Today on the podcast, Sean speaks with Chip Henderson on the best way of ministering to preteens is by stepping into their world. To really connect with preteens you need to be culturally relevant to them. When you use things that they are aware of in their world, like current video games, in your message or when you are speaking to them they can relate to it better. Knowing what is popular for them and adding it in as an object lesson will help them to be more engaged in what you are telling them. This is something that can also be helpful in small group questions as well. Chip explains the Cup O Noodle reference and how effective for his preteens using that idea in the question made it that much more relevant. Making current video games they are playing live action games can turn an activity into something they will enjoy more than playing the go to of dodgeball or shuffle your buns. Today on the podcast, Sean shares some of Chip Henderson’s breakout session from the 2019 Online Conference. Chip spoke at the 2019 Preteen Leaders’ Online Conference regarding principles of small groups. Chip offers 8 principles that he has used with his small group leaders. Always ask open ended questions – this will allow preteens to learn for themselves Always draw them back to practical actions – make the preteens think what they will do with this new information. The Bible is the authority not you. Don’t let one student dominate. Call on students specifically. Be ok with silence – don’t worry if you don’t get an answer right away let them ponder a bit. Be ok with asking questions again in a different way. Don’t be tied to the questions. Chip explains it the best when he states that our jobs as leaser is not to give the preteens the water but to lead them to the water. Dr. Chip Henderson has served as the senior pastor and primary teacher at Pinelake Church since 1999. He is well known for his commitment to Biblical, life application teaching. Chip’s passion is to see Christ bring about powerful life-change in people — stirring a spiritual movement that will change the world. Chip’s engaging, transparent communication of the Word has sparked dynamic spiritual growth in the people of Pinelake and beyond. In addition, it has sparked a culture where his favorite self-description, “I’m just one beggar telling another beggar where I found bread,” has resulted in the church growing exponentially in the last 10 years. Since Chip's arrival, the church has grown from 700 to more than 9000 attendees each week and has expanded to five campuses with extensive ministries that are impacting Mississippi and the world. Chip holds a PhD in New Testament studies and is the co-creator of the L3 Journal. He and his wife, Christy, have three children: Rachel, McKenzie and Regan.
