In this action-packed episode of **Chic Chat**, Amanda and Wendy dive deep into **left-foot braking** — the game-changing off-road technique that loads your driveline, prevents axle snaps, and gives you *poor-man's locker* control on rocks, climbs, and descents. Whether you're rock crawling in SoCal or tackling desert obstacles, learn: ✅ How to use **left foot on brake + right foot on gas** for smooth, controlled power ✅ Why it feels *weird at first* (and how to practice safely on small rocks) ✅ Real trail examples: cresting rocks without slipping back, avoiding momentum loss ✅ Pro tip: **Don't mash both pedals!** It's about *light, flexible pressure* Then we shift gears into **spotting mastery** — because great wheeling needs great guidance:
Author Heather Colley joins Literally Heinous to talk about her debut literary fiction novel, The Gilded Butterfly Effect — a haunting exploration of college Greek life, drug addiction, and hazing culture. We talk about what it's like to publish a novel at 27 (!!), her PhD experience at Oxford (double !!!!), and how she sees the state of literary fiction today.Heather shares her honest take on BookTok, smut books, and whether the rise of “spicy” books (sorry I hate typing that) is actually good for readers. We also unpack the difference between literary books and genre books (not all novels are the same, people!).A Lit Hein classic, we play a round of Chic or Freak, debating hot literary topics like performative reading in public or attending book club and not finishing the book.
Beyond thrilled to welcome back the dynamic writing duo Audrey Bellezza and Emily Harding to celebrate the latest installment in their For the Love of Austen trilogy — Anne of Avenue A! I absolutely adore these two, and their books are guaranteed to make you swoon. Inspired by Persuasion, Anne of Avenue A is a heartfelt second-chance romance featuring Anne — a leading lady Jane Austen herself would surely approve of.With a charming cast of characters and timeless themes, this story is a true homage to love that endures. We chatted about everything from Jane Austen's 250th birthday and her lasting influence on pop culture, to our shared love of romance novels, Felicity (so on brand for us!), the clever nods to reality TV woven into the book, and so much more.If you haven't yet read their backlist, I'm genuinely jealous — their novels are a celebration of love, Jane, and New York City!

The perfect autumnal read exists in Ellen O'Clovers adult romance debut, The Heartbreak Hotel. Do not be fooled by the charming and magical cover of this book, within these pages is a sweet romance wrapped with humanity, life and the road blocks we all face. The invisible string within this book was healing and how when you let your guard down and trust one another, real relationships can form.I loved chatting with Ellen about the cross over from YA to adult novels, the importance of setting, romance novels and the inspiration (hint it involves a Tom Petty song!) behind the book!I have said it before and I will say it again, we need romance now more than ever!

I was absolutely thrilled to welcome Nora Dahlia back to Books are Chic to celebrate her latest romance, Backslide! Set across dual timelines, this novel takes us back to one of my favorite decades — the unforgettable '90s.Backslide follows Nellie and Noah, high school sweethearts who reunite years later at a "wedding re-do" for mutual friends. As old sparks reignite, they discover the past isn't as far behind them as they thought. It's a beautifully written second-chance romance that's emotional, nostalgic, and completely unputdownable.Nora and I caught up since our last Lovestruck Books event (next one—10/27!!) and dove into how her travel writing shaped this story, what it was like growing up in NYC as a teen in the ‘90s, pop culture, romance, and so much more. This episode is easily one of my all-time favorites—a love letter to your teen self, the ‘90s, and pure nostalgia.

