On this week's Talkhouse Podcast, we've got two guys from different generations who've collided with big riffs in recent years: Tom Morello and Jordan Benjamin. Tom Morello is best known as the guitarist for Rage Against the Machine, which smashed together heavy music and activism in the 1990s, inspiring countless bands—some good, some bad, as he'll freely admit—to sprinkle some hip-hop into their rock. Morello went on to form Audioslave with Soundgarden's Chris Cornell and find a whole other area of success, but he didn't stop there: Morello goes wherever the muse takes him, from playing with Bruce Springsteen to doing acoustic sets as The Nightwatchman. He's always working on new music—and always outspoken politically. Morello tapped Jordan Benjamin to contribute to his 2021 single “Hold the Line,” which makes perfect sense, because the music that Benjamin records under the name Grandson is certainly inspired by Rage, among other artists of course. Grandson has been releasing records for the past decade or so, fusing hip-hop and alt-rock elements with unabashedly political lyrics. For his latest album under the Grandson name, Inertia, Benjamin leaned into a more organic rather than electronic sound—you'll hear him talk about the transition in this chat. Check out the song “God is an Animal” from Inertia right here. In this lively conversation, Morello and Benjamin talk about working together, about the magic of band chemistry, and about the “technological hellhole we find ourselves in.” It's still fun, though, check it out. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Jordan Benjamin and Tom Morello for chatting. Flea. This week on CounterSpin: Taylor Swift, Bruce Springsteen, Beyoncé and … Oprah? They're among the entertainers in Trump's sights for, it would seem, endorsing Kamala Harris in the election and, maybe, for saying something unflattering about him or his actions — which, in his brain, and that of the minions who've chosen to share that brain, constitutes an illegal political contribution to his opponents, wherever they may lurk. At a moment when politicians who swore actual oaths are throwing over even the pretense of democracy, or public service — or basic human decency — many of us are looking to artists to be truth-tellers and spirit lifters: to convey, maybe, not so much information as energy — the fearless, collective, forward-looking joy that can sustain a beleaguered people in a threatening time. There's a deep history of protest music and music as protest, and our guest is very intentionally a part of it. Tom Morello is a guitarist; part of Rage Against The Machine, Audioslave, Prophets of Rage and The Nightwatchman, among many other projects. His music has always been intertwined with his activism and advocacy for social, racial, economic justice. We talk about the work of artists in Trumpian times. Plus Janine Jackson takes a quick look at recent press coverage of the embassy shootings, a lawmaker's arrest, and commencement protests. The post Tom Morello on Music as Protest appeared first on KPFA.

And so as a mark of love and respect for his body of work we go through all of Soundgarden's full length releases and pick a favourite song from them. As a teenager, Chris Cornell was traumatized by a bad PCP trip that turned him into a recluse for years. Music pulled him out of the darkness when he discovered his four-octave voice by accident – A voice he used to incredible effect as the frontman for both Soundgarden and Audioslave. But the darkness never really went away – it was there in his hometown of Seattle, where tragedies closed the chapter on grunge, and in his music, which was authentic to the very end. Summary: “I'm sorry, what was that? No, the second part…the part that came after that…” METALCORE seems to be all over the place, in that its components are quite varied and cover a broad spectrum of everything that has historically made metal awesome: double bass drumming, guitar shred, breakdowns and mosh parts, and sometimes even some emo screaming and heartfelt vocals sung straight from the balls. Like a heavy metal jambalaya with a ton of different ingredients, METALCORE is the next wave of metal for a new generation of metalheads who want to enjoy a little bit of everything all at once. Be sure to stop “adulting” and remember that “when people lose their argument, they shift their whole stance”. Realize the darker connotations of saying “I did a thing today” and understand that Cory Hart wears his sunglasses at night because it's terrifying to be “blinded by the light”. Why do I feel so guilty, Slackers? In a recent podcast, Tom Morello and Billy Corgan discussed a number of topics, but when Billy talked about "Gen X not having a second act” and Tom said he had “Punk Rock Guilt”, this really struck a chord with me.Growing up in the ‘80s and ‘90s—amid economic flux, cultural cynicism, and punk's rebirth via hardcore and grunge — gave us a somewhat strange worldview. In 1989 Family Ties ended while Seinfeld just started to air. We went from wholesome to cynical in the blink of an eye.Morello talked about the uneasy feeling of raging against the system only to end up part of it - is that just an inevitable part of growing up or have we somehow let our younger, more idealistic selves down?As a parent I often wrestle with whether I have done the right things for my kids. And I certainly lament my restless, rudderless youth. This episode is a reflection on my own personal (and Gen X's) struggle to reconcile our hedonistic, yet oddly idealistic, youth with the quiet regrets of middle age.

Meet Dellacoma Rio, whose journey from the tennis courts of the US to embodying the legendary Michael Hutchence is a tale of resilience and passion. I had the pleasure of chatting with Dellacoma, who shared the unexpected twists of his career, including a detour into acting, a corporate stint as an operations manager, and the eventual call of music that he couldn't resist. Known for his striking resemblance to Michael, Dellacoma embraced this uncanny likeness, turning it into a tribute show that transcends mere imitation, offering fans an authentic INXS experience. From the unique video productions that recreate the grandeur of a Wembley-style concert, to the band's global performances in places like Dubai, India, and Japan, Del brings us into the heart of the incredible Australian INXS Tribute Show. We also touched on his band, Dellacoma, and their acoustic cover of Audioslave's "Like a Stone," giving us a glimpse of exciting new music slated for 2025. Wrapping up, we reflected on the deeper theme of striving for more than just survival, inspired by the powerful messages in his music. Tawny and Lisa discuss a recent essay in The Guardian titled I tried ‘intermittent sobriety'. Here's what I learned jumping on and off the wagon by Arwa Mahdawi. They appreciate the author's candid approach to harm reduction for the sake of self-discovery. Intermittent sobriety is similar to sober curiosity in that they both encourage thoughtful consideration in reevaluating one's relationship with alcohol without going fully sober. These booze-breaks can be regular, planned periods of sobriety or spontaneous decisions. Changing rituals, “playing the tape forward,” and spicy food-induced dopamine (!) are all suggested ways to help. On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by Brandon Saller of Atreyu. Over the past year, the Orange County metalcore vets have stayed furiously busy. In 2022, they put out an EP trilogy that began with The Hope of a Spark and continued with The Moment You Find Your Flame and A Torch In The Dark. Those releases culminated in the band's heavy but reflective ninth studio album, The Beautiful Dark of Life. Then, earlier this year, Atreyu unleashed The Pronoia Sessions — a 10-song collection that takes eight of their hits “to a whole new place” and features a pair of covers (Audioslave and Tom Petty). Listen to their conversation on Artist Friendly wherever you listen to podcasts.
