On this show we're joined by Chris Cook who was a 30 year employee with the State of Alabama focused on managing white-tailed deer. Chris specialized in helping clubs and landowners improve their deer herds and hunting experiences. He was responsible for areas that already had a high population when he started and also areas with hardly any deer. We ask a lot of questions and hear some great info and stories. What do you think was the heaviest deer he saw weighed? How far do you think a trapped and relocated buck would travel after he was released? If you enjoy talking deer you'll enjoy this one. This week, we're joined by George Warthen and Morgan Richardson of the Florida Wildlife Commission. They discuss how the scientific management of black bears now requires the addition of hunting as a tool to take the next step in conserving the resource. It's a frank conversation about how things were, how they are now, and what needs to happen for the state to manage its rapidly growing bear population. With a vote approaching, these gentlemen explain the need to reinstate hunting as a management strategy. It's a fascinating discussion and a great example of an agency relying on sound science and trained biologists to support their state's wildlife. Listen, Learn and Enjoy. On this episode we are joined by Sarah Parvin and we get to meet her dad, Dr. Dennis Olive, to get an update on the progress of the Slab Lab. We learned a lot more on this episode about the history of the pond and how they had grown largemouth bass in the fourteen pound range before deciding to commit to Coppernose Bluegills. That's right, fourteen pounds! Dennis explained he added 100,000 pounds of shiners to the pond every year to get the bass weights up. This week we are joined by Arthur Stephens and Carolyn Nistler of Matson Lab in Montana. Many of us have tried to age deer the old-fashioned way using jawbones, and some believe we can judge a buck's age on the hoof. But once they get past five or six years old, it becomes difficult to know for sure. These really old deer can be especially challenging. Recently, some teenage does have been harvested, and there's only one way to know their true age. When you really want to be certain, there's a proven scientific technique called cementum aging that is remarkably accurate. We get the lowdown. This week, we get down in the weeds with Brian Johnson, a.k.a. @anatomyhunter, to better understand why we sometimes lose whitetails after what seems like a perfect shot. There's a lot at play here, and Brian is on a mission to help hunters gain deeper insight. As a former taxidermist and wildlife sculptor, Brian has a keen eye for detail—and he's applied that precision to studying the internal placement of vital organs in relation to the angles from which hunters take their shots. We learned a ton. Brian dives into topics like the infamous “no-man's-land,” lack of a blood trail, and whether a deer can survive on one lung? Which side of the deer offers the best angle at the liver? Many animals are lost each season, and Brian's life mission is to help hunters recover more of them. It's a fascinating discussion. This week, we're joined by Claude Strother of Wilcox County, Alabama—a seasoned turkey hunter who was recently attacked by a bobcat during a hunt. The story itself is fascinating, but there is much more to the man than that incident. He is a serious turkey hunter who has kept records of the 247 turkeys he has killed and the more than 70 he has called up for others. He has witnessed the wild turkey population grow from very few to where it is today. We ask him a lot of questions, but it's about more than just the scary bobcat attack.
