Secrets in the Shadows: Unraveling a Small-Town Whodunit with Author Laury A Egan

My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Laury A Egan, author of the book Fair Haven. Laury is the author of fourteen books of fiction: Jack & I; The Black Leopard's Kiss & The Writer Remembers; The Psychologist's Shadow; The Firefly; Once, Upon an Island; Wave in D Minor; Doublecrossed; Turnabout; The Swimmer; The Ungodly Hour; A Bittersweet Tale; Fabulous! An Opera Buffa; The Outcast Oracle; and Jenny Kidd, with two titles forthcoming in 2025: Fair Haven and a new story/play collection, Contrary. Her stories have been collected in Fog and Other Stories, and her short fiction and poems have appeared in 85 literary journals and in multiple anthologies. Two full-length poetry volumes, Snow, Shadow, a Stranger and Beneath the Lion's Paw, were issued in limited edition, as were two chapbooks, Presence & Absence and The Sea & Beyond. Laury is also a fine arts photographer, a former book designer, and a reviewer for The New York Journal of Books. She lives on the northern coast of New Jersey.   In my book review, I stated Fair Haven by Laury A Egan is a murder mystery set in the small town of Fair Haven. The opening scene is a dead, naked woman in a hot tub. Each page after introduces us to the characters who may be the killer, as well as some supporting cast members like the police chief, his girl Friday, the crime photographer, and a beagle named Cagney.   And the possible killer? The list is lengthy and includes one of many lovers, her husband, a colleague, and a thief. Everything gets messier as we learn about the private lives of these individuals and realize that although the town seems quiet on the outside, the residents are embroiled in scandals ranging from hiding sexual orientations to financial fraud. Throw in some blackmail, attempted rape, and assault - and you have a real story!   This is the latest in Laury's works, and once again, I didn't figure out the killer until the very end. She's very good at giving you the answer but hiding it just enough to keep you guessing! If you love a good suspense/mystery, then you'll love this book.   Subscribe to Online for Authors to learn about more great books! https://www.youtube.com/@onlineforauthors?sub_confirmation=1   Join the Novels N Latte Book Club community to discuss this and other books with like-minded readers: https://www.facebook.com/groups/3576519880426290   You can follow Author Laury A Egan Website: https://www.lauryaegan.com/ FB: @laury.egan IG: @laurya.egan LinkedIn: @Laury A Egan   Purchase Fair Haven on Amazon: Ebook: https://amzn.to/3QWdixl   Teri M Brown, Author and Podcast Host: https://www.terimbrown.com FB: @TeriMBrownAuthor IG: @terimbrown_author X: @terimbrown1   Want to be a guest on Online for Authors? Happy Tuesday Everyone! Last week's episode with Battlestar Galactica creator Ron Moore was such a doozy, we had to call in re-enforcements to discuss it. And who better than my Battlestar Bestie Tricia Helfer? You know Tricia from her role as Number Six. She also played Charlotte Richards/Goddess on Lucifer and voiced Sarah Kerrigan in StarCraft II, among many other roles. I love any excuse to get together with Tricia and it was such a blast to do a deep dive into Ron's interview (Sorry, Ron— we're not over it!). We talk about how Ron built a collaborative set on Battlestar, getting booed at our first Comic-Con, the moment Tricia switched from dying her real hair to wearing a wig as Number Six, and so much more! Plus, Tricia and I brainstorm projects for our reunion— Cagney and Lacey, anyone?

