Most of us just want to know one thing: what's the best way to invest? Decades ago, William J. Bernstein had the same question, so he decided to find out. That led him to become an early supporter of the simple, evidence-based approach: keeping costs low, diversifying widely, and not trying to beat the market. It's basically the philosophy behind modern index investing and he shared it through several classic books, including The Four Pillars of Investing.

One year after Brian Thompson was shot on a Manhattan sidewalk, Luigi Mangione's lawyers are fighting to throw out the most critical evidence in the case—the ghost gun, the manifesto, and everything he said to police. The suppression hearing started last week. We finally saw the body cam footage from inside that McDonald's. We heard the 911 call. And we learned that an officer said they "probably need a search warrant"—right before they searched anyway. If the defense wins, prosecutors lose the murder weapon and the motive. Here's what happened this week, what's at stake, and what comes next. #LuigiMangione #BrianThompson #UnitedHealthcare #TrueCrime #SuppressionHearing Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? In this episode, host David Mandell welcomes Dr. Paul Lynch, a double board-certified anesthesiologist and pain management specialist, entrepreneur, and business leader. Dr. Lynch shares his remarkable journey from aspiring psychiatrist to pain medicine innovator—a shift inspired by his mother-in-law's battle with cancer and the discovery of interventional pain treatments that could transform patients' lives. His early experiences at the Mayo Clinic shaped his belief in comprehensive, integrated care—a philosophy that became the foundation for his first practice, Arizona Pain, which quickly became one of the nation's leading pain management centers. Dr. Lynch details how entrepreneurial thinking, coupled with strategic use of digital tools, drove his success. His story of launching a medical website during fellowship—eventually ranking number one on Google before opening his doors—illustrates how physicians can use education-based marketing to reach patients and grow responsibly. As his career evolved, Dr. Lynch founded U.S. Pain Care, intentionally designed to avoid the mistakes of his first venture. Through introspection and what he calls his "Manifesto of 53 Errors," he now builds companies around lessons learned, focusing on empowering other physicians with ownership, autonomy, and ethical profitability. The discussion also delves into real estate, private equity, and long-term business strategy in medicine. Dr. Lynch explains how owning medical real estate can be one of the most impactful and ethical ways for physicians to build wealth—separate from clinical care—highlighting the benefits of property ownership, long-term leasing, and physician-owned REITs. He closes with advice to doctors: never make fortunes "on the backs of patients." Instead, focus on providing excellent care while building wealth through smart business decisions, integrity, and surrounding yourself with expert advisors in law, finance, and real estate. In this episode of Explaining History, Nick analyzes the newly published 2025 US National Security Strategy, a document that could be considered a foundational text for the global far-right.We explore how this strategy, with its language of "civilizational erasure" and "European greatness," mirrors the rhetoric of leaders like Viktor Orban and the conspiracy theories of the "Great Replacement." Nick argues that this is not just ideology; it is a manifesto for American interference in European elections, designed to undermine social democracy and pave the way for deregulation favorable to US capital. From the demonization of migration to the cynical normalization of Russia, we unpack how the Trump administration is attempting to reshape Europe in its own image—and why the economic weakness of the continent leaves it vulnerable to this new, aggressive Monroe Doctrine.Key Topics:The 2025 Strategy: A blueprint for far-right interventionism.Civilizational Rhetoric: How "Great Replacement" theory has entered US policy.Economic Imperialism: The drive to deregulate Europe for American corporations. The Future of NATO: Why the US is pivoting towards "patriotic" (i.e., far-right) allies.References:Cas Mudde's analysis in The GuardianOswald Spengler's The Decline of the WestRenaud Camus' The Great ReplacementExplaining History helps you understand the 20th Century through critical conversations and expert interviews. Martina Albini"In rivolta. Contributi In Rivolta· Sara Manfredi, CHEAP – The M Word· Claudia Bellante, RACCOMTAMI – Sussurri. BT and Sal dive headfirst into the Mets' offseason dilemma, sparked by a report that David Stearns is "reluctant" to give long-term deals to free-agent starting pitchers like Framber Valdez. Sal argues this philosophy is smart money, insisting the Mets should avoid overpaying for a non-ace like Valdez and instead aggressively target trade-and-extend options like Tarik Skubal. BT agrees Valdez isn't a true ace, but asks if the Mets can afford to be choosy after last year's rotation collapse. The debate heats up on the question of value: is a three-year deal for Michael King smarter than seven years for Valdez? The discussion expands to the future of the core, with Sal advocating for the emotional release of Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz if they demand reckless contracts, believing the Mets haven't won with them anyway. The hosts analyze Stearns' strategy and ask whether his dedication to player development will clash with the need to win now.

