“Andy Rourke Remembered” Well, he may have been in a band with the greats, but let's face it, Andy Rourke was one of them as well. The Manchester born Rourke joined his childhood pal Johnny Marr's band The Smiths in 1982 and he played with them until their demise in 1987. That's Rourke you hear on every Smiths record, including The Queen Is Dead, Strangeways Here We Come and Louder Than Bombs. After the legendary band broke up, Rourke played with Sinead O'Connor, The Pretenders, Killing Joke, Badly Drawn Boy, Ian Brown of the Stone Roses and Morrissey. Rourke also teamed up with New Order's Peter Hook and Mani of the Stone Roses and formed the band Freebass. He also played with Dolores O'Riordan of the Cranberries in the band D.A.R.K. and around the time I chatted with him, he had formed Blitz Vega with Kav Sandhu, a band that also featured Johnny Marr as a special guest. Rourke's life was busy and exciting and this list doesn't cover all he did, but it does serve as a reminder of how brilliant he was. A prowling blend of rockabilly, funk and post-punk, Rourke's baselines were intricate, inventive and artful. Rourke died in Mid-May and the tributes that poured in were testament after testament that this man was loved. Perhaps it was Moz's, however, that was the most on-point: "He will never die as long as his music is heard. He didn't ever know his own power, and nothing that he played had been played by someone else. His distinction was so terrific and unconventional and he proved it could be done. He was also very, very funny and very happy, and post-Smiths, he kept a steady identity - never any manufactured moves. I suppose, at the end of it all, we hope to feel that we were valued. Andy need not worry about that.” www.bombshellradio.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.embersarts.com Stereo Embers The Podcast Twitter: @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast EMAIL: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

“Introducing Billy Bradley" A veteran of commercials, movies and television while still only in his 30s, Michael Charles Roman is one of those timeless actors. He's got the punchline prowess of everyone from Michael J. Fox to Jason Bateman, the comedic instincts of Martin Short and the theatrical range that could find him doing period pieces to contemporary dramas. Roman was in films like Keeping The Faith with Ed Norton and Ben Stiller, Little Nicky with Adam Sandler and Rob Burnett's We Made This Movie. When it comes to TV, you've seen him on Bones, The Good Wife,Veronica Mars, Ground Floor, 2 Broke Girls, Evil, Frequency, and most recently, NetFlix's Grace and Frankie with Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. The guy can do it all. And just to test that idea, he decided to do it all on his first short film Introducing Billy Bradley. The film is a semi-autobiographical short written, directed and produced by Roman, who also stars alongside his former Grace and Frankie scene partner Martin Sheen (The West Wing, Apocalypse Now). Introducing Billy Bradley follows a down-on-his-luck actor who finds himself at a critical crossroads: save his life or salvage what's left of his floundering career. The movie also stars Alexandra Metz (CW's Frequency), Arjay Smith (ABC's The Rookie, TNT's Perception) and Garrett Morris (CBS's 2 Broke Girls, Saturday Night Live). Billy Bradley does what the best short films do—leave you both satisfied and wanting more. Not an easy balance, but in his directional debut, Roman does just that. It's a brilliant film that in just 14 minutes, manages to do what some films take hours to attempt to do. A wonderfully lush and layered debut, Mole is awash with ideas. Maryam Said's Poolblood project arrive with a truck full of ideas and a reverence for pop rock. Said's religious upbringing offered little access to secular music, though Yusuf Islam's (née Cat Stevens) gentle folk rock managed to slip through. A later embrace of artists like Fiona Apple, Nick Drake and Apples in Stereo, however, left an indelible imprint of the songwriting that populates this first LP. It's an album about relationships, and learning to lean into inevitable discomforts. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Today's poem is Stereo by Anne Waldman. The Slowdown is your daily poetry ritual. In this episode, Major writes… “‘Tis the season of weddings! In years past, I've poured libations; I've even read a poem, but this summer, I have the privilege and am hugely excited to officiate the nuptials of our friend and digital producer of The Slowdown, James Napoli and fiancé Britta Greene. Regarding, I'll just say this: Love is an unrestrained force of tenderness and light in our world.” Celebrate the power of poems with a gift to The Slowdown today. “Sea Swallow Me” In the dark, harrowing, and gripping memoir Sea Swallow Me, which details a drug addiction that almost killed her, the Bay Area author Suki Jones writes with a raw immediacy and refreshing candor about not only being dependent on drugs, but keeping that dependency a secret from her family and friends.Set