Description: Karl Urban (Billy Butcher) Seven years of blood, corporate satire, and unhinged superhero mayhem have all come down to this. Cat and Paul are back for the ultimate deep-dive into the series finale of The Boys, Season 5, Episode 8: “Blood and Bone.” The show completely threw out the comic books and gave us a beautifully tragic, poetic, and utterly jaw-dropping final hour. We are breaking down every single massive payoff: The Undercard Chaos: We kick things off with the emotional whiplash of Frenchie’s wild last will and testament, followed by Kimiko blasting Sister Sage into a permanent, Orlando-bound “dimwit”. Plus, we celebrate the absolute poetic justice of MM weaponizing a BDSM ball gag against Oh Father and Starlight feeding The Deep to an octopus bent on avenging Ambrosius. The Oval Office Execution: Homelander's “Messiah” tour comes to a pathetic, weeping halt. We dissect the incredible moment Kimiko depowers him and Butcher delivers the ultimate closure—using a bloody crowbar to end the god-king on live television, echoing the very first supe encounter from the pilot. The Final Stand: The real tragedy wasn’t Homelander; it was the final confrontation between Hughie and a deeply broken Butcher over a global virus threat. We break down Hughie’s devastating choice to pull the trigger to save the world, proving that it really does just hurt to be human. The Bittersweet Epilogue: From MM taking in Ryan to Kimiko's healing trip to France, we unpack where the survivors land. Most importantly, we dive into the beautiful full-circle pilot echoes of Hughie and Annie running a quiet A/V store, waiting on a baby girl named Robin, while “Piano Man” brings the curtain down. The Ultimate Question: In the end, did the show argue that Butcher was just as dangerous as Homelander, or did Hughie's final act break the cycle of violence for good? The guys are joined once again by Brian Dunne, this time to talk about “Storm Front” from Billy Joel. James Faye Hall, better known as Roy Hall, was born in Big Stone Gap, Virginia, in 1921. He died in Mt. Juliet, Tennessee in 1984. Between those dates is a story about a hillbilly boogie pianist who played for Uncle Dave Macon in a traveling version of the Grand Ole Opry as a child, formed his own hillbilly/R&B band. He found success in Detroit, worked as a session musician for such Nashville stars as Webb Pierce, Marty Robbins and Red Foley, and was on the very cusp of stardom as a rockabilly act in the 1950s, only to have it slip away from him. Oh, by the way, he's also credited by many to have co-written “Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On,” which made Jerry Lee Lewis a rock and roll legend. Join us as we tell the fascinating story of Roy Hall, another one of the Stories of Appalachia. TALK TO ME, TEXT ITSome stories land like a punch; others feel like a hand on your shoulder. We start with Minnesota's headline-grabbing shooting involving a DHS officer and a protester and break down the uneasy balance between lawful protest, public order, and necessary force. Instead of shouting past each other, we admit the gray areas: how often can officers yield ground, what counts as escalation, and why media tone shapes whether we learn anything at all. From there, we explore trust in conservative media and why many listeners are exhausted by personalities who mistake volume for value. We spotlight Dennis Michael Lynch as a thoughtful alternative: documentary roots, clear reporting, and an eye for the “meat and potatoes” of policy and border security. If you crave substance over spectacle, this is a practical way to recalibrate your news diet without giving up on core issues or tough conversations. Then the energy lifts with a rare feel-good note: Billy Joel's surprise return to the stage after a diagnosis of normal pressure hydrocephalus. Cane or not, the Piano Man still moves a crowd, and that resilience reminds us why great songwriting outlasts the news cycle. We share a personal concert memory, because sometimes joy and nostalgia are the most honest metrics we have for what matters. We wrap with Julia Roberts' revealing reflection on nearly passing up Notting Hill—proof that scripts can sound ridiculous before they become classics. That candid moment opens a fun debate about favorite Roberts roles and why certain films stick. Your turn: what's your pick, and what does it say about the type of stories you love?If this mix of clear-eyed news, smarter media picks, and a dose of cultural joy resonates, follow the show, share it with a friend, and leave a quick review. After watching the recent HBO documentary series on the life of Billy Joel, Shane decided to