Ro Skelton speaks to Emily Everett about her essay “Naow's Boutique,” which appears in The Common's fall issue. The essay explores Ro's time living and working in Dakar, where she formed a friendship in her neighborhood that eventually led to a sense of community, and then a community garden, and then a lifelong friendship. Ro also discusses how the essay fits into her focus as a writer – writing about gardening in unconventional spaces – and her memoir-in-progress on the subject, Easement. Ro Skelton is a writer and gardener from Scotland. She is currently working on her first book, Easement, a memoir about mental health, queer parenting, and radical acts of gardening. Her work has appeared in Four Way Review, Waxwing, New Ohio Review, and Ecotone. Previously a reporter in West Africa and a member of an ocean-going rescue crew, she now lives and gardens on the Isle of Mull. Read the essay in The Common here. White sand beaches, ancient stone circles, single-track roads, and ferries that sell out months ahead. Scotland's islands are pure magic when you plan them properly, and we've just come back from an Outer Hebrides road trip ready to share the route and the reality so you can plan your own Lewis and Harris adventure with confidence. We start with the nuts and bolts: driving north from the Midlands, choosing the scenic Glencoe route, staying overnight in Ullapool, and taking the CalMac ferry to Stornoway. Then we get into what actually makes or breaks a Scottish islands itinerary, booking ferries first, locking in accommodation early, and building in flexibility for the weather. We also cover food strategy, from stocking up in Stornoway for self-catering to why reservations matter, plus a few standout places we genuinely rate. From there it's all on-the-ground tips for Lewis and Harris: how to handle passing places on single-track roads, what to watch for with lambs and livestock, when petrol stations might be shut, and why bilingual Scottish Gaelic signs are part of the experience. We finish with the moments you should not miss, beaches like Uig Sands and Luskentyre, the Callanish Stones, blackhouses, and local crafts including Harris Tweed, before giving an honest take on Skye's crowds, parking, and overtourism.Subscribe so you catch Part 2 on Mull and Iona, and if you enjoyed this one, a quick review on your favourite podcast app means the world.

Scotland's Outer Hebrides don't forgive poor planning. Ferries sell out, accommodation is limited, and the roads demand your full attention. But get it right and you're rewarded with some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the world. In this episode Tracy has just returned from Lewis, Harris, and Skye and is sharing exactly how she put the trip together so you can do the same.We cover the full route from the Midlands up through Glencoe to Ullapool, what the CalMac ferry crossing to Stornoway is actually like, and why you absolutely book ferries before anything else. We also get into the realities of driving on single-track roads with passing places, livestock on the road, Sunday closures, and Scottish Gaelic road signs. Then it's the good stuff: the beaches of Lewis and Harris that genuinely stop you in your tracks, the Callanish Standing Stones, the blackhouses at Carloway, local Harris Tweed, and a couple of restaurants and places to stay that are worth going out of your way for. We finish with an honest conversation about Skye, what it's like now, whether it's still worth it, and how it compares to the quieter islands.Part 2 on Mull and Iona is coming soon. In this episode, we chat to Greig McBride, creator of 'Scotland Uncovered', who makes the case that rain and mist aren't obstacles to enjoying Scotland — they're part of what makes it extraordinary.Greig shares a practical one-week itinerary taking in Loch Lomond, Glencoe, the west coast, and the Cairngorms, alongside an honest conversation about the pressures of overtourism on places like Skye and the NC500 — and why quieter islands like Mull, Lewis and Harris, Orkney, and Shetland deserve far more love.He also explores small but meaningful ways to care for Scotland's nature, whether at home or travelling further afield, and encourages everyone to follow the Scottish Outdoor Access Code, treating the land — and the communities who depend on it — with the respect they deserve.Whether you're planning your first trip or your fiftieth, this episode is a reminder that Scotland rewards those who take the time to explore it thoughtfully.

Brandon Mull was a guest on this podcast a few years ago in episode #251. We met when he was the Toastmaster at The Life, the Universe, and Everything Conference, after which he sent me a copy of “Fablehaven,” which became the topic of our first interview. This interview is about his newest release, “Guardians: Forbidden Mountain,” an epic adventure fantasy that can be enjoyed by YA as well as adult readers. He normally takes 6 months to write a novel, but this one took 2 ½ years due to the story's depth—and the fact that it is the first of a three-novel series. There are two hero journeys that gradually weave into each other. Mako Boughbreaker is along one path, and Arden is on the other side of the empire, walking her path. The book deftly addresses people's spirituality while weaving in the idea that one does have the choice to do the right thing—and that one's actions have consequences, good or bad —which is important. Possibly even more so these days. Learn more at brandonmull.com/

