Hot damn! On this week’s episode Gen X Correspondent scores an interview with Michael “Away” Langevin. Away talks about providing the orchestra cues from some of the band’s favorite cyperpunk movies, attempting to mic up every single piece of the orchestra, members of the symphony catching Voivod for lifting classical passages in their songs, learning how to make digital art in the early 80s and getting a band new computer with earnings from Probot, working on an 80s-style video game called Nuclear Warrior, the Story of Voivod, and creating art in every city on tour. For a little added color, Joe and Jordan talk about other bands that have experimented with the orchestra and we track down a 1999 Guitar World issue focused on Metallica’s S&M. On this episode of Talking Guitars on Johnny Beane TV, we dive into a major story shaking up the guitar world. Fender is finally speaking out about its controversial cease-and-desist strategy involving Stratocaster-style guitars — and the company says it's not targeting every double-cutaway guitar after all. Using a detailed Guitar World article, we break down Fender's legal battle, what the company's real endgame might be, and how this could change the future of the guitar industry forever. Fender says it's focused on stopping exact Stratocaster copies, not innovation, and may even work directly with builders to make small design changes instead of forcing guitars off the market entirely. We also discuss the backlash from the guitar community, the role of attorney Ron Bienstock, possible design elements Fender may be protecting beyond just the body shape, and what happens next as the June 8 deadline approaches. Could this redefine the future of S-style guitars? Watch now and join the conversation. #Fender #Stratocaster #TalkingGuitars #JohnnyBeaneTV

Hi everyone, and welcome back to another episode of The Talk Music Podcast! If you love jaw-dropping guitar playing and high-octane rock then listen up, because if you haven't discovered JACOB DERAPS yet… now is the time.Hailing from St-Georges, Quebec, Jacob has exploded onto the modern rock scene as one of the most electrifying young guitarists out there. His playing blends insane technical precision with a deep love for the golden era of hard rock—channeling legends like Eddie Van Halen while bringing a fresh, modern energy that's completely his own.And the industry is taking notice. Guitar World—with over 1.7 million followers—recently asked: “Who's the most exciting up-and-coming guitar player?” Their answer? Jacob Deraps. They even said they couldn't get one of his riffs out of their head for days—and boldly claimed in one of their videos: “Jacob Deraps is here to rescue hard rock.”His rise started early—at just 13 years old, his YouTube performances went viral, stunning fans with his uncanny ability to capture the tone and feel of Eddie Van Halen. That buzz quickly turned into real recognition, including praise, support and guitar endorsement from the Van Halen camp, and admiration from Dweezil Zappa, who awarded him the prestigious Dweezil and Frank Zappa Fellowship. In this episode, we dive into his journey—from those early viral moments to signing a global publishing deal with Anthem Entertainment (home of Rush), building an impressive international following, and producing his own music. We also talk studio tips, creative process, and his latest album Viva Rock 'n' Roll—which shot straight to #1 on the hard rock charts in Japan and scored an impressive 88/100 in Burn Magazine. After tearing it up across the U.S. on tour recently and wowing audiences everywhere, Jacob is just getting started—with plenty more shows on the horizon. Just posted, Deraps received a 10 out of 10 review from Powerplay Magazine for their Feb 6 2026 N.Y.C. show. So if you get the chance to see him live, don't miss it. Hosted on Acast. Adam and Dan recap Adam's bizarre recent gig where his voice failed on some songs but suddenly returned mid-set, helped by Amber, and he tested gear including an M5 mic he now praises and a trem setter that improved his Vibrant guitar's tuning stability. They shout out listener Jason Hughes from Dayton, Ohio (Simple Daze), then pivot to Rolling Stone's new “100 Greatest Guitar Solos” list, calling it infuriating rage bait and introducing a “Greatest List Bingo Card” to flag predictable contrarian picks. They debate snubs and weird placements (e.g., “Sultans of Swing,” “Cliffs of Dover,” “Free Bird”), critique questionable inclusions, compare overlap with Guitar World's 2022 reader poll, and run through Rolling Stone's top 20, reacting to live-cut pretension and the surprising #1 pick: Prince's “Purple Rain.”

