Please join us for “The Journey Towards Neuroscience-Aligned Education” with Katie Pagnotta, Ellen Surprenant, and Sam Chadwick.Katie Pagnotta is a licensed clinical mental health counselor, functional success educational consultant, parent coach, and author. She is also the creator of the Brain- and Body-Aligned Responsive Systems (BBARS) of Excellence framework. She guides educators, administrators, and school staff in strengths-based approaches that leverage the human design and empower the development of the necessary mindsets and habits that lead to re-envisioned success; success the achieves goals by rooting in wellness.Katie authored Empowered by the Human Design: Utilizing the BBARS of Excellence Framework to Foster Student and Educator Success, a book that includes interview segments from 18 experts within the fields of education, psychology, and neuroscience. The book is a work of collective wisdom grounded in Polyvagal Theory and synthesized in a user-friendly way to facilitate practical application for educators. Its reviewers have called it “a powerful and practical new model for regulation and resilience,” “required reading for all educators,” “a gift to the field,” and “a game-changer.” Throughout the book, Katie combines the wisdom of her interviewees with her own research as well as her years of experience as a former K-12 NH public school counselor.Katie utilizes her book and framework as tools to support schools in their journey of moving towards neuroscience-aligned education. She is passionate about providing professional development opportunities that support the whole school community in order to help educators and students thrive!Sam Chadwick has been working as an educator for five years, four of which have been at Somerset Elementary School. Even before graduating and starting her professional career she always had a passion for working with kids and did so as a tutor, nanny, and in the PreK/daycare setting. After working with, and learning about students with exceptionalities and students with trauma, she decided to get her masters degree in Trauma-Informed education to better her practice and approach to support all students. Sam runs her classroom with one main mantra for herself, the other adults in the room, and her students; "Be a good human." Sam believes it's important to remember everyone in the classroom has different needs to be successful and assists students in meeting their needs in ways that aren't hurting someone else's path to learning. She works to create a welcoming and encouraging environment where all adults and students can be successful using routine, setting and achieving goals, and using regulation as a path for connection. In her 30 years as an educator, Ellen Surprenant has been privileged to learn alongside students, educators, and families, in a variety of public elementary school settings. She has worked as a PK teacher, a classroom teacher, literacy specialist, a special education teacher, and an Assistant Director of Special Services. Currently, Ellen is the building administrator at Somerset Elementary School in Hartland, Maine. Her mission is to use a neuroscience and strengths-based approach to grow and support a team that views behavior through a regulation lens; understanding actions as a response to the body's internal state, particularly the nervous system, rather than as intentional or willful choices. The ultimate aim of this approach is to foster a community of safety, creativity, curiosity, and kindness leading to improved job satisfaction and retention for educators and joyful, engaged learning for students.Support the show

How do relationships, opportunities, and invitations encourage young people to remain in the church and consider church work? Rev. Seth Flick, pastor of Divine Redeemer Lutheran Church in Hartland, WI , joins Andy and Sarah for our Set Apart to Serve Series to talk about his formation as a pastor and who encouraged him in this pursuit, his congregation's emphasis on their duty to raise up future church workers, how they use relationships, opportunities, and invitations to encourage children in the faith, and the roles of other church workers and parents in their approach. Learn more about the Set Apart to Serve Initiative at lcms.org/setaparttoserve. This episode originally aired on March 8, 2024. Christ's church will continue until He returns, and that church will continue to need church workers. Set Apart to Serve (SAS) is an initiative of the LCMS to recruit church workers. Together, we pray for workers for the Kingdom of God and encourage children to consider church work vocations. Here are three easy ways you can participate in SAS: 1. Pray with your children for God to provide church workers. 2. Talk to your children about becoming church workers. 