against the backdrop of the Bay Area in the early '90s, Jones balances motherhood and modeling with deft precision, but behind the scenes she was falling apart and roaming the night with punk rockers, metalheads, and sometimes even strangers, just looking for her next fix. A ferocious memoir about broken family history, sexual abuse, and debilitating addiction, Sea, Swallow Me vividly wanders through the decade with a fiery resolve which ultimately reveals how Jones survived when she shouldn't have. Sea, Swallow Me is a powerful tale of resilience and redemption. “On Banjo” In sunny a San Diego high school somewhere in the 70s, while kids were listening to Aerosmith and Van Halen and Boston, Alison Brown was listening to bluegrass. She had started on guitar but gravitated to the banjo and by her teens, she was already pretty proficient on the instrument. She won first place at the Canadian National Banjo Championship, played a gig at the Grand Ole Opry and toured one summer with fiddler Stuart Duncan. After high school She headed to Harvard, knocked out an MBA at UCLA and then went to work as an Investment Banker. You know—the typical bluegrass story you hear all the time. Thinking music was a weekend thing, Brown had a nice balance going but then music decided to tip the scales. Alison Krauss flashed the bat signal for a banjo player and Brown answered the call, and gave up her Wall Street environs for a life in music. And what a life it has been. An internationally recognized virtuoso on banjo, Brown has played with Alison Krauss, Michelle Shocked, fronted her own Alison Brown Quartet, toured all over the world, from Japan to South America, along the way playing The Kennedy Center, the Newport Folk Festival, The Cambridge Folk Festival in England and the Galway Arts Festival in Ireland. With a Grammy in her trophy case along with multiple Grammy nominations, features on CBS Sunday Morning, NPRs All Things Considered and close to 15 critically lauded albums under her belt, including her fabulous new one No Banjo, Alison Brown is an artistic force. And what of On Banjo? Well, putting it simply, it's a stunner. A deftly played album filled with technical prowess, musical finesse and compositional dexterity, On Banjo is a song cycle that's celebratory, joyful and cathartic. Brown is the co-founder of Compass Records Group, she serves on the Board of the Nashville Chapter of the Recording Academy and she's the co-chair of the Steve Martin Banjo Prize. She's kind of a big deal and guess what? She's as nice as can be. www.alisonbrown.com www.bombshellradio.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.embersarts.com www.alexgreenonline.com Twitter: @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com
And Another Thing With Dave, by Dave Smith #AATWD Part 4 of 6 Dave and unapologetic Christian from the Stereo app discuss the faults in the American educational system, such as why they don't teach us about finance, fractional reserve banking, income inequality, and wealth distribution. They then move on to discuss Operation Cointel Pro, a counterintelligence program run by the FBI meant to combat communism and progressivism. Ronald Reagan was a part of this program and was rewarded for his efforts with the governorship of California. The FBI also spied on universities and listed left-leaning professors and students, as well as the Black Panthers, Earth First, and the environmental movement. The FBI's documents revealed that they would never allow a progressive candidate to take power in the US, which could be interpreted as a threat of assassination. This conversation is about the FBI's efforts to eliminate progressive risk factors before the assassination of Martin Luther King and the state sanctioned murder of Malcolm X. It delves into the dark world of MKUltra experiments, where Charles Manson was dosed with LSD in order to mold his brain. The goal of MKUltra was to find a way to program someone to commit murder without having any moral inhibition. The conversation then moves to the famous experiment conducted at Stanford, where people were told to administer voltage to someone, and when the person stopped responding, they kept going because someone told them to. This conversation highlights the dangers of blindly following authority, and how people can be manipulated into doing something that goes against their own moral compass. In this conversation, the speaker and their companion discussed Cointel Pro, a secret program used by the FBI in the 1960s and 1970s to spy on political activists. The speaker then shared a link to an interview with the people who had burglarized the FBI's office to expose the program. The companion then asked a question about empowering women in society, to which the speaker answered that it was necessary to level the playing field as women still get paid less than men for doing the same job. The conversation then shifted to a book the speaker was reading about the history of women's oppression in the United States. The speaker concluded that while society had come a long way, women still weren't