What does it really mean to be "techie"? Sean, Kelly, and guest Amelia Hough-Ross dig into the labels we put on ourselves and others — and why curiosity and persistence matter more than credentials. Show Notes Wins of the Week Amelia: Getting both kids to all their activities this week — taekwondo, Chinese language classes, and a piano competition where her oldest did very well Kelly: Running a series of well-attended trainings at school, including a Canva AI session that drew 60 attendees across two campuses, with new audiences (kindergarten and first grade teachers) showing up for the first time Sean: Finally getting fiber internet installed at his house after over a decade of waiting — a major upgrade from cable with latency dropping from 20-30ms to 3ms, at half the cost Links & Resources Mentioned vBrownBag — Tech community show that Amelia is preparing to present at and Sean is scheduled for later in the year PyCon US 2025 — Pittsburgh, May 2025; Education Summit on Thursday, May 14 LEGO Mindstorms — Referenced in Amelia's story about building a vending machine in 4th grade Architects of Intelligence — Book Kelly is currently reading (dense but informative, structured as short stories/interviews) How to Winter by Kari Leibowitz — Book Amelia is reading about mindset and how people approach difficult things Lars von Trier / Bjork / Catherine Deneuve film — Referenced in Amelia's story about visiting a film set in Denmark at age 18 (the film Dancer in the Dark, 2000) Chris Williams / vBrownBag — Mutual connection who introduced Sean and Amelia at AWS re:Invent Announcements PyCon US 2025 — Pittsburgh, PA. It's easy to say someone's hopeless. The harder part is figuring out how to support them to get to that next level." — Amelia Special Guest: Amelia Hough-Ross.

In this episode of Quit Playin', Jazmyn and Amber are joined by friend of the pod and executive mother, Bob The Drag Queen, and absolutely nothing stays on track. What starts with dating habits and main character energy turns into unhinged celebrity takes, a Janet Jackson conversation that refuses to die, bold comedy claims, airport behavior that should be illegal, and opinions that were clearly meant for the group chat. They also get into saying “I love you” too fast, viral engagement ring discourse, pick-me behavior, New Year's goals vs. resolutions, ranch as a personality trait, and why being excited about other people struggling is deeply weird. Dame Tracey Emin is BACK on The GWA Podcast! Hailed for her paintings, videos, textiles, neons, writing, sculptures, installations, and now, her extraordinary work as an educator, raising the next generation of artists at TKE Studios in Margate, right by where we are recording today – Emin has been at the forefront of art for more than four decades. Born in Croydon, and raised in Margate with her twin brother Paul, Emin had a complex child- and teenagehood, which she details in her part-memoir, Strangeland – as well as in works such as Why I Never Became a Dancer or Mad Tracey From Margate. Officially leaving school aged 15, Emin went to Maidstone College of Art, and onto the Royal College – where she won over her interviewees with her impressive sketch book selection. In 1993, she kept a shop in Brick Lane, titled “The Shop”, which ended with a party on her 30th birthday, and that year had her first exhibition – at a then-new gallery called White Cube. On view were objects she had collected over the years – from teenage diaries to toys, paintings, drawings and unsent letters. She titled it My Major Retrospective, just in case she never had another show. However, this was just the start. Emin has since exhibited all over the world – most recently the Yale Center for British Art, where I saw her work a floor above JMW Turner, getting me to realise the painterly relationship between the two artists – despite working 250 years apart – from how Emin plays with moods akin to his stormy weathers, to how the bodies in her paintings evoke his mountainous landscapes, with vein-like rivers. As well as Palazzo Strozzi, highlighting Emin's relationship to the history and iconography in Italian art – such as life, death and the crucifixion, to the decay of the body and enlightenment through spiritual (and sexual) quests. It challenged the city's history, revealing the rawness of a woman's perspective in a culture that so rarely addressed it. Now, we meet in Margate on the occasion of the largest – and perhaps the most important – exhibition in her life so far, “A Second Life” opening at Tate Modern on 27 February, in the very city where her artistic life thrived. But it's also a show taking place after monumental personal shifts, such as her mother's passing in 2016, surviving cancer in 2020, the opening of her free studio-based art school in 2023, but also when the world couldn't be more excited for Emin. She has said of this show to be a “true celebration of living” and I can't wait to find out more…

The Springfield School Board is a mess. One board member left a few weeks ago. After getting rave reviews last year, the superintendent resigned last week, and there's a lot of secrecy and questions about the board right now. We talk with the lone board member who seems to be on the outs with the others. Plus, Oregon's death tax is horrible. There are efforts to change that, but until that happens, what do you do? An expert talks about it.

An Oregon comedian is surprised, but not shocked, when two "Friends" and co-comedians dropped out of a show over political differences. They didn't just pull out; they publicly called him the usual "Nazi" name. We're so done with this immature behavior; we thought he should come on and tell his story. Oh, and the show will go on, without the crybabies.

