Cameron Hörst recently completed the hardest route of his climbing career: Big Bone (5.15a/9a+), a king line out Utah's massive Fynn Cave. What makes his first ascent especially compelling isn't just the grade—it's the journey. Big Bone was a project that demanded years of training, 60+ working goes and redpoint attempts, countless setbacks, and a level of patience few climbers ever develop. In this episode of the Training for Climbing Podcast, Cameron unpacks the entire process. We dive into the physical, mental, and tactical challenges of working a multi-year project, the breakthroughs that finally moved the needle, and the lessons any climber can apply to their own long-term goals—whether you're projecting 5.10 or 5.15. One of the most fascinating takeaways is that the breakthrough wasn't a sudden gain in finger strength or power. Instead, it came from years of accumulated training adaptations, comprehensive energy system development, improved recovery, refined tactics, and learning when not to climb. Cameron shares how he finally broke through a plateau that had stalled his progress for multiple seasons. A regular nineteen-year-old with no criminal record stabbed his landlord to death with a pocketknife, then later claimed the demon he'd taunted into possessing him — instead of his fiancée's eleven-year-old brother — had crawled out of a well and into his body to commit the murder.EPISODE BLOG PAGE (includes sources and full transcript): https://weirddarkness.com/arnejohnsonREAD or DOWNLOAD the full transcript of this episode:https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/2p8n97s9FEATURED STORIES IN THIS EPISODE: The third Conjuring film is based on the true story of Arne Cheyenne Johnson who claimed he committed murder because a demon made him do it. But how much truth is there to that story? (The Devil Made Him Do It) *** A tribe living in the Amazon Jungle tells about a strange encounter they had with an extraterrestrial and a strange beam of light. (That Time An Alien Visited the Kayapo People) *** An elderly man decides he needs to hire someone to help him care for his property… but who he chose would bring only death and a mystery that still goes unsolved. (The Wonnangatta Station Murders) *** Lizard people. Reptilians. It's one of the strangest and most controversial conspiracy theories in existence – and we'll look at some of the history behind the idea, as well as what science says about the possibility of it being a reality. (The Myths and Modern Science of Reptilians) *** A nun who wasn't very good at being a nun ended up being a nun without a head. (The Headless Nun of Watton Priory) *** We've all been asked the question, “How do you want to die when it comes your time?” Aside from the boring but realistic answer of “quietly in my sleep” some would prefer to go out in a blaze of glory, doing something heroic to save a person or persons from imminent doom. But of course that does not happen for most of us. In fact, there are probably more people going out in a blaze of stupidity! (Dumbest Deaths) *** In 1995 Mike Marcum got it in his head to build a time machine. Did he succeed? We may never know – because he disappeared without a trace. Copyright ©2026, Weird Darkness.Originally aired: November 17, 2021Weird Darkness host Darren Marlar leads listeners through seven dark tales spanning a courtroom plea of demonic possession, an unsolved double murder on a remote Australian cattle station, an Amazon tribe's memory of a sky visitor, the serpent-race conspiracy of reptilians, a centuries-old English haunting, history's most absurd deaths, and a Missouri man who vanished after trying to build a time machine. It opens with the 1981 killing of forty-year-old landlord Alan Bono in Brookfield, Connecticut, the first murder in the town's 193-year history, committed by his nineteen-year-old tenant Arne Cheyenne Johnson with a five-inch pocket knife. Johnson's attorney Martin Minnella attempted a plea of not guilty by reason of demonic possession, tracing the violence to months of torment suffered by eleven-year-old David Glatzel, the brother of Johnson's fiancée Debbie, who described a tormentor with black eyes, animal features, and hooves. Paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren declared it a genuine