Chris specialized in helping clubs and landowners improve their deer herds and hunting experiences. They discuss how the scientific management of black bears now requires the addition of hunting as a tool to take the next step in conserving the resource. It's a frank conversation about how things were, how they are now, and what needs to happen for the state to manage its rapidly growing bear population. Many of us have tried to age deer the old-fashioned way using jawbones, and some believe we can judge a buck's age on the hoof. But once they get past five or six years old, it becomes difficult to know for sure. These really old deer can be especially challenging. Recently, some teenage does have been harvested, and there's only one way to know their true age. This week we're  joined by Garrett Clevinger of the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency to tell us about their successful elk restoration project. It's an example of conservation, cooperation and hard work. Garrett tells the story of how they identified a region that was ideal habitat, worked with other agencies to acquire some breeding stock to release and how it's grown into a population that's now allowing limited hunts. We learn of the ongoing research that his group is conducting with elk calves plus he explains how to  apply for chance to hunt. It's a great conservation story. As a former taxidermist and wildlife sculptor, Brian has a keen eye for detail—and he's applied that precision to studying the internal placement of vital organs in relation to the angles from which hunters take their shots. This week, we're joined by Claude Strother of Wilcox County, Alabama—a seasoned turkey hunter who was recently attacked by a bobcat during a hunt. The story itself is fascinating, but there is much more to the man than that incident. He is a serious turkey hunter who has kept records of the 247 turkeys he has killed and the more than 70 he has called up for others. We thoroughly discuss the benefits and techniques of sprayer calibration and the nuances of spraying effectively. There are so many benefits to spraying but so many confusing questions. We ask about calibrating the sprayer, boomless vs. booms, how to mix, cleaning the tank, water pH, speed of spraying, gallons per acre and per minute, safety, when to spray and much more. This week we have William Lester from the Mississippi Delta here to explain his Trumpet turkey calls, and how to play this unique call that's just a bit different from a traditional Turpin-style trumpet. William is a seasoned, mixed-media artist who aside from trumpets is also known for his watercolor paintings and block prints of mostly turkeys and waterfowl backed by a Mississippi landscape, hand-made dove and duck decoys, and has many great stories to tell from past and present. Most importantly, he helps us understand the “craze” around trumpets. It's an interesting discussion. This week we learn more about hunting predators with calling expert Jon Collins of FOXPRO. As Gamekeepers we're interested in controlling many of our predators and nest scavengers, and Jon shows us a way to have an exciting hunt during the process. He explains the best times, the best calls, equipment and set ups. He also goes into details about using lights at night. This week is a very special episode. We have Mr. Fred Pringle, an 85-year-old southern gentleman who was a 49-year employee of the Alabama Department of Conservation and the man possibly most responsible for restoring turkeys all over the state in the 60s and 70s. Mr. Fred will explain how he trapped and released almost 4,000 turkeys during his career. He explains how he did it and what he learned about turkeys during this process. We also learn a lot about the legendary hunting camp Choctaw Bluff and how it helped influence turkey hunting and set an example for wildlife conservation.  It's a great one and one any turkey hunter will enjoy listening to. We decided to ask him questions that he rarely gets asked in an effort to learn something new. How does he prepare for weeks of reduced sleep? He explains his filming set up to help listeners film their own hunts, we talk woodsmanship skills and how they paint a picture of what's occurring, how he keeps up with the many different turkeys he is aware of, how environmental factors affect the sound of a gobble, how he anticipates what's going to happen—allowing him to prepare—and how there is something therapeutic about the spring woods.
