Today’s episode is a really special one for me because in this episode I got to interview my 6th grade teacher! In today's episode I also talk about watching Hamilton for the first time. Go watch it!Callie was my 6th grade teacher and she and I talk about that in the interview. In addition to being a teacher, Callie is a wife, mother, writer, Anne Arbor, Michigan resident, and the author of The Teacher Diaries, and Twirl: My Life With Stories, Writing, and Clothes.Callie and I re-connected via Facebook 10 years ago and I have been following her career since then. In that time, I have seen her post pictures of her two girls as they grew from toddlers to pre-teens. I have also seen Callie post blogs that she wrote, then books that she contributed to, then a book she wrote herself and another book she wrote herself. As I have had my own babies while simultaneously started my own independent creative endeavor in starting this podcast, I have kept Callie’s journey in the back of my mind. So, I thought it would be really fun and cool to invite her on the show and get her take on her journey first hand! The goal of our conversation is to let young moms know that you can be a fantastic mother and follow your passion at the same time!In our discussion we talk about: The story of how Callie started writingThe idea of being selfless and being a good mother as two separate ideas"creativity and parenthood are two things that you don't know how it will turn out in the end"Setting small goals The story of Callie's husband, Jesse, encouraging her to follow her passion for writing "You're always a mother, you're not only a mother" (Jesse's fantastic quote that launched the whole thing!)Coffee and CrumbsWriting her books: The Teacher Diaries and Twirl: My Life With Stories, Writing, and ClothesTeaching writing workshopsExhaleHow to get in touch with Callie:www.calliefeyen.comcalliefeyen@gmail.comSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/findingyourvillagepod?fan_landing=true)

Today for our friendship over 40 series I'm talking with my friend Callie Feyen, author of The Teacher Diaries: Romeo & Juliet and Twirl. We chat about how making friends has changed for us as we've gotten older and how our conversations have morphed from nap schedules to navigating our teens' technology and talking about our jobs. Callie introduces us to her friends in her memoir Twirl, so we talk about she's maintaining these friendships from high school all the way into her forties, as well as what she would tell her thirty-year-old self. We talk about hanging out without the kids, how we coach our kids to be kind to each other so the adults can still hang out during these volatile middle school years, and how, thankfully, we are separate from our kids, with separate friendships. Come on over and hang out with Callie and me, listen in, and lighten up! We're in the middle of our series, lighten up about illness, and today I'm talking with my friend Lesley Miller. Lesley and I met through Coffee+Crumbs, she's an incredible writer, and she's currently going through what she calls her second cancer year. Her husband Jonathan had cancer, and now her son Owen was diagnosed last October and has been going through treatment. We chat about the differences and similarities between adult cancer and childhood cancer, and how it's impacted her life and her other kids. Lesley shares what cancer has taught her, how they're coping and lightening up in the middle of this, and how she deals with the emotional burden of caring for her family. She says that the biggest gift people can give to people going through illness is seeing them. She shares how can we support our friends with kids dealing with life-threatening illnesses and advises us to let the parents take the lead. And maybe my favorite part of the interview is her insight into lightening up, how she sees two parts to lightening up - the soul work part and the everyday fun stuff. You have to do the first one in order to have the second. Lesley is incredibly helpful and insightful so if you have people in your life currently walking through childhood cancer and you're wondering how to support them, this is the perfect conversation for you, so listen in and lighten up. Today I'm talking with my Coffee+Crumbs buddy Callie Feyen, author of the new book, The Teacher Diaries: Romeo & Juliet. We talk about dirty emojis, getting caught passing notes in class, pumping gas, and I think I drop my greatest segue ever, "speaking of blowing up at a gas station," how do you think people need to lighten up? Callie is super wise and she talks about teaching, writing, and her new book, The Teacher Diaries, which she says is a love letter to teaching middle school. Whether you're star-crossed lovers or would like to flip Cupid the bird this Valentine's day, listen in and lighten up.   Links from the show: The Teacher Diaries: Romeo & Juliet Find Callie on Twitter and Instagram Coffee+Crumbs Give Your Child the World, by Jamie Martin Wonder Auggie & Me Festival of Faith & Writing Two essays from Callie: "Romeo & Juliet: Kissing a Fair Dragon in His Cave" "How to Tell a Butt Joke"

I was just going to be a mom. That was what I was going to do." -- Callie "I had always written. Even before I was seriously writing, I was writing." -- Callie "What I loved about writing even as a little girl was that I loved to go back and look at something again and again." -- Callie "It’s always been a balm for me to revisit something." -- Callie "I remember thinking: that is exactly what I love to do." -- Callie "I basically DIY-d my own career. I teach part time. I write part time. I am a mom all the time." -- Callie "I had six hours a week to write. I would get any textbook I could find and I would go to a coffeeshop and I would just write for three hours." -- Callie "It’s really good to hear from someone who has done that and made it work and says it was worth it. It’s encouraging". -- Ashley "I felt so much better after having been away. Sometimes motherhood is like looking at a crossword puzzle - you have to step away a bit to get the answers." -- Callie "It was nice to say 'hi' to myself again." -- Callie "My goal is to write. When I sit down, my goal is to keep writing." -- Callie "I always have a list of things I want to write about." -- Callie "Every single gig I have is because I was already writing." -- Callie "When I am try to change my voice to fit in, I get rejected." -- Callie "When you first hear that voice that says you should never write about this, I think you should." -- Callie "I learned how to write dialogue by studying my daughters." -- Callie "I was reading Virginia Woolf 48 hours ago and now I’m folding socks." -- Callie "If writing is going to be a part of you, you have to fit it into your day." -- Callie "Before I had kids, I decided I was going to write. I had all day! I didn’t write. I did not have the discipline to do it all day." -- Callie "It would make me really sad if somebody said 'I would love to be a mother but I’m a writer so I can’t do that.' ” -- Callie "It’s my story. Nobody is going to write it except for me." -- Callie "That really stings. Maybe you’re no good. Do you want to keep writing anyway? The answer is always yes." -- Callie "You may have this negative emotion. But what else do you feel?" -- Callie "The three of us combined could probably talk about books for 3 or 4 hours straight." -- Abbigail "You can’t be a good writer if you aren’t a good reader." -- Callie
