Patrick McKenzie (patio11) reads his 2021 essay "Payments in Japan," tracing how Japanese consumers navigate a landscape with dozens of competing payment methods at once: credit cards, electronic money, QR-code super apps, convenience-store cash vouchers, and bank transfers. Along the way he covers the JFTC's campaign to force credit card networks to disclose interchange rates, how Rakuten and 7-Eleven each bought a bank to solve a payments problem blocking their core business, why PayPay's subsidized 2018 launch let it run away with the QR code market, and why konbini payments remain popular despite a user experience frozen in the late 1990s.–Full transcript available here: https://www.complexsystemspodcast.com/japanpayments/ –Presenting Sponsors: Mercury & MongoDBComplex Systems is presented by Mercury—radically better banking for founders. Prediction markets aren't new. Election betting was common until the 1940s, then mysteriously faded away. There was an entire political era when party bosses were expected to conspicuously gamble on their candidates (even if they secretly hedged). And in the 1980s, a few economists designed an election market that beat out election polling 74 percent of the time.Today, we're running an excerpt from our friends at Throughline, NPR's excellent history podcast. The Holmes Archive of Electronic Music

Welcome to the podcast and thanks for listening. As I prepare a large batch of episodes to drop when the revision of my book Electronic and Experimental Music appears in August, I thought why not release a few additional episodes that have nothing to do with the book. I have a fairly large vault of original electronic works and figured that this might be a good time to share a smidgen of it. Each of these works comes from a place of experimentation. Most include vintage recordings as part of their overall texture. Many include original electronic sounds that I've composed for this purpose. In this episode, we will hear April Shortwave. I will let the music speak for itself. Thanks for listening and see you next time.

Expert in bass-heavy arsonism and heavily dubbed-out stunts, REEF resident Esposito clocks in with a most massive two-hour rollout of blazing riddims and stripped-down techno voodooism. Engineering a surgical mix of sub-fueled menace, steely horsepower and rattling drumwork on the prowl, Esposito has us submerged in an all-engulfing, woofer-busting blast of dub esotericism and prototypical UK bass assault. Dishing out a turbulent blend of aggressive machine funk, stormy breaks and liquid reverbs with unrelenting poise, bar after bar, the SPE:C affiliate fires off a much brutal reminder of why he's one of the best in the game when it comes to bridging dubstep and techno in the most volatile, hi-octane way possible.
