This week, Emily and Andrew are joined by Louise Woletz-Hinz of Dwarfcraft Devices and Philippe Herndon of Caroline Guitar Company. We chat about how we're spending our social/physical distancing days, how COVID-19 is impacting them as pedal builders, and the potential future of creative endeavors. It's more uplifting than it sounds. Sponsored by Sinasoid Pro Audio Couture. Like the podcast? Support us on Patreon for some sweet perks! This week's episode launches on Christmas Eve, so Merry Christmas! And also Happy Hanukkah since we're a few days into that. Emily talks about her gig at a gas station, Andrew tries to shame her for not fully understanding the difference between Audioslave and Velvet Revolver. Then they get into the topic of the episode: playing Christmas Music! And specifically the correct way to play sleigh bells (the instrument, not the song). Sponsored by Dwarfcraft Devices and BOSS. This week, Emily and Andrew talk about subscription boxes for guitarists. Do they make sense? Is it possible to do it right? Can it even recover after a certain brand took advantage of its consumers? They also talk about how Emily just turned 30 and some discount pedals she picked up. Andrew talks about his new pedalboard and cables and about his dream to visit Chicago Music Exchange. They also mention the problematic elements of Island of the Blue Dolphins and Billy Gibbons. Special shout out to Dwarfcraft Devices and their new zine! Sponsored by...you? We ditched the tone control for a passive 3 band eq tone stack, added a presence control after the last gain stage for more tone shaping, put a footswitchable Germanium boost with gain and tone controls, and a diode switch to add an extra order of magnitude of tonal options.
This week, Emily talks about some new gear, including the Seths and the Delayvid Foster Wallace from Bookworm Effects, and the ARF from Dwarfcraft Devices, and Emily discusses the pedals she sold to justify the new ones. Then the pair talk about Stereo rigs and the differences between types of stereo rigs. Episode sponsored by Jennings Guitars and Bookworm Effects. The Mt. This week we have Louise, co-owner of Dwarfcraft Devices on the show! We talk about cheese curds, cats, our favorite Dwarfcraft pedals, karaoke, booth babes (AGAIN), and Nashville. Then, we get into the topic of the episode, which is abusive men in the music and gear industry, things that make women uncomfortable in the industry (like the Guitar World bikini gear guide), and whether or not it's right to call abusive men "men." Sometimes I just get lucky; in this case, I happened to skip over to the 'check your messages' widget in Facebook, and saw that I had a conversation I'd never checked into. It was from Benjamin Hinz of Dwarfcraft Devices, and we started talking about doing an interview. When I realized that he was in Eau Claire (about a 1 1/2 hour drive from me), I knew that we needed to do this face-to-face. And so we did! I got a chance to see the Dwaftcraft offices, say hi to some of the people working their (and see their process in action) and have a lunch at Culver's (which is something that every Midwesterner would understand). Then we holed up in Ben's office - which is filled to the brim with instruments, circuit boards and drawings - and did our interview. He's got some interesting ideas about music-making and circuit and product design, and has come to these ideas through hard work and a player's experience. I always appreciate people that balance the player and design aesthetic, and Ben does that to a T. I had a great visit, a good time talking - and even walked away with a score that will be the map for an upcoming album. So how about that!?! Enjoy!
