In this episode, Roger Robinson is our guest and talks about teaching, learning and creativity from his experience as a writer (A Portable Paradise and Home Is Not A Place) and musician. For him, teaching is a performative act: good teachers read the space like performers, reacting to energy, presence and uncertainty in the group. His neurodiverse perception has taught him to convey content in a multisensory, systematic and context-based way. For him, it is not the end product that is decisive, but the process - the fun, the realisation and independent further thinking.

Tens of millions of Americans are unwittingly investing in Chinese companies involved in military weapon production, surveillance technologies, and egregious human rights abuses, says former Reagan adviser Roger Robinson.Through a complex web of investment vehicles and regulatory loopholes, Americans are pouring trillions of dollars into companies that directly threaten American national security, including ones blacklisted by the U.S. government—often without even knowing. Chinese companies often make up the bulk of index funds like emerging markets funds that many Americans invest in.“You have ... companies that are responsible for manufacturing China's most advanced weapon systems,” Robinson says. “We're funding, in some ways, our own demise.”During the Reagan administration, Robinson served as senior director of international economic affairs at the National Security Council, where he played a linchpin role in Reagan's economic strategy against the Soviet Union. He's the co-founder of the Prague Security Studies Institute.Views expressed in this video are opinions of the host and the guest, and do not necessarily reflect the views of The Epoch Times.

President Trump recently unveiled one of his most important initiatives called the “America First Investment Policy.” It's supposed to end Wall Street's insane practice of using U.S. retail investors' retirement and other funds to help the Chinese Communist Party threaten our people – and repress those of China. Yesterday, Ronald Reagan's financial warfare expert, Roger Robinson, told Maria Bartiromo's audience that J.P. Morgan, Bank of America, Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs have doubled down.  They intend shortly to use our money to raise at least $7 billion for a Chinese electric battery manufacturer known as CATL. The Defense Department says the company supports our mortal enemy's military. And five key legislators – one of whom is now Secretary of State Marco Rubio – have denounced CATL for using slave labor. President Trump, keep Wall Street from putting China First, again: Say “No” to CATL. This is Frank Gaffney.

Gardens, balloons, parties and whales feature in this week's cabaret of the word. Ian's guests include Toby Litt, Roger Robinson, Hannah Silva and Caleb Femi.Novelist, poet and librettist Toby Litt has wrestled Ian, written stories backwards, and been limited to a single verb, in previous Verb commissions. This week he has to write something surreal for us, and then write something even more surreal by the end of the show - whilst blowing up two balloons. Toby is also mine of writing advice and genre-challenging playfulness in his novels, in his book 'A Writer's Diary' and in his substack.Roger Robinson's 'A Portable Paradise' won the T.S.Eliot Prize and there's no one better placed to unpick a poem and explain its most extraordinary lines for The Verb. He shows us how language really works on this week's show, as he does in his books 'On Poetry' and 'On Creativity'. Caleb Femi is an award-winning poet and film-maker. He has said he wants to be a merchant of joy, and there's lots of joy in his celebration of the true meaning of parties in his new collection 'The Wickedest'. Caleb shares new poems with Ian.Hannah Silva is a poet who truly understands how sound can let us into meaning. She performs a brand new commission for The Verb on the balloon - and asks Ian and his guests to play keepy-uppy during the show. Her latest book is 'My Child, the Algorithm' .

The appeal of 'the road less travelled by', Emily Brontë as self-help guru, a new way to look at Little Red Riding Hood and the 'little miracles' we might notice when we care for the elderly; Ian McMillan celebrates poems that explore all of these ideas with his guests, the poets Len Pennie, Malika Booker, Kate Fox, and Michael Symmons Roberts.Michael Symmons Roberts' poetry collections include 'Drysalter', 'Mancunia' and 'Ransom'. This week Michael explores Robert Frost's poem 'The Road not Taken' and sheds light on the strange power of the 'neon' line in the poem (a memorable line that takes the poem to another level) 'I took the road less travelled by'.Kate Fox is a stand up poet, spoken word artist and broadcaster, her latest poetry collection is 'Bigger on the Inside'. Kate has written a new poem for The Verb in which Emily Brontë advises us that most of our thoughts 'are nowt but hill fog' and that problems can be solved by 'a walk or a big dog', or 'a walk with a big dog'.Malika Booker is the only poet to have won The Forward Prize for best single poem twice - she reads one of those winning poems, 'The Little Miracles' for The Verb. Malika founded the groundbreaking poetry workshop 'Malika's Kitchen' with Roger Robinson. Her books include 'Pepper Seed' and her poetry can be found in the 'Penguin Modern Poets' series.Len Pennie's collection 'Poyums' is a best-seller, and explores domestic violence and misogyny with energy, wit and inventive rhyme, It's written in a mixture of Scots and English. Len has a huge following on social media, partly down to her celebration of a 'Scots word of the Day'. For The Verb, she reads a poem about telling the story of a relationship in your own words, and considers the influence of Robert Burns.

