Episode 2496: Lily Scherlis on the soft skills crisis in America today

The Harper's cover story this month is about the ever-softening soft skills of American workers. Written by Lily Scherlis, it suggests that today's emphasis on "soft skills" reflects America's broader anxieties about automation, workplace conditions, and ever deepening socioeconomic inequality. After attending a Dale Carnegie training course, Scherlis observed how these programs frame human connection as something that can be quantified and engineered. She suggests that the focus on developing individual soft skills serves as a way to blame workers for systemic problems while avoiding addressing deeper political and economic issues. Scherlis views this trend as part of what she calls the "fantasy of the center" that values cultural politeness over meaningful political change. five key takeaways * Scherlis argues that the "soft skills crisis" is not actually about declining sociability but rather reflects deeper anxieties about labor conditions, automation, and political issues.* The Dale Carnegie training she attended focused on teaching formulaic approaches to influence others, emphasizing presentation skills and self-promotion rather than genuine connection.* The concept of "soft skills" emerged from the US military in the early 1970s as an attempt to quantify and control human connection and relationships.* There's a generational component where complaints about Gen Z's workplace behavior mask intergenerational resentment and fears about social change.* The emphasis on individual "adaptability" as a soft skill shifts responsibility from systemic problems to workers, blaming them for not being flexible enough to handle deteriorating conditions.Keen On America is a reader-supported publication. Amidst all the chaos and hysteria of Trump 2.0, some things in America never change. As the Atlanta based journalist Brian Goldstone notes in There Is No Place For Us, America's “invisible” working homeless population have been mostly ignored by both Democratic and Republican administrations. Goldstone reveals how approximately 4 million Americans who work full-time jobs cannot today afford housing, with many living in extended-stay hotels, cars, or doubled-up with others. He highlights that 93% of homeless families in Atlanta are Black, and argues that these working homeless are victims of both failed economic policies and a lack of tenant protections. Goldstone criticizes both political parties for failing to address this crisis and calls for treating housing as a fundamental right rather than a commodity.Five Key Takeaways from this Goldstone Interview* Working Homelessness Crisis: Approximately 4 million Americans experience homelessness despite holding jobs, forming an "invisible" crisis where families live in extended-stay hotels, cars, or doubled-up with others.* Racial Disparity: In Atlanta, 93% of homeless families are Black, revealing significant racial disparities in housing insecurity, despite the city's reputation as a "Black Mecca."* Exploitative Housing Systems: Extended-stay hotels function as expensive, unregulated homeless shelters where families pay significantly more ($17,000 for eight months in one case) than they would for apartments they can't access due to credit barriers.* Bipartisan Failure: Both Republican and Democratic administrations have failed to address the root causes of housing insecurity, with Goldstone describing it as a "bipartisan abandonment of working poor people."* Housing as Commodity: The fundamental problem is treating housing as an investment vehicle or commodity rather than a basic human necessity, allowing it to be "auctioned off to the highest bidder."Keen On America is a reader-supported publication. Has the US become a bad place to be a Christian? In a recent NY Times feature, writer Aaron Renn, who has been called the "Malcolm Gladwell of Conservative Christianity," claims that America has shifted into a "negative world" where Christianity is a social liability. In this episode, Mark and Kelly wrestle with this idea that Christianity is losing its cultural dominance in the US. We cover a range of topics such as the prevalence of Christianity (a recent PRRI study asserts that 2/3 of Americans identify as Christian), Christian nationalism, persecution, tolerance, inclusion, privilege and power, the response of Progressive Christians, and what it even means to be a Christian in the first place. On January 20, 2025, Donald J. Trump will not only become our commander-in-chief; he will also become the Left's public enemy No. 1. Coincidentally enough, many former presidents and politicians will be in attendance except for Michelle Obama. Whitlock unravels the undercover plot to anoint Michelle Obama to run against the GOP nominee in 2028. It's obvious that Michelle's aspirations of becoming the WoMAN King are falsely motivated by her Joy Taylor treatment. Not to mention that the Joy Taylor story wasn't even posted on any main steam legacy news. Black women have become this sacred cow. They have entered the realm of untouchables and if you do criticize them, you are the issue. They have become a trojan horse of virtue that will destroy this country. Steve Kim joins the show to elaborate on the Bronsexual Maverick Carter's idea to bring an international competing league to rival the NBA. Not a bad idea when the NBA Commissioner appears on "The Herd with Colin Cowherd" admitting that the NBA has some flaws. The NBA has to be so embarrassed by its narrative this year. Episode 85.  As the new secular year begins, along with the incoming presidential administration, it's a good time to hear a shortened version of my conversation with the esteemed journalist and speaker Wajahat Ali. Given the dominance of White Christian Nationalism and the debate about immigration, Wajahat's Sunni Muslim American identity and his family's Pakistani immigrant history, make him an ideal partner to talk about religious pluralism in America today. In this conversation we explore the challenges minorities face as well as the fears, hate and discomfort that drive the antagonism and protectionism of White Supremacy. But our conversation is not completely dark. Wajahat raises reasons for hope and steps we can each take towards a brighter future of dignity and freedom. Highlights:·       White Christian Nationalism.·       Balancing group identity and assimilation; history and modernity; religion and secularism.·       Suburban communities' fear despite material abundance.·       Progressives ceded spirituality to the right.·       Stand for dignity, freedom; reject hate-driven leadership.·       Steps of awareness, intention, and action for individual contributions.Bio:Wajahat is a New York Times contributing op-ed writer and Daily Beast columnist, public speaker, and recovering attorney. He also regularly appears on cable news and radio to discuss politics, religion, foreign policy and culture. Wajahat often speaks on the multifaceted American experience, covering our growing need for cultural unity, racial diversity, and inclusion. Additionally, he has published his first book Go Back To Where You Came From: And, Other Helpful Recommendations on Becoming American. Wajahat grew up in the Bay Area, California to Pakistani immigrant parents. He graduated from UC Berkeley with an English major and became a licensed attorney. He knows what it feels like to be the token minority in the classroom and the darkest person in a boardroom. Through characters like Elisa, Giles, Zelda, and the Amphibian Man—people existing on society's margins—it celebrates empathy, connection, and resistance against authoritarianism.

