This week we are joined by Arthur Stephens and Carolyn Nistler of Matson Lab in Montana. Many of us have tried to age deer the old-fashioned way using jawbones, and some believe we can judge a buck's age on the hoof. But once they get past five or six years old, it becomes difficult to know for sure. These really old deer can be especially challenging. Recently, some teenage does have been harvested, and there's only one way to know their true age. When you really want to be certain, there's a proven scientific technique called cementum aging that is remarkably accurate. We get the lowdown. This week we're joined by our favorite Gamekeeper, Jeff Foxworthy. This one is pure fun as we hear the engaging story of Jeff getting bitten by a copperhead—and the chaos that followed. You'll be surprised at what a snakebite can cost. He also shares several more funny stories, and we talk tractors, grandkids, deer browse, artifacts, and more. This week we're joined by Garrett Clevinger of the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency to tell us about their successful elk restoration project. It's an example of conservation, cooperation and hard work. Garrett tells the story of how they identified a region that was ideal habitat, worked with other agencies to acquire some breeding stock to release and how it's grown into a population that's now allowing limited hunts. We learn of the ongoing research that his group is conducting with elk calves plus he explains how to apply for chance to hunt. It's a great conservation story. This week, we get down in the weeds with Brian Johnson, a.k.a. @anatomyhunter, to better understand why we sometimes lose whitetails after what seems like a perfect shot. There's a lot at play here, and Brian is on a mission to help hunters gain deeper insight. As a former taxidermist and wildlife sculptor, Brian has a keen eye for detail—and he's applied that precision to studying the internal placement of vital organs in relation to the angles from which hunters take their shots. We learned a ton. Brian dives into topics like the infamous “no-man's-land,” lack of a blood trail, and whether a deer can survive on one lung? Which side of the deer offers the best angle at the liver? Many animals are lost each season, and Brian's life mission is to help hunters recover more of them. It's a fascinating discussion. This week, we're joined by Claude Strother of Wilcox County, Alabama—a seasoned turkey hunter who was recently attacked by a bobcat during a hunt. The story itself is fascinating, but there is much more to the man than that incident. He is a serious turkey hunter who has kept records of the 247 turkeys he has killed and the more than 70 he has called up for others. He has witnessed the wild turkey population grow from very few to where it is today. We ask him a lot of questions, but it's about more than just the scary bobcat attack. In the end, it's about a man staring into an uncertain future and holding on dearly to what he loves most. Listen, learn, and enjoy.Send a text message to the show! This week, we are joined by a team of snow goose experts to help explain the changes occurring in the mid-continental snow goose population. Not too long ago, their numbers exploded—but now, they are trending in a troubling direction. Waterfowl biologists in the U.S. and Canada are working hard to understand what's happening. It's a problem not many people know about. Many of us, as hunters, are aware of the extended seasons aimed at reducing numbers—and the thrill of having thousands of geese spiral around, looking to land. It's a hunter's dream. We discuss hunting pressure, gobbling activity and what they have learned through research and monitoring GPS banded gobblers and hunters. Brad participates in many research projects along with Drs. Mike Chamberlain and Bret Collier, and like them, he's an avid turkey hunter and has really paid attention to the findings. We also talk turkey season dates and the thoughts so far on their effectiveness. Ever wondered how they count birds and establish limits? We touch on that. This week, we're joined by KJ Britt—NFL football player and lifelong, obsessed rabbit hunter. It's a refreshing change of pace as we hear how KJ, his father, and grandfather enjoy spending time together chasing rabbits and running dogs. It's three generations of rabbit hunting heritage, and KJ doesn't take it for granted. With around thirty beagles and a strong desire to hunt every chance they get, their passion is clear. We ask plenty of questions about hunt strategies, jump dogs, lingo, and whether a property managed for deer also makes great habitat for rabbits. We learn they are a fascinating animal, very much deserving of our respect even though we still seem to want to trap or shoot each one we see. They weren't always in the Eastern half of the U.S., yet have you ever wondered how they got here? Why do they howl? Just how smart are they? If you trap one how long does it take another to fill the void? How large are their territories? This week we have Dan Moultrie and Mark Olis in the studio for a deep discussion around the many effects of the drought. Across much of the whitetail's range, plots struggled to get established and the all-important mast crop is spotty at best. In some areas, it's nonexistent and Dudley explains why. It's all very concerning. Have you ever thought of irrigating a plot or two? We take a deep dive into how that could be done with Dan. We also talk about post-rut buck mortality and the timing of the rut. It's one of the best discussions we've ever had. If you manage a property or dream about it, you'll want to pay attention. Listen, Learn and Enjoy.
