Thomas Helmig.

On a gorgeous evening in May, I sat by a well-tended fire with a group of people I didn't really know as stories were told in the best of possible ways. It had been a long day and I was all ready to go snuggle up in my tent, rising from my seat to do so, when one name caught my ears. Coyote. My behind found itself plonked firmly back into the chair as my body leaned forward eager to be engulfed by the story that emerged from Joseph Heywood's lips. The next day, on seeing Coyote tattooed on my inner right arm, Joseph insisted it was a story I had to carry with me from that day onwards. Just as he has carried it after being gifted it himself by an Indigenous Elder (my apologies for not knowing who this Elder was). It is a traveller kind of story I think, one that likes to meet new people. Peer into them, through them, with them. What you are about to listen to is not a verbatim speaking of the story Joseph told that night by the fire. It is how it moved through me one morning. Next time, I suspect, it will have something different to tell us all. I had tried to sit with this story for the last few months but it always felt to be there, yet at a distance. As if sat at the far corner of the room from me, though willing to share space, not willing to converse. I wasn't sure how it wanted to use my voice, or if it was even possible that the two of us might be companions. As much as I delighted in its company, I wasn't sure if it was happy with mine. But then it suddenly arrived. ‘Now' the story said ‘now we are good to go.' It proceeded to pour through me in the way you are about to hear. Taking me as much by surprise as it might take you, for I have the suspicion that this particular Coyote is not done with either of us yet. We shall just have to wait and see…
In Episode 88, we're diving into 5 Fun Things from our annual Staff Kick-Off—a tradition that helps us reconnect, realign on our mission, and set the tone for a great season. With our big move coming up, we kept this year's meeting intentionally lighter, knowing a more intensive training is on deck soon.1) Staff Lunch Away from the Studio A cozy, cute space that keeps setup and cleanup simple—perfect for keeping the vibe relaxed and focused on connection.2) Big Build Bash Theme Carryover We love a theme for clarity and cohesion. With our new studio underway, the construction vibe we used at Open House made decor, slides, and materials easy and on-brand.3) Fun, Organized Info Delivery + New Staff Resources We used Canva slides and Rhythm visuals to make “important things” engaging. Faculty leads covered key areas: HR processes (payroll, time-off, sub logs), taking roll/Dancer of the month, assistant best practices, and more.We paired this with Rhythmpedia—our new branded Enrollio landing page linking everything (policies, forms, calendars, schedules)—and a staff "BAND" in the BAND app for ongoing team communication.4) Personalized Notebook with Staff Guidelines Digital is great, but a printed, stickered, Rhythm-branded notebook helps everyone follow along. We added our Top 10 must-knows from our Staff Guidelines for quick reference and asked every team member to send their top 5 takeaways from the handbook.5) Rhythm-Branded Bag with Fun Items A last-minute win that felt personal: a cute tote with a Rhythm patch (heat-pressed!), plus fun goodies like a mini brush, hair ties, electronic wipes—and a colorful pouch with cash to purchase role-ready items (dance shoes, a class bag, hair supplies, leggings/dancewear). It's practical, appreciated, and fun to see what everyone picks! This was Part 1 of our season kick-off. -- a lighter version but still very necessary to bring everyone together and put us all on the same page at the start of a new season. A larger training will follow as we prep for our big move later this year. Thanks for listening—we'll be back soon with a brand-new episode!Let's Get Social! Why does tango make us care so much about our clothes? In this episode, I share my own phases - from hiding in all-black outfits, to chasing the “classic tango look” with slits and heels, to questioning what it really means to feel at home in what you wear.We look at the paradox: dressing to hide vs. dressing to attract - and how both can shape the way we feel and move. Clothing has both a functional impact on how we dance, and a psychological one that can be even more powerful.I don't have a final answer. For most of us, it's an evolving question: what makes us feel confident, expressive, and free on the dance floor? If you've ever walked into a milonga feeling awkward in your outfit… or found yourself dancing differently because of what you're wearing… this one's for you.Chicago visit info here: https://imsotango.com/events
Dancer, director and actor Jimmy Hibbard reflects on his 64-year career in show business.