He talks about the co-writing process and describes it as “putting his musical abilities into words.” His latest solo release, Drama, he calls his best and most romantic work to date — a largely orchestral album that stretches beyond his usual style. He also reflects on the Japanese entertainment industry, the uniquely Japanese idea of heta-uma, idol music, and the role of “cuteness” in J-Pop. Producers such as Tsunku and Komuro Tetsuya play a key role in drawing out this unique appeal. J-Pop carries deeper cultural nuance than outsiders might assume. You jump into this episode balancing the reality of working gigs with the mindset that keeps musicians moving forward. From Dave’s recent experiences playing atypical rooms with Bitter Pill to cramming new material for Casual Gravity, you're reminded that momentum matters even when the crowd is small. Always Be Performing is not about scale, it's about consistency. That theme carries straight into the conversation with Laura Whitmore, whose career has been shaped by connecting people, creating opportunities, and knowing when to pull back just enough to build a sustainable life alongside the work. As Laura walks you through the birth and growth of the She Rocks Awards, you hear what it actually takes to build something lasting. It started small, grew through trust and partnerships, and evolved by treating the event like a show, with pacing, flow, and intention. You dig into what real visibility looks like, how to define success on your own terms, and why borrowed platforms are never enough to build a career. The takeaway is practical and clear: start with a big vision, set measurable goals, build community deliberately, and own your audience. This episode is a reminder that longevity comes from intention, preparation, and showing up with purpose, gig after gig. 00:00:00 Gig Gab 520 – Monday, February 9th, 2026 February 9th: National Pizza Day 00:01:00 Dave's Gig Updates Playing atypical venues with Bitter Pill Learning new songs with Casual Gravity Always Be Performing…even for the small crowds! 00:17:10 SPONSOR: Squarespace. Welcome to Episode 400!! Dave Hill is a comedian, writer, musician, actor, radio host, and man-about-town originally from Cleveland, Ohio but now living in New York City in a totally sweet apartment with a party deck and everything. Hot chicks come over to hang out and eat cheese plates and stuff with him all the time and it's awesome. Anyway, on the show business front, Dave has appeared on Netflix's The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Adult Swim's Joe Pera Talks with You Amazon's The Tick, Peacock TV's Girls5Eva, Comedy Central's @midnight and Inside Amy Schumer programs, TBS' Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, TV Land's The Jim Gaffigan Show, and TruTV's Comedy Knockout among a bunch of others. He is a frequent on-air host for HBO and Cinemax and has been on channels like MTV, VH1, BBC-America, and the Sundance Channel a whole bunch too. Dave also starred in his own television program The King of Miami on the Mojo Network, which was cancelled even though Dave really liked it. The show also aired in the United Kingdom on Sky TV's Film24 Channel. And you can still watch The King of Miami on Hulu too, which Dave is super pumped about. Oh, and Dave was a correspondent on Hoppus on Music starring Blink 182's Mark Hoppus on the Fuse channel, which ruled. Dave has been on other shows and in obscure movies too but let's keep moving for now. Dave performs live comedy over the world and has appeared at such festivals as the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, SXSW, San Francisco Sketchfest, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, Sasquatch Festival, Bumbershoot, Bonnaroo, the Bridgetown Comedy Festival in Portland, the Crap Comedy Festival in Oslo, Outside Lands in San Francisco, and then some other ones too. He has also performed comedy at Sing Sing Correctional Facility twice and even ripped some guitar solos inside a Mexican prison a couple times too. In 2007, Variety magazine named Dave one of their “10 Comedians to Watch,” something he still won't shut up about. Some things are hard to let go of. Dave hosted his own radio show The Goddamn Dave Hill Show on WFMU in Jersey City, New Jersey every Monday night from 9pm to midnight for years and now hosts the podcast Dave Hill's Podcasting Incident, which is also broadcast on the UK's Fubar Radio, So...You're Canadian with Dave Hill, and History Fluffer, on which he is joined by Jim Biederman, Jodi Lennon, and Chris Gersbeck. Dave is also a frequent contributor to public radio's Live from Here with Chris Thile and  