Many dancers receive unfortunate messages from teachers, peers, directors, ads, and social media that they're “too tall”, “too short”, “too curvy”, “too muscular”, etc. Examples abound of dancers ignoring these labels and finding their place in the dance world, yet these messages often do impact how dancers see themselves and their bodies. Today we're chatting about 5 tips for dancers to build a better body image. These tips are provided by Catherine Drury, a licensed psychotherapist who specializes in supporting dancers through injury, stress, burnout, and career change. Hungry for more? We cannot talk about recovering from an injury in full without addressing the importance of maintaining good mental health or discussing some of the psychological hurdles that appear during this process. A negative outlook, increased stress and decreased motivation can slow recovery. Feelings of isolation and depression can have the same effect. That’s why we thought it was imperative to have a mental health care practitioner on DanceWell this month to talk about recovering from injury.