possession and claimed David levitated and stopped breathing across three exorcisms overseen by priests, while psychiatrists countered that the boy had a learning disability. Judge Robert Callahan rejected the supernatural defense as unprovable, Johnson was convicted of first-degree manslaughter on November 24, 1981, and the case later inspired the film The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It.From there the episode travels to the remote Wonnangatta Station in Australia's Victorian Alps, where caretaker James Barclay hired English handyman John Bamford in 1917, a man rumored to have killed his own wife. After the two rode to Talbotville to vote on the Reinforcement Referendum in December 1917, mailman Harry Smith found the homestead empty but for the words "Home Tonight" chalked on the kitchen door, and weeks later he and Jack Jebb uncovered Barclay's decomposed body in a shallow creekside grave, dead from a shotgun blast to the back. The following November, Bamford's body surfaced in a log pile on the Howitt Plains with a bullet in the head, leaving investigators with a recently fired shotgun, traces of strychnine in the kitchen pepper, and no answer as to who killed the second man.Next comes the legend of the Kayapo people of the Brazilian Amazon, who tell of a sky visitor named Bep Kororoti who descended from the mountains of Pukato-Ti amid thunder, wielding a weapon that reduced trees and stones to dust and a beam of light that paralyzed anyone who fled his lessons. The being neither ate nor drank, taught the villagers practical skills, and eventually ascended back into the sky, and the account drew international attention when young Kayapo men touring Rio de Janeiro reportedly pointed at an Apollo 11 astronaut display and shouted that he had returned. Erich von Däniken cited photographs of Kayapo men in straw ritual costumes resembling spacesuits, taken by Joao Americo Peret in 1952, nearly a decade before Yuri Gagarin's 1961 spaceflight, as supposed support for the ancient astronaut theory. The discussion then turns to reptilians, tracing serpent-race myths found across Sumeria, Babylonia, India, China, and Mesoamerica, alongside the modern claims of David Icke that some humans are disguised lizard people. Set against the folklore, researcher Bjarke Jensen of Aarhus University lays out the actual biology: the human reptilian brain that governs heart rate and breathing, eyes structured much like a reptile's, and conductive heart tissue whose molecular building blocks Jensen's team located hidden in the spongy hearts of lizards, frogs, and zebrafish. The episode then visits Watton Priory in East Riding of Yorkshire, a Gilbertine community where, according to the twelfth-century account of Saint Aelred of Rievaulx, an orphaned girl named Elfleda fell in love with a young lay brother, was beaten and chained in a dungeon by the nuns, and was forced to watch as the man was mutilated. A second tragedy fastened itself to the same site after the 1644 Battle of Marston Moor, when Parliamentarian soldiers beheaded the Catholic Lady of Watton and killed her child, and over the centuries the two women blurred into a single spectral figure remembered as the Headless Nun, said to stand at the foot of the bed in blood-stained garments before vanishing. From there the show catalogs history's most absurd deaths, beginning with English Channel swimmer Matthew Webb, who drowned in the Niagara rapids in 1883, and the Spartan general Pausanias, sealed inside a temple of Athena and starved until he died moments after his release. The roll continues with Draco of Athens, smothered around 600 BC beneath cloaks and hats thrown in tribute; Sir Arthur Aston, beaten to death with his own wooden leg; the philosopher Heraclitus, who buried himself in cow dung hoping to cure his dropsy; lawyer Clement Vallandigham, who fatally shot himself in 1871 while demonstrating how a victim might have shot himself by accident; the Viking Sigurd the Mighty, killed by an infection from the sev