treated equally to men in every way. Thank you for tuning in! “Forwards” For more than 40 years the Welsh band the Alarm have been one of the most consistent acts on the planet, playing songs with conviction, heart and belief. With almost 20 studio albums under their belts, along with a discography that includes live albums, box sets and EPs, The Alarm are one of those bands where you pretty much want everything they put out. From albums like Declaration to Strength to their brand new one Forwards, The Alarm are a completist's band. Speaking of Forwards, it's a remarkable record—singer/songwriter Mike Peters has never sounded better, his voice alive with muscle and belief. The Welsh band have had a remarkable career that's filled with endless highlights-- they toured with U2 and Bob Dylan, played at Queen's Live at Wembley concert in 1986, been on IRS's the Cutting Edge and American Bandstand, had hit singles all over the world even cracking the Billboard Top 50 here in the States, and wrote a song that became the official Welsh anthem for Euro 2020. This is a band that's all about community, support and they remain as vital as ever. www.thealarm.com www.bombshellradio.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.alexgreenonline.com www.embersarts.com Stereo Embers: Twitter: @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

Peter Rauhofer (April 29, 1965 - May 7, 2013) was an Austrian-American House producer, remixer and DJ. Peter was born in Wien (Vienna) and mainly lived in New York City. Peter first got his start as an A&R man for GIG Records. Since his first recording under his well known alias, Club 69, Peter had come to be one of the most in-demand remixers of the late 90's/2000's.Club 69 was one of the most popular alias of Peter Rauhofer in the 1990's. At first, Rauhofer used different aliases to release his music. 'Unique' (1991) was first released under the names Danube Dance (a name he took from a compilation project of the same name released on GiG Records), Unique (16) and Saxmachine. These projects all featured the vocals of Kim Cooper. In 1992, a remix of 'Unique' and the single 'Let Me Be Your Underwear' began to be played in Europe and in North America. Both tracks became instant club hits. He was famous for a variety of his remixes including Cher's "Believe" and a number of Madonna's songs including "Nothing Really Matters", "American Life", "Nothing Fails", "Nobody Knows Me", "Get Together", "Impressive Instant" and "4 Minutes", as well as her collaboration with Britney Spears, "Me Against the Music" and various collaborations with Janet Jackson ("Throb" and "Just A Little While" to name a few). He has also provided remixes for Kylie Minogue, Whitney Houston, Jessica Simpson, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Yoko Ono, Pink, Tori Amos, Pet Shop Boys, Depeche Mode, Yazoo, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Book Of Love, Soft Cell, Duran Duran and Mariah Carey, among others. He was also behind the tribal house record label Star 69 and was a frequent producer of the label's releases. His style shifted from a house/tribal vibe to a more tribal/progressive feel with his later mixes. There wasn't a time in the late 1990s when one would go to a US club to hear many of his mixes playing through the speakers. Peter has also recorded material under the aliases, Saxmachine, Danube Dance, House Heroes and Size Queen. Peter once worked with Victor Calderone for The Collaboration project and once with the Pet Shop Boys for The Collaboration project. His remix credits are many and include: Depeche Mode, Madonna, Seal, Funky Green Dogs, Kylie Minogue, etc.Rauhofer spun throughout the United States. He was the former resident DJ at the weekly gay dance night held at the Roxy in New York, which closed its doors in 2007. Rauhofer was formerly the resident DJ of the gay dance party called "Work". His party was held weekly at the Stereo nightclub in New York until March 3, 2008 when the City invoked eminent domain and acquired the building. "Work" was a monthly event, despite lacking a permanent venue.Rauhofer was mostly known for spinning tribal house and continued to play many gay circuit party events, and was scheduled to play the ultimate events (White Party Palm Springs and One Mighty Weekend's Magic Journeys at Arabian Nights) prior to his falling ill in February 2013. The Collaboration was a dance music project created by Rauhofer. Rauhofer's first release as The Collaboration was "Do It Properly", a 1999 track produced with Victor Calderone, featuring Deborah Cooper on vocals. The Collaboration moniker was then used by Rauhofer on "Break 4 Love", a number one Hot Dance Music/Club Play hit featuring Pet Shop Boys.Peter Rauhofer (Club 69) won the Grammy Award in 2000 for Best Remixer of the Year for his remix of Cher's "Believe".On April 17, 2013, it was made public that Rauhofer was diagnosed with a brain tumor. A message was posted on his Facebook page by his friend and manager, Angelo Russo, informing friends and fans of the situation. On May 7, 2013, Peter Rauhofer passed