Misha Wurman is a professional bartender and cocktail creator. If you want to get one of Misha's original cocktails, here's 2 options of where you can visit him bartending— Paradise Lost (Tuesdays) 100 2nd Ave., New York, NY, 10003 Public Records upstairs cocktail lounge (Friday/Saturday) 233 Butler St, Brooklyn, NY 11217 Misha Wurman is 27-year-old bartender who Dr. Lisa has basically watched grow up since he was born. He's got this really interesting mixed background - Afro-Caribbean on his mom's side and Russian/Swedish/Jewish on his dad's side. Growing up was pretty complicated because he'd spend weekdays with his mom and grandma in Spanish Harlem, then weekends with his dad in this fancy SoHo loft. When his mom got sick, he ended up living with his dad's parents in Rhode Island for over six years. How He Got Into Bartending Misha went to Hampshire College to study film, but while he was there, he discovered craft cocktails at this bar called The Dancer on the Lower East Side. Now he works at two spots - Paradise Lost and Public Records - making these fancy $18-28 cocktails. He's got this whole creative approach where he calls it "making potions" and comes up with wild combinations like a white mezcal Negroni with cold brew. Every drink he makes has its own story behind it. What Makes Him Good At It The thing is, all that bouncing between different family situations as a kid actually made him really good at reading people and handling different personalities. He sees bartending as more than just mixing drinks - it's about meeting people where they're at emotionally, whether they're out having fun or dealing with something heavy. He loves how collaborative the whole cocktail scene is, and you can tell he's found a way to blend his artistic side with his natural people skills.

In this week's podcast I was honoured to join a four-way conversation between Giovanna and Vanessa de Oliveira Andreotti and Tim Logan of Future Learning Design Podcast, to celebrate the publication of Vanessa's new book, Outgrowing Modernity. Vanessa de Oliveira Andreotti is author of Hospicing Modernity: Facing Humanity's Wrongs and the Implications for Social Activism which we have referenced many times on Accidental Gods. She is also Dean of the Faculty of Education at the University of Victoria in Canada. She is a former Canada Research Chair in Race, Inequalities and Global Change and a former David Lam Chair in Multicultural Education. She is one of the co-founders of the Gesturing Towards Decolonial Futures (GTDF) Arts/Research Collective, is the author of many academic papers and, with Aiden CinnamonTea, is co-author of Burnout From Humans. Most of her published articles and OpEds are available at academia.edu.Her daughter, Giovanna de Oliveira Andreotti, is a Dancer/dance teacher, GTDF member, certified Warm Data Lab host, founder of Rewiring for Reality: Cross Generational Reckoning, and an online course facilitator/co-ordinator. She holds a Bachelor's in Psychology from UBC, postgraduate certifications in Climate Psychology and Embodied Social Justice, and currently coordinates an inquiry that maps pedagogical practices addressing complexity, complicity, collapse, and accountability. This conversation took us deep into the complexity of what it means to be human at this moment when the old order is quite clearly in breakdown. How do we use language? How do we engage with ourselves, each other and the web of life? And what is the web in a world where the first human-created silicon life is co-evolving with us. How do we explore inter and intra-generational responses and capacity for meaning-making in a way that honours everyone, both human and beyond-human? In a world that feels ever more precarious, it was an honour and a delight to be in the company of such bright, deep minds. Thank you to Giovanna, Vanessa and Tim - and I hope you all enjoy this as much as we did. Back from holiday, full of ideas… but second-guessing everything? You’re not alone. In this energising and heart-to-heart episode, Stacey and Rhee take on one of the hardest parts of leadership as a dance studio owner—sticking to your vision, even when it ruffles a few feathers. Whether you're restructuring your comp team, changing your schedule, or raising fees, someone will have an opinion. The question is—are you confident enough to move forward anyway? With stories, practical tips, and a healthy dose of dance teacher truth bombs, this episode is your reminder that your studio doesn’t run on parent approval—it runs on your passion and leadership. Key Takeaways: Confidence is the secret sauce. You had a vision—don’t let other people’s doubts drown it. Mrs. Smith isn’t forever. You’re building for the next five years, not next week’s car park conversation. Backpacks full of resentment are heavy. If you’re exhausted, it’s time to let go of what no longer fits. Your vision deserves better marketing. Speak it clearly. Write it down. Share it with conviction. Who you surround yourself with matters. Not everyone is meant to come with you to the next level. "We really are having the best of times during the worst of times." I'm fresh off my third round of chemotherapy (round two was rough!), and am back on the couch recording with friends. This time for chemo, I was joined by my best friend (and former Dance Spirit colleague!) Michael Anne Bailey, and this is our recap from the day at the infusion center and the few days we spent together. We share our friendship origin story, gush about the things we love most about each other, and talk a lot about eyebrows.