Kia ora e te whānau! This week on the podcast Eugene speaks to returning champion and one of the most impressive human beings we've had the pleasure of speaking with, the one and only Roger Robinson. Roger is an age group world champion runner, an emeritus professor at Victoria University where he was in the English Department, he is a world-leading writer on running, a delightful, engaging teller of stories and commentator, and shares his time between Wellington and New York, with his wife, the celebrated women's running pioneer, Kathrine Switzer. He has a new book out titled “Running Throughout Time: The Greatest Running Stories Ever Told”. The book is full of fascinating research and discoveries, from chapters about Atlanta, the heroic woman runner of ancient Greece, to Allison Roe, the New Zealander who won the New York Marathon. In his research, Roger arguably discovered the true roots of trail running in a ditch, and most definitely busts some myths about some of our sport's most famous stories. Roger was a guest on DCR episode 37 which you should have a listen to if you missed it, with Kathrine on DCR episode 45. Also on show, we celebrate Riverhead Rampage's 10th year, catch up with Dr Inia Raumati about his quest to run 8 ultras on 8 continents, and bring you a Kiwi for Greatest Run Ever – as in, an actual Kiwi, Best Enjoyed Running.Roger Robinson Home Running Through Time: The Greatest Running Stories Ever Told NickrunsAustralia.org.nz Inia Raumati Kia Mau Kia Ora CurranzSCOTT Running Julbo Eyewear UltrAspireIrunfarDirt Church Radio on InstagramDirt Church Radio on Twitter Dirt Church Radio on Facebook CieleFurther Faster New ZealandSit Back and Enjoy!Music by Andrew McDowall, Digicake

The conversation is in English, after a short introduction in Swedish.

President Biden says he has decided on a response to the Iranian-enabled attack that killed and wounded 30 American troops in Jordan. So far, he's done nothing, but based upon his pathetic performance to date, the mullahs' surrogates may suffer inconsequential retaliation.  Financial warfare expert Roger Robinson, who helped Ronald Reagan take down the Soviet Union by restricting its cash-flow, has a far better idea: Do the same to the Tehran regime's principal sponsor by ending U.S. investors' funding of Communist Chinese companies doing business with Iran. As Mr. Robinson discussed with Maria Bartiromo yesterday, his Prague Security Studies Institute found that major U.S. firms like Vanguard, State Street and BlackRock are plowing billions of dollars from American pension funds and other investment vehicles into propping up Iran's military, energy sector and surveillance state.  We must stop underwriting our enemies now. Writer and photographer Johny Pitts captures everyday experiences from Black communities around the British coast, bringing together the sights, sounds, and sofas shared from Liverpool to London, in his touring installation, Home is Not a Place. In 2021, Johny Pitts and the poet Roger Robinson set off on a journey clockwise around the British coast, to answer the question: 'What is Black Britain?' Their collaboration, Home is Not is Place, captures contemporary, everyday experiences of Blackness between Edinburgh and Belfast, Liverpool and Tilbury, where the Empire Windrush docked in 1948. Setting out from London, the multidisciplinary artist challenges the ‘Brixtonisation' of Black experiences, and binary media representations of Black excellence, or criminality. Johny shares stories of migration, how Brexit and COVID changed his perceptions of local environments, and archive albums from his own childhood in multicultural, working-class Sheffield. Flicking through shots of Yorkshire puddings and Mount Fuji, we find his travels-past in 1980s bubble-era Japan. And in his Living Room, we sit down to discuss Afropean, inspirations like James Baldwin, Paul Gilroy, and Caryl Phillips, plus his sister Chantal's pirate radio playlists, and the role of family and community in his practice. Johny Pitts: Home is Not a Place runs at The Photographers' Gallery in London until 24 September 2023. Join the Gallery this Thursday (7 September), and next, for special exhibition tours and artist talks. For more, you can read my article in gowithYamo. A Select House Committee on the Chinese Communist Party has announced a significant breakthrough in the CCP's decades-long “unrestricted warfare” against America. The panel will investigate two companies that help our mortal enemy weaponize U.S. investors' money against them – and the rest of our country. Following important testimony recently by our colleague, Roger Robinson, the Committee's bipartisan leadership declared that: “As a direct result of decisions made by [BlackRock and MSCI] these Americans are now unwittingly funding PRC companies that develop and build weapons for the People's Liberation Army…exacerbating an already significant national security threat and undermining American values.” Our Committee on the Present Danger: China has long called for an end to such enabling of history's greatest “existential threat to freedom” and the firing of those responsible among the CCP-captured elites, especially BlackRock's Larry Fink. Let it begin. This is Frank Gaffney.

