Professor Game Podcast | Rob Alvarez Bucholska chats with gamification gurus, experts and practitioners about education

Get the free Core Drives in the Wild guide, behavioral design applied to real products: professorgame.com/WildCD Episode Summary Dan Shapiro, author of Decoding Genius: The Unexpected Lessons of After-School Chess Club, shares how a father-son hobby turned into a study of why chess has held people's attention for more than 1,500 years. He walks through Miguel Najdorf's feat of holding 45 blindfolded chess games in his head at once, the built-in rating system that keeps every match in a flow state, and the habit of chess notation that teaches players to review their own decisions. Listeners come away with a clearer picture of why well-tuned difficulty curves matter, why chess maps onto Core Drive 3 (Empowerment of Creativity & Feedback) and Core Drive 7 (Unpredictability & Curiosity), and how curiosity itself works as a design tool. About the Host Rob Alvarez is Head of Engagement Strategy, Europe at The Octalysis Group (TOG), a leading gamification and behavioral design consultancy. A globally recognized gamification strategist and TEDx speaker, he founded and hosts Professor Game, the #1 gamification podcast, and has interviewed hundreds of global experts. He designs evidence-based engagement systems that drive motivation, loyalty, and results, and teaches LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® and gamification at top institutions including IE Business School, EFMD, and EBS University across Europe, the Americas, and Asia. Key Takeaways Miguel Najdorf played 45 simultaneous games of blindfolded chess in an exhibition, tracking every board from another room purely through memory. Chess's built-in rating system pairs players against evenly matched opponents, a real-world example of designing for flow state as difficulty rises with skill. Chess notation, the practice of recording every move, teaches players a habit of reviewing their own decisions that most people never apply outside the game. Judit Polgar broke Bobby Fischer's record to become the youngest grandmaster in chess history and remains the strongest female player of all time. Chess has held its relevance for roughly 1,500 years, traveling from the Gupta Empire through Persia and the European Renaissance. Dan Shapiro names curiosity as his personal superpower, mapping directly onto Core Drive 3 (Empowerment of Creativity & Feedback) and Core Drive 7 (Unpredictability & Curiosity). Ken lays out his one real argument for wanting Deshaun Watson to play well tomorrow: not to vindicate Watson himself, but because it would prove the offensive line, receiving corps, and Todd Monken's coaching are legitimately improved heading into the future. He acknowledges most former players and media members he's hearing from want Shedeur Sanders to start, and admits he'd lean that way too if the decision were purely emotional, but insists Watson's track record of costing people their jobs, legacies, and playoff chances means he'd still franchise tag or move on from him even in a best-case scenario. The segment also touches on a Duck Hunt and Mario Kart tangent, Zac Jackson's audio on Sanders' persistent lack of spiral, and the show debating whether "coming in hot" callers can meaningfully compare Browns quarterbacks to old Nintendo games.