Honored with multiple Writers Guild Awards, Golden Globes and the Humanitas Prize, her work in film has been praised by the Los Angeles Times as “standing ovation television.” The Los Angeles Review of Books described her short stories in the national anthologies, Odd Partners and The Last Resort, as “firecracker tales” and “domestic tragedy brilliantly segueing into comic farce.” She has also written biographical profiles for HuffPost and UC Press, including “The Last Gun of Tibercio Vasquez,” which can be viewed on the KCET-TV website, Artbound. Sin embargo, su relación no será así de simple, ya que Anne tiene, por lo menos, tanta personalidad y recursos como él, y mayor madurez. Weekly shoutout: New music at Washingtones Records! -- Hi there, Today I am delighted to be arts calling award-winning writer Georgia Jeffries! georgiajeffries.com ABOUT OUR GUEST: Georgia Jeffries is a writer of Emmy Award winning drama and critically acclaimed noir fiction. Born in the Illinois heartland, she worked as a journalist for American Film before writing and producing ground-breaking female-driven dramas, Cagney & Lacey, China Beach and Sisters. Her screenwriting career has been distinguished by extensive field research, from patrolling the mean streets of Rampart with the LAPD to crashing a Vegas bounty hunters' convention to reporting from a Walter Reed Army Hospital surgical bay, each investigation the basis for one of her many docudramas and series pilots for CBS, ABC, NBC, HBO and Showtime. A cum laude UCLA graduate, Jeffries is a professor at USC's School of Cinematic Arts where she created the first undergraduate screenwriting thesis program at an American university. THE YOUNGER GIRL, available from Mission Point Press on October 22nd! ABOUT THE YOUNGER GIRL: Based on a true crime, The Younger Girl, (Mission Point Press, October 22, 2024) a debut novel by trailblazing, award-winning writer Georgia Jeffries, combines fiction and supernatural suspense to unravel a thrilling tale of family betrayal and redemption. On March 2, 1933, Chicago tabloids trumpeted the death of 20-year-old "town belle" Aldine Younger: "HEIRESS SLAIN, MARRIED MAN HELD." The son of the mayor of Pontiac, a rich farming community south of Chicago, was convicted of manslaughter. But the dead girl's baby brother, Owen, grew up in a broken family and suspected his beloved sister's killing was orchestrated by their wealthy uncle. In 1996 Owen is an old man desperate to make peace with the tragedy of Aldine's death. His daughter, Joanna, takes her still grieving father back home to claim his share of his sister's lost inheritance. Together, they are caught in a dark labyrinth of family betrayal crossing three generations. Owen is found raving during a violent thunderstorm and now believes his daughter is his sister, Aldine, returning to him. Joanna races against time to save her father and unearths damning secrets that threaten her own life. The guilty will be exposed at the psychic bridge linking past, present and future. But at what cost? And who will survive the revelations? “True-crime stories are difficult, and far more so, when the true crime is in your own family. Georgia Jeffries's triumphant novel tells the story of her aunt Aldine Younger's killing in 1933—a violent death that has cast a long and complex shadow over the family, the community, and far beyond. Viewing these events through the lens of fiction, Jeffries deploys clear-eyed research and lucid, evocative prose to craft a novel that will haunt long after the book is closed.” —Howard Rodman, novelist/screenwriter Professor, USC School of Cinematic Arts Vice President, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Thanks for this wonderful conversation, Georgia! Well on today's bonus conversation on Back Porch Theology, we get to introduce y'all to a new friend that fits us like a glove called Sight and Sound Theatre. Sight and Sound – or S'squared, which is the cool nickname Alli and I have cooked up for them! – is an awesome organization with a purpose and passion for bringing stories to life that reveal the power of the Gospel. What began as one couple's prayer and a single slide projector fifty years ago has since grown into two live theater locations, an online streaming platform, and a feature film studio, reaching audiences around the world with stories from the pages of scripture and history. And since there's not much we love more here on BPT than telling stories about who God is and the faithful things He does, we fell pretty hard for these folks because showcasing His redemptive mercy is their primary motivation too! We