We all have those destinations we think we know. And then we get there and they completely win us over. In this episode, I'm sharing a handful of places that surprised me in the very best way. These are spots around Europe that went beyond my expectations and left a bigger impression than I ever imagined.I'm talking about everything from the wild, rugged beauty of Ireland's west coast to the storybook charm of York in England. And yes, even Paris made this list because sometimes the most iconic places still manage to surprise you. There are mountain regions that stole my heart, quieter corners that felt more magical than expected, and a few destinations that simply stayed with me long after I left. This is a personal look at expectations vs. reality — and how some of the best travel moments happen when a place catches you off guard. It's also a reminder to leave a little room for the unexpected when you're planning your own European adventure. So now I'm curious… what are the places that surprised you in the best possible way?Send me a note at Lynne@WanderYourWay.comIn this episode:2:15: Intro7:06: Ireland: County Donegal & West Cork11:19: Paris, France14:27: South Tyrol, Italy17:20: Slovenia20:24: Isle of Mull, Scotland23:51: York, England27:02: Krün, Germany30:25: Peak District, England33:31: Normandy, France36:49: St Andrews, Scotland41:42: Recap42:20: Wrapping it upImportant links:County Dongel • IrelandWest Cork • IrelandRainbow Weather: Exploring Beautiful West Cork Ireland with Kat KochThe Best Things To Do in Paris in 4 DaysMy Joyful Love Affair with the Beautiful and Diverse South Tyrol ItalySlovenia • An OverviewIsle of Mull • ScotlandYork • EnglandBlack Forest & Bavaria • GermanyDiscovering the Diverse and Beautiful Peak District EnglandExploring Beautiful Normandy, France: Going Beyond the D-Day BeachesExploring St Andrews • Scotland with Bo FraserWander Your WayWander Your Way AdventuresWander Your Way ResourcesOofos ★ Support this podcast ★

Since the declaration of a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip on 10 October 2025, the United Nations' main concern has been — and remains — the urgent scaling up of humanitarian aid.And while the long-awaited reopening of the Rafah crossing at the start of this month raised hopes, it has also been marked by delays and reports of mistreatment of Palestinians, according to aid organizations, with no significant improvement in the overall humanitarian situation. For more details, UN News's Nancy Sarkis spoke to Gaza aid veteran Olga Cherevko, spokesperson for the UN aid coordination office, OCHA.

In episode 329 of The Just Checking In Podcast we checked in with Richard Campion. Richard is a Devon-based professional photographer, who specialises in wildlife photography. We came across his work through great friend of the pod and all-round legend William Jones-Warner who recently did a collaborative project with Richard capturing wild otters in the Isle of Mull in Scotland. Richard grew up in Jersey originally and got into photography relatively late. It started when he moved to London in 2015 and he was in a corporate job in The City he deeply disliked. During this difficult period where he experienced symptoms of depression and quite severe anxiety, Richard would try and combat it by going for short walks and looking for wildlife. That summer, his sister visited him and bought him his very first camera, and the rest is history. He began capturing the wildlife he saw on those walks, building that love of nature and animals, and he eventually got himself out of that state of mind. Now, he has built his photography career to the point he can do it for his full-time career. He offers workshops and photography tours to clients, including the chance to see beavers, seals, brown hare and red deer. In this episode we discuss this journey, his career highlights so far, working with Will and their plans for a wildlife podcast in 2026. For Richard's mental health journey, we discuss his diagnoses of OCD and ADHD. He was diagnosed with OCD and this manifested in rituals, health OCD and intrusive thoughts which his brain told him he needed to do in order to protect his mum and sisters and prevent them from dying. We discuss his journey of self-awareness, acceptance and ownership of both these diagnoses, the tools he's used to manage them from childhood to adulthood, and where the conversation is for people living with OCD now, vs when he was a child in the 1990s. As always, #itsokaytovent You can find out more about Richard's work here: https://www.richardcampionphotography.com/ You can follow him on social media below: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mywildlifeimages/ Support Us: Patreon: www.patreon.com/venthelpuk PayPal: paypal.me/freddiec1994?country.x=GB&locale.x=en_GB Merchandise: www.redbubble.com/people/VentUK/shop Music: @patawawa - Strange: www.youtube.com/watch?v=d70wfeJSEvk

This episode is a repost of episode 75 of What We Do in the Winter, an oral history podcast about the people of Mull, Iona, Ulva, Gometra and Little Colonsay. It features a conversation with Banjo and Ro Beale to coincide with the release of Banjo and Ro's Grand Island Hotel on BBC iplayer. Originally released for Christmas 2023 it features some seasonal greetings and a wee bit of context about the podcast. Wishing the boys all the very best with their adventure on Ulva, it's a properly dramatic watch, I've only seen one episode and have no idea how it's all going to pan out. Compulsive viewing! Ro is one of the masterminds behind the distillery at Isle of Mull Cheese, and Banjo is a celebrated interior designer, whose work you may have seen in Interior Design Masters, his own series Designing the Hebrides and whose book Wild Isle Style is available from all good bookshops. We cover so many topics in this episode as Banjo and Ro talk about their lives and adventures. To donate to Banjo and Ro's work in Nepal, please drop a line to: ahoy@banjobeale.co.uk Photo of Banjo & Ro by Lisa McKenna For more information please see the episode links on whatwedointhewinter.com Thanks for listening!