Erich Schaffer argues climate science contains major blunders, chiefly that water vapor cools the planet and provides negative feedback. He explains the greenhouse effect as determined by emission altitude and the adiabatic lapse rate, criticizing older “back radiation” explanations. He claims climate budgets and attribution studies overstate surface emission by assuming Earth's surface is a blackbody, ignoring water's non-Lambertian behavior and ~0.91 hemispheric emissivity, which he says inflates the greenhouse effect and misattributes missing radiation to water vapor. He highlights latent heat cooling and contends empirical “proxy” methods used to infer strong positive water-vapor feedback are invalid due to lapse-rate behavior. He concludes climate sensitivity would drop to ~1 K or less.00:00 Meet Erich Schaffer01:06 Why Climate Basics Matter04:52 Greenhouse Effect Explained07:30 Lapse Rate Physics10:52 IPCC Definition Shift12:38 Debunking Back Radiation16:04 Cloud Window Mistake19:25 Latent Heat Cooling20:40 Who Causes Warming31:04 Reading the Spectrum33:46 What CO2 Forcing Means37:03 Deriving 3.7 Wm241:41 Water Vapor Feedback Setup45:35 Models vs Observations46:57 Empirical Feedback Proxies51:10 Calculating Feedback From Slopes54:16 Super Greenhouse Tropics Claim56:52 Lapse Rate Versus Water Vapor58:45 Moist Adiabats And Latent Cooling01:00:58 Clouds Versus Water Vapor Paradox01:05:21 Water Reflectivity And Polar Amplification01:09:55 Infrared Emissivity Of Water01:15:01 Surface Emissions Overstated01:21:16 Reattributing The Greenhouse Effect01:28:30 Thought Experiments Removing Water Vapor01:34:26 Why Regional Proxy Fails01:40:24 Seasonal Proxy Broken By Inversions01:44:37 Sluggish Troposphere Explains Slopes01:49:33 Wrap Up And Next Partshttps://x.com/erich_schafferhttps://greenhousedefect.com/=========Slides, summaries, references, and transcripts of my podcasts: https://tomn.substack.com/p/podcast-summariesMy Linktree: https://linktr.ee/tomanelson1
In this inspiring new "Weekend Crushers" feature, I sit down with Florida-based climber Jessica Jenkins to unpack her incredible journey from a teenager climbing plastic in Orlando to recently sending her hardest route ever: the iconic Red River Gorge testpiece Swingline (5.13d). Her story is far more than a tale of grades and performance—it's a masterclass in resilience, adaptability, patience, and building a life that supports your passion even when circumstances aren't ideal. Whether you live far from outdoor climbing, struggle to balance work and family with training, or simply need a reminder that long-term consistency still wins, I think you'll find Jessica's story deeply motivating. Her journey proves that you don't need perfect circumstances to pursue extraordinary goals—you just need commitment, structure, and the willingness to keep showing up. Key Inspirational Takeaways for Climbers Living Far from Rock 1. Your location does not define your potential. Jessica proves that you do not need to live in Boulder, Salt Lake, or Chattanooga to become a high-level climber. Smart training, consistency, and strategic travel can close much of the gap. 2. Training with intention matters more than perfect access. Because she can't climb outdoors weekly, Jessica trains with incredible specificity—adjusting board angles, targeting pocket strength for Wyoming trips, and using power-endurance circuits to prepare for the Red River Gorge. 3. Passion fuels discipline. Long drives, limited outdoor mileage, inconsistent weather, and balancing work obligations would discourage many climbers. But Jessica's love for climbing continues to drive her effort year after year. 4. Progress is rarely linear. Even highly prepared climbers experience setbacks, regressions, injuries, and emotional struggles. Near-sends and failures are often part of the process—not signs that the goal is impossible. 5. Build a life that supports your passion. Jessica intentionally shaped her career and lifestyle around climbing freedom. Rather than waiting for ideal circumstances, she created systems that allowed climbing to remain central in her life. 6. Long-term consistency beats short-term intensity. Jessica's breakthrough wasn't the result of one magical training cycle. It was built over 16 years of climbing, coaching, learning, traveling, and steadily improving. 7. Community matters. The interview highlights how supportive partners, climbing friends, coaches, and mentors can make a huge difference—especially for climbers who live far from outdoor destinations. ⭐ Enjoy the podcast?