We'll get into how plural marriage went from a secret in Nauvoo to a public doctrine in Utah that put the church on a collision course with the U.S. government. SUMMARY: -Dating is harder today due to digital misrepresentation and added life complexities after 40 (widowhood, divorce, family-of-origin issues); real-life community is essential for discernment and support. -Prioritize meeting and observing potential partners in Christian community and everyday life to see a 360-degree picture (church involvement, service, friendships, parenting). -Four non-negotiables for compatibility: 1) a disciple of Jesus (vibrant, fruit-bearing faith), 2) adult readiness for marriage (responsibility, job, ownership), 3) humility and teachability, 4) generally aligned direction/calling. -Avoid “project” dating and rescuer roles; don't ignore red flags—marry a whole person as you bring your whole self, with ownership and healing underway. -Therapy can be valuable, but vet carefully; seek biblically grounded counseling and community oversight (e.g., Focus on the Family's vetted counselor network). -Lisa's book, The Dating Manifesto, urges intentional, biblically honoring dating, debunks rom-com myths, and equips singles to live with purpose and hope while navigating grief and unmet expectations. -Churches often center on families; singles can be part of the solution by serving, leading, and creating community rather than criticizing from the sidelines. -Treat early dates as exploratory conversations (not instant marital auditions); ask your own questions, keep emotional perspective, and ensure you can remain in community, in a healthy way, if it doesn't work out. -Discuss difficult topics (past relationships, addictions, pornography) as the relationship progresses; look for transparency, accountability, and community verification—humble, teachable responses are key. -Identity in Christ anchors dating and marriage; sexual integrity matters (avoid premarital sex and cohabitation), trust God's timing, and “wait well” by abiding in Christ, engaging community, and pursuing purpose with open hands. PODCAST INTRO: Dating today can feel like defusing a minefield—especially after 40, when life experience, grief, divorce, or long seasons of singleness shape how we show up. So my guest today, Lisa Anderson is an author, she is the director of Boundless at Focus on the Family, and hosts The Boundless Show podcast. Our conversation is based on a biblical viewpoint of dating. I know many think it too strict but if we're honest, God's ways always bring life, peace, joy, protection and that's a pretty good return on your investment. Lisa lays out some clear boundaries on dating and even sharing how to reflect on our own personal wholeness (meaning in what mental/emotional condition are we showing up, which can also help us know if we're even ready to be dating). She talks about how to find a mate who is healthy themselves and what does healthy even mean. Her point being, if you're dating after 40 then there's been a lot of life that has happened. That's a reality that we must fold into the process and so how can we discern between healthy, a hot mess, a fixer upper? I don't know about you but at my age the thought of a fixer upper is not appealing but Lisa takes the reality of how life takes it toll on us and she breaks down on exactly how to tell if this is someone who has taken responsibility and is moving forward, vs stagnate or a straight up red flag. Oh and then there's the challenges of digital dating. That seems to raise the bar on deception but in all fairness I've had friends who have used digital dating and they had good experiences. So don't be dismayed, Lisa says there's some good news. You don't need perfect conditions to move forward, you need community, clarity, and courage. And that's what Lisa delivers in this conversation. Real quick, Here are 2 of her dating suggestions that I think are solid: Start with real community One of the safer places is to meet someone in an environment where you spend time. Do you have a hobby, do you volunteer, where do you go to church & do you participate/serve at church? Ideally, you're looking for like minded people and they're going to be in the same places you are. Lisa says Community is the safest place to meet people and the wisest place to test new relationships. I thought that smart because you have an environment where people know the both of you. Date with purpose—but keep it simple I personally feel that dating is for marriage so I think that would put a lof of pressure….so Lisa was saying Think “exploratory conversation,” not instant compatibility quiz. It's just coffee. Ask good questions. Just relax and Lisa reminds us… Until there's a ring, you're a brother and sister in Christ—treat each other that way. I'll wrap up after this quick list. Here's 4 non-negotiables to begin with. In our conversation Lisa breaks these down even more with great insight, examples and wisdom. A disciple of Jesus: Not just church attendance—active pursuit of Christ, fruit of the Spirit, repentance, and engaged Christian community. In a position to marry: someone who has done or is doing their homework on their personal healing journey, shows responsibility, forgiveness, financial steadiness, follow-through. Humble and teachable: Open to counsel, not playing the blame game, and receptive to wise instruction. Generally headed in the same direction: Lisa looks at personal callings on their life and rhythms that can realistically unite for a stronger bond. This week on Crack the Book, we dive into a fascinating mix of political and philosophical texts from Ted Gioia's Immersive Humanities List: the U.S. Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Communist Manifesto, and Mary Wollstonecraft's A Vindication of the Rights of Women.I revisit the Declaration with fresh eyes—its sharp list of grievances and its insistence on mutual respect still sparkle with clarity. The Constitution, shorter than I expected, impressed me with how firmly it centers the individual while still designing a workable government. From there we move to Marx and Engels, whose Manifesto frames history as a struggle between classes and calls for radical redistribution of power. Finally, I explore Wollstonecraft's early feminist argument for women's education and its importance for society's progress.Next week: a palate-cleansing turn to Jane Austen. As part of our Hidden Killers 2025 Year in Review series, we're revisiting the most disturbing, politically charged, and psychologically revealing chapter in the Gilgo Beach murder investigation — one that now includes the alleged discovery of Rex Heuermann's “manifesto.” In this explosive special, Tony Brueski unpacks two powerful narratives unfolding in parallel: the discovery of a chilling document allegedly authored by Heuermann detailing methods for serial murder, and the growing skepticism of his ex-wife Asa Ellerup, who's beginning to wonder if her former husband might be a pawn in a much darker story of corruption and cover-ups. Investigators reportedly found a meticulously written digital file on Heuermann's computer — a step-by-step “how-to” guide for abducting, killing, dismembering, and disposing of victims while avoiding forensic detection. The alleged instructions include forensic countermeasures that mirror the real-world evidence found across multiple crime scenes, including Manorville and Ocean Parkway, where the remains of victims like Jessica Taylor and Valerie Mack were discovered. Prosecutors say this “manifesto” could become the smoking gun in proving premeditation, linking Heuermann to multiple unsolved murders, and showing a disturbing consciousness of guilt. But with a county marred by scandal — from former police chief James Burke's porn-and-violence scandal to DA Thomas Spota's obstruction conviction — the defense is asking: how much of this can be trusted? Enter Asa Ellerup. After watching Netflix's Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer, she isn't pushing wild conspiracies — but she is questioning the system. Her legal team is raising alarms about Suffolk County's history of corruption, claiming it taints everything from the DNA evidence (derived through a contested “whole genome sequencing” technique) to the investigative integrity itself. Could a broken system be capable of building a monster to hide its own sins? Or is this simply the final unraveling of one of America's most terrifying suburban nightmares?