away.HEAR THIS! “Time On Earth” In the early ‘80s, the British born singer-songwriter Pete Astor was the frontman for the band The Loft and when that outfit split up, he formed the Weather Prophets who put out a trio of albums including the fabulous Diesel River and the miraculous Judges Juries and Horsemen. Astor kept the dream alive after the Prophets split up, emerging with fabulous projects like The Wisdom of Harry and Ellis Island Sound. Currently, Astor is a senior lecturer at the University of Westminster, and in 2014, his book on Richard Hell and the Voidoids' Blank Generation, was published as part of Bloomsbury's ongoing 33⅓ series on seminal rock and roll albums. Over the years Astor hasn't stopped putting out solo albums which are practically peerless. From Submarine to One For The Ghost to his outstanding new one Time On Earth, Pete Astor remains one of the most compelling figures in modern music. He's quietly released a discography that's redolent with thought, lyrical dexterity, observational smarts and hooks galore. Astor is one of the most listenable artists out there. Of Time On Earth, Dave Cantrell of Stereo Embers Magazine wrote, “…it's punchy in the melodic, reassuring way we've come to expect, somehow poignant and unsentimental in equal measure, it's a worthy addition to an already-bursting canon of sublime pop jewels.” www.peteastor.com www.bombshellradio.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.embersarts.com www.alexgreenonline.com Twitter: @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

"Bluegrass Vacation” With close to 20 albums under his belt, including Country Love Songs, Let's Kill Saturday Night, and his fabulous new one Bluegrass Vacation, Robbie Fulks has had quite a career. Over the last thirty years the Pennsylvania born singer-songwriter has collaborated with everyone from Steve Albini to Dallas Wayne to NRBQ's Al Anderson, worked as a country music songwriter for the Music Row publisher API and scored two Grammy nominations in 2016 for Best Folk Album and Best American Roots Song. There's a lot that's cool about Robbie Fulks—his flatpicking guitar style, his poetic turns of phrase, his unique sense of humor and his penchant to cover songs you'd never think he'd cover—he's knocked out versions of tracks by everyone from The Bangles to Shania Twain, so you pretty much never know what's going to happen. But what's really cool about Robbie Fulks is that he's an engine of creative power and that engine hasn't dimmed once in his 30 year career. His new album Bluegrass Vacation is a rollicking and joyful blast of sheer bluegrass bliss. From One Glass of Whisky to Old Time Music is Here To Stay, Bluegrass Vacation is a joyful romp that references the genre with a respectful tip of the hat that breathes new life into an old tradition. www.robbiefulks.com www.bombshellradio.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.embersarts.com www.alexgreenonline.com Twitter: @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

“Born In A Trunk” She may have been born in the Bay Area, but Amy Irving might as well have been born in a theatre. Her father was the film and stage director Julius Irving and her mother was the actress Priscilla Pointer. And what happens when you have theatre parents? Well, you're in the theatre. A lot. And then you're on the stage. A lot. And then it's in your blood and there's no turning back. Amy Irving got her start on the stage at 9 months old and from there she never stopped. She studied at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, landed in L.A. and almost immediately started landing role after role in movies and television. What movies and what television, you might be asking? Well, in the movies category she was in Carrie, Delancey Street, The Competition, Honeysuckle Rose and Yentil. She was also the singing voice of Jessica Rabbit in Who Framed Roger Rabbit? As for television, she was on Police Woman, Happy Days and Once An Eagle with Sam Elliott and Glenn Ford. And not only was she working regularly in those mediums, she was still a busy theatre actor, appearing in Amadeus, Romeo and Juliet, Blithe Spirit and The Glass Menagerie. Along the way she picked up an Oscar nomination, a few Golden Globe nominations and she won a Screen Actors Guild Award. Now this is all just a partial list, but the fact of the matter is, from the big screen to the small screen to the stage, Amy Irving has always been a very busy working actor. Which brings us to Born In A Trunk, which is Irving debut album. Produced by Goolis, Born In A Trunk is a ten-track collection of songs that are culled from her life and career. She covers numbers by Willie Nelson, Tom Waits and Death Cab For Cutie. And The result? Well, not only a compelling and riveting listen, but an album whose song cycle combines to tell the story of a life on the stage and a career in the arts. Why write a memoir when you can sing one, right? And, boy can Amy Irving sing. Her precision, her timbre, her effortless phrasing and her sheer musical poise make Born In A Trunk one of 2023's great surprises.
