Fun Palaces
Fun Palaces: Stella Duffy and Sarah-Jane Rawlings

Fun Palaces

Today it's a Fun Palaces conversation between Stella Duffy and Sarah-Jane Rawlings as they prepare to step down as co-directors and say farewell (although it's really not goodbye forever!).    About Fun Palaces Stella Duffy and Sarah-Jane Rawlings co-founded Fun Palaces in 2013 to create a celebration of Joan Littlewood's centenary on the 6th October 2014. As more communities, individuals and organisations across the UK asked if they could join in, it quickly became clear that it was never going to be a one-off.   Developed from Joan Littlewood and Cedric Price's never-built 1960s vision of one building for all arts and science, free to the local community of the East End, the 21st century Fun Palaces is about reclaiming public space, encouraging cultural venues to throw open their doors, shining a light on unsung community activism and supporting local people to step up to co-create their own community events. Learning from the communities that take part every year, Fun Palaces has changed and grown, and is now as varied as the people who take part.    This year the emphasis was on tiny Fun Palaces - safe, socially-distanced, with community connection at their heart - and how anyone can get involved - even now.    Thanks for listening to the Fun Palaces podcast. A poetic monologue written and performed by Degna Stone. Half-way through life and the answer to most questions always seems to be the same. Should I stop drinking through the week? Will I feel better if I exercise? Is the planet really f@*ked? Have we left it too late? Did 17-year-old me know more than I do? Maybe I’m asking the wrong questions... Produced and edited by Matt Jamie Music by SIMRIT www.facebook.com/simritmusic Seydina Mboup www.facebook.com/kolektivomusic and Jeff McIlwain www.facebook.com/lusine.official (originally produced in 2019 by Coracle as a reaction piece to "Down to Zero" by Lizi Patch. Updated and adapted for radio in 2020.)

Award-winning poet Andrew McMillan takes a deeper look at the poetry of the North, as part of Rich Seams, a brand new podcast series celebrating the best of new and emerging poetry in the North of England. In a special, live edition of Rich Seams, Andrew begins his journey to dig down into the place of poetry in the North; he’s joined by North East based poets Jake Campbell, John Challis and Degna Stone to think about who’s voices poetry allows us to hear, who we still need to hear more from and whether there is a particularly northern idea of poetry. Recorded live at Durham Book Festival on Saturday 13th October at Durham Town Hall. To find out more about the Rich Seams podcast, visit durhambookfestival.com. Rich Seams was commissioned for Durham Book Festival. Durham Book Festival is a Durham County Council event, produced by New Writing North with support from Durham University and Arts Council England.

Do visit them for further inspiration and to find out more about Tony and his work: www.faber.co.uk/author/tony-harrison/ Peter visited The Poetry Exchange at BALTIC Contemporary Arts Centre in Gateshead, as part of the Raising The Flag Event. We're very grateful to BALTIC for hosting The Poetry Exchange so warmly. Discover more about their work and their fascinating programme of events: www.baltic.art Peter is in conversation with The Poetry Exchange team members, John Prebble and Degna Stone. 'Continuous' is read by John Prebble. ***** Continuous By Tony Harrison James Cagney was the one up both our streets. His was the only art we ever shared. A gangster film and choc ice were the treats that showed about as much love as he dared. He'd be my own age now in '49! The hand that glinted with the ring he wore, his father's, tipped the cold bar into mine just as the organist dropped through the floor. He's on the platform lowered out of sight to organ music, this time on looped tape, into a furnace with a blinding light where only his father's ring will keep its shape. I wear it now to Cagney's on my own And sense my father's hands cupped round my treat – they feel as though they've been chilled to the bone from holding my ice cream all through White Heat.

Episode #7: The North The theme for this latest episode is the North. It’s unlikely to have escaped your attention that we’re about to witness a Great Exhibition of the North that’s a once-in-a generation opportunity to celebrate all kinds of northern-ness, and explore what the North actually means in 2018. To help us understand a little more about the special and specific sounds of the North we talk to radio DJ Lauren Laverne about the week of gigs by northern artists she is curating for the Exhibition and artist Mark Fell, who is creating a sound installation at Sage Gateshead made up of northern sounds. We pop-in with poet Degna Stone and folk musicians Bella Hardy and Sarah Hayes as they prepare their performance of new music and spoken word, called Backbone of Our Land. And we find out from Vinyl-o-phile, comedian and general know-it-all Steve Drayton what he considers to be the great albums of the North. Backstage is a regular podcast where we go behind the scenes for exclusive interviews and insights from leading and emerging artists who’ll be taking to the stage at Sage Gateshead, and discover some of the activities that take place, and the communities that meet there.