Photo by Zac Taheriyan on Unsplash Published 10 August 2026 e564 with Michael, Andy and Michael – a spider filled episode with AdTech and lifesaving robotic implications, VR Mario Kart, quantum lawn mowing, identity management and a whole lot more! Michael, Andy and Michael begin the episode with Spider-Man showing up in an unexpected place – a BMW infotainment system!  The negative reactions from the articles and cohosts were not surprising.  The team have discussed ads you don't want showing up where you don't want them – like on automotive windshields, in AR, and more – see e481 from 2024 in the links below for more on this. The team shifts to a more enjoyable driving experience, where Andy describes what he did to enable a VR version of Mario Kart.  Next up – a reflection on 30 years of Quake with an anniversary release.  Then, appealing to the team's sensibilities on mowing lawns and penchant for NP quantum problems, a lawn mowing optimization game from Pudding.   Switching from software to hardware, the cohosts take a look at a surprising smaller than expected device called the Octopus 16 which measures EEG brain signals to allow the user to control a computer.  See the show notes below for the original box for the Emotiv headset from the July 2015 kickstarter. Then, the titular post for this show, a new robot based on nature for rescuing people who are drowning.  The inspiration for this robot was a fishing spider who walks on water to capture its prey.  Your show notes thankfully do not include pictures of such spiders, though if you click through to the Arxiv paper, there is a picture, so consider yourself warned.  While not discussed in this episode, Dr. Kate Darling's book The New Breed: What Our History with Animals Reveals about Our Future with Robots explores social and ethical themes on robotics that fit nicely into this theme.  Michael M had a chance to hear her speak at Duke earlier this year and an article about that talk is included in the notes below. Rounding out the show, the team wraps up with an identity service from Meta called Facebook Verified.  This free service is intended to help identify when a person is a human and distinguish from AI agents.  The cohosts shared thoughts about this topic and the service before the recording time was exhausted. Aside from spiders, what other robotic form factors based on the animal and insect kingdom would you want to see?  Have your bots

Havva Sevay: Success Is Feedback, Not Metrics—And the Power of Standing in Someone Else's Shoes Read the full Show Notes and search through the world's largest audio library on Agile and Scrum directly on the Scrum Master Toolbox Podcast website: http://bit.ly/SMTP_ShowNotes.   "My success is not metrics or numbers—that was my controller past. I measure myself through feedback, and through team satisfaction." - Havva Sevay   As a former project controller, Havva could have defined success in numbers. Instead, she measures it through feedback and team satisfaction. As long as people keep talking to her—telling her how she can be a better Scrum Master—she considers that success, and she treats even hard feedback as learning. But the most striking part of her definition is the discipline of standing in someone else's shoes. When a developer suggested she'd give better advice if she understood programming, she took the Scrum Developer training—the hardest training she's ever done—just to feel the team's daily reality. Vasco connects it to coaching a team that builds tools for other teams: the role isn't to produce the system, it's to make the other teams' lives easier. Havva's takeaway for every Scrum Master: put your shoes in a different position. Understanding the work from the other person's perspective is what drives team success.   Self-reflection Question: How do you measure your own success as a Scrum Master—and when did you last experience your team's work from their perspective?   [The Scrum Master Toolbox Podcast Recommends]

Evan Lawrence, singer of Johnny Baseball, joins Parking Lot Hands for an expansive conversation about Salt Lake City and Ogden hardcore, melodic punk, songwriting, scene history, and the future of one of Utah's most exciting hardcore-rooted pop-punk bands.Evan begins with his introduction to live music: seeing The Acacia Strain and Impending Doom, discovering local hardcore through One Clean Life at Mojo's, and watching a new generation of Ogden bands establish itself within the Salt Lake scene. He reflects on learning drums, playing in early metalcore bands, and starting Johnny Baseball with friends in the early 2010s. The side project played early shows with Citizen and Turnover before disappearing as its members left for college, careers, and adult life. Years later, Evan revived the name with a clearer sense of purpose. The conversation explores the difference between a pop-punk band and a pop-punk band that comes from