Welcome back to Season 10 of the OEA Grow podcast, in which our host Sakura Hamada explores how we as educators can support newly arrived students. In this first episode of the season, Sakura speaks with Ethelyn Tumalad from Clackamas High School about her work with the AVID program (Advancement Via Individual Determination). This program supports students throughout all four years of high school to prepare them for college as first-generation students. Ethelyn tells us that the goal is twofold - to help students discover their authentic selves and feel confident that they belong. Sakura and Ethelyn discuss from personal experience how terrifying the classroom can be for newly arrived students. They explain how educators in any classroom can support students by really listening to each student and celebrating accomplishments rather than focusing on deficits. This week's episode will suggest ways to incorporate student-centered learning to help students respect one another and see the strengths in each other's differences.    Resources -  OEA Member Spotlight on Ethelyn Tumalad Ethelyn Tumalad named Oregon Teacher of the Year, 2022 AVID program   Books recommended by Ethelyn -   Tony DelaRosa. The latest expansion of our Career and College Pathways work is ensuring that elementary students are exposed to and gain awareness of the opportunities that await them as they progress through their PK-12 experience. Over the next three years, this will be accomplished by providing every elementary school with age-appropriate career kits for each grade level. Included in the kits are activities related to the career, culturally-relevant texts with diverse characters, and career-related realia. The Hillsboro Schools Foundation is partnering with HSD to make these kits a reality, and are calling their fundraising effort ¡Imagina Tu Aventura! Or Imagine Your Adventure!. In late August, Foundation staff and volunteers gathered at Atfalati Ridge Elementary School to put together the first round of kits for grades K, 1, and 3, and help deliver them to schools. Our featured staff member is Laury Rodriguez from Liberty High School. She has been named one of sixteen regional finalists for the 2022-23 Oregon Teacher of the Year Award! A Liberty High School student herself, Laury returned to the school as a family outreach liaison and bilingual assistant in 2015 after graduating from Portland State. Since earning her Master's degree in 2019, she has served Liberty students by teaching Math, Science, Dual Language, and AVID. She also advises the MEChA Club and has taught summer school, working to develop and align a program that is responsive to student needs. Laury was recognized during an all-school assembly at Liberty on Friday, September 16th. Representatives from the Oregon Lottery - one of the sponsors of the Oregon Teacher of the Year Program - were on hand to present her with a $1,000 check and a banner announcing her regional finalist status. The 2022-23 Oregon Teacher of the Year winner will be announced in early October and we can't wait to hear the results. Way to go, Laury! You make us Proud to be HSD! Our bond update is on the construction progress at Elementary School 29 in South Hillsboro. Beginning last week, steel posts are now being erected on the foundation, starting the building of the school structure itself. Keep track via cameras on site that provide near real-time views of the work on the site; updated every 15 minutes, you can go back in time or view the time-lapse. Project photos and other archives are also posted to hillsboro-bond.org. Hot News is produced and emailed to HSD families and staff each week school is in session. Please add the address to your “safe sender” list to make sure you always receive the latest issue. In this latest episode, we are thrilled to interview Willie Carver, the 2022 Kentucky Teacher of the Year, who recently resigned from his position as a high school teacher in a public school, due to homophobia and harrassment. Those of you who listened to our episodes about Bret Bigham, 2014 Oregon Teacher of the Year (Season 1 Episodes 26 and 27) will be struck by the similarities in these stories. Sadly, there is an eight year difference between them-meaning that even all those years later, homophobic behavior by is still present and thriving in schools. Give a listen to Willie's interview, which will make it clear as to why he was given the Teacher of the Year honor to begin with, and will also cause you to shake your head and wonder, "What can be done to stop this from happening?" "My mission is to create an environment where all students feel they belong. I will continue my efforts each day to be an educator who makes a difference for equity and social justice." Nicole Butler-Hooton Episode 19 features one of the kindest, most selfless, talented, and foreword thinking educators in our country, Nicole Butler-Hooton. In 2021 he earned the most prestigious award of Oregon Teacher of the Year. Nicole is a much-loved 2nd Grade Teacher at Irving Elementary School in Eugene, Oregon with over 14 years of experience in the classroom. Nicole is doing so much to advance thinking in Oregon and beyond on equity as it relates to anti-colonial education. As an indigenous woman herself, she is investing a lot of time and energy into supporting other indigenous educators around the country. Furthermore, Nicole has become an amazing sounding board for many folks (including myself) and quite frankly has become a friend throughout this whole process of interviewing and releasing this episode. Episode Highlight Quotes: "Thinking about the framework for anti-racist or anti-bias education...that is something that is a passion of mine." "Knowing our students is more than just teaching what's in the book. In order to teach, we have to know our students....our students are our framework for teaching." "Being an unconventional teacher means, to me, teaching with your heart and finding where your joy is, and where your passion is." "Being vulnerable and open minded with this profession can really go the extra mile for parents and students." "Another thing that I think is really important in our work that we're doing is to know that we're not the expert at all things. And it's ok to showcase that to our students. It's ok to ask for help." "Not all opinions are equal. Some opinions are oppressive."
