How do you feel about dams? What about chimpanzees? Is concrete your thing? How about scientific women? Well, for episode 56, we have all those things. First, KT recounts the construction of the Hoover Dam, which celebrated an 88th anniversary on March 1, 2023. The dam, which is the largest in the United States, contains enough concrete to build a road from San Francisco to New York City! Next up, Laurel discusses Dr. Jane Goodall, primatologist, anthropologist and the world's foremost expert on chimpanzees! Hear about her 60-plus years of research and her legacy in activism and conservationism. Welcome to episode 54! We have two stories celebrating Black history for the month of February! First off, we have the rough and gruff, gun-toting, cigar smoking, take no shit Mary Fields, often known to history as "Stagecoach Mary!" She was the United States' first Black woman (and 2nd woman) to run a star route for the postal system. A star route mail carrier used a stagecoach on treacherous and rocky rural roads out west and had to defend against wild animals and bandits all the while. Next, KT takes us back 3 more centuries to feudal Japan to learn about Yasuke, the African man who arrived in Japan with a Jesuit missionary and became the close confidant of Oda Nobunaga, the "Great Unifier" of Japan as well as the first non-Asian samurai! *~*~*~*~ Mentioned in the Stories: Stagecoach Mary's Gravesite Statue of Yasuke Map of Feudal Japan *~*~*~*~ The Socials!