This American Life. He has also appeared on podcasts like WTF with Marc Maron, The Adam Carolla Show, The Nerdist, and then roughly 78 other ones besides those. Dave is the author of four books, including his brand new book The Awesome Game: One Man's Incredible, Globe-Crushing Hockey Odyssey, in addition to Parking the Moose (Doubleday Canada/Penguin Random House 2019), Tasteful Nudes (St. Martins Press, 2012) and Dave Hill Doesn't Live Here Anymore (Blue Rider Press 2016). He has also written for the New York Times, GQ, Salon, The Paris Review, McSweeney's, New York Observer, The Cleveland Plain Dealer, VICE, Guitar World, and a bunch of other places too. Comedy legend Dick Cavett called Dave “a major figure among American comic writers, past and present,” which is pretty much the coolest thing that has ever happened as far as Dave is concerned. Dave is also a musician who currently sings and plays guitar in the power pop band Valley Lodge, whose song “Go” is the theme song to HBO's Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, and the psych/garage rock band Painted Doll. He was also a member of Cleveland rock bands Sons of Elvis and Cobra Verde as well as Diamondsnake, a heavy metal band with Moby. Additionally, Dave has played guitar for Walter Schreifels and muscle metal band Thor and bass for Lucy Wainwright Roche and former Faith No More singer Chuck Mosley. He also contributed musical scores to films such as Dirty Deeds,

Guitar World magazine ranked him as the 14th Greatest Metal Guitarist of All Time.Outside Kiss, Frehley achieved further commercial success and popularity, with his 1978 eponymous debut solo studio album achieving platinum status. His 1987 eponymous debut studio album with his Frehley's Comet band was also a big success. Frehley is noted for his aggressive, atmospheric, and melodic guitar playing and is also known for the use of many "special effects" guitars, including a Gibson Les Paul guitar that emits smoke from the neck humbucker pickup and produces spinning pyrotechnics and a custom Les Paul that emits light based on song tempo. Frehley was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014 as a member of Kiss. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 04:42 UTC on Friday, 17 October 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Ace Frehley on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Kendra.

oel Hoekstra is a powerhouse guitarist known for his technical skill, versatility, and relentless work ethic. Born on December 13, 1970, in Iowa City, Iowa, and raised in a musical household, he started out playing cello and piano. But everything changed when he saw Angus Young of AC/DC on TV—at that moment, he knew guitar was his calling. That inspiration launched a career that would span Broadway stages, stadium tours, and studio sessions with some of the biggest names in rock.Joel first gained wider recognition playing with Night Ranger in the late 2000s. Around the same time, he became a fixture in the Broadway musical Rock of Ages, performing eight shows a week while juggling touring commitments with rock bands. His ability to seamlessly shift between hard rock stages and theater pits set him apart from most guitarists in the scene. He later joined the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, known for their elaborate holiday arena tours, and in 2014, he landed a major gig as guitarist for Whitesnake. Since then, he's toured the world with the band, appearing on albums like The Purple Album and Flesh & Blood, where he also contributed as a songwriter. He's also performed alongside Cher, playing guitar for her Las Vegas residency and her “Here We Go Again” tour, proving he can hold his own in any musical environment. In addition to his high-profile band work, Joel leads his own project, Joel Hoekstra's 13, a melodic hard rock supergroup featuring players like Russell Allen, Vinny Appice, Tony Franklin, and Jeff Scott Soto. The project has released several critically acclaimed albums—Dying to Live (2015), Running Games (2021), and Crash of Life (2023)—with a new one on the way in 2025. The music is a blend of soaring vocals, powerful riffs, and sharp songwriting that showcases Joel's full range as a musician and producer.Outside of performing, Joel is a respected session guitarist and educator. He's contributed to albums by Foreigner, Dee Snider, and many others, and he's shared his expertise in magazines like Guitar World. Whether he's tearing it up onstage with a rock legend or composing intricate solos in the studio, Joel Hoekstra continues to prove why he's one of the most in-demand guitarists in rock today.⸻

