This is the kind of story bowhunters dream about—but rarely get to finish. For five years, this Illinois whitetail was more than just a deer on camera. From his first appearance as a young buck in 2021, to finding his sheds year after year, to countless close encounters and near misses, “Muley” became a part of the journey. Season after season, he slipped through the cracks. Gun seasons. Nighttime movement. Swirling winds. Missed opportunities. But late-season patterns, patience, and years of history finally brought everything together. This is the full story—trail camera history, shed hunts, late-season strategy, heartbreak, redemption, and the moment every bowhunter works toward but never takes for granted. Not every long-term buck story ends this way. This one did. Bowhunt or Die.

In this episode of First Generation Bowhunter, host Adam Buchanan sits down with Brad Brooks, founder of Argali Outdoors, to talk about the unexpected overlap between rock climbing, bow hunting, and building gear that actually works in the backcountry.Adam and Brad dig into how their shared obsession with climbing shaped their approach to bowhunting, why bow hunting has one of the steepest learning curves in the outdoors, and how persistence—not shortcuts—is the real key to success. They also compare the true cost of climbing vs. hunting, why hunters tend to obsess over gear, and how to avoid wasting money when you're getting started. The conversation goes deep into wild game as a primary food source, from preparation and cooking to why harvesting your own meat changes your relationship with food entirely. Brad also shares insight into how Argali gear is designed, why simplicity matters, and how innovation in hunting apparel and equipment is evolving to better serve serious hunters—not trends. They wrap with a real conversation about balancing family life, work, and hunting, why communication matters, and how learning from failure is unavoidable in both climbing and bowhunting. If you're a bowhunter, endurance athlete, climber, or someone trying to do hunting the right way—this episode hits.Brad is the founder of Argali Outdoors, known for lightweight, no-nonsense hunting gear built for real backcountry use.

Pushing Above Average 3. Diving Into a Deep Hole We explore how adversity can shape us without defining us, why measurables matter when it comes to personal growth, and how confidence is built through consistent effort—not comfort. This conversation challenges listeners to eliminate excuses, examine their routines, and stop living in fear-based “what ifs.” Instead, we ask the better question: What if it works? If you're ready to raise the bar, push past average, and build a life you won't look back on with regret, this episode is for you.

Paul kicks off November in Wyoming with his first whitetail bow hunt of the season, and things get western fast. Between guiding hunters, chasing mule deer and antelope, and coming off an Alaska trip, this is his first real chance to climb into a tree and chase whitetails on public ground. Right away, Paul deals with classic public-land chaos: old stands left behind, other hunters slipping through, swirling winds, and deer that always seem just out of bow range. But persistence pays off!
In this episode of the Deer IQ podcast we wrap up our series on public land hunting details that make the difference, looking at some very practical access strategies. We talk about:• if you should consider the now popular tactic of using a boat for access - and exactly when this works and when it doesn't• the truth about swamp access for finding big bucks• out of state short vs. long trips- the psychology and mindsets that lead to more success• pre-scouting vs. going in blind and hunting - which is better and why• and a major trap most new public land hunters fall into you definitely want to avoid. So If you are new to public land hunting, or struggle with access or dialing in good spots, this is an episode for you. * Deer IQ Advanced Coached Small Group - Sign Up HERE: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSceG8_f0KXE9p2PQ4bhf7E8rb9CWXz0PWmpmBS_narU9HbwHg/viewform • Take the Deer IQ Test 360 HERE: https://deeriq.com/full-assessment/Other DEER IQ Resources:** Season 3 Quiz: https://deeriq.com/season-3-quiz/ • Get a Smart Land & Hunting Plan for your Private Hunting Property HERE: https://deeriq.com/land-and-hunting-plans/ • GENERAL INFO about ALL Deer IQ Resources HERE: https://deeriq.com/services/ Website: https://deeriq.com Facebook Private Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/511109237864762 Deer IQ FREE Journal: https://deeriq.com/journal/ Pressured Public Lands Hunting Guide: https://deeriq.com/public-land-hunting-guide/ Newsletter Signup: https://deeriq.com/signup/ Patreon - Contribute Financially to Deer IQ: https://www.patreon.com/DeerIQPatreon Scent Control Regimen: https://deeriq.com/scentcontrol-regimen/ Episode # 117Guest: Host Adam Lewis, Gage HerrimanIQ ranking - 1 (Beginner)

