In this encore episode of Building Better Managers, Wendy engages with Julie Winkle Giulioni, a renowned expert in career development. They discuss the evolution of career conversations, the importance of psychological safety, and the impact of remote work on employee growth. Julie emphasizes the need for continuous dialogue about career development rather than relying on annual reviews. The conversation also explores the role of AI in enhancing career growth while highlighting the irreplaceable value of human interaction. As the workplace continues to evolve, leaders must adapt their strategies to foster an environment where employees feel valued and supported in their career journeys. Key takeaways: Career development is essential for employee engagement and retention. Conversations about career growth should happen regularly, not just annually. Psychological safety is crucial for open and honest career conversations. Leaders should focus on asking questions rather than providing answers. Remote work requires more intentionality in career development efforts. Recognizing and appreciating employees' strengths fosters motivation. AI can support career development but cannot replace human interaction. Creating equitable development opportunities is vital in a hybrid work environment. Leaders should confront their proximity bias to ensure fair development. The future of career development will focus on self-driven growth and diverse experiences. Happy New Year (and Happy Reading) from The Daily Poem!Born in Amherst, Massachusetts, to academic Calvinist parents, poet, author, and Native American rights activist Helen Hunt Jackson (born Helen Maria Fiske) was orphaned as a child and raised by her aunt. Jackson was sent to private schools and formed a lasting childhood friendship with Emily Dickinson. At the age of 21, Jackson married Lieutenant Edward Bissell Hunt and together they had two sons. Jackson began writing poetry only after the early deaths of her husband and both sons.Jackson published five collections of poetry, including Verses (1870) and Easter Bells (1884), as well as children's literature and travel books, often using the pseudonyms “H.H.,” “Rip van Winkle,” or “Saxe Holm.” Frequently in poor health, she moved to Colorado on her physician's recommendation and married William Sharpless Jackson there in 1875.Moved by an 1879 speech given by Chief Standing Bear, Jackson wrote A Century of Dishonor (1881), an exposé of the rampant crimes against Native Americans, which led to the founding of the Indian Rights Association. In 1884 she published Ramona, a fictionalized account of the plight of Southern California's dispossessed Mission Indians, inspired by Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin.Jackson was inducted into the Colorado Women's Hall of Fame in 1985.-bio via Poetry Foundation Get full access to The Daily Poem Podcast at dailypoempod.substack.com/subscribe

Today, we're diving into the charming and unexpectedly profound world of Marcel the Shell With Shoes On, a delightful film that started from humble beginnings as a series of popular YouTube shorts. Directed by Dean Fleischer-Camp and featuring the voice talent of Jenny Slate, this film brings a tiny shell named Marcel to life in a big way. Marcel the Shell With Shoes On follows the daily adventures of Marcel, a tiny, one-eyed shell with a pair of pink shoes, living an introspective life in a vast, seemingly ordinary human-sized world. The film is shot in a pseudo-documentary style, capturing Marcel's observations and interactions with the world around him, turning mundane moments into profound reflections on life.Marcel's life is filled with quirky and ingenious ways to navigate his oversized surroundings—from using honey as shampoo to skating on dust. However, the heart of the story unfolds when Marcel begins a quest to reunite with his long-lost shell family, turning his journey into an exploration of community, belonging, and the essence of home.At its core, Marcel the Shell With Shoes On is about exploration—not just of physical spaces but also of internal landscapes. Marcel's journey is a metaphor for the search for identity and the meaning of home. The film beautifully captures how small experiences can have a significant impact on our understanding of the world and ourselves.A Dad's Take This film is perfect for a family movie night, especially for those with young children. It offers a blend of humor, adventure, and life lessons that can spark meaningful family discussions about resilience, creativity, and the importance of community. For anyone who loves innovative storytelling and animation, Marcel the Shell With Shoes On is a must-watch. It's a film that proves you don't need epic landscapes or dramatic action to tell a compelling story; sometimes, a small shell with a big heart is all it takes. So, join us as we explore the tiny yet vast world of Marcel, where every little detail offers a window into a larger narrative. Whether you're young or just young at heart, Marcel's journey is sure to inspire and captivate.
