I've been lucky enough to be invited onto ‘The Social' (@TheSocialCTV) a few times. Do you know the show? It's like ‘The View', but Canadian, with four dynamic hosts sharing fast-paced opinions in a raucous, bombastic, high-energy exchange. Producers hand you the topics of the day about 30 minutes before you go on — formed by that morning's early headlines — and then it's time to form an opinion and get ready to, no big deal, share it live with millions of people a few minutes later. Definitely one of the most challenging jobs I've ever had and I can't tell you how much I admire people like Melissa Grelo, Cynthia Loyst, Lainey Lui, and Jess Allen, who do it day after day. Since I'm guest-hosting it's usually me onstage with three women — while one's away — and we end up having full-on laugh attacks. Well, one day, early in the pandemic, during the “live from everybody's basement” era, I showed up ready to go on and discovered I was one of *two* guest hosts. The other was Jully Black! Canada's R&B Queen. I'd heard of her but when the camera started rolling I fell in love. She was dynamic, bombastic, full of love, full of energy, and in the virtual green room after the show I invited her on 3 Books. (I knew she was a book lover because she'd been on Canada Reads — “the Survivor of Books” — a couple years before.) Well, after a few years of planning we finally pulled off our long-awaited live and in-person recording of 3 Books — up in Markham, Ontario, an hour north of Toronto — inside the 24-hour, 365-day-a-year, 68,000-square foot sauna and bath house Go Place (@goplace_toronto). I had never been but Jully was a regular so we put on our checkerboard paper shorts and shirts and lounged on a couple curvy chairs before hitting record (and before hitting the hot and cold rooms afterwards.) I think you'll find this as fascinating a conversation as I did. Jully is a true icon — named one of ‘The 25 Greatest Canadian Singers Ever' (CBC Music) with multiple singles reaching Top 10 pop, R&B, and dance music charts. She has sung for the Queen of England, she's been inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame, and, as you'll hear, she took the bold stance of changing the words to Canada's National Anthem on its largest global stage. Her activism wins praise, plaudits, and, yes, some poo-pooing, but if you know Jully — and you will soon if you don't! — she takes it all in stride and then she manifests another great day. She's somebody who is seemingly always vibrating on another level. Jully has been in the game for three decades, scoring her first record deal as a teenager, and collaborating with endless legends like Nas, Choclair, and Destiny's Child. She's an activist, award-winning musical theater star, community organizer, and much, much more. In this conversation Jully shares secrets of artistic longevity, thoughts behind her decision to change the lyrics of ‘O Canada' at the NBA All-Star game, her definition of allyship, how we learn to forgive ourselves, what a ‘blanket ceremony' is, how we navigate the death of our parents, her 3 most formative books (of course), and much, much more… Let's flip the page into Chapter 126 now... --- You can find show notes and more information by clicking here: https://www.3books.co/chapters/126 Leave us a voicemail. BEERS: If you are a grape soda lover, you'll love what Will just had at The Patio on Broadway in Providence. Grape by Evil Twin Brewing is a "soda-style" sour ale with milk sugar, grape syrup, and a fizzy texture...basically, a grape soda in beer form. Jake reviews a solid light pilsner, T-Shirt Weather, from Trustworthy Brewing Company's taproom location at The Venetian in Las Vegas, Nevada. BUSINESS: We cover a lot in this week's business segment. It's Prime Day, and all of a sudden it feels like everyone is in the party - Target, Walmart, and so many other big players are slashing prices left and right. We break down some of the best deals, and when it makes sense to get something on Prime. In quasi-business news, the New York Times announced their intention to strike their sports sections, replacing it with their talent from The Athletic, which they acquired last January. What does this mean for the sports journalism world in this time of rapid change? In a similar vain, layoffs are affecting ESPN - some of their top talent was canned over the past few weeks. We go over which sports outlets might snatch them up. BALLS (46.25): Curtis Oakley Jr. grew up with high expectations. The nephew of NBA All Star and 19-year veteran Charles Oakley, Curtis had basketball in his blood - the question became, where would it lead him? Curtis discusses his journey with basketball - from Charles Brush High School in the Cleveland area, to getting recruited by a small D1 school on a hill in Smithfield, Rhode Island. We discuss some of his favorite moments at Bryant, "The Shot Heard 'Round Smithfield," and getting to play against future NBA talent at UConn, Duke, and Indiana. Curtis, who is currently excelling in an NBA career as an analytics manager with the League Operations group, takes us through his decision to chase his dream in professional basketball, and what went into his decision to get involved in the NBA. We discuss his role with the up-and-coming Basketball Africa League, his dream job within the NBA, and advice for former college athletes that were once in his shoes. Fishing along the banks of the Cape Fear River with three co-workers and his teenage son, he walks away from the group and cries out to God in a desperate prayer for help. Suddenly, a UFO appears and saves his life and cures him of his illness. Experiencing four hours of missing time, he returns to his group to find them dismayed. Terrified, they run for their lives as several UFOs chase them home. This is the true story of hope, love, lies and deception, involving officials from the U.S. Government, CIA, NASA, a string of professors, and MUFON.Prepare to go on a spiritual journey of awakening and transformation with a visit from the Lady, remote viewing, assassination plot of the Pope, dripping orbs, a burning tree, the Monroe Institute, and healing the son of an elite Washington DC power broker with ties to the IC and the White House. 15 years on, the phenomena still visits the Bledsoe family and affects the lives of people who come in contact with them. To outsiders this can be seen as evil, but those who are willing to be open and accept it, it is a blessing. Are the events that are playing out around the world controlled and shaped by the Phenomena? The U.S. Government says UFOs are real. And millions of people believe GOD is real. So what do we do about UFOs and GOD? Mark 10:27 says, "All things are possible with God." So, UFOs must be interrelated with GOD if holding the scriptures to be true. It would be impossible to have one without the other.BioChris is a UFO experiencer and a strong believer in God. His life, now that his children are grown, is centered around telling his story and understanding why his experiences are increasing. He is passionate about keeping an open mind and engaging those who question who we are and why we are here. Most importantly he's working to understand the consciousness connection with UFOs and how it impacts his faith. Like most of us, he is driven to know the answer to the age-old question, "Are we alone?"
