We got a little too high this time, so it's an extra short episode today. A note from Rich: I really wanted to use this episode as a mini-retelling of my recent long-read at The Guardian, “A Hollywood ‘heir' made horrific abuse claims against four industry titans. How did he end up in prison?” But my intentions were at odds with my medium: Explaining a twisty story about an aspiring writer who sued powerful men in Hollywood for raping and blacklisting him and then, years later, was convicted for lying in front of the court in said lawsuit was a difficult thing to do coherently on this podcast, which finds us getting high and being unserious. The result was an extremely unfocused retelling of this story that Tracie had to salvage in editing. I think my spoken words do my written ones a disservice nonetheless in this week's episode, so please trust that the story in print is way wilder, more layered, and I think more consequential to the realities of MeToo's ideals than what is presented in this week's episode. If it sounds interesting to you at all in this form, I guarantee you that you will get way more out of the written piece. So please read it.To access video episodes, bonus episodes and our premium series WAWU—we're covering season one of The Comeback right now—check out our Patreon. The People Who Died in 2025 Christmas ornament is here! In this episode of The Modern Hairstylist Podcast, Hunter Donia revisits one of the most debated topics in the industry over the past few years: pre-booking. For decades, stylists were taught that pre-booking was the key to predictable income and a full schedule. But after the pandemic, many hairstylists began questioning whether it actually created real stability or just the illusion of it.Hunter originally challenged the traditional approach to pre-booking, arguing that it could create false security, more reschedules, and unnecessary pressure on both the stylist and the client. But recently, new patterns inside the Modern Hairstylist community and Mastermind have sparked a new question: is pre-booking worth reconsidering in today's industry? In this episode, Hunter breaks down why the conversation around pre-booking deserves a more nuanced look in 2026. Rather than treating it as a universal rule or rejecting it entirely, he explains how stylists can test whether it actually supports their specific business model, clientele, and demand patterns.Key Takeaways:
On today's Daily Detroit, Jer talks with chef Craig Lieckfelt, the culinary mind behind Guns and Butter, about his return to Detroit for a March residency at the Detroit Foundation Hotel and why this city keeps calling him home. They dig into the origins of the Guns and Butter pop-up concept, how it helped pioneer a now-standard model for chefs without big backing, and the economic idea behind the name itself. Craig shares his passion for Great Lakes cuisine, from Upper Peninsula walleye and whitefish caviar to the blue-collar Coney Island culture that shaped his food memories growing up in Michigan. He also talks about how time in New York, Tokyo, France, and the Bay Area deepened his craft while widening his sense of responsibility around food insecurity and community. The conversation gets into why Detroit's grit, expectations, and global contributions make it a uniquely demanding place to "make it," and why Craig feels he cooks his best food here. You'll also get a preview of what diners can expect from the Guns and Butter experience at the Detroit Foundation Hotel, from the stunning apparatus room and open kitchen to a chef residency program that continues to elevate Detroit's place on the culinary map. If you check out Guns and Butter at the Detroit Foundation Hotel this month, we'd love to hear what you think—drop us a line at dailydetroit@gmail.com or 313-789-3211.

A Note from James:Tony Hawk is one of the greatest athletes of all time—but what fascinates me most isn't just the tricks. It's the mindset.Tony didn't just become the best skateboarder in the world. He built an entire ecosystem around what he loved: competitions, companies, tours, sponsorships, and one of the most successful video game franchises ever created. What's interesting is that none of it was planned that way. It came from constant experimentation, falling—literally—and getting back up again. In this episode, Tony talks about the path to excellence, how he handled criticism and failure, the moment he finally landed the legendary 900 trick, and how skateboarding evolved from an underground subculture into a global industry.Episode Description:Tony Hawk didn't just change skateboarding—he helped transform it into a global cultural phenomenon. In this archival conversation, Tony shares the real story behind his career: learning to master fear, surviving the ups and downs of a niche sport, and eventually building a massive business empire around skateboarding. He explains how passion drove him through the lean years when skateboarding almost disappeared, why constant experimentation helped him stay at the top, and how a combination of timing, risk-taking, and creative control led to the success of the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater video game franchise. The conversation also explores the legendary moment when he landed the first successful 900, the importance of protecting your brand, and why mastery often comes from relentless curiosity rather than natural talent. What You'll Learn:Why pursuing passion—even during downturns—can create long-term successHow failure and repetition build elite skill in any disciplineWhy protecting your brand and intellectual control matters in businessHow the 900 trick became one of the most iconic moments in sports historyWhy continuous learning and experimentation are essential for staying relevantTimestamped Chapters:[00:02:00] The Physics of Skateboarding & Learning Through Failure[00:03:12] Introduction[00:03:38] Developing Air Awareness in Skateboarding[00:04:10] The First Time Going Airborne in a Pool[00:05:05] Learning How to Fall Safely[00:06:19] Aging, Risk & Walking Away from Mega Ramps[00:07:17] Skateboarding's Rebellious Origins[00:08:00] Creativity and Individual Style in Skate Culture[00:09:00] Advice for Pursuing Excellence[00:10:00] Learning Every Aspect of an Industry[00:11:35] Skateboarding's Collapse in the Early '90s[00:12:33] Becoming a Professional Skater[00:14:02] Mentorship from Stacy Peralta[00:15:13] Going Broke During Skateboarding's Down Years[00:16:29] Skating Parking Lot Shows for $100 a Day[00:17:31] The X Games and Skateboarding's Comeback[00:18:45] The Video Game That Changed Everything[00:19:31] When Tony Hawk's Pro Skater Became “The Game”[00:20:24] Lessons from Skateboarding Applied to Business[00:21:17] A Failed High-End Denim Business[00:22:43] Being Called a Sellout[00:24:00] Protecting Your Brand and Reputation[00:25:13] Creating Tony Hawk's Pro Skater[00:26:20] Designing the Game Mechanics[00:27:20] The Long Road to the 900[00:29:35] Landing the 900 at the X Games[00:31:08] Becoming Tony Hawk Inc.[00:32:21] The Importance of Total Immersion[00:33:29] Designing the Downward Spiral Ramp[00:35:24] Advice for Raising a Passionate Kid[00:38:12] Business Advice from Tony Hawk's Sister[00:40:29] Working with Family[00:43:04] Why Some Athletes Fade After Success[00:44:28] Clearing Up the 900 Controversy[00:48:00] The Hoverboard PrankAdditional Resources:Official Tony HawkTony Hawk's™ Pro Skater™ 3 + 4Bones Brigade: An AutobiographyRiley Hawk on InstagramSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Lisa Kudrow joins the podcast to revisit some of the most iconic and uncomfortable moments from The Comeback. Biologists estimate some 70 wolves are living in the state, and recently, a female wolf traveled into Los Angeles County, the first such sighting. But their comeback is not without controversy.
