One thing I love about interviewing people across such a wide spectrum is humans is that I get to learn about worlds that I would otherwise never explore. Today is no different. Cody Wheat is a Brand Ambassador for Sazerac, so basically his job is to be an evangelist for bourbon, and he also hosts the Shots of History podcast, in which he does these amazing deep-dives into the history of different spirits. So basically the dude knows booze, and as a minimal drinker myself, I'm a total novice. After this hour, I'm considerably more educated! I hope you enjoy.
The gang welcomes fellow podcaster, Cody Wheat of the "Shots of History" podcast. The gang does the whole interview in animal heads in honor of Halloween, and Cody takes it all in stride. Cody and the gang talk about alcohol, the history of alcohol and Father James calls in to ask Cody his favorite drink. The holy man isn't real excited about Cody's answer, but what would you expect from Father James? LeRoy tries to hook Cody up with @VexingVixxen, which is really weird. After the gang took off their animal heads Earl did a tech review of a food delivery service that never delivered our food. So needless to say the ended on a hungry note. Oh, and there was a lot of other stuff too.
America has a strange relationship with alcohol. Certain drinks represented the darkest parts of the national psyche. Rum was once associated with slavery because sugar cane plantations that made rum were only profitable with chattel slavery. Whisky and hard cider were omnipresent in the 19th century, turning able-bodied men into drunkards who couldn't support their families and left them to starve. But it was Prohibition that is strangest of all. America successfully outlawed alcohol, the first and only modern nation to do so. The unintended consequences were enormous: from physicians falsifying alcohol's positive effects so they could write prescriptions for “medicine” and make a handsome profit, to record numbers of men converting to Judaism so they could administer alcohol in rabbinical ceremonies. Here to untangle the Gordion knot of alcohol in America's past is Cody Wheat from the Shots of History Podcast.
I love a good cocktail and I really love history, so sugars, I loved Cody Wheat and his freakin' fascinating podcast Shots of History. I mean some people live to drink...which isn't all that great. But alcohol has driven the behavior of our government, our cultures, and are hobbies. Loved this episode. And subscribe to Cody's show on Apple Podcasts.
