The hits and misses keep coming on SURFACE NOISE: BONUS TRAX where the panel discusses where they find the "vinyl inspiration" to discover new music through collecting records. This can be a simple as collecting any release connected to a beloved artist or band to round out a complete discography, to deep diving producers, musicians, or other connective tissue from a favorite release, or simply discovering new genres, artists, or works from a song, a story, or a video that keeps the road to discovery fun and fruitful with new knowledge exploration to explore. Along those lines, The Grooveseeker shares a new band - the only two deejays in Italy, apparently - called Mind Enterprises, followed by Concert Buddie sharing a recent guilty pleasure along those lines (Dabeull). Sprinkle in some trusty VMP detective work and a tribute to the somewhat legendary Jennifer Love Hewitt and this program calls it a night. Got records? We do. And these BONUS TRAX keep them spinning! ⏬⏬⏬⏬ For more on host Concert Buddie: https://www.youtube.com/@ConcertBuddie https://concertbuddie.com IG: @concertbuddie For more on Arnaldo (fidelios_frequency): https://www.youtube.com/@fidelios_frequency IG: @fidelios_frequency For more on Jason Roxas: https://www.youtube.com/@JasonRoxas For more on Chris (Groove Seeker): https://www.instagram.com/thegrooveseeker IG: @thegrooveseeker For more on David Bianco (Safe & Sound Texas Audio Excursion): https://www.youtube.com/@SafeAndSoundTXAudioExcursion Part 1 of his interview with Bernie Grundman: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dO_WFCm1DAU For more information on Vinyl Community Podcasts: https://vinylcommunitypodcasts.com . . . . . In At the Vanguard of Vinyl, Darren Mueller examines how the advent of the long-playing record (LP) in 1948 revolutionized the recording and production of jazz in the 1950s. The LP's increased fidelity and playback capacity allowed lengthy compositions and extended improvisations to fit onto a single record, ushering in a period of artistic exploration. Despite these innovations, LP production became another site of negotiating the uneven power relations of a heavily segregated music industry. Exploring how musicians, producers, and other industry professionals navigated these dynamics, Mueller contends that the practice of making LPs significantly changed how jazz was created, heard, and understood in the 1950s and beyond. By attending to the details of audio production, he reveals how Black musicians such as Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, and Charles Mingus worked to redefine prevailing notions of race and cultural difference within the United States. Mueller demonstrates that the LP emerges as a medium of sound and culture that maps onto the more expansive sonic terrain of Black modernity in the 1950s. This week, the Dem Vinyl Boyz throw on the leather pants, tease up the hair, and turn the glam all the way up as we drop the needle on Poison’s multi-platinum party record Open Up and Say... Ahh! Released in 1988, this was the album that catapulted Poison from Sunset Strip heroes to global rock gods. Produced by Bruce Fairbairn (who also worked with Bon Jovi and Aerosmith), the album is packed with arena-shaking anthems, glittery glam hooks, and power ballads that defined the late '80s. From the sleazy swagger of “Nothin’ But a Good Time” to the tearjerking heartache of “Every Rose Has Its Thorn,” this LP is a crash course in glam metal glory. We talk about the album’s massive success (over 8 million copies sold), the MTV-fueled rise of Bret Michaels and crew, and how Poison both embodied and exploded the glam rock scene of the era. We also dive into the album’s infamous original cover art controversy and the evolution of their sound that balanced pop appeal with hard rock riffs. So plug in your Aqua Net and hop aboard the glam train—we’re revisiting the wild ride that was Poison’s Open Up and Say... Ahh!