He also apologizes for any dog squeaker noises you may hear from his enthusiastic puppy. Are we seeing a rise in a new demographic for guitar players? An article in Guitar World made the guys ponder something about the current guitar buying public and it has got the old grey matter moving a little. Brian ponders whether he should create an Only Fans site. These days, large-scale high-production music festivals take over major cities and regularly attract crowds of every genre — including the current version of Lollapalooza that draws a casual 400,000 people to its resident Chicago stomping grounds. But kick it back a few decades and this kind of maximalist mega-show wasn't quite the norm it is now, especially for musical tastes outside of the mainstream. In their second collaborative book, Lollapalooza: The Uncensored Story of Alternative Rock's Wildest Festival, music journalists Richard Bienstock and Tom Beaujour flash back to when the Lollapalooza we know now was a new tour concept bringing 1990s alternative artists and ideas center stage. Lollapalooza first transports readers back to the festival's origins – a 20+ city summer sprawl highlighting alternative music, art, and counterculture, conceived by Perry Farrell as a farewell tour for his band Jane's Addiction. From 1991-1997, this breakthrough tour shifted the scope of live music experiences and helped forge a new path for the decade's subcultures to reach the masses and the media. Bienstock and Beaujour have compiled hundreds of new interviews to dig into the dirt of how the historic festival came into being at every level – from headlining artists and record label execs to tour organizers and promoters to freakshow performers, stage crews, and roadies. Lollapalooza is packed with gritty details of an era of shows that defied genres and drew crowds across style lines. Music, art, and politics drawing from alt-rock, goth, industrial, metal, punk, hip-hop, EDM, and avant-garde explorations – all coming together under one big tent. Featuring original interviews with iconic artists like Green Day, Patti Smith, Rage Against the Machine, Ice-T, Pearl Jam, Sonic Youth, Soundgarden, Nine Inch Nails, Jane's Addiction, Tool, Smashing Pumpkins, Alice in Chains, Metallica, and many more, this collection amplifies voices that helped shape generations of contemporary thinkers, creative activists, and live music audiences. Journeying through 90s nostalgia, uncensored first-hand accounts, and the long-term reverberations of a groundbreaking tour, Bienstock and Beaujour document a high-impact chapter of modern American music. A VIP pass to the action onstage and backstage, on the road and behind the scenes – Lollapalooza details the cultural shift of the alternative rock revolution and the echoes still heard through concert crowds today. Richard Bienstock is a journalist, musician, and author whose work has been featured in the New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Rolling Stone, Billboard, and Spin. He is the executive editor of Guitar Aficionado magazine and former senior editor of Guitar World and has authored and co-authored books including Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck and Slash: An Intimate Portrait.  Tom Beaujour is a journalist, music producer, and engineer who has been featured in television shows like Orange is the New Black, A Handmaid's Tale, and Criminal Minds. He is a co-founder and former editor-in-chief of Revolver and has contributed to Rolling Stone, the New York Times, Blender, and Billboard. He is the co-author of Nöthin' But a Good Time: The Uncensored History of the '80s Hard Rock Explosion, alongside Richard Bienstock. Mike Squires is a Seattle-based touring musician and the host of Couch Riffs Podcast since 2019. Festival season is just around the corner, and without Lollapalooza, many fan-favorite events wouldn't exist. STEVE LUKATHER DENIES RUMORS OF PLAYING GUITAR ON NEW VAN HALEN ALBUM TOTO's Steve Lukather has dismissed recent reports suggesting he will play guitar on a new VAN HALEN album. Earlier this week, Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf reported that Alex Van Halen was working on a collection of previously unreleased VAN HALEN recordings, with Lukather assisting in completing them. In a paywalled Guitar World article, Alex was quoted as saying: “Ed and Steve Lukather were very good friends and often worked together. There's no one better suited to help me through this process.” Lukather, seemingly surprised by the comment, responded in the same article: “Did Alex say that? Oh, in that case, the news is true. Ed, Alex, and I were very close for years. It's true that