reopen his investigation of the bar that inspired Piano Man. The question he posed on the pilot episode was whether his dad had visited the famous bar back in 1973, and whether he might even be one of the characters mentioned in the song. If you're new to the program, the first part of this episode features Shane's original exploration, along with selections from a variety of additional interviews he recorded since that time. The final segment features a brand new segment featuring his conversations with people involved in the recent HBO documentary.SHOW NOTESRelated EpisodesNew Evidence for The Executive Room, with John Gibson #55Evidential Reasoning, #56 with Craig PartonDealing with Discrepancies, #57 with J. My husband and I reflect on the completely unexpected responsibility given to us. This responsibility would become a gift that we will never forget or take for granted. With no family or children, my husband became the caretaker for a recently widowed man with a newly discovered dementia diagnosis. Listen as my husband and the "Tales From Two Townies" better half returns to talk about a years-in-the-making arrangement that came to fruition, spending each lunch hour with a heartbroken, rapidly aging former piano teacher with no kids or family to rely on, going from the position of student to caretaker, the last email from his ailing wife, navigating insurance, doctors appointments, the health care system and assisted living. After two years of daily visits and chats, Andrew takes time to reflect on how he will remember his childhood piano teacher ... and friend.Emily Harrington, here! Discograffiti is the deep-dive podcast for music obsessives. In this episode, host Dave Gebroe talks with the epitome of DIY punk spirit (who can also write a pop hook like the best of ‘em), the great Mark Robinson (of Unrest, Grenadine, Air Miami, Flint Flon, Uncomfortable Police, et al), and together they discuss Billy Joel's entire recorded output with commentary, stories, and star ratings for every release. If you're a long-time listener, then you know that Dave has harbored a long-time hatred of Billy Joel…so why the sudden turnaround in taste? Part 2 tackles his two early-1970s, California-based albums after signing with Columbia Records: Piano Man & Streetlife Serenade. Here are just a few of the many things that Mark discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast: The multitude of genres that Billy tries out while in California during the early 1970s, before settling into his known style; The violent altercation that host Dave Gebroe may have had with the real-life Captain Jack's son; The connective threads that bind Billy and Mark as artists that must create no matter what; The not-very-well-known gang of Billy Joel instrumentals that ended in this era; Billy's “saving a hooker” song that's somehow actually taken from his own personal life; The amount of money that Billy made off the Piano Man LP; And an in-depth deep dive on every song off Piano Man and Streetlife Serenade. On this week's episode, host Ted Asregadoo sits down with two of his biggest Billy Joel fan friends, Jeff Giles and Jason Hare, to discuss the recent HBO documentary, And So It Goes. Jeff is the founder of Popdose, host of The Record Player podcast, and creator of the new site Harmonic, while Jason is also a co-founder of Popdose and an avid triathlete. Ted, who was once a DJ imprisoned by the monotony of adult contemporary radio, has a complicated relationship with Joel's music. Forced to play the same nine hit songs on repeat for 13 years, he now has an aversion to tunes like "Piano Man" and "Just the Way You Are." The conversation about the documentary leads to a much deeper discussion of Joel's albums, particularly his 1982 masterpiece, The Nylon Curtain. Both Ted and Jeff agree that this melancholy and often sad album is Joel's creative peak—a personal and generational biography of being a Baby Boomer. In contrast, Jason shares a more foundational love for Joel's music, recalling how hearing "Scenes From an Italian Restaurant" as a kid was what inspired him to start taking piano lessons. Join the trio as they dissect the documentary, debate the brilliance of The Nylon Curtain, and explore Billy Joel's music. ______________________________________ This episode of Planet LP is sponsored by Steve Fox's Old School. [REBROADCAST FROM July 17, 2025] The new two-part documentary "Billy Joel: And So It Goes" provides an in-depth look into the life and career of America's beloved piano man. Co-director Susan Lacy discusses the film, which is streaming on HBO Max. Listeners weigh in with their favorite Billy Joel memories and performances.