“Federico has made it alone, imagining much and working more, arriving from Ravenna, where he was born, to become part of King Charles III's task force.… Those who want to break the mold have to take risks, swim against the tide, walk untrodden paths.”—Giorgio Armani, from the foreword to The Geek of Chic. At the start of the 21st century, shopping online was still a futuristic fantasy. There was no Facebook, there were no iPhones. And yet, in the spring of 2000, Federico Marchetti invented one of the world's first platforms for online sales—and started a company that would revolutionize the luxury fashion sector. In THE GEEK OF CHIC: An American Dream, Italian Style (Post Hill Press; September 9, 2025; ISBN: 9798895650608; $18.99; 288 pages; Original Trade Paperback), international fashion business and tech icon Federico Marchetti, (with a foreword by Giorgio Armani), shares his engaging, honest and passionate memoir that reveals how he morphed from a geeky kid in the sleepy seaside town of Ravenna, Italy to a pioneer in online retail, offering practical advice for entrepreneurs and inspiration for visionaries and big dreamers. The Geek of Chic explains the present and future of Marchetti's life, including working on His Majesty King Charles III's service as Chair of The Sustainable Markets Initiative's Fashion Task Force, which includes brands such as Chloé, Armani, Burberry, Cucinelli, Stella McCartney, and Prada. In a sector known for individualism, Marchetti is uniting global luxury groups around a common goal of shifting towards a circular industry that is climate-conscious and nature-positive. The King of England now considers Marchetti his consigliere on matters of regenerative fashion and digital innovation, collaborating on several initiatives and projects. Unfolding against a backdrop of famed vistas—Milan, Lake Como, Venice, England's Royal Palace, New York City, Shanghai, Tokyo, and Dubai—and featuring encounters with notables from Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos to Giorgio Armani and Anna Wintour, The Geek of Chic's message is relevant to a new generation of entrepreneurs who wish to combine innovation, business acumen, and AI with humanism, creativity and empathy: how to achieve the American dream in an Italian way. When identical twins Mike and Alex Faherty launched their clothing brand, they made a daring move– launching wholesale, retail, and online, pretty much at the same time. Investors said it was outdated, maybe even doomed. But that contrarian bet helped grow Faherty into a hugely popular brand, built on family, ingenuity, and obsession with detail. The two brothers spent 12 years preparing for launch—Mike at Ralph Lauren learning the craft of fashion, Alex in finance learning the mechanics of business. In the early days they traveled the country in a beach house on wheels, pulling over on the PCH to sell bathing suits and board shorts. Mike's designs—surf culture meets big-city chic—took hold online, in department stores, and even swanky boutiques in Japan, giving Faherty the momentum it needed to eventually grew to $250 million in sales. What You'll Learn:Why the “all channels” strategy (wholesale + retail + online) can actually be a competitive advantage. The power of 12 years of preparation prior to launch. How to leverage factory relationships and suppliers as true partners. Why old-school, in-person sales can be a killer marketing tool How family, trust, and resilience became a core advantage of the Faherty brand.Timestamps:(05:41) Mike discovers Bergdorf's, cashmere, and fashion inspiration as a teenager in NYC(08:19) Mike gets grief from his basketball teammates for studying fashion at Wash U(13:38) Mike lands a job at Ralph Lauren to learn fashion from the inside(21:28) The moment Alex's mentor tells him that starting a clothing brand is “the dumbest idea I've ever heard”(31:41) The brothers launch Faherty online from a borrowed apartment in Puerto Rico(35:00) Roaming the country in a mobile beach house that doubles as their first store(41:34) Early wins with specialty shops(59:14) The brand nearly runs out of money and gets rescued by a man from Nantucket (1:07:14) A Covid-era gamble that pays off in massive growth (1:15:04) How the identical-twin bond became a superpower for the brandFollow How I Built This:Instagram → @howibuiltthisX → @HowIBuiltThisFacebook → How I Built ThisFollow Guy Raz:Instagram → @guy.razYoutube → guy_razX → @guyrazSubstack → guyraz.substack.comWebsite → guyraz.comSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Using artworks by Berthe Morisot, Édouard Manet, Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and others, The Art of Parisian Chic: Modern Women and Modern Artists in Impressionist Paris (Bloomsbury, 2025) by Dr. Justine De Young explores how women and artists in Impressionist Paris (1855-1885) crafted their public images to exploit and resist stereotypes.French societal expectations and beauty ideals shaped how women were seen and how they chose to present themselves in public – whether on the street, in a photograph, or in a portrait on the walls of the annual Paris Salon. On Paris's broad new boulevards and in its public parks and theaters, women dressed to impress anonymous strangers as well as their friends. They even circulated aspirational photographs of themselves. Looking at a rich array of visual sources – from portraits to modern-life paintings, and from photographs to fashion plates – Dr. De Young reveals how women were seen, how they aspired to be seen, and how they navigated public life in Second Empire and Belle Époque Paris. This book considers how fashionable feminine “types” made famous in books, caricatures, and paintings created a visual lexicon and stylistic guide for women. Men and women alike relied on these types – cocotte (mistress), jeune veuve (young widow), amazone (independent equestrienne), demoiselle de magasin (shopgirl), and Parisienne (chic Parisian woman) – to judge the class, character, morality, and worth of strangers. With a rich set of illustrations from the Impressionist canon and beyond, The Art of Parisian Chic shows how modern women used fashion and these stereotypes to construct and reinvent their identities. In this week's episode, we break down the strength of the current stock market—after several years of 20%+ returns, we're on track for another strong year with the market up 15% heading into the fourth quarter. We discuss companies posting record profits, the sheer number of all-time highs we've seen, and debate whether this momentum represents a new normal or just an anomaly. We also dig into the drama of a government shutdown—what sparked it, what really happens when Washington stalls, and what history tells us about the real impact on the economy. We'll focus on what really matters for your money, and talk about the broader consequences along with what it might take to prevent future standoffs. Why does the economy look strong on paper while so many people feel squeezed? We dig into the growing divide between the “haves” and “have-nots,” where the top 10% income earners drive nearly half of all spending while the middle class is getting squeezed out. From budget hotels struggling to fill rooms to luxury resorts booked solid, we'll explore what this bifurcation means for the economy—and for everyday investors. To wrap up the show, we're taking a sweet detour into the world of dirty soda—the over-the-top, syrup-and-cream-loaded drinks that are taking TikTok by storm. From candy add-ins to premade bottles and even specialty soda shops, we'll explore why everyone suddenly wants their soda “dirty” and what this trend says about today's foodie culture.Join hosts Nick Antonucci, CVA, CEPA, Director of Research, and Managing Associates K.C.