hardcore. Evan discusses New Found Glory, Saves the Day, Lifetime, The Movielife, Title Fight, and Polar Bear Club, along with the ethics and community connecting those bands to hardcore even when their sound crosses genre lines. He explains how Johnny Baseball evolved from melancholic early material into the fast, melodic, riff-heavy band it is today—and learned to balance giant hooks with unmistakable hardcore DNA.Evan opens up about his creative process, from improvising melodies as a kid to filling his phone with voice memos whenever inspiration appears. He talks about writing honest, relatable lyrics and using Johnny Baseball as an outlet for frustration, bitterness, humor, and hope. That includes a closer look at “Good Dudes Back Hard,” confronting abuse and harmful behavior within music communities, and why authenticity matters more than adopting the aesthetics of a scene. The episode gets inside Johnny Baseball's recording process and the influence of drummer, musician, and Grotto Audio producer Nic Kartchner. Evan explains why intentionality is essential in the studio, whether a band arrives with a finished song or an idea still searching for its defining moments. He shares practical advice for young bands and reflects on the value of honest collaboration with a producer who can capture emotion and personality.Johnny Baseball's live shows are an experience of their own. Evan talks about the band's 2023 return, the humor and spontaneity behind its performances, and its very real budget for hundreds of inflatable baseball bats. He discusses playing mixed bills, creating a space where people can have fun without abandoning substance, and building momentum through consistent releases, touring, and long-term goals. From there, the conversation widens into a celebration of hardcore across generations. Evan makes the case for a youth crew renaissance, more fast punk, more circle pits, and renewed hope alongside hardcore's necessary anger. He recommends Youth of Today, Gorilla Biscuits, New Brigade, Time Heist, The Rival Mob, and Anklebiter, while explaining what the current Salt Lake scene gets right and why a thriving local community should never be taken for granted. There is plenty of deep-cut music talk, too: Snapcase's Progression Through Unlearning, Victory Records mail-order catalogs, early sets from Title Fight and Citizen, and favorite album artwork from Converge, Coalesce, Ink & Dagger, Judge, and Seven Angels Seven Plagues. Evan also looks ahead to Johnny Baseball's next chapter: bigger hooks, a bigger sound, faster songs, heavier hardcore elements, more touring, and a stronger version of everything that already makes the band distinct.Plus, the episode answers the truly important questions: Which Salt Lake bands could Evan front after a hypothetical Thanos snap? Could Johnny Baseball win a local-band baseball tournament? How competitive can Mario Kart become on tour? And if the rulebook does not explicitly prohibit bunting off a tee, is it really cheating?

The other asks, "Can you emotionally recover from Matthew Lillard?"  We start with why The Warriors remains one of the coolest looking films ever made that convinced an entire generation that New York City was populated by approximately 50,000 themed street gangs whose monthly clothing budget rivaled the GDP of a small nation.  At some point, we sidebar the praise and focus on theimportant questions, like who approved the gang uniforms How does Roller Skate Guy explain his career choices to his parents? Did Cyrus really think 2,000 gang members standing three football fields away could hear his motivational TED Talk with zero microphone? We can dig it, Cyrus, we just can't hearyou.  We also derail into increasingly deranged conspiracy theories, concluding that The Warriors, The Crow, and John Carpenter's The Thing all share the same cinematic universe because honestly... prove they don't. Fox survives getting hit by the train, relocates to Antarctica, gets assimilated by an alien organism, Brandon Lee comes back from the dead thanks to a bird, and somehow this makes more sense than a gang whose entire combat strategy revolves around synchronized roller skating. Cinema has peaked. Then we crash headfirst into SLC Punk!, where Josh experiences the cult classic for the first time and discovers that Matthew Lillard apparently wakes up every morning and chooses violence against your emotions. One minute we're laughing at Jason Segel being the most punk character of all, and the next we're staring into the existential void confronting life and death over blasting The Misfits. Ugh. Posers. But since attention spans are fictional, by the end of the episode we also touch on Blockbuster nostalgia, Ecco the Dolphin being psychological warfare disguised as a children's game, Earthworm Jim, Wave Race & Mario Kart 64, Pilotwings, and the trauma of waiting three whole months to rent a video game