3. Thank God for the people who work in your congregation. “One of the things that we're seeing is that there are far more buyers in the market than there are sellers,” says Hartland Ross, an M&A advisor, digital marketing strategist and founder and president of eBridge Marketing Solutions, a digital marketing agency and M&A advisory firm founded in 2001 catering to IT service firms providing opportunities for growth through acquisition and & organic marketing strategies. “It becomes a competitive situation to try to secure an opportunity. “For those who are saying, hey, I've got this great idea. I'm going to grow my business through acquisition. I'm going to roll up some MSPs. They hear that, geez, if I do that, the values will increase. It all sounds great, except for the fact that everybody's got the same idea. So, how do you differentiate yourself as a buyer relative to all the other buyers that a seller has to evaluate? We heard just the other day through some partners of ours that they had, get this, 400 NDAs on one deal. I mean, it's just astounding to think that your chances of getting a deal in those instances are so low.” This podcast will explore the complexities of buying an IT company or MSP, providing invaluable insights for anyone considering the purchase of an MSP or IT services organization. Attendees can expect this session to cover: The importance of building trust from the start Key due diligence elements unique to MSPs How to quickly qualify for opportunities How to achieve alignment of objectives, valuation, and deal terms How to avoid deal fatigue and navigate to a successful close Less well-known pitfalls to avoid and opportunities to explore during an acquisition Hartland Ross is an M&A advisor, digital marketing strategist, and founder and president of eBridge Marketing Solutions – a digital marketing agency and M&A advisory firm founded in 2001 catering to IT service firms providing opportunities for growth through acquisition and & organic marketing strategies. Thanksgiving dinner is delicious, but cooking for a crowd can be stressful. What time do you put in the turkey? How do you make a flaky pie crust that'll finally impress your grandma? And how do you get those blasted lumps out of the mashed potatoes?!Thankfully, Gesine Bullock-Prado has the answers. She runs a baking school in the Upper Valley called the Sugar Glider Kitchen, and hosts “Baked in Vermont” on the Food Network. She's also a New York Times bestselling cookbook author — her latest is called "My Vermont Table: Recipes for All Six Seasons."Here are three kitchen tips from Vermont Edition's Thanksgiving cooking show, which also featured Hartland baker Susan Reid:Tip #1: Your turkey doesn't need to be in the oven all dayMany of us are probably overcooking our turkeys, leading to dried-out meat and soggy skin. Bullock-Prado cooks her bird on high heat to ensure the skin gets extra crispy. She also seasons it well with a dry brine — an overcooked, under-salted turkey is an all-too-common Thanksgiving crime.Rather than following the cooking time on the Butterball wrapper, use a meat thermometer to know when your turkey's done. Poke your bird in the thickest part of the thigh without touching the bone. Once it's out of the oven, let it sit for a while so it can finish cooking and soak in all those good juices.Tip #2: Make your pumpkin pie aheadBullock-Prado and Reid agree: Making your pumpkin pie filling early will make the flavors really pop. You can also make your pie…

Discover Lafayette's sound engineer, Jason Sikora, has a voice many of you are familiar with, as he's participated in our interviews over the past seven years, ensuring a finely-tuned, professional podcast. Jason Sikora pictured with Butch Roussel during a recording of Discover Lafayette Podcast. But many of you may not know his interesting back story, or how he came to live and work in Lafayette LA. A native of Detroit, Michigan and graduate of the Musicians Institute in Hollywood, Jason has a rich collection of memories to share and insights into how rock concerts are orchestrated. Jason's dad worked for Ford Motor Company in Detroit, but when Jason and his two brothers were young, the family moved to Hartland, Michigan to be able to escape the city life and its accompanying declining socio-economic factors in the 1980s. Describing Hartland as "basically a truck stop," it was much more. Jason graduated from Hartland High School, playing drums in its marching band and eventually serving as the Hartland Eagles' mascot. Sadly, Jason's younger brother, Kris, died when he was 11 years old, from a blood disorder. Kris' life and death had great meaning, however, as researchers were able to study his condition. Jason stated that today, people with Kris' condition would survive. Upon graduation from high school, Jason hightailed it to Hollywood, California to attend the Musicians Institute ("MI"), a college that was known as a 'player's school,' meaning that students were taught the skills to make a sustainable career in the music industry. While many young people could qualify to be a guitar tech based upon their self-taught abilities, Jason credited MI for a valuable education and teaching him guitar repair and cable management. " I started playing guitar in 6th grade, so I had six to seven years of experience with signal flow, how to solder microphones back together. I learned a lot in high school with my band, messing with pedals and guitars and amplifiers. I did learn guitar repair, cable management and how to get tone while in college at MI." Andy Brauer hired Jason right after graduation from MI, to work at his shop that specialized in instrument and musical gear rentals. Jason had the good fortune to work with Faith