This week on Bad Dads Film Review, we head back to 1938 for Angels with Dirty Faces, Michael Curtiz's classic gangster drama starring James Cagney, Pat O'Brien, Humphrey Bogart and Ann Sheridan.It is very much an old-school Hollywood crime picture — street kids, reform school, crooked lawyers, corrupt city rackets, priests, gangsters, ledgers, shootouts and plenty of “what do you say, what do you know?” patter — but the dads are surprised by how modern and effective parts of it still feel.We start with young Rocky Sullivan and Jerry Connolly, two poor kids stealing from freight cars in the hope of making a few dollars. Jerry makes it over the fence. Rocky gets caught. That one moment sends their lives in opposite directions: Jerry becomes Father Connolly, a priest trying to help the local boys; Rocky becomes a famous gangster whose name alone is enough to make those same boys look at him like a hero.The film's central question is simple and still uncomfortable: what happens when the person the kids admire most is exactly the person they should not become?Rocky returns to the old neighbourhood after prison looking for the $100,000 he is owed by Frazier, played by Humphrey Bogart in full slippery villain mode. For this Warner Bros. 1935 episode we watched a couple of melodramas that show a side of the studio's 1930s output less familiar than its fast-talking gangster and proletarian dramas: The Right to Live (directed by William Keighley), a love triangle story set among the rich and ableist, starring Josephine Hutchinson and Colin Clive; and I Found Stella Parish, a spin on the Stella Dallas maternal sacrifice theme starring Kay Francis and directed by Mervyn LeRoy. We learn about the importance of Stella Parish to Warner Bros. and Francis, right before the relationship between studio and star was about to go sour, and argue that Francis deserves her place alongside Davis, Cagney, Muni and Robinson in discussions of Warner Bros. in the 1930s. It's thinking-person's blockbuster time at the movies. That means Christopher Nolan , who loves opening movies when people are all sweaty, has a new movie out. This time it's "The Odyssey" starring Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, the kid who plays Spiderman and that kid's girlfriend, maybe wife. Bill Bregoli and Bill McCuddy both went to see it and they'll both tell you what they think in less than 2 hours and 50 minutes which is how long the movie is. Neil Rosen tells us about a musical he saw called "Cagney" which is, surpise, about James Cagney. With the Fourth of July - and America's 250th birthday - only a few days away, our movie of the week is Yankee Doodle Dandy - the Oscar-winning musical biopic of George M. Cohan. James Cagney took home an Academy Award for his performance as the composer who gave us songs like "Over There" and "You're a Grand Old Flag." We'll hear both of Mr. Cagney's Suspense appearances - "Love's Lovely Counterfeit" (originally aired on CBS on January 17, 1948) and "No Escape" (originally aired on CBS on December 16, 1948). And he recreates his film role as The Lady Esther Screen Guild Theatre presents Yankee Doodle Dandy (originally aired on CBS on October 19, 1942).

Martin Kove is a veteran actor whose career spans more than five decades, with iconic roles including John Kreese in The Karate Kid franchise and Cobra Kai, Detective Victor Isbecki on Cagney & Lacey, and memorable appearances in films such as Rambo: First Blood Part II. His enduring portrayal of Kreese transformed him into one of pop culture's most recognizable screen villains and introduced his work to a new generation through the success of Cobra Kai. We have spent nearly a century trying to make another gangster movie this good and some could argue we haven't done it yet. Being released before the Hay's code allows this movie to really speak it's mind and it does. With its loud commentary about the state of the US, strong female characters, sex, openly gay characters and nuance this movie is the perfect reminder of what the code took from us. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Laury A Egan, author of the book Fair Haven. Laury is the author of fourteen books of fiction: Jack & I; The Black Leopard's Kiss & The Writer Remembers; The Psychologist's Shadow; The Firefly; Once, Upon an Island; Wave in D Minor; Doublecrossed; Turnabout; The Swimmer; The Ungodly Hour; A Bittersweet Tale; Fabulous! An Opera Buffa; The Outcast Oracle; and Jenny Kidd, with two titles forthcoming in 2025: Fair Haven and a new story/play collection, Contrary. Her stories have been collected in Fog and Other Stories, and her short fiction and poems have appeared in 85 literary journals and in multiple anthologies. Two full-length poetry volumes, Snow, Shadow, a Stranger and Beneath the Lion's Paw, were issued in limited edition, as were two chapbooks, Presence & Absence and The Sea & Beyond. Laury is also a fine arts photographer, a former book designer, and a reviewer for The New York Journal of Books. She lives on the northern coast of New Jersey.   In my book review, I stated Fair Haven by Laury A Egan is a murder mystery set in the small town of Fair Haven. The opening scene is a dead, naked woman in a hot tub. Each page after introduces us to the characters who may be the killer, as well as some supporting cast members like the police chief, his girl Friday, the crime photographer, and a beagle named Cagney.   And the possible killer? The list is lengthy and includes one of many lovers, her husband, a colleague, and a thief. Everything gets messier as we learn about the private lives of these individuals and realize that although the town seems quiet on the outside, the residents are embroiled in scandals ranging from hiding sexual orientations to financial fraud. Throw in some blackmail, attempted rape, and assault - and you have a real story!   This is the latest in Laury's works, and once again, I didn't figure out the killer until the very end. She's very good at giving you the answer but hiding it just enough to keep you guessing! I love any excuse to get together with Tricia and it was such a blast to do a deep dive into Ron's interview (Sorry, Ron— we're not over it!). We talk about how Ron built a collaborative set on Battlestar, getting booed at our first Comic-Con, the moment Tricia switched from dying her real hair to wearing a wig as Number Six, and so much more! Award-winning TV writer/producer turned novelist Georgia Jeffries spoke with me about why Cagney and Lacey was her film school, teaching screenwriting at USC, and the ghosts, grief, and grievance in her debut novel THE YOUNGER GIRL. Georgia Jeffries is the Emmy-nominated TV writer/producer who became the first individual female screenwriter to earn a Writers Guild Award for Episodic Drama for her work on the ground-breaking series Cagney & Lacey. Her debut is The Younger Girl: A Dark Labyrinth of Family Betrayal, based on a true crime. Welcome to Movie Mindset season 2! Will & Hesse look at two films somewhat bookending the career of the great James Cagney: Lloyd Bacon's Footlight Parade (1933) & Billy Wilder's One, Two, Three (1961). The first is a pre-code musical spectacular, allowing Cagney to show off his song and dance skills as a promoter of live “prologues” for movie houses, the later a cold war screwball comedy, together they show the insane range of Cagney across a career also notable for roles as gangsters and tough guys.