In this episode of the Deer IQ Podcast we tackle the subject of the moon - does moon phase, or position, really cause bucks to move and potentially give hunters an edge? We talk to several high profile hunters (John Eberhart and Adam Hays III) to see their thoughts and why they hold these positions, and look at a recent collared buck study with Dr. Bronson Strickland to break down the real data - beyond the bias and BS, and reveal what the numbers actually say. We all know the whitetail grind. Year after year, around the clock and through all the seasons putting in the work hoping it will one day pay off on a monster buck. Very few work as hard as Ryan Reading; running dozens of cameras, studying deer patterns, and waiting to take the perfect moment and opportunity once it presents itself. For Ryan, it all came down to the 2025 rut and watching his giant target buck moving towards him from a stand he never thought he would see that deer from. Ryan joins us to tell the story, along with Mike Petrosky who was with him for the emotional recovery of the giant buck. Monsters do exist, and dreams can come true. On this edition of West Virginia Outdoors, Chris Lawrence delivers a full morning of hunting and fishing stories from across the Mountain State — starting with the show open and moving through four big-buck interviews and a river-run “best of” fishing segment.Segment 1 – Show Open:Chris kicks off the show with listener shout-outs from across the country and previews four remarkable West Virginia buck stories. He sets the stage with updates from elk camps, podcast listeners abroad, and a rundown of where each of the day's featured hunters took their deer.Segment 2 – Jamie Suko, Braxton County:Jamie Suko proves you don't need a large tract of land to harvest a trophy buck. From just over two acres behind her home, she tags a big 10-point she and her husband had tracked for a year. She walks Chris through the hunt, the nerves, the shot at 30 yards, and the fast recovery — all while juggling a toddler back at the house.Segment 3 – Hayden Blankenship, Wyoming County:Next up is Hayden Blankenship, who takes a Southern West Virginia bow-only county giant — a 10-point buck he'd documented for more than a year. Hayden describes near-misses from the previous season, velvet photos, and the dramatic opening-day encounter when the deer fed five yards from his blind before presenting a perfect shot.Segment 4 – “Best Of” River Fishing with Larry Nibert:Chris heads out on the water with Larry Nibert of The West Virginia Experience for a replay of one of the show's most popular fall fishing conversations. They discuss reading river water, locating smallmouth pockets, cold-weather gear, and why sudden temperature drops produce trophy fish. Along the float, they break down lure selection, turbidity, oxygen levels, and navigating the ledges of the New River. Savannah even hooks multiple fish during the interview.Segment 5 – “Best Of” Fur Tanning with Keith Daniels:The show closes with a visit to the West Virginia Trappers Convention, where fur buyer Keith Daniels explains the science behind properly scraping, drying, and preparing pelts. Chris asks about common mistakes trappers make, how long pelts stay on stretchers, and the chemistry of pickling and tanning. Daniels details how furs are transformed into lightweight, flexible leather ready for the garment trade.
Kansas public land will break you before it ever rewards you — and this trip proves it. From temperatures in the teens to 70-degree heat waves, endless walking, blown setups, other hunters slipping into the same spots, busted deer, shifting winds, and miles of ground that should be good but just isn't… Justin goes through it all. But when you're willing to grind, keep moving, and trust your buddies, everything can change in a single moment. In this episode, Justin road-trips into Kansas with Matt Millard and Tyler Barron, to bowhunt unfamiliar public land. The guys face adversity in the form of blown setups, swirling winds, other hunters, lack of deer sign, and just about everything that Mother Nature can throw at you. But in the end, it all pays off with the biggest buck of his life. If you're a serious bowhunter, you won't want to miss this one!
How many hunters can say they arrowed a 206-inch whitetail at 15 yards… from the ground?
A chaotic November morning begins with a forgotten bow, a 400-yard sprint back to the truck, and a race against first light. Turkeys are gobbling, deer are moving, and the ridge is alive with rut activity. Then the hunt takes an unexpected turn.A buck Kurt hasn't seen since November 6th, 2023 — a heavy-bodied, half-spike bruiser with a distinct old injury — suddenly appears in the exact same area as before. With turkeys feeding beneath him and the woods glowing red at sunrise, Kurt finds himself in a close-range encounter with a buck he has two years of history with. The kind of moment that defines November.
It's been a wild stretch for Kurt in late October! After discovering his main camera was completely out of focus, he's back in the tree with a new setup—and just in time for a major cold front to hit. Between broken gear, freshly picked cornfields, and bucks starting to feel the rut, it's a rollercoaster week in the whitetail woods.
In this episode I sit down with writer, author, film producer and a man with what I feel has the best handle ever (Herd Bull), Mike Mitten. Mike is a bowhunter who has been bowhunting for over 50 years. Mikes shares his passionate bowhunting adventures through his books, his magazine articles, and his YouTube channel. From his 3-week solo trips in Alaska, to hunting big mature whitetail bucks on his home farm in the Midwest. This podcast has everything! and trust me when I say, we only begun to scratch the surface. This is one you don't want to miss.
In this episode of Becoming a Bowhunter, Matty is joined by Brad Murphy and Ben Atherton for a deep dive into Australia's most elusive and challenging deer species: Sambar. Brad shares his decades of experience as a bowhunting coach, explaining how to pattern sambar behaviour, know where to find them and how to best set your expectations for hunting them. Ben has hunted Sambar deer his whole life… It's only within the past few years he's chased them with a bow, but in that time he's successfully taken them with a stick bow and has a lot of incredibly useful knowledge on Sambar deer to share. We break this detailed overview into a few sections. Seasonal hunting, how to find them, habits of the deer, and how to best be successful on public land. Whether you're planning your first hunt or chasing your 20th, this is the most comprehensive and practical episodes we've ever recorded on hunting sambar deer with a bow.

In this episode, Robin, Fred Hammer, and Robin Gratz spend three action-packed days trying to land an African monster. This is no small feat. Given the extremely high caliber of apex predators in South Africa, e.g Lions, Leopards, Cheetahs, hyenas and packs of African wild dogs... antelope have developed an incredible skill-set that keeps them alive against all odds. So, getting close with a bow in hand is sometimes laughably difficult. Thankfully, they manage to close the distance, and arrows fly. A big thanks to Fred Hammer from Bowhunting Africa for his fantastic guiding services, and Robin Gratz from Daggaboy films for capturing the adventure. -----------------Subscribe to this podcast so you're always up to date.