can't wait for you to meet them, so please grab your Bible and a cup of something iced and caffeinated – I don't start drinking hot coffee until the weather starts cooling down because there's just something about holding a steaming beverage while my sweaty thighs are sticking to the seat that grieves me – and come prop your feet up on the porch with us.Daniel Live is playing now. It was a blast and over the last two years, the two podcasts have furthered a shared exploration of how women have been represented on television and the impact that representation has had on society as a whole and females, of all ages, in particular. Like Advanced TV Herstory, their show features interviews and analyzes the work of women both in front of and behind the camera. Our podcasts aim to help listeners understand how our culture shapes the television shows we watch and, in turn, how those shows shape our culture. Listen in on this engaging and informative look behind the scenes as we discuss the motivations, joys, and challenges of creating podcasts that highlight the contributions of women in television. 80s TV LADIES   Contacts Website – 80s TV Ladies - https://www.80stvladies.com/  Website – 134 West - https://134west.biz/  Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/80sTVLadies/ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/80stvladies/ YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/@80stvladies  Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/80sTVLadies   Awards 2024 Women in Podcasting, Nominee in Entertainment – VOTE at https://womeninpodcasting.net/80s-tv-ladies/     2024 Webby Award – Best Indie Podcast   2023 People's Choice Podcast Awards - Best Art, Best TV & Film, Best Female Hosted    MENTIONS   Podcast Episodes 80s TV Ladies (24 May 2023) – Advanced TV Herstory w/ Cynthia Bemis Abrams, Part One - https://www.80stvladies.com/episode/episode-201-welcome-to-season-2-advanced-tv-herstory-w-cynthia-bemis-abram-part-1   80s TV Ladies (31 May 2023) – Advanced TV Herstory w/ Cynthia Bemis Abrams, Part Two - https://www.80stvladies.com/episode/episode-202-advanced-tv-herstory-aw-cynthia-bemis-abrams-part-two   Wiser Than Me with Julia Louis-Dreyfus (11 Apr 2023) – Jane Fonda on Female Friendships - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/jane-fonda-on-female-friendships/id1678559416?i=1000608248297   Shows Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Cagney and Lacey, China Beach, Designing Women, Extraordinary Attorney Woo, Grey's Anatomy, Lou Grant, My So-Called Life, Murphy Brown, Remington Steele, and Scarecrow and Mrs. King    People Annie Potts, Barney Rosenzweig, Diane English, Eilish Zebrasky, Eugenie Ross-Leming, Geena Davis, Jean Smart, Juanita Bartlett, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Linda Bloodworth-Thomason, Melissa Roth, Neema Barnette, Sergio Perez, Sharon Gless, Shonda Rhimes, Stephanie Zimbalist, and Tyne Daly    Books  Backlash: The Undeclared War Against American Women by Susan Faludi - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backlash:_The_Undeclared_War_Against_American_Women    Lou Grant: The Making of TV's Top Newspaper Drama by Douglass K. From loving TikTok to enjoying cold readings playing “delightfully stupid” characters, Mary Testa is a talented actress who's “not on a stardom path and never will be”. She starts off where her acting journey began: choosing between law school and performing. Ultimately, she pursued the latter and eventually moved to New York in 1976, explaining why she just likes working on interesting things with people she loves. She discusses self-taping auditions during the pandemic, and that while she believes it's better to be in the room for auditions, she understands the preliminary role of self-tapes. Known for playing strong-willed characters, Mary reflects on her career as a character actress. She recalls asking Michael John LaChiusa to write a role for her as “a very stupid character”, challenging the usual type casting she gets. She also admits to loving cold readings, the spontaneity, and the challenges that come with them. Reflecting on her journey, she gets real as she talks about perfectionism, how insecurities can lead to tyrannical behavior, and why self-awareness and being comfortable in your own skin is important to keep you grounded. Mary Testa is an actress with a phenomenal career spanning almost 50 years, which includes 12 Broadway shows such as “Oklahoma!”, “42nd Street”, and “On the Town”, resulting in her three Tony Award nominations. Her TV and film credits beginning in 1979 include “Cagney & Lacey”, “Sex and the