkansas state senator Joyce Elliot launches Get Loud Arkansas! as her 20-year career in the state legislature ends. Plus, the Northwest Arkansas Food Bank experiences more demand and the rock band Little Feat returns to the state.
It's never easy to be different, to be the other. As Jews and Israelis, we know this just as well as anyone else. To be “the other” can often be devastating, even lethal. That's why it's important to be tolerant, to recognize others, to acknowledge them and sometimes even to fight on their behalf. One such group are those who identify as LGBTQ. Historically, religious persecution, social outcasting, violence or other abuses have plagued LGBTQ people. In the harsh reality of the Middle East, Israel is the only country where members of the LGBTQ community enjoy full rights… well, except for marriage. Then again, Israel just held elections and from the looks of it, the most solidly right wing government in over a decade is on its way to power. Itamar Ben Gvir is even a likely candidate for Minister of Public Security, overseeing the police. Should this be cause for concern? To talk about all this, we're excited to be joined by Yuval David, an actor and activist who's an ardent advocate for the LGBTQ community. Inspired by his Jewish and Israeli-American roots, Yuval advocates for marginalized communities through organizations including the National LGBTQ Task Force, GLAAD, HRC and many many more. As an actor, Yuval's played major roles in short and feature films, television and theatre, including ABC's “What Would You Do”, CBS's “Madam Secretary”, and much much more. Yuval also produces, directs, and writes. We are thrilled to be joined by Yuval today to discuss the LGBTQ community. www.YuvalDavid.com www.YouTube.com/YuvalDavid www.Instagram.com/Yuval_David_ www.Facebook.com/YuvalDavid www.Twitter.com/YuvalDavid www.IMDB.me/YuvalDavid www.Linkedin.com/in/yuval-david
From New York's Stonewall Uprising in 1969, through the AIDS epidemic of the 1980s, to the 2015 Supreme Court decision that declared same-sex marriage legal in every state, LGBTQ+ rights in the U.S. have advanced thanks to the tireless work of activists and advocates. Now a growing backlash is taking aim at these rights in the U.S. and threatening to roll back decades of progress in equality. Today's forum looks at both the past and the future of the struggle for equality in Central Ohio through the eyes of four generations of activists. The panelists are: Chris Cozad, LGBTQ+ Activist and Owner & President, Alternative Auto Care Karen Hewitt, Associate Director, Leadership Columbus, and Co-Founder, The Ohio REST Collective José Rodriguez, Vice President, Lighthouse Behavioral Health Solutions Joseph Soza, Central Ohio Regional Organizer, Equality Ohio The host is Ronald Murray, President, Stonewall Columbus Board of Trustees, and MARCH Program Director, Franklin County Municipal Court This forum was made possible by the Lynn Greer Legacy in Civic Engagement Fund and was sponsored by Battelle and Lighthouse Behavioral Health Solutions. Bob Lehman is the executive director of the San Diego Museum Council, which oversees more than 50 museums in the county, and he's the former director of the San Diego Gay Men's Chorus. So he's definitely influential in the arts. But he's also a veteran and an activist who helped repeal the military's Don't Ask Don't Tell policy, and he actually left the service so that he could marry his now-husband in 2008.
Welcome back to part 2 of the Love Beyond The Romantic Vegetation series, Authenticity and the Discovery of Self. In episode 1 we explored the connections between our own Self-love and the intimacy in our relationships, and why we may not be experiencing the deep friendships we long for. We also began to explore what it feels like to be a care”giver” instead of a care”taker” in relationships. In this episode, we go deeper into what it feels and looks like to be a “caregiver” instead of a “caretaker” in relationships. For us, caregiving includes ensuring that we are whole, centered, and energized and then helping others from a place of self love and cup overflow. For us, caretaking is when we try to share energy from a deficit, which often ends up serving our own ego instead of the person we want to help. Our past Selves also inspire us to believe that we do not need to prove our worthiness or suffer through pain in order to form strong bonds or feel intense love or intimacy with others and ourSelves, it can be easeful. They remind us that we have tools at our disposal like Human Design, adornment, and rituals to help us honor our authentic selves; and that we can get better at recognizing when we need to rest, feel unsafe, or when we carry feelings that are not truly ours. This acceptance and rebalance of the Self allows us to show up more fully and be ready to receive and give love.
