In 2013, Shane Devine felt a creative itch that needed to be scratched. Initially, he just wanted to record some songs that bopped around in his head, but his first album was well received and performance opportunities came knocking. With that success, Devine formed the Opera Bell Band, a music and comedy group that embraces silly humor, catchy lyrics and, most recently, plant science. Their latest album “A Salute to Corn” was commissioned by Missouri Botanical Garden. Devine and his bandmate and wife, Kristina DeYong, share their creative process, the close relationships among the bandmates and the science behind their “corny” music.

Sei, in tutto.

On Saturday, the United States marked 250 years since the Second Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, establishing the original 13 American colonies as a new, independent nation. In addition to the traditional fireworks and parades, cities and states held special celebrations reflecting on the country's history for its semiquincentennial. In Washington, D.C., large crowds gathered to celebrate across the capital. While some of President Donald Trump's “Salute to America” event was canceled or delayed due to extreme weather — including a temporary evacuation of the National Mall — the president delivered an address on the Mall, followed by a massivefireworks display.Ad-free podcasts are here!To listen to this podcast ad-free, and to enjoy our subscriber only premium content, go to ReadTangle.com to sign up! Lightning delays, a crowd that shrank from 375,000 to a very dedicated 150,000, and a president determined to give his speech anyway, welcome to America's 250th birthday party. Badlands Media brings you the full Salute to America broadcast from the National Mall, where Trump walks through two and a half centuries of flags, founders, and fireworks with a rotating cast of genuine American legends on stage beside him, from a 107 year old D Day veteran to the crew of Artemis II. Expect Second Amendment talk, a full throated case against communism, some record breaking economic numbers, and a surprising number of musical interludes (yes, there's karaoke energy here). It's part history lesson, part rally, part concert, and entirely Fourth of July. Stick around for the anthem and the fireworks announcement at the end.

“Trust your instruments.” This mantra is repeated all through flight school. While flying, it's easy to get disoriented visually, especially in thick fog. Pilots must learn to trust their gauges, not their vision. Boys today are also “flying through fog,” so to speak. In the confusion of cultural relativism and gender fluidity, young men don't know where they are or where they are going. So they often choose their own course, or refuse to move at all. As parents, we must help our son gain a solid foundation and understanding of God's Word. Involve your boy in organizations that are founded on Biblical truth. Help him find a positive, godly mentor. And encourage your boy to memorize Scripture– the only “instrument” that will never fail him. To learn about raising boys to be godly men, visit Trail Life USA or RaisingGodlyBoys.com.
What would a Daoist utopia actually look like? A perfect society? A better political system? A sacred rulebook everyone finally agrees to follow? Not exactly. In this free episode of Living the Tao (1-187), Master Mikel Steenrod and Morgan explore the Daoist view of utopia, and why Taoism begins with personal liberation rather than social control. The conversation moves through the Tao Te Ching, Confucianism, Laozi as the fed-up scholar leaving society behind, and the uncomfortable truth that humans may be building machines faster than they are developing wisdom. Along the way, the episode asks a sharper question: What if the reason humanity cannot build a perfect world is that humans have not yet developed enough to imagine one? This is a talk about Taoism, technology, failed ideologies, personal freedom, and the double donkey salute of Laozi riding out of a broken system. In this episode: Why the Tao Te Ching did not create Taoism The difference between personal liberation and social rule-making Why Daoism is not apolitical, but anti-political How technology can outpace human development Why old “isms” keep failing What a Taoist utopia might actually require Watch the video version of this episode: https://youtu.be/6H5JFASQ10Q