City”, “Whoopi”, “The Battery's Down”, “Eat, Pray, Love”, and “The Good Fight”, “The Blacklist”, and many, many more. She's been a part of the “Ratatouille”, the TikTok musical, and is an experienced voiceover artist. Janet tells several stories this week-and all are super fun!! (at least for me...when I dropped down into the pandemic several of the shows she worked on were balm for my soul during those first dark days...Remington Steele among others!) Janet tells of her magical sense of knowing and sensing what needed to be done to save the day on the set-as well as how as a child she wanted to be an actor...and how that dream wasn't to be (except at the last minute on an episode of Cagney and Lacey, but we will get to that later!) You'll feel like a fly on the wall as she speaks...and shares her memories of how she changed Hollywood forever for other women. She is a true trailblazer and someone who redefined what being female in the film industry meant! I am so grateful she agreed to tell her stories on the show. For Janet's website click here! For her delightful book, Snow White Bites Hollywood...then Hollywood Bit Back, click here! Janet's a fellow Pisces and so models fierceness and giving no "f's!" We need more women like her-clearing the way for the rest of us, so that we can shine! Remember dear ones, share the podcast with others this week-this is your weekly homework! Ha! Yes, I know I'm always asking for something, I'm like that bad penny that endlessly turns up! But I just think more people should know about this pod and the happiness it brings to the world! See you next week for more magic and a whole lotta miracles!

Tread Perilously's 450th podcast continues Ampersand Month with its first ever episode of Cagney & Lacey: "Ahead of the Game." Cagney & Lacey are called to the scene of a teenage basketball prodigy who dropped dead during a pick-up game. The cops all assume drug use, but his father insists he took no illicit substances. Suspicion moves to the basketball coach when it turns out the teen had steroids in his system. But all of this takes a back seat when Cagney's father gets drunk at the Emerald Ball and Lacey's house is broken into. Can she recover the candlestick her mother gave her? Erik and Justin cannot get over a special one-scene appearance by the great Brock Peters. Dan Lauria also makes drops in as a Queens-area cop. Stars Sharon Gless and Tyne Daly get high praise -- even if they take second fiddle in this episode to their loud and gruff lieutenant. Other notables include the actors who play the desk sergeant, Lacey's husband, and the suspect gym coach. Erik posits that the episode is low rated because nothing gets resolved while Justin praises that element of the script. 1980s scandals reappear and the pair once again wave the flag for The Shield as one of the best shows to ever appear on television.

"Juice" is a good film. It could have been greater if Tupac's character "Bishop" wasn't written to be so James Cagney and it's funny that the film ended in the fashion of "White Heat" but it's because of that film Tupac decided to go deep into the psyche of a man with practically nothing to lose at a young age growing up in early '90s New York. Harlem to be more exact. The film is about senior high schoolers trying to figure themselves out and it's root is basically the time and location they're living in. It's tough in the streets and if you want to make it, you might have to consider extreme measures. The film is not all violence, we are shown a window of Hip Hop which plays a deep role in the film. It's a character, it highlights a side of New York. You not only hear it, you see it in the fashion that is shown (great production design) & the music where society decides to vibe, and you also feel it as to how Bishop, Raheem, and Steel try to feign it as much as they can. But we all know, it shows us how music can be not only a way out, but it also has the power to fufill artistic purpose. I didn't mentioned this in the review, but Ernest Dickerson knows how to make a film and an effective one with his choice of shots that he knows it adds the right amount of tension and aloofness. Overall, what I saw is still ingredients for an iconic film such as "Juice".Three out of four tokes.#juicemovie #tupac #hiphop

White Heat, Fritz Lang's M, Black Cat, Sunset Blvd, Sea Wolf, and Psycho, though Psycho is 1960 neo-noir. These films are some of the first popular films to picture the pure chaotic evil of the joker archetype - evil for the sake of evil. We will focus on the psyche of the various villains in these films and their devilish anti-morality.
