A Way with Words — language, linguistics, and callers from all over
How can you kick the verbal habit of saying You know and um so many times in a sentence? For one thing, get comfortable with pauses. There's no need to fill every silence during a conversation. Also, a doctor who treats patients in Appalachia shares their colorful vocabulary. If you have a rising in your leader or a misery in your jaw" you may want medical attention. Speaking of ailments, have you ever suffered from warbler neck? Birding enthusiasts get it from searching for hard-to-find species perched in treetops. Plus, mouthfeel, pan-pan, inkhorn terms, Hollywood anachronisms, dout, Werner Herzog's new memoir, an abecedarian puzzle, latibulate, agelastic, a word that means "to lick dishes," ordering a blue dolphin neat, and more. This week we chat with Kari Heggen, a bookstagrammer from Iowa who set herself a goal to read all the Newbery Award winners from the past 102 years. Originally she had planned to read 10 a year but she ultimately decided to just get her done. She read 49 of the winners in 2023 and got a jump start on 2024 by reading this year's winner, The Eyes and the Impossible by Dave Eggers. Kari talks about the highs and lows of her Newbery Award challenge. Books from the early days of the award were decidedly not great. But by the 1960s, Kari got into a better groove and found herself enjoying books for the first time and often the second time which brought back some childhood nostalgia. Blackbeard's Treasure by Jenny Dolly词汇提示1.pirate 海盗2.patch 眼罩3.scar 伤疤4.Bermuda Triangle 百慕大三角5.rubies 红宝石6.bartender 酒保原文Chapter I: Captain PikeIt was a dark and quiet night near the port, where all of the pirate ships stay before they sail. There were no lights on the street, and the only sounds were the laughing and singing behind the closed door of a bar called The Blue Dolphin.A man wearing a black pirate hat opened the door of the Blue Dolphin. He had a black patch over one eye and a scar on one side of his face.Everyone suddenly became quiet.A sailor at the bar asked the barman: "Who's that?""That is Captain Pike, the greatest pirate in all the world. They say he's stolen from the Queen of England, the King of France and the King of Spain."Captain Pike walked slowly around the tables looking closely at each man with his cold, grey eye.He had a very serious and cold way of talking."I'm looking for sailors and I need the best there are around."A big man in a white and blue shirt with a blue scarf around his neck stood up infront of Captain Pike."You won't find anyone stronger than I am, Captain. Tell me where to put my name and I'm ready to sail."Captain Pike looked into the man's eyes. His eyes were blue like the sea.Captain Pike's eye became narrower as he talked to the man."I'm sailing to the Bermuda Triangle to get Blackbeard's treasure."The man in front of him slowly sat down.Others began to whisper. The barman said to the sailor:"Nobody has ever found Blackbeard's treasure. They say it was lost somewhere in the Bermuda Triangle. All those who have tried to find it have never returned."Captain Pike continued to walk among the men.He knew it would be difficult to find men to go with him, so he talked about the treasure to excite them."They say there are diamonds as big as your nose; rubies, gold, pearls. Blackbeard was a pirate like us. It's in our blood. I'm sure he would want other pirates to have it."Suddenly a loud scream came from a dark corner near the stairs.Avery old man with thin white hair and a shining gold tooth walked out from the darkness to talk to the men.A large white bird sat on his shoulder."You don't know what you're saying! That treasure must always stay with Blackbeard's ghost, on his ship. It is his punishment for hurting the natives of the islands. Go to Rum Island. The natives there will tell you the story."Captain Pike looked down at the man, angry because he was trying to start trouble. He wanted to kill the man with his knife, but instead he reached into his coat and took a bag full of gold coins out of his pocket. He put it on one of the tables next to along white piece of paper he had."I've got one hundred gold coins here. I'll give one to every man that puts his name on this piece of paper and sails with me tomorrow, at midnight."The men forgot what the old man said when they saw the gold coins. They ran to sign their names.Captain Pike stared at the old man once more. The old man looked at him too, and left the bar with his bird.Captain Pike yelled to the bartender:"Bartender!Drinks for everyone! We sail tomorrow."

Would you read this to your child?'Island Of The Blue Dolphins' by Scott O'Dell is a fictional children's novel (loosely based on a real story) of a lone girl living on an island. Karana (12) has to fend for herself after being left behind by her tribe. She must use survival skills to weather through storms, feed herself and stay safe from wild dogs and other animals.I summarised the book as follows. "It's a nice and sad story at the same time. Ultimately it's made for kids so personally it didn't do that much for me. But there are lots of nice themes for kids to dig into and I could see this being a great launching point for fun topics of discussion."I hope you have a fantastic day wherever you are in the world. The event is a fundraiser for local charities and is set to make its return for the first time since the 4th of August, 2019. Rachael discussed how the idea for the event came about and highlighted what we can expect to see at the highly anticipated event. The event takes place on Saturday the 22nd of July, outside The Blue Dolphin on the main street. For more information you can visit their facebook at www.facebook.com/BlueDolphinKilkee.

In the game Animal Crossing New Horizons, you build yourself a home on an island, collect resources, catch fish, befriend your animal neighbors, and spend ridiculous amounts of free time crafting items. So Island of the Blue Dolphins is basically the story of that game in a real world setting. Karana does all these things and more, logging 18 years of play time as she survives alone on the island that is her ancestral home as she waits to be picked up to be reunited with her people. Andy, Harold, and Josh are here to talk about it as we wonder just what abalone tastes like? THE LINKS: Rate and review us on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and Audible! No one knew the real name of the woman living alone on San Nicolas Island, but when she returned to civilization after decades in solitude, she was a hit with the locals at the nearby mission. Known for her exuberance and friendliness, the religious authorities and townsfolk alike loved the woman they christened Juana Maria, but they knew next to nothing about her life -- because she spoke a language no one, from the missionaries to the native communities, could understand. I had the good fortune of sitting down with Matt and Jeff from The Jersey Shore Musician's Podcast. We shared a delicious home brewed stout and discussed everything from recording techniques, guitar styles, and wtf is wrong with Vince Neil to streaming, getting fired over twitter and what to do if a Rastaman locks you in a room. I even performed a few songs live and manage to mention Hank Williams about five times. I apologize in advance for all of the unbleeped F bombs and to the late great Blue Dolphin for blowing up the spot on the underage beers. In this week's episode, Katie is bewitched by the incredible survival story of Jose Salvador Alvarenga. In November 2012, Alvarenga headed out on a fishing trip despite warnings of a storm brewing. The routine trip soon turned life-threatening when engine failure and rough seas dragged Alvarenga and his mate, 22-year-old Ezequiel Cordoba, deep into the Pacific Ocean. For 438 days, Alvarenga survived at sea before washing ashore on the Marshall Islands. Alvarenga's survival is a story of incredible skill, intelligence, and sheer luck. In this episode we examine the psychological and physical obstacles Alvarenga overcame to become the first man to survive for over a year alone in the Pacific Ocean.