Questions? Thoughts? Send a Text to The Optometry Money Podcast! We'll answer your question on the show.Whether you're five to ten years from exiting your optometry practice or just starting to think about it, the decisions you make right now have a major impact on what your practice is ultimately worth. In this episode, Evon is joined by Erich Mattei of Akrinos — a returning guest who specializes in practice transitions and valuations — to break down the key levers practice owners should be focused on long before they're ready to sell. From profitability and expense benchmarks to payor mix, capital expenditure, and add-backs, this conversation gets into the mechanics of how fair market value is actually determined and what you can do to improve it.What You'll LearnHow fair market value for an optometry practice is determinedThe two primary drivers of practice value: profitability and capital expenditureKey expense benchmarks for COGS, occupancy, non-doctor payroll, and general overheadWhy growing revenue matters — and why growing the right revenue matters even moreHow payor mix and cash pay percentage affect practice value and buyer negotiationWhat add-backs are and why minimizing seller discretionary spend before exit is criticalHow associate doctors and full-time equivalent coverage factor into valuationWhy outdated equipment can undermine an otherwise profitable practiceKey TakeawayThe time to prepare your practice for sale is long before you're ready to sell. The ODs who get the most at exit are the ones who ran their businesses like a business — with clean financials, controlled expenses, growing revenue through the right channels, and a practice that a buyer can step into with confidence.ResourcesErich Mattei / Akrinos: contact@akrinos.comAkrinos 360 Due Diligence Resource — reach out to Erich directly or contact Evon at podcast@optometrywealth.comAkrinos WebsitePodcast Ep 50: Guide to Due Diligence on Practice Purchases with Erich MatteiPodcast Ep 80: Intro to Optometry Practice Valuations with Erich MatteiWant a more proactive approach to your planning? You can schedule a no-commitment introductory call to discuss what's on your mind financially and learn how we help optometrists navigate those same decisions nationwide.
In this Huberman Lab Essentials episode, my guest is Dr. Erich Jarvis, PhD, a professor and Head of the Laboratory of Neurogenetics of Language at Rockefeller University and an investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI). We discuss the brain circuits and genes underlying spoken language and why the ability to learn and produce vocalizations is extraordinarily rare in the animal kingdom. We also explore why song likely evolved before language, how gesture and movement share deep neural roots with speech, the neurobiology of stuttering, why childhood is the optimal window for language acquisition, and how physical movement — including dance — may help preserve speech and cognitive function across a lifetime. In today's episode, you'll discover: 1. How modern sales leaders can build high-performing teams, leverage communication data, and create scalable systems that drive consistent revenue growth. 2. By coaching your reps on optimizing conversations with AI-driven insights, you will learn practical strategies to help your organization thrive in a competitive market. 3. How companies can scale their sales efforts without losing personalization. To support these three takeaways, I chose a quote from Barney Brown: "We're using this term artificial intelligence, but in the role of selling and in our relationships, nothing about that relationship should be artificial. It should be genuine. So how we're thinking about it is how do we use generative AI to help our account teams become more effective and productive, so they can double down on their interpersonal and relationship skills." WHEN THE Vice President of the United States mentions aliens and demons in the same sentence, you know we've entered a new era. J. D. Vance recently told podcaster Benny Johnson he doesn't believe ETs are aliens, he thinks they're demons. Needless to say, that drew a lot of snarky comments from the media, even though the vice president isn't entirely wrong. Then Johnson, who seems to be asking all his guests about the UFO/UAP phenomenon these days, heard this from former Florida congressman Matt Gaetz: “I had someone come and brief me who was in a military uniform, worked for the United States Army, that was briefing me on the locations of hybrid breeding programs where captured aliens were breeding with humans to create some hybrid race that could engage in intergalactic communication. An actual uniformed member of the United States Army briefed me on that.” Gaetz claimed the man told him that the secret program forced extraterrestrials in custody to mate with humans who'd been abducted from war zones or “from caravans with migrants.” Gaetz admitted he hadn't verified the whistleblower's claims, but said he was told there were between six and 12 breeding facilities around the country. This reminded us of the breeding program in the film Alien