only to discover it sucked. Those were the days. We planned a Disney trip, then swerved hard and surprised the kids with two nights at the Helios Grand Hotel, the on-site hotel with a dedicated entrance right into Universal Epic Universe. From the moment we saw Celestial Park through those huge lobby windows, we knew this was going to be a different kind of vacation story. We talk first impressions, the reality of check-in, our park-view deluxe room, and why the “smart” controls felt cool in theory but clunky in practice. Then we get to the big swing: a private Universal VIP tour for our one full day inside Epic Universe. We break down what the tour includes, how having a guide changes your entire theme park strategy, and why the Florida heat turned “let's do everything” into a real stamina test. We also do the math on posted wait times and share the headline number: 615 minutes of lines avoided, plus expedited meals and constant water runs that kept us moving. Portal by portal, we share the honest highs and the sharp edges: Super Nintendo World's sensory overload and Mario Kart augmented reality, Donkey Kong Mine-Cart Madness and its track-jump illusion, Isle of Berk's Toothless moments and Hiccup's Wing Gliders joy, Dark Universe's monsters and jaw-dropping animatronics, and the Wizarding World's 1920s Paris leading to an unforgettable Ministry of Magic reveal. We also talk coaster intensity on Stardust Racers, accessibility and moving-platform loading concerns, and what we'd do differently next time. If you're planning a Universal Orlando vacation, deciding between Express Pass and VIP, or just curious whether Epic Universe is worth the hype, hit play, then subscribe, share the episode with a theme park friend, and leave us a quick rating and review.----Adventures & Mousecapades is a passion project from Alicea & Nathan Novak - two Seattleites addicted to The Mouse. Some point guards score points. Others completely control the game. Zoe Williams is already showing she has the rare ability to do both. In this episode of SportsLifeTalk's You Got Next, we sit down with one of the fastest-rising names in girls basketball, high school basketball recruiting, and the future of women's basketball. As a member of the Class of 2029, Zoe is proving she belongs on the biggest stages, competing against older players with the poise, confidence, and leadership of a seasoned veteran.Representing Marietta High School in Georgia and Team Elite Hubbard on the Adidas 3SSB circuit, Zoe has quickly become one of the nation's most exciting young point guards. Despite being only a freshman, she earned a starting role on a talented 17U roster, consistently matching up against older competition with confidence beyond her years. Throughout this conversation, Zoe shares how basketball became part of her life long before recruiting rankings and scholarship offers. Working in the garage with her father helped build the ball handling, shooting, footwork, and discipline that now define her game. It's proof that greatness isn't built overnight—it's earned through consistent work.Zoe also explains what it truly means to be a point guard. She's focused on controlling the pace, attacking the paint, creating opportunities for teammates, and making the right decisions every possession. Her basketball IQ, patience, and leadership continue to separate her from many players in her class. One of the biggest takeaways from this episode is her mindset. Playing on a nationally recognized 17U team could intimidate most freshmen, but Zoe believes preparation removes fear. If you've put in the work, there's no reason to be nervous. Away from basketball, listeners get to know the person behind the player. Zoe shares her love for music, Mario Kart, pickleball, Spider-Man, and spending time with family and friends. She also discusses maintaining a 4.3 GPA, her interest in biology, and why academics will always be just as important as basketball when choosing a college.Family has played a huge role in Zoe's journey. She credits her parents, siblings, and coaches for helping shape her work ethic, confidence, and humility. Their support continues to fuel her growth both on and off the court. As one of Georgia's brightest young prospects, Zoe has already established herself as a player college coaches and basketball fans should know. Her combination of speed, leadership, composure, basketball intelligence, and relentless competitiveness makes her one of the most intriguing guards in the Class of 2029.This episode is packed with valuable lessons for athletes, parents, coaches, and anyone who loves watching the next generation of women's basketball stars develop. Zoe's story is a reminder that success is built through preparation, discipline, consistency, and believing in yourself long before everyone else does.At SportsLifeTalk Media, our mission is to amplify the voices of the athletes, coaches, and leaders shaping the future of girls' and women's basketball. Through You Got Next, we're proud to introduce audiences to tomorrow's stars while giving them a platform to share the stories behind their success. If you enjoy conversations like this, consider supporting our 4 Quarters Program. featured Wiki of the Day