She lives in Brooklyn with her family. The Abadi Family saga begins when a modern-day Romeo and Juliet story between a Palestinian and a Jew ends in predictable tragedy. The family flees to America to mend, but encounters only more turmoil that threatens to tear the family apart. In the wake of the 1967 Six Day War, Tamar Abadi's world collapses when her sister-in-law is killed in what appears to be a terror attack but what is really the result of a secret relationship with a Palestinian poet. Tamar's husband, Salim, is an Arab and a Jew. Torn between the two identities, and mourning his sister's death, he uproots the family and moves them to the US. As Tamar struggles to maintain the integrity of the family's Jewish Israeli identity against the backdrop of the American “melting pot” culture, a Palestinian family moves into the apartment upstairs and she is forced to reckon with her narrow thinking as her daughter falls in love with the Palestinian son. Fearing history will repeat itself, Tamar's determination to separate the two sets into motion a series of events that have the power to destroy her relationship with her daughter, her marriage, and the family she has worked so hard to protect. This powerful debut novel explores Tamar's struggle to keep her family intact, to accept love that is taboo, and grapples with how exile forces us to reshape our identity in ways we could not imagine.https://www.zeevabukai.com/Support the show___https://livingthenextchapter.com/podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/Coffee Refills are always appreciated, refill Dave's cup here, and thanks!https://buymeacoffee.com/truemediaca

Join America's Roundtable (https://americasrt.com/) radio co-host and economist Natasha Srdoc with Dr. Arthur Laffer, also known as “The Father of Supply Side Economics” in their conversation about industrial policy in America today, Kamala Harris's proposal of price controls, smart regulation, energy independence during Trump Presidency, incentives, requiring price transparency for medical services, offseting carbon tax with a reduction of other taxes, tariffs and international trade. Dr. Laffer's career has been marked by experience and success in business, in public policy, and as an academic economist and professor. During the 1970s, Dr. Laffer was a consultant to Secretaries of the Treasury George Shultz and William Simon and Chief of Staff and Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld. He was the first to hold the title of Chief Economist at the Office of Management and Budget under Secretary of the Treasury George Shultz in the early 1970s. Dr. Laffer was a member of President Reagan's Economic Policy Advisory Board for both of his two terms (1981-1989). He also advised Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher on fiscal policy in the U.K. during the 1980s. Dr. Laffer's economic acumen and influence in triggering a world-wide tax-cutting movement in the 1980s have earned him the distinction in many publications as “The Father of Supply-Side Economics.” His Laffer Curve is one of the main theoretical constructs of supply-side economics. Dr. Laffer was an economic advisor to Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign. In 2019, President Trump awarded DR. Laffer with the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his contributions in the field of economics. He has received numerous awards and recognition for his economic work and authored a number of books, including the End of Prosperity: How Higher Taxes Will Doom the Economy—If We Let it Happen, and most recently Return to Prosperity and Trumponomics. Dr. Laffer currently lives in Nashville, Tennessee where he is the founder and chairman of Laffer Associates, an institutional economic research and consulting firm. americasrt.com (https://americasrt.com/) https://ileaderssummit.org/ | https://jerusalemleaderssummit.com/ America's Roundtable on Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/americas-roundtable/id1518878472 Twitter: @LafferCenter @ileaderssummit @NatashaSrdoc @JoelAnandUSA @supertalk America's Roundtable is co-hosted by Natasha Srdoc and Joel Anand Samy, co-founders of International Leaders Summit and the Jerusalem Leaders Summit. Unlike in other countries where land ownership is restricted, we have the freedom to buy and own assets like land, businesses, stocks, and more. But things are changing. The government is owning more and more, looking to control us, and it's a shift that can't be ignored. That's why I'm on a buying spree, and I'm encouraging you to do the same. Get ready to buy assets and secure your ownership because the era of buying is here, and it's time to take action. FYE HOW TO GET INVOLVED:  This planet is based on an algorithm and with every positive action, there is an adverse reaction.  Ryan Stewman rose and overcame a life of addiction, imprisonment, divorce, and circumstances that would break the spirit of the average human being.  He went on to create a powerful network of winners and champions in life and business creating a movement quickly changing lives one day at a time.

If Jesus is the reason for the season, why do most Christians celebrate Christmas at home with their families rather than at church? David Taylor, a professor of culture and theology at Fuller Theological Seminary, joins Skye to discuss the origins of Christmas in America. He says Queen Victoria, Charles Dickens, and Coca-Cola have done more to influence how we celebrate the birth of Jesus than gospel writers. And he explains why the Puritans who first settled in America believed Christmas was satanic. Speaking of Satan, we have an update on the Satanic Temple display in the Iowa State Capital. The Texas Supreme Court made a controversial, and confusing, ruling about abortion.
