It's time to celebrate episode 100! To do so, we are tackling one of Hollywood's most famous (maybe infamous?) historical blockbusters--Braveheart. The film turns 30 this month (May 2025) and the sisters spark up and sit down in the Smoke Circle with Dr. Darren R. Reid, associate professor of history at Coventry University. Dr. Reid is himself Scottish so the subject matter is near and dear to his heart.Join us in the Smoke Circle as we dismantle the movie scene by scene, learning the REAL history as we go along, picking our favorite moments and the characters that we loved to cheer for (and the ones we loved to hate)ALSO! DON'T MISS IT! From now until Friday, May 16th, we have our movie watch along to both Braveheart and Outlaw King on our Patreon open to the public so everyone can watch along with us and really get into the spirit with us. But it's only up through May 16th!!Braveheart Watch AlongOutlaw King Watch Along~~~~~~~*Check Out What Our Guest, Dr. Darren R. Reid, is Doing! When critics hinted Maurice Prendergast was getting a little repetitive as he approached 50, he could've hung up his brushes. After all, he'd been pretty successful. Instead, he headed back to where it all began--Paris--and came away reinvigorated with “a new impulse,” as he called it. Today's episode takes us to the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington DC. We'll find out how an idea that started with Congress just before the Depression led to an official modern art museum on the National Mall! We'll meet Dr. John Dee, who was Queen Elizabeth I's trusted seer and learn about the attitudes around magic and divination before Elizabeth's successor begins his witch hunts. We'll also uncover the secrets of the tarot, and step into the shadowy parlors of the Victorians with their flickering candlelit séances and spirit (Ouija) boards. After all the history, we spend time with our guest, Saundra, a psychic medium and intuitive tarot reader. She answers our burning questions about being a psychic medium and does a collective reading for the Smoke Circle which...whoo! gave us a whole lotta feels. ~~~~~~~*Check Out What Our Guest, Saundra, is Doing!www.saundrainsagittarius.comTikTok: @saundra.in.sagittariusInstagram: @saundra.in.sagYouTube: @saundra.in.sagittarius~~~~~~~*The Socials and Patreon!Patreon-- The Best Buds Club! In episode 96, the sisters jump into some women's history beginning with the amazing and long history of Black midwifery in America. In early America, enslaved Black midwives (as well as Indigenous women) were responsible for birthing nearly all children in the United States. Today, Black midwives only make up between 5 to 9% of the profession while Black women are three to four times likely to die from a pregnancy related cause than white women (National Institutes of Health). In part two, Laurel chats about the amazing Nellie Bly, born Elizabeth Cochrane, who launched a new kind of investigative journalism. From checking into a women's asylum in order to expose its mistreatment of patients to traveling around the world to coming out of retirement to cover the horrors of World War I in Europe, Nellie lived one hell of a life...~~~~~~~*Mentioned in the Stories:Black Midwifery Collective~~~~*The Socials and Patreon!Patreon-- The Best Buds Club! In this half baked mini episode, Laurel sparks one up and talks about the life of Harriet Tubman, the most successful "conductor" of the Underground Railroad and the "Moses of Her People."Tubman's name is very famous in American history and she was a total badass of a human being. Did you know in addition to helping free potentially hundreds upon hundreds of enslaved men, women and children, she was also a Civil War spy, nurse and the first woman in American history to help lead a major military operation?Sources:Biography.com Editors. “Harriet Tubman.”Biography.com, A&E Networks Television, 25 Jan. 2021,www.biography.com/activist/harriet-tubman. In 1950, Cinderella saved Disney from destruction. Hi there! We saved you a spot in the smoke circle! Puff, puff, pass y'all! Otherwise, KT has some "Cab Sav" for you if you're interested. This week's episode covers a wide span of history starting with Laurel's story of more recent times about the Feather Heist of a scientifically and historically priceless collection of rare birds from the British Natural History Museum. It is WILD so buckle in for the ride. I mean, did you know there is basically a fly fishing underground?! What? After our great heist adventure, KT takes us further back in the history books and tells us about the great Frederick Douglass, who inspired Black History Month. We also get to meet the amazing women in his life that helped him achieve all the great things he accomplished. ~~~~~~ This episode is a "remastering" and made for video version. Some editing has been done since its original release in July 2021. It's episode 93 and it is time for some HIGH seas and some HIGH-sts (heists, we might have been trying a bit too hard there with the word play) First up, Kt takes us to Korea during Japan's invasions of the nation, commonly known as the Imjin War in Korea's Joseon Period (1392 to 1910). There we meet Korea's great admiral, Yi Sun-sin, who won several key battles against the odds, helping to turn the tides of the war. Next, we head to 1911 Paris and watch as the heist of the world's most famous painting unfolds at the Louvre--the theft of Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa. You won't believe how lax the security was and how easy it was to pluck pieces off the wall and walk out... *~*~*~*~* Mentioned in the Episode: Map of Korean Peninsula (North and South Korea didn't exist at this time, this map is just to show the geography and location of Korea) Map of the Battle of Meyongeyang Map of the Battle of Noryang High Tales of History Episode 4: https://open.spotify.com/episode/3dXDOSSdwGIHo3rkwNNw9G High Tales of History Episode 8 (Kt's History Crush): https://open.spotify.com/episode/4NP6N73C9DbQLmeBDBfjXm *~*~*~*~* The Socials and Patreon! Well howdy and welcome to episode 90 of High Tales of History! For the month of October we are taking a trip into spooky and horrible histories and in episode 90, we are taking a trip to Europe to hear all about their werewolf trials which came out of the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries' anxieties about religious and political clashes as well as a gross attempt to find a scapegoat for these changes and harsh conditions. Next, we head to the court of France's King Louis XIV, a place that is already a hotbed of jealousy, deceit and ambition and add poison and magic spells meant to eliminate enemies and influence their position at court. We also take a side trip to Italy to learn about the Aqua Tofana poison ring which may have been responsible for 600 deaths! *~*~*~*~* Mentioned in the Episode: Episode 31: History's Worst Serial Killers You've Never Heard Of *~*~*~*~*~ The Socials and Patreon!