fWotD Episode 3339: Donkey Kong Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Friday, 26 June 2026, is Donkey Kong.Donkey Kong is a video game series and media franchise created by the Japanese game designer Shigeru Miyamoto for Nintendo. It follows the adventures of Donkey Kong, a large, powerful gorilla, and other members of the Kong family of simians. Donkey Kong games include the original arcade game trilogy by Nintendo R&D1; the Donkey Kong Country series by Rare and Retro Studios; and the Mario vs. Donkey Kong series by Nintendo Software Technology. Various studios have developed spin-offs in genres such as edutainment, puzzle, racing, and rhythm. The franchise also incorporates animation, printed media, theme parks, and merchandise.Miyamoto designed the original 1981 Donkey Kong to repurpose unsold arcade cabinets following the failure of Radar Scope (1980). It was a major success and was followed by the sequels Donkey Kong Jr. (1982) and Donkey Kong 3 (1983). Nintendo placed the franchise on a hiatus as it shifted focus to the spin-off Mario franchise. Rare's 1994 reboot, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) game Donkey Kong Country, reestablished Donkey Kong as a major Nintendo franchise. Rare developed Donkey Kong games for the SNES, Game Boy, and Nintendo 64 until it was acquired by Microsoft in 2002; subsequent games were developed by Nintendo, Retro Studios, Namco and Paon. After Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (2014), the franchise went on another hiatus until Donkey Kong Bananza (2025).The main Donkey Kong games are platform games in which the player must reach the end of a level. Donkey Kong appears as the antagonist or protagonist; his role alternates between games. The original games featured a small cast of characters, including Donkey Kong, Mario, and Pauline. Rare's games expanded the cast with friendly Kongs alongside the Kremlings, an army of antagonistic crocodiles led by Donkey Kong's nemesis King K. Rool. Mario, the protagonist of the 1981 game, became Nintendo's mascot and the star of the Mario franchise, and Donkey Kong characters appear in Mario games such as Mario Kart, Mario Party, and Mario Tennis. Donkey Kong characters also feature in crossover games such as Mario & Sonic and Super Smash Bros.Outside of video games, the franchise includes the animated series Donkey Kong Country (1996–2000), a themed area in Super Nintendo World at Universal's theme parks, soundtrack albums, and Lego construction toys. Donkey Kong is one of Nintendo's bestselling franchises, with more than 65 million copies sold by 2021. The original game was Nintendo's first major international success; it rescued Nintendo of America from a financial crisis, and established it as a prominent force in the video game industry. The franchise has pioneered or popularized concepts such as in-game storytelling and pre-rendered graphics, inspired other games (including clones), and influenced popular culture. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:16 UTC on Friday, 26 June 2026.For the full current version of the article, see Donkey Kong on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Bluesky at @wikioftheday.com.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Aditi.

What happens when a strain smells like a bag of candy, smokes smooth over a year after packaging, and somehow leaves a minty little surprise on the finish? This week we're breaking down LA Pop Rocks, a flavorful indica-leaning strain that caught us off guard with its balance. It delivers sweet fruit-forward aromas, a surprisingly smooth smoke, and effects that feel social, relaxing, and uplifting without immediately gluing you to the couch.  We dig into the genetics, terpene profile, flavor notes, and why this one became an easy recommendation for daytime or evening use if you're looking for relaxation without feeling completely checked out. We also wander into road trip philosophy, dating events, Mario Kart drinking games, and the strange ways cannabis tends to make conversations go places you never expected.  