Finally kicking out the last installment of the Time Capsule 2K13 series. After working on all four sets for the past several months, I can honestly say and predict that EDM as we may know it is on the precipice of plateauing. That's not to say that it won't be as big as ever in 2014, because it will. However, with the watering down and manufactured sounds spurred by the big labels that churn out one anthem after another, it's hard to differentiate between one artist or producer over the other. It's like “hey that formula really worked for Swedish House Mafia last year, so let's copy it 20 more times and we're guaranteed a hit or two. A good example of this is the young prodigy Zedd. Last year's Spectrum and this year's Clarity were both massive hits off of his major label debut on Interscope; so much so they released the “expanded” version of the album with the new single Stay the Night, which basically followed the same formula of its two predecessors. It was a decent enough song but so obviously formulaic, I couldn't help but feel his label is boxing him in and stifling his creativity. 2014 will be a real opportunity for him to switch it up and present us with something new while clicking on the dance floor as well as radio (the latter being expected by his bosses). Avicii clearly understands you have to stay fresh. His single Wake Me Up, which was panned by many as to country, folksy or gimmicky, went on to become one of the biggest EDM tracks of the year. If he had major label backing, it's likely that song may have never made it out of the gate. Of course, this leads me to the disco insurgence of 2013 by comeback kings Daft Punk. Thankfully, someone over at Sony had the good sense to put some serious backing and promotion behind their latest effort. Get Lucky was also one of the biggest dance tracks of 2013 and rightfully so. With its thick bassline recalling the late great Bernard Edwards and slick guitar licks by Nile Rogers both of Chic fame, the song would fit nicely smack dab in the middle of 1979. While I don't see any straight-up disco resurgence going forward, I wouldn't at all be surprised if it's sibling NuDisco manages to crossover into the mainstream sometime in 2014. With Tiesto taking up residence right next door to Britney in Las Vegas, you really begin to understand the copious amounts of money surrounding EDM now as it has moved from the underground to mainstream acceptance. The fuse has been lit in 2013 and will continue to burn (thank you Ellie G.) through 2014 before finally imploding sometime in 2015. Party Favorz has been at this a long time and has followed the trends from disco to NRG to house to trance and so forth. Each trend in dance music is a byproduct of another, often with a twist and I expect no different in the future. I am not making any predictions as to what new sounds may be in store for us but my undying passion for all things dance will continue unabated and Party Favorz fully expects to take everyone down the road towards “the next big thing” as it happens. So stick around and I'll make sure we stay on the right path. Album : Time Capsule 2K13 v4 Genre : EDM Year : 2013 Total Time : 1:17:54 1. Playing catchup this morning, I'm finally serving up the second set of Pride 2013 EDM. For those that haven't quite figured it out yet, this and it's companion set Pride 2013 v1 are comprised of some of the best in electronic dance so far this year coupled with brand-spanking numbers hand-picked by your humble host as surefire winners this summer season. I closed it out with two of my current favorite songs, which by all accounts are laid-back and breezy. I had posted the video for Chris Malinchak's So Good To Me several weeks ago and decided to drop in the slightly punchier Steve Smart & Westfunk Mix and then tapped it off with Easy by Mat Zo & Porter Robinson. If the latter name sounds familiar, it should. Porter's Language was my pick for one of the best songs from 2012. Here, he and Mat deliver a carefree song that will win over even the staunchest anti-EDM detractor. They do need to give credit where it's due; the song relies very heavily on a familiar synth rip that if you're a song history buff like me strikes a very similar chord to Steve Winwood's While You See a Chance (one of my all-time favorite tracks), which is probably why I was so drawn to it. However, I don't judge; a good riff is a good riff when used to create your own song. Next up, I'll be serving up a set geared towards my circuit boyz and that one is a MONSTER! I previously posted on Facebook that I wanted to break something after my first take and after previewing the end result, I was dead-on (though managed to restrain myself breaking anything LOL). At the end of the week, I've got a delightful throwback to Hi NRG classics and anthems for the true diehard Pride enthusiast amongst us. That's it for now and until my next post …ENJOY! Clearly, I've fallen behind in my posts. I'd apologize but shit happens. Rick has been dealing with life's shit and what affects him affects me. So, posts may be staggered between now and the end of May or until “life” resumes it's normal operating functions. As for the Circuit Classics, I had previously promised, those sets were lost during a transfer to a new computer build and will be pushed out at a future date. Once I realized what had happened, I didn't have it in me to go back and recreate them. So for now, they'll be on the back burner. This set was scheduled for Miami Music Week but was delayed (see paragraph one). Better late than never I suppose. Regardless, this IS one slamming set that's easy to digest, while maintaining it's AAA status for the club floor. The ATL finally got a break from all the cold and rain that was bringing everybody down and I hope it's warming up where ever you're at. Have a great weekend but most importantly …ENJOY!