This is going to be a very visual program, which may be a bit of a challenge because you're either listening to this as a radio show or podcast…so i need to work with me on this… Vinyl is back in a way that no one could have ever predicted…in countries like Canada, the US, the UK, Australia, and beyond, vinyl is once again outselling CDs…and a surprising number of people are buying vinyl even if they don't have a turntable… What's the point of that? ...simple…vinyl is a tangible and physical manifestation and representation of the music…it is something you own, something that resides with you, and no matter what happens, it is yours… Many fans stream the music while holding the vinyl in their hands…that's the best of both worlds…the vinyl never gets damaged, but you get to hear the music just the same… And the attraction is the same as it ever was…liner notes, lyric sheets—and the artwork… For a while, we were in real danger of seeing the glories of album artwork disappear…first, it was shrunk down to cd-sized…then with sometime like iTunes, you got a little postage-same image…and with streaming, you get almost nothing when it comes to something that visually embodies all the blood, sweat, tears, talent, and inspiration that went into making that album… So here on the radio (or the podcast), I'm going to ask you to conjure up images of these album covers in your mind…then you can go back to your vinyl library and take a look… We're revisiting album artwork on this episode of “The Ongoing History of New Music” with a look at the stories behind some iconic covers…and after this, you may not look at some of your albums the same way again… Learn more about your ad choices. Paul Riedl and Morris Kolontyrsky of Blood Incantation discuss the incredible 1st year of the album "Absolute Elsewhere", how it's transformed their lives and art, the creation of the record, the band's deep interest in vinyl collecting and lots more. Enter to win a signed vinyl copy of "Absolute Elsewhere" by becoming a sponsor at Patreon.com/VinylGuide Topics Include: Absolute Elsewhere transformed their lives: bigger venues, mainstream press, entirely new audiences. Album allows new stage production; band already writing faster than ever before. Now headlining shows in US; Europe tours were always headliners, just smaller. Forbes called it one of most important death metal records in history. Record serves as gateway, exposing listeners to extreme metal and progressive influences. Vinyl LP format is their artistic endpoint; last two albums are side-long tracks. Twenty-minute sides provide perfect breathing room for their narrative-driven compositions and riffs. Maxed out Pro Tools voices at Hansa Studios during Absolute Elsewhere recording sessions. First three records recorded live on analog tape; complete takes, minimal punch-ins. Absolute Elsewhere used hybrid approach: drums on tape, then built digitally with Arthur. Recording live on tape creates collective synergy and tension they want captured. Band uses Oblique Strategies cards; asks "what would Trey, Chuck, or Eno do?" Paul designs all layouts; collects test pressings and creates prototype covers himself. Searching for roughly 200 more records; has specific rare pressings in mind. Weakling's Dead as Dreams LP extremely rare; basement flood destroyed most copies. Double album versus double LP distinction: complementary discs versus interrupted single work. Songs start with riffs that suggest where to go; excitable band keeps moving. Timewave Zero was critical palate cleanser enabling more holistic collaborative approach forward. Tangerine Dream collaboration manifested unexpectedly; Thorsten used vintage Edgar Froese Mellotron samples. Future dreams include Brian Eno, Steve Roach; already have secret collaborations lined up. Step into the hazy swirl of distortion, pain, and beauty that is Siamese Dream, the breakthrough sophomore album from The Smashing Pumpkins. Released in 1993, this record solidified the Chicago band as one of the most important forces in the alternative rock explosion of the early '90s. Crafted under the intense perfectionism of frontman Billy Corgan, Siamese Dream was famously recorded under heavy emotional and psychological strain. With internal band tensions, Corgan’s battles with depression, and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin’s drug issues, the album was nearly doomed before it began. But out of chaos came a sonic masterpiece. Produced by Butch Vig (who also produced Nevermind for Nirvana), Siamese Dream is both lush and brutal — blending dense guitar layering with orchestral elements and raw emotion. It opens with the thunderous “Cherub Rock”, a track that sets the tone with explosive drums and swirling fuzz. Other standouts include the beautifully melancholic “Disarm,” the shoegaze-tinged “Mayonaise,” the soaring “Today,” and the crushing “Silverfuck.” The album was a commercial and critical triumph, debuting at #10 on the Billboard 200 and eventually going 4× Platinum. Critics praised its intricate production, emotional intensity, and ambition. It remains a defining album of the ‘90s — a tortured, beautiful document of a band and a frontman trying to keep it together while making something transcendent. Siamese Dream isn’t just a record — it’s a world to get lost in.