I'm so sick of the lying and deception. I spoke with a woman today whose husband is an ICE agent. She was telling me online how tough it is. I'm trying to get her to come on a podcast. But her story irked me, and that's what you're going to hear in this episode.
This week on DanceSpeak, I sit down with Brian 'Footwork' Green, a master teacher and influential figure in street and club dance culture whose impact spans generations. Recorded live in August 2025, this episode captures Brian's unfiltered thoughts on musicality, lineage, and what often gets misunderstood about street dance. We explore competition versus convention culture, the realities of the dance economy, and the difference between who you are and the artistic name you move under. Brian speaks honestly about off-beat dancing, “auto-tuned” movement, teaching, trends, and what gets lost when dance drifts away from the heart. The conversation also touches on race, representation, and identity in dance spaces—layered, nuanced, and rooted in lived experience rather than soundbites. Insightful, funny, challenging, and deeply grounded in culture, this episode is for dancers who love dance enough to think about it, question it, and keep it alive. Interview Date: December 14th, 2025.In this episode of Business of Dance, Menina sits down with veteran performer and powerhouse industry staple Sarah Mitchell, who joins the conversation nine months pregnant and still glowing (literally). Sarah takes us back to her beginnings in Western Massachusetts—starting dance at two-and-a-half, falling in love with NYC after seeing the Rockettes at age nine, and boldly moving to New York City with limited money but unstoppable determination. From becoming a Patriots cheerleader in high school (and earning a Super Bowl ring) to landing the Knicks City Dancers through a Good Morning America public vote, Sarah breaks down how dance teams can be a career-launching network, training ground, and built-in community for dancers moving to major markets.Sarah shares a full-circle story that shaped her career: after moving to LA with no plan besides “I have to be here,” she booked American Gladiators—only for the dance cast to be cut. That “loss” led directly to her booking a Jell-O commercial, meeting Jerry Slaughter, and soon finding herself dancing with Christina Aguilera—the same artist she once watched from the audience dreaming of being on stage. From there, the episode dives into Sarah's long-running work with major artists and productions, including Christina Aguilera (spanning roughly 2007/2008 to 2024), Britney Spears' Vegas residency, Burlesque, and the realities of auditioning, touring, and navigating the emotional highs and lows of a freelance performance career—especially as life expands into marriage and motherhood.Shownotes:(0:00) – Welcome(7:01) – Full intro: Sarah Mitchell's career highlights(11:40) – Early beginnings: Western MA, Rockettes inspiration(12:30) – Patriots cheerleaders, Super Bowl ring, early confidence(13:17) – Knicks City Dancers + Good Morning America vote(17:01) – Cross-country move to LA, starting from scratch(20:26) – American Gladiators canceled → pivotal career shift(22:28) – Booking Christina Aguilera through Jerry Slaughter(30:15) – Burlesque stories: doubles, endurance, golden time(50:37) – Q&A wisdom: preparation, mindset, longevity, balanceBiography:A dancer and choreographer with over 20 years of experience, Mitchell has toured and performed with artists such as Christina Aguilera, Katy Perry, Pitbull and Dua Lipa. Jack Tibbetts is new to politics. He's a small farmer who owns a winery and raises cattle. He loves Oregon, sees what's going on, and wants to do something about it. He doesn't intend to make politics his career. He's a little old-fashioned in thinking; perhaps you serve for a couple of terms and limit yourself. I think you'll enjoy this refreshing candidate.
America's election system is a fraudulent mess. The only people who don't want to fix it are those who benefit from the fakery. The man you are about to meet is creating his own army of sorts. He teaches everyday folks how to find voter fraud. He says in Oregon, the whole thing is about to blow up.

ABOUT BOTTOM OF THE PYRAMIDYoung dancer Nia Sioux was only nine years old when she stepped into stardom as one of the original cast members of Lifetime's reality TV show Dance Moms. Nia learned new choreography week after week and competed against dancers from across the country as well as at her own studio. Perhaps her greatest obstacle was suffering through her dance teacher's ranking of the girls against each other in her infamous pyramid, where Nia spent the majority of her time on the bottom-all in front of an audience of millions. But there was much that viewers didn't see. How her experiences in the studio went far beyond what made it into the show. How she was ostracized for not fitting into an aesthetic that wasn't designed for girls like her. How her friendships and her mental health crumbled under the strain of the show. How she lost control of her story and her voice. But don't be fooled-this is a story about resilience. Nia is not looking for pity, sympathy, or validation as she reflects on her experiences. Instead, she is choosing to use her story as a celebration of triumph. Nia finally gets to tell her story in her own way and in her own words. In this captivating memoir, Nia reclaims both the spotlight and her narrative. In addition to going behind the scenes of the seven seasons of Dance Moms, she shows how she fought against the negative perceptions that dominated her tween and teen years and emerged as a confident young woman secure in her talents and her direction. Anyone who has ever felt misunderstood, overlooked, or stuck at the bottom of the pyramid will be inspired by Nia's story of overcoming. "Despite barriers and constant naysayers, assumptions and criticisms, only you know who you are inside and out," Nia says. "And you have the power to create your own narrative, your own level of success."Nia provides a unique perspective on:. Overcoming Adversity: From navigating the toxic environment of competitive dance and reality TV to her harrowing battle with Reflex Neurovascular Dystrophy (RND).. Confronting Racism & Body Shaming: Nia speaks candidly about being the only Black girl on the team, facing microaggressions, and the constant pressure that impacted her self-worth.. Inspiring a Generation: The book is a powerful message for young people, especially young Black girls, about knowing your value, protecting your peace, and pursuing your dreams unapologetically.