On May 17th, the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party threat held what may prove to be the most important congressional hearing in a generation. It featured testimony from three men who have made history.  Each addressed the unrestricted warfare the CCP has long waged against us. Trump advisor Robert Lighthizer described Beijing's devastating economic and unfair trade practices. Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt warned of Chinese efforts to steal and dominate militarily relevant technologies. But it was my friend Roger Robinson – who helped Ronald Reagan take down the Soviet Union, the last totalitarian regime that sought our destruction – who really broke the code. He revealed the invaluable help the Chinese Communists have gotten from Wall Street and how, if we stop underwriting our mortal enemy, we just may succeed in defeating the CCP, too, without fighting.    Let's roll! Running Through Time aims to tell key stories about the history and evolution of running. A comprehensive book of every story that makes up running history would be massive, so this book tries to pick stories that were not told as often or not told correctly. It starts with the story of the marathon and how it became the 42.2km distance we know today, and ends with Alison Roe from New Zealand and her inspiring but short professional running career. All the stories chosen in this book have influenced how we experience our sport today, including the inclusion of women.Roger Robinson is a true fan of the sport of running. He was born in England but has moved to several countries throughout his life to run and even ended up marrying another famous runner! Roger was an elite runner in the 1960's and 1970's running cross country worlds on several occasions including for the English team in 1966, and the New Zealand team in 1977. He then went on to be a high-level master's athlete and running a master record for the marathon in Vancouver in 1981. Of course, you are all interested in knowing that he ran a time of 2:18:44. He also set other records including an over 50 marathon record. Roger got a PHD in literature from Cambridge University; he went on to a lectureship at the University of Canterbury, was a professor of English at the University of Wellington, was an announcer at big running events, and became a great running writer. He has authored and co-authored several other books including: Running in Literature, and 26.2 Marathon Stories with Katherine Switzer (his wife). Since the last time we spoke with Roger he was busy, not just writing this book, but also with his own running: He broke the 80+ Wellington record for the 5000m in a time of 26:45.15 in November 2021.If you would like to follow Roger's work, he writes for Runner's World and the Podium Runner website: https://www.podiumrunner.com If you are interested in getting a copy of Running Throughout Time, it is available on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Running-Throughout-Time-Robinson/dp/1782552413     Big thank you to the publisher, Meyer and Meyer Sport, for providing a review copy of the book, and to author, Roger Robinson, for speaking with us. Roger Robinson helped Ronald Reagan defeat the Soviet Union, the last totalitarian Communist regime that threatened to destroy America. Central to that accomplishment was a comprehensive effort to cut off the Kremlin's cash flow from Western sources. Today, Mr. Robinson is warning about what he says may be “the largest financial scandal in world history.” That would be the  underwriting from Wall Street that's propping up an even greater threat: the Chinese Communist Party. He estimates between $3-6 trillion has been invested to date by U.S. sources in companies owned or controlled by the CCP. What's most scandalous is that, thanks to financiers like BlackRock's Larry Fink, those sources include scores of millions of mostly unwitting American investors, among them now U.S. government and military personnel. Join a webinar today at PresentDangerChina.org to learn how this enemy can be financially defeated, too. This is Frank Gaffney.

The Federal Retirement Thrift Investment Board is once again planning to allow federal employees' to invest their retirement savings into companies controlled by the Chinese Communist Party. The FRTIB has decided to ignore directives by both President Trump - and President Biden - as well as strong opposition on Capitol Hill, to open a ‘Mutual Fund Window' in June which would make available to Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) participants the opportunity to invest up to 25% of their savings in some 5,000 mutual funds. The problem? These funds would include businesses involved in the Chinese government's military, espionage, human rights abuses, and its aggressive industrial policy designed to undermine U.S. industry. Why, after all we've learned about China's extensive aims at global domination, does the FRTIB plan to proceed with this? China is no longer simply an economic competitor, but rather an aggressive adversary. The FRTIB public statements say it's “too much work” to winnow out CCP controlled or influenced companies. But are there deeper purposes at work? Joining me to talk about this alarming development is Frank Gaffney, Host of Securing America with Frank Gaffney, Founder and Executive Chairman of the Center for Security Policy, and Vice Chairman of the Committee for Present Danger: China. And Roger Robinson former Senior Director of International Economic Affairs at the Reagan National Security Council and Chairman of the Congressional US-China Economic and Security Review Commission.

It took athletes willing to push their bodies to the limit, defy the conventions of the day and standardize racecourses to help running reach its stride. Now with over a million people running marathons each year, researchers, athletic wear companies and elite runners are looking for new ways to break records and run longer and faster with fewer injuries.