Hill in his very first gig, being hired to work at Skywalker Ranch to assist in recording track sessions. "I got to hang out with the best musicians in the world for a week: Mike Landau, Dean Parks, Paul Bushnell, and Vinnie Calaiuta are monster players!" Jason also got to witness the regular lives of performers such as Faith Hill, her husband, Tim McGraw, and their children, and realized how fortunate he was to be a part of this experience in the ordinary lives of superstars as the album was being cut. Jason then met Michael Lockwood, a guitarist who hired him to be a touring guitar tech for Aimee Mann, performing sound checks and restringing guitars, ensuring that all would go well during concerts. Jason would continue this type of work for several years, working with greats such as Lisa Marie Presley, Britney Spears, and the Goo Goo Dolls, as well as other acts during what he calls his 'lost years from 2004 to 2006', such as Hanson, Gerard McMahon, Puddle of Mudd, and the recording of "A Mighty Wind," an album accompanying a movie of the same name, featuring Christopher Guest, Harry Shearer, Michael McKean, Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara, Jennifer Coolidge and many other staples of comedy culture of the time. "The work ethic is very different when you're on the road. You're not allowed to be sick. The show must go on. If there is a half million dollar guarantee and there are 10,000 people out there, your rig has to work. There was always a doctor out there with water, vitamins, and oxygen. You have to do the show. There's no back-up. No one else would know my rig," says Jason Sikora. Asked if he missed traveling on the road for months as a time as a guitar tech,

Interviewees: Drs. Megan Brown and Jo Hartland Interviewer: Dr. Lisa Meeks Description:  In this episode, podcast co-host Lisa Meeks had the privilege of hearing from Drs. Megan Brown and Jo Harland,  two UK physicians with disabilities, who collaborated on a thought-provoking poem critiquing disability inclusion in the medical field.  In this poem reading, Drs. Brown and Hartland challenge the narrative of "overcoming" and "inspiration porn" often associated with disabled individuals. They emphasize the importance of embracing one's true identity and resisting the pressure to conform to societal expectations. Reminding us that disabled individuals should not have to prove their worth above others and deserve to be valued for who they are. The poem also highlights the ongoing struggle faced by disabled healthcare professionals in securing necessary accommodations in their work environments. It sheds light on the burden placed on individuals to constantly fight for their needs and the importance of organizations recognizing and addressing these challenges.  Listeners will gain deeper insights into the experiences of disabled healthcare professionals and the critical issues surrounding disability inclusion in the medical field.    Bios:  Dr Megan Brown is a Senior Research Associate in Medical Education at Newcastle University, in the School of Medicine, in the UK. She trained as a doctor, but decided to leave practice and has subsequently pursued medical education research. She is multiply disabled – she uses a walking stick, and is neurodivergent. Megan's research has focused on issues relating to the clinical education workforce within the UK, and equality, diversity, and inclusion within this workforce across the spectrum of undergraduate to postgraduate experience. She is a published poet, and is passionate about creative methods of expression and research. Dr Jo Hartland (they/them) qualified from Cardiff University in 2013 and left NHS clinical work in 2018. They have worked at the University of Bristol Medical School since 2018, and are the current School Deputy Education Director for Student Equity Diversity and Inclusion. Their teaching focuses on the integration of marginalised people's voices in healthcare curriculums, and empowering students to be agents of change in the face of health inequity. They sit on the executive board of the UK Medical Schools Council EDI Alliance, with a focus on LGBTQ+ inclusion and reasonable adjustments for disability. Their research interests lie in the intersection of professionalism and how this can act as a gatekeeping device for marginalised communities accessing healthcare careers. Outside of their university work Jo is a queer health activist and lead author of the GLADD UK Charter on So-Called LGBTQ+ ‘Conversion Therapy'. In 2022 they received the NHS England LGBTQ+ Health Advisor Award and Attitude magazine's 2023 Pride Award. How do relationships, opportunities, and invitations encourage young people to remain in the church and consider church work? Rev. Seth Flick, pastor of Divine Redeemer Lutheran Church in Hartland, WI , joins Andy and Sarah for our Set Apart to Serve Series to talk about his formation as a pastor and who encouraged him in this pursuit, his congregation's emphasis on their duty to raise up future church workers, how they use relationships and opportunities and invitations to encourage children in the faith, and the roles of other church workers and parents in their approach.  Learn more about the Set Apart to Serve Initiative at lcms.org/setaparttoserve.
