The Her Hoop Stats Podcast: WNBA & Women’s College Basketball

Shea Serrano (@SheaSerrano) of The Ringer has only been a women's basketball fan for around two years now, but he's all in!  The writer is known for his best selling books: The Rap Year Book, and Basketball (And Other Things).  In October he'll release his first hardcover offering, Movies (And Other Things).  We talk about his writing style, his awesome generous following, "The FOH Army," and of course his fandom of the Las Vegas Aces.   Acheil Tac (@BIG_A23) has a really neat story.  Born in Sudan, her family moved to Egypt when she was a child, then at age nine her family migrated to the U.S., settling in the Dallas area.  Tac first competed in the game of basketball as a freshman at Sachse (TX) High School, and blossomed into a Division I prospect.  After four years at the University of North Texas, Acheil moved on to play professionally in Switzerland.  But an injury caused her to take a year off from the game, and in that year, she wrote a book!  The Reality Behind the Glamour of College Athletics helps guide future college athletes through the recruiting process, playing career, and even post-collegiate career. Make sure to subscribe wherever you listen to your podcasts.  There's a new feature conversation every Monday, and in between you'll get some tremendous bonus content.  Please rate and review the broadcast to help others find it while we work diligently to grow the women's game. Shea Serrano, the author of the NY Times bestsellers “The Rap Yearbook” and “Basketball and Other Things” and a columnist for The Ringer, joins Brian this week. Shea talks about why writing books isn't much fun, but why he does it anyway. Shea talks about how the way he writes is influenced by his time as a teacher, how researching books is a lot of fun but the actual writing of a book is a lot of work, and how he goes from column idea to execution. Shea and Brian talk about who would win in a one-on-one basketball game between Michael Jordan and LeBron James, why they love 1990s NBA basketball, and why Coco was such a great movie. Shea also discusses the many successes of the FOH Army. This week, we’re thrilled to have an interview with New York Times bestselling author Shea Serrano. We ask him about his experience with the book-publishing process this time through, whether “experience” and “exposure” can pay bills for emerging writers or unpaid publishing interns (lol no), and of course, about his famous connection with his readers, the FOH Army. Separately, we also lead the show with a quick convo about TSA’s new policy of examining books in carry-on luggage.