Skateboarder and birder Dave Mull remembers the first time he heard a Steller's Jay imitating a Red-tailed Hawk. “These Steller's Jays were pretending to be something they were not, kind of tricking the world,” he says. It got him into the mindset that he could attempt a terrifying new skateboard trick called the “stump jump.”Music in today's episode is by Dave Mull, inspired by the endemic species on Santa Cruz Island, CA.More info and transcript at BirdNote.org.Want more BirdNote? This episode uncovers the unique and beautiful story behind Nottingham Forest's pre-match anthem, Paul McCartney's wistful Scottish ballad, "Mull of Kintyre." We trace the song's journey from a cultural hit to its permanent home on the banks of the River Trent, where fans ingeniously adapted the lyrics to celebrate their miracle run under the legendary Brian Clough. We look at how this bagpipe-driven tune became the sacred soundtrack to Forest's back-to-back European Cup victories, and how it transformed into an unwavering promise of identity during years of adversity. Discover why this Scottish folk song is a living heirloom, connecting Forest's golden age legends—like Viv Anderson and John Robertson—to the current generation of fans. Hey there! It's Michael here — and welcome back to another Happy English, Friday Phrasal Verb. Every Friday, I'll be here with a quick, one-point English lesson to help you learn one new phrasal verb and sound more natural when you speak.Last week we looked at toy with, which means to consider something not so seriously. Today's phrasal verb is the opposite of that: mull over. When you mull something over, it means you think about it carefully before making a decision. You're not rushing. You're taking your time to consider the options. Like, my buddy David got a job offer in another city. He said he needs to mull it over before he gives them his answer. Last week, Emily was thinking about buying a new car, but she told me she wanted to mull it over for a few days first. And me? I've been mulling over the idea of starting a new project for my students — but I want to be sure it's the right time. By the way, notice the pronunciation: mull over...muh-lover. We link the L at the end of mull with over: muh-lover. Title: Fixing the Broken Pieces with Ian Morgan Cron Description: Everyone is an addict. Mr. Rogers…The Dali Lama… Michelle Obama! Mull that idea over for a minute and when you're done being outraged like we were, join us for this enthralling conversation with one of our favorite repeat guests on For the Love – author, psychotherapist, and Episcopal priest, Ian Morgan Cron. Today, we're talking to him about his new book, The Fix: How the Twelve Steps Offer a Surprising Path of Transformation for the Well-Adjusted, the Down-and-Out, and Everyone In Between. People pleasing, the need to be right, being a compulsive helper, workaholism, being a knowledge junkie, perfectionism, holding on to our past suffering – these are all forms of addiction. The simple truth is, we each resort to our own methods of dealing with the harder aspects of life. For some, that solution means turning to a substance to numb our pain, which is how we traditionally think of addiction. For others, there are behaviors we employ to manipulate what we are feeling. And that's where the rest of us fall into the sticky trap. Ian, who also hosts the wildly popular Typology podcast exploring the mystery of the human personality, teaches us how the Twelve Steps are a trusted tool for anyone seeking to move beyond self-help to a more profound sense of awakening. And, in a new segment called “To My Younger Self”, Jen and Amy share some deeply personal experiences that, for Amy, helped change her relationships and, for Jen, helped change how she viewed herself. Thought-provoking Quotes: “People don't have one addiction; people are poly-addicted. They're seething cauldrons of addiction.” – Ian Morgan Cron “All human beings have a natural and innate hunger for union with the divine. The problem is when we go in search of counterfeit experiences of the divine that lead to disappointment, disillusionment and disaster.” – Ian Morgan Cron “Most Twelve Steps meetings happen in church or synagogue basements, after hours. And I wondered, does anyone upstairs know about the miracles that are going on downstairs? And why can't we release what's happening down here so that people up there can take advantage of it?” – Ian Morgan Cron “When you can admit powerlessness, it's a relief that it's not on you anymore.” – Ian Morgan Cron “When you frame an addiction as a solution to a problem, albeit an inadequate one, what follows is compassion, not judgment or condemnation.” – Ian Morgan Cron Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Five Calls app – https://5calls.org/ I Poop on Fascists Sticker - https://bit.ly/4gWiFHx The Fix: How the Twelve Steps Offer a Surprising Path of Transformation for the Well-Adjusted, the Down-and-Out, and Everyone In Between by Ian Morgan Cron - https://amzn.to/3Xgx6PK The Fix Workbook: How the Twelve Steps Offer a Surprising Path of Transformation for the Well-Adjusted, the Down-and-Out, and Everyone in Between by Ian Morgan Cron - https://amzn.to/3DiTReV How to Mitigate Stress Based on Your Personality – FREE DOWNLOAD - https://typologyinstitute.com/stress The Typology Institute Enneagram Assessment by Ian Morgan Cron - https://typologyinstitute.com/assessment Typology Podcast - https://www.typologypodcast.com/ The Road Back to You: An Enneagram Journey to Self-Discovery by Ian Morgan Cron - https://amzn.to/3QCG1qI Guest's Links: Ian's website - https://ianmorgancron.com/ Ian's Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/ianmorgancron Ian's Twitter - https://x.com/ianmorgancron Ian's Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/IanMorganCron/ Ian's Youtube - https://www.youtube.com/@imcron Ian's Podcast - https://www.typologypodcast.com/ Connect with Jen!