we worked on this together.” However, on Saturday (March 15), Lukather took to Instagram to clarify his involvement, writing: “For the record: Ever since Alex Van Halen mentioned we were going to work together, there's been a huge misunderstanding. I will NEVER play a single note on a VAN HALEN song—ever! Al asked me to help sort through a ton of unfinished recordings of him and Ed writing and recording together—music that never saw the light of day. That's all I know at this point. The idea that I would play guitar on this is ridiculous. I have too much love and respect for Ed and his music. Plus, I don't play anything like him. My role is more of a co-producer, if anything. I'm honored Al would ask me. Let's see…” Alex has previously stated there's enough material in the VAN HALEN vault for “three or four albums.” On Chris Jericho's Talk Is Jericho podcast, he shared: “I've talked about it loosely, and I'm a bit superstitious, but I can say this: We're going through the vault, digging into the ideas Ed left behind. There's some great stuff in there. When you're in the thick of it, sometimes you miss the real gems. It's only when you revisit them later that you realize, ‘Wow, I forgot about this. This kicks ass.' But it takes time. I want to do it right.” LUKATHER & VAN HALEN'S HISTORY Eddie Van Halen and Steve Lukather had a long history of collaboration. Lukather played the main riff on Michael Jackson's Beat It, while Eddie provided the iconic solo. Eddie also played bass on Lukather's debut solo album and made a guest appearance on Steve's 2003 Christmas album, Santamental. Following Eddie's passing in 2020, Lukather reflected on their friendship in an interview with Metal Master Kingdom: “It's still hard for me—the wound is deep. I was honored to be Ed's real friend, not just a guitar buddy. Our friendship lasted over 40 years. I love all the guys in VAN HALEN. I'm Switzerland when it comes to their relationships. I was just on Sammy's [Hagar] show, and he was great to me. Mike [Anthony] is always kind. But I've always stayed especially close with Al. Losing Ed left a hole in my heart that won't go away. We didn't just talk about guitars—we talked about our kids, our lives. Toward the end, we mostly just bragged about our sons. That's what mattered.” While Lukather's role in the VAN HALEN project remains undefined, one thing is clear—his deep respect for Eddie ensures the music's legacy will be handled with care. The Supergroup Eddie Van Halen Almost Created When David Lee Roth left Van Halen in 1985, the band's future was completely up in the air. Eddie Van Halen and his bandmates reached out to several singers to fill the role, but none accepted. These rejections led Eddie to explore new possibilities to keep his music career alive—one of which could have changed rock history forever. However, before this ambitious plan could materialize, Van Halen found their next frontman, Sammy Hagar. Before discovering Hagar, Eddie was uncertain about where his career was headed. With no clear path forward, he envisioned forming an '80s supergroup that could have been groundbreaking. In a 1996 interview with Guitar World, Eddie revealed details about this bold idea, explaining that he had spoken to some of rock's biggest names about joining forces. “My plan at the time—and I wouldn't necessarily have called it a solo record because Mike [Anthony] and Al [Alex Van Halen] would have played on it—was to get Mike Rutherford [Genesis], Pete Townshend, Phil Collins, and Joe Cocker, all of whom I had talked to,” Eddie said. He even had a specific vision for the project, including an early version of Right Now, which later became a hit for Van Halen. “I had written ‘Right Now' back then, and I wanted Joe Cocker to sing on it. It would have been f— great. That's what I wanted to do—write a record where I did all the music and had a different singer on each song,” he added. Despite the incredible potential, the project never got off the ground. Eddie admitted that logistical challenges—such as conflicting schedules, contractual obligations, and record label interference—made it nearly impossible. “Logistically, it would have been a nightmare—people on tour, contractual agreements, companies pissing and moaning—and we'd probably only be finishing it now,” he reflected. “It would have been fun.” Though Van Halen ultimately thrived with Sammy Hagar, it's fascinating to think about what could have been if Eddie's supergroup had become a reality. While we're grateful for the music Van Halen created with Hagar, this glimpse into Eddie's musical vision leaves us wondering about the alternate history that never happened.