vs. Predator, in which humans were used to incubate the monstrous aliens from the film franchise at a secret lair under the ice in Antarctica. The imagery in that film borrows heavily from the horror fiction of author H. P. Lovecraft, whose work was, probably not coincidentally, the inspiration for Erich von Däniken's Chariots of the Gods? Derek documented the links between Lovecraft and von Däniken in the recent book Destination: Earth, which we excerpted at our Substack page last year (GilbertHouse.substack.com). We are skeptical. Biologically, a breeding program between wildly incompatible species makes no sense. Technologically, the barriers to crossing vast distances of space are not understood by those of us who aren't astrophysicists or aerospace engineers. Let's just say that hyperspace, warp drive, and wormholes are science fiction – emphasis on fiction. Our take is that this is another example of the military-intelligence complex controlling the UFO narrative, as it's done since 1947. Not coincidentally, we are just two months away from the release of the new Steven Spielberg UFO/ET movie, Disclosure Day. We also discussed the mystery of eight dead or missing scientists over the last two years, all connected to some aspect of aerospace engineering or astronomical science. This reminds us of a mystery we talked about often in the early days of this podcast, going back to 2005, of scientists in the fields of molecular biology and genetics going missing or turning up deceased. What is the cause of these mysterious deaths and disappearances? We can only speculate. However, the fact that at least two of the recent disappearances left home without their phones – and in one case, phones were wiped, clean through factory reset – points to abductions. It seems unlikely that anyone leaving home of their own accord, especially those known as avid hikers, would do so without their phone. Here is the link to the list of dead and missing scientists between 2004 and 2015 at Steve Quayle's website.

When Erich Bergen, who played Blake Moran for six seasons on “Madam Secretary” was asked to audition for the role of John F. Kennedy Jr. in “Love Story” (new episodes air Thursdays at 9pm ET/PT on FX, streaming the next day on Hulu) he decided to pass. Luckily he was cast as Anthony Radziwill, best friend and cousin to JFK Jr. Erich talks with me about the challenges of playing a real-life character; growing up in NYC in the 1990s during the height of the city's obsession with Carolyn and John-John; the magic of shooting on-location in the same places the power couple existed in, and how he prepares for eight-shows-a-week as a song-and-dance man on Broadway. Separate Outcomes from Identity Results are feedback—not a judgment of your worth. Treat success and failure like a scientist treats data: information that helps guide your next attempt. 2. Care Deeply, But Stay Detached Commit fully to preparation and effort, but let go of rigid expectations. Peak performance happens when you care—but remain mentally loose. 3. Widen Your Perspective Fear narrows perception. When frustration or anxiety creeps in, step back and consider the bigger picture of your climbing journey. 4. Recognize Self-Sabotage Many self-defeating behaviors stem from fear of failure. Notice the pattern and commit fully—remove the escape routes. 5. Design Your Environment Your surroundings influence behavior more than willpower. Set up your environment so good choices become automatic. 6. Build Confidence with Evidence Confidence comes from past effort and experience. Remember the training sessions, challenges, and setbacks you've already overcome. 7. Stay Calm Under Pressure True toughness is the ability to make clear decisions when stress rises. Pause, breathe, and choose the next smart action. 8. Align Effort with Purpose Grinding through pain isn't always productive. Growth comes from intentional stress followed by proper recovery. 9. Pursue Mastery, Not Just Metrics Grades and performance numbers are useful indicators—but mastery of movement, skill, and understanding is the real long-term goal. 10. Break Plateaus with Novelty When progress stalls, change something. Train in a new place, climb with new partners, or modify your routine to spark fresh momentum. 11. Choose Tradeoffs Intentionally You can't do everything at once. Decide what matters most this season and accept the tradeoffs required to pursue it. 12. Consistency Beats Intensity Big breakthroughs rarely come from a single heroic effort. Progress is built through consistent, focused sessions over time. 13. Use Checkpoints Break large goals into smaller, achievable steps. Mini-goals provide feedback, motivation, and a sense of progress. 14. Find the Performance Sweet Spot The best training happens just beyond comfort—but short of overwhelm. When challenge and skill align, the flow state emerges. 15. Recovery Completes the Cycle Stress only drives adaptation when it's followed by recovery. Prioritize sleep, nutrition, rest days, and periodic deloads. Final Thoughts Climbing your best isn't just about strong fingers or hours spent training. It's about bringing