He was responsible for areas that already had a high population when he started and also areas with hardly any deer. We ask a lot of questions and hear some great info and stories. This week, we're joined by George Warthen and Morgan Richardson of the Florida Wildlife Commission. They discuss how the scientific management of black bears now requires the addition of hunting as a tool to take the next step in conserving the resource. It's a frank conversation about how things were, how they are now, and what needs to happen for the state to manage its rapidly growing bear population. With a vote approaching, these gentlemen explain the need to reinstate hunting as a management strategy. It's a fascinating discussion and a great example of an agency relying on sound science and trained biologists to support their state's wildlife. Listen, Learn and Enjoy. On this episode we are joined by Sarah Parvin and we get to meet her dad, Dr. Dennis Olive, to get an update on the progress of the Slab Lab. We learned a lot more on this episode about the history of the pond and how they had grown largemouth bass in the fourteen pound range before deciding to commit to Coppernose Bluegills. That's right, fourteen pounds! Dennis explained he added 100,000 pounds of shiners to the pond every year to get the bass weights up. Sarah brings us back to Bluegills and up to speed on the recent winter stress issues and the problems last summer's lack of rain caused. It's an interesting discussion. Listen, Learn and Enjoy. This week we are joined by Arthur Stephens and Carolyn Nistler of Matson Lab in Montana. Many of us have tried to age deer the old-fashioned way using jawbones, and some believe we can judge a buck's age on the hoof. But once they get past five or six years old, it becomes difficult to know for sure. These really old deer can be especially challenging. Recently, some teenage does have been harvested, and there's only one way to know their true age. When you really want to be certain, there's a proven scientific technique called cementum aging that is remarkably accurate. We get the lowdown. It's an example of conservation, cooperation and hard work. Garrett tells the story of how they identified a region that was ideal habitat, worked with other agencies to acquire some breeding stock to release and how it's grown into a population that's now allowing limited hunts. This week, we get down in the weeds with Brian Johnson, a.k.a. @anatomyhunter, to better understand why we sometimes lose whitetails after what seems like a perfect shot. There's a lot at play here, and Brian is on a mission to help hunters gain deeper insight. As a former taxidermist and wildlife sculptor, Brian has a keen eye for detail—and he's applied that precision to studying the internal placement of vital organs in relation to the angles from which hunters take their shots. We learned a ton. Brian dives into topics like the infamous “no-man's-land,” lack of a blood trail, and whether a deer can survive on one lung? Which side of the deer offers the best angle at the liver? Many animals are lost each season, and Brian's life mission is to help hunters recover more of them. It's a fascinating discussion. This week, we're joined by Claude Strother of Wilcox County, Alabama—a seasoned turkey hunter who was recently attacked by a bobcat during a hunt. The story itself is fascinating, but there is much more to the man than that incident. He is a serious turkey hunter who has kept records of the 247 turkeys he has killed and the more than 70 he has called up for others. He has witnessed the wild turkey population grow from very few to where it is today. We ask him a lot of questions, but it's about more than just the scary bobcat attack. This week, we are joined by a team of snow goose experts to help explain the changes occurring in the mid-continental snow goose population. Not too long ago, their numbers exploded—but now, they are trending in a troubling direction. Waterfowl biologists in the U.S. and Canada are working hard to understand what's happening. It's a problem not many people know about. Many of us, as hunters, are aware of the extended seasons aimed at reducing numbers—and the thrill of having thousands of geese spiral around, looking to land. It's a hunter's dream. But what does the future hold? Our guest experts—Dr. Mitch Weegman, Frank Baldwin, and Josh Dooley—explain what they know.Listen, learn, and enjoy.Send a text message to the show!Support the showStay connected with GameKeepers: Instagram: @mossyoakgamekeepers Facebook: @GameKeepers Twitter: @MOGameKeepers YouTube: @MossyOakGameKeepers Website: https://mossyoakgamekeeper.com/ Enter The Gamekeeper Giveaway: https://bit.ly/GK_Giveaway Subscribe to Gamekeepers Magazine: https://bit.ly/GK_Magazine Buy a Single Issue of Gamekeepers Magazine: https://bit.ly/GK_Single_Issue Join our Newsletters: Field Notes - https://bit.ly/GKField_Notes | The Branch - https://bit.ly/the_branch Have a question for us or a podcast idea? This week we're joined by Dr. Brad Cohen of Tennessee Tech and the Cohen Lab. We discuss hunting pressure, gobbling activity and what they have learned through research and monitoring GPS banded gobblers and hunters. Brad participates in many research projects along with Drs. Mike Chamberlain and Bret Collier, and like them, he's an avid turkey hunter and has really paid attention to the findings. We also talk turkey season dates and the thoughts so far on their effectiveness. Ever wondered how they count birds and establish limits? We touch on that. We also talk about avian predators having an effect on our turkeys. We think it's a real thing. It's an interesting discussion and one anyone interested in turkeys will appreciate. This week, we're joined by KJ Britt—NFL football player and lifelong, obsessed rabbit hunter. It's a refreshing change of pace as we hear how KJ, his father, and grandfather enjoy spending time together chasing rabbits and running dogs. It's three generations of rabbit hunting heritage, and KJ doesn't take it for granted. With around thirty beagles and a strong desire to hunt every chance they get, their passion is clear. We ask plenty of questions about hunt strategies, jump dogs, lingo, and whether a property managed for deer also makes great habitat for rabbits. We also touch on the fact that fewer people chase rabbits than in the past—and how they're missing out on a lot of excitement. It's a fun one. On this episode we are joined by Osceola Outdoors owner Mike Tussey. The Osceola wild turkey has a powerful magnetic draw for many turkey hunters. Whether its chasing the Grand Slam, enjoying the unique terrain the birds inhabit or getting your turkey season started as early as possible, the Osceola is highly regarded. Mike has been guiding hunts since 2000, and when we spoke a few weeks ago his clients were 39 for 39. That's an impressive record! Things are changing rapidly in Florida and unless you know a landowner or draw a public land tag, an outfitter might be the best option. Just what are all changes he has seen past and present? This week we are joined by one of our favorite guests, Dave Owens of the Pinhoti Project. Dave is a renowned traveling turkey hunter who obsesses over the details and is one of our favorite guests. We decided to ask him questions that he rarely gets asked in an effort to learn something new. How does he prepare for weeks of reduced sleep? He explains his filming set up to help listeners film their own hunts, we talk woodsmanship skills and how they paint a picture of what's occurring, how he keeps up with the many different turkeys he is aware of, how environmental factors affect the sound of a gobble, how he anticipates what's going to happen—allowing him to prepare—and how there is something therapeutic about the spring woods. It's a good one. Listen, Learn and Enjoy. This week we are joined in studio by two turkey calling contest crazed individuals, Lann Wilf and Jason Conrad. They both have won numerous prestigious friction contests, including the World Amateur and the Grand National Friction, which were huge milestones for them. We learn all about the contests, including the drama around qualifying, strategies, and comradery amongst the competitors. They tell some great stories about legendary callers and hunting. At the end they give us a demonstration of their abilities that is nothing short of impressive. Grab your box calls and sand your slates! Listen, Learn and Enjoy.