Although he has largely stopped writing and recording music since 1993's "River of Dreams," Billy Joel has remained a steady force on classic rock radio (or streaming) as well as at New York's Madison Square Garden. With so many documentaries and biopics popping up in recent years, it was only a matter of time before filmmakers tackled the "Piano Man." HBO's recent two-part documentary "And So It Goes" takes viewers on a journey from his roots on Long Island through four marriages, a bad record deal, financial problems and a massive catalog of pop hits. And if that wasn't enough, there's also the story of his Jewish grandparents surviving Nazi Germany. In this episode, co-host and music fan Terry Lipshetz talks the new documentary, while co-host Bruce Miller then discusses the new drama "East of Wall" that critics have been raving about. Miller also shares his interview with director Kate Beecroft and stars Tabitha Zimiga and Porscha Zuniga. The movie was filmed in South Dakota. About the show Streamed & Screened is a podcast about movies and TV hosted by Bruce Miller, a longtime entertainment reporter who is now the editor of the Sioux City Journal in Iowa and Terry Lipshetz, a senior producer for Lee Enterprises based in Madison, Wisconsin. The show was named Best Podcast in the 2025 Iowa Better Newspaper Contest. Theme music Thunder City by Lunareh, used under license from Soundstripe. YouTube clearance: FV694ULMCJQDG0IY

We open this week in a very unexpected place: "Home," the 2010 hit by Edward Sharpe And The Magnetic Zeros, which had a viral moment this week that went on for days. What is it about this song that people hate so much, and what are some of the actual worst songs of all time? (0:58)The guys also talk about the recent Billy Joel documentary, which Ian recently watched, and pick the modern-day equivalent to the Piano Man (16:47). After a brief check-in on the Fantasy Album Draft (27:45), Steven and Ian run down a list of classic albums turning 20 in the next month or so, including landmark releases from My Morning Jacket, the New Pornographers, Wolf Parade, and more (30:42). According to many Christians today, faith isn't based on external facts or evidence, but is considered an internal, subjective feeling, intuition, or experience. Dave and Milt welcome two top-shelf Billy Joelologists: Scott Eckstein and Russ Flicker. We crack open the emotional songbook that is the HBO Max doc And So It Goes—a title that screams “quiet devastation,” like only Billy can. We're not just talking about Uptown Girl and Glass Houses. We go deep: the musical shapeshifting, the very Jewish energy, the marriages that aged like milk, the loyal bandmates that got canned, and the critics who never really got him (but oh, how we do). You'll hear memories of epic Billy concerts, emotional gut-punch lyrics, underloved deep cuts, and hot takes on everything from “tonic and gin” to “Scenes from an Italian Restaurant” being the Bohemian Rhapsody of Long Island. It's a love letter. It's a roast. It's a nuanced nosedive into the joy, the ache, and the genius of one of pop music's most fascinating contradictions: a guy who made stadiums weep and critics wince. Come for the legacy, stay for the therapy session. Topics 00:00 –
When asked to define the word “faith,” the majority of Christians polled at a variety of Christian events and gatherings described it a “blind leap.” But is this idea taught anywhere in the Bible? The Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture published by IVP promotes a vital link between the varied Christian traditions of today and our common ancient ancestors in the faith. "The initial cry of the Reformation was ad fontes--back to the sources! The Ancient Christian Commentary Series is a marvelous tool for the recovery of biblical wisdom in today's church. Not just another scholarly project, the ACCS is a major source for the renewal of preaching, theology and Christian devotion." — Timothy George"Contemporary pastors do not stand alone. We are not the first generation of preachers to wrestle with the challenges of communicating the gospel. The Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture puts us in conversation with our colleagues from the past, that great cloud of witnesses who preceded us in this vocation. This commentary enables us to receive their deep spiritual insights, their encouragement, and guidance for present-day interpretation and preaching of the Word." — William Willimon Get full access to The Humble Skeptic at www.humbleskeptic.com/subscribe

Donald Trump actually did shock the world with his announcement he's working with 75 friendly countries to not only improve America's trade situation with them, he's partnering with them to take down China's practices of ripping everyone off. Greg Cote kicks off the show with one of his best hits, the Gary Stevens and Bernie Parmalee story. Then, Dan examines Kevin Durant's comments in response to an ESPN report about Suns locker room toxicity and reveals how Suns owner Matt Ishbia's management of Phoenix impacted the Miami Heat. Also, is crying male weakness? The story from Jimmy Butler's camp's perspective seems to think so. Plus, how much better are the Eagles than the Chiefs? Is Howie Roseman a genius? Did Andy Reid get undressed? Did the Chiefs just need to run the damn ball? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Dude, it's December? Brandi and Wells are back from Thanksgiving with a new episode that includes an update about why Brandi has been offline and a rant from Wells about the biggest villain of all time. It's hard to go about normal life when time is moving at superspeed and aliens are taking over, but your hosts do not leave you hanging this week with plenty of new faves. For example, Brandi watched a new movie that involves constantly being high and Wells cried during a kid's movie! They also give some suggestions about what content to skip, which might actually include Harry Potter (if you're anything like Brandi), but definitely does not include the best Christmas movie of all time, The Family Stone. Plus, they discuss the true meaning behind Billy Joel's Piano Man, explain why horses don't deserve their bad rap, and introduce a new segment: Fun Mormon Facts!