Breaking down LA Pop Rocks and our first impressionsSweet candy, fruit, cheese, and mint flavor notesWhy this flower stayed sticky and fresh long after packagingGenetics: Triangle Kush Bx2 × Z AnimalTerpenes: Beta-Caryophyllene, Limonene, and HumuleneEffects: Euphoric, uplifting, social, and relaxingWhy Brandon keeps reaching for heavier indicas latelyCannabis vs alcohol in social settingsRoad trips as the ultimate compatibility testThe dating event idea we'd actually like to see happenStrain: LA Pop RocksGenetics: Triangle Kush Bx2 × Z Animal Dominant Terpenes:Beta-CaryophylleneLimoneneHumulene  Reported Effects:EuphoriaRelaxationIncreased sociabilityUplifted moodMinimal couch lock  Flavor Notes:Sweet candyFruityLight cheese funkMinty finish  LA Pop Rocks is a good reminder that “indica” doesn't always mean sleepy. Photo by Nick Fewings on Unsplash Published 15 Jun 2026 It’s an all-Brits episode, as Andy welcomes Ian “epredator” Hughes back to the show as co-host, while both Michaels are away. We take a dive into some recent and current triple-A games as Ian talks through many hours of playtime in Crimson Desert, Forza Horizon 6, and 007 First Light. Although the new open-world Forza Horizon is set in Japan, Andy and Ian enjoy noting that these are games from UK-based studios or with British elements (like the legendary James Bond). Along the way, they talk about a WWDC video shared by Michael Rowe, which brings foveated streaming to the Vision Pro headset, although Ian notes that Varjo has been in this space for several years already. There’s a second round of gaming conversations that includes the latest XBox Games Showcase, featuring an older game (Sea of Thieves) from another British studio, and a yet-to-be-released game (Fable) with British voice talent and acting, that was also originally from the UK. There’s also a quick nod to an easter egg in the latest LEGO Batman game. The episode wraps up with a discussion of the recently fully-funded Kickstarter for the Virtual Worlds Museum, that we last talked about in episode 555. Ian mentions some of the recent video content that has been released by the project. Many thanks to Ian for joining the show this week, bringing a deep focus on games and virtual worlds! We venture forth to the nerd cave this week to discuss Smile (2022) and Smile 2 (2024), both directed by Parker Finn, and what begins as a serious conversation about trauma, grief, and psychological horror immediately mutates into a 90-minute brainstorming session about how challenging the Smile Demon to a Mario Kart battle in space somehow makes sense? Look, if Leprechaun and Hellraiser can go to space, then this Demon-thing can, too.As we dive deep into Parker Finn's increasingly cursed universe of hallucinations and nightmare logic, we also break down why Smile worked so well as a psychological horror film, and how Smile 2 somehow managed to crank every dial into the red like a caffeinated psychopath that says, “What if we made everything worse?”Naturally, the convo asks the obvious questions such as:Is the Smile Demon secretly living its best life? Would the franchise improve if future sequels took place in Victorian England? Would Smile 9: Smile Harder feature Joker gas? Could Kyle Gallner have defeated the curse by challenging it to Mario Kart in low Earth orbit? The answer to at least one of these questions is apparently yes.We also celebrate everything that makes the franchise work:The relentless rug-pull hallucinations The terrifying "wait... is that person real? momentsThe increasingly horrifying mythology The monster design that somehow consists mostly of teeth and yet still makes everyone want to leave the room immediately By the end of the episode, we ultimately conclude that if you ever find yourself haunted by an ancient smiling nightmare creature, skip the therapy session, skip the drug dealer, skip the exposition, and immediately launch yourself into space.Checkmate, demon.CREEP-O-RAMA is: Store: CREEP-O-RAMAYouTube: @creep-o-ramaJosh: @joshblevesqueArtwork: @bargainbinblasphemyTheme: @imfigureAudio: @stranjlove

In this conversation, she and Dr. Gray unpack the premed rat race—the pressure to pack 15 activities, the guilt of cutting hobbies, and the lie that every minute not studying sets you back. Vanessa candidly shares applying twice, including a COVID-canceled MCAT that delayed her first cycle, the external nudge to pause, and the growth and humility that made her ultimately ready to be accepted. She explains how interviews gravitated to her writing, why her second personal statement focused on who she is rather than everything she did, and how she now balances med school with novel deadlines—treating writing as both catharsis and a job, while preparing for Step 2. Along the way: apocalypse-proof humor, a reframe of rest as part of training, and a clear message to premeds and medical students alike—keep the passions that make you human. Because people, not checklists, become doctors. What You'll Learn:- How campus EMT and suicide hotline roles shaped a patient-first “why medicine”- What changed between a late, COVID-impacted first cycle and a successful reapplication- Why focusing your personal statement on who you are can resonate more than listing activities- Practical ways to protect hobbies in premed and med school without burning out- How interviews may lean into your authentic passions—even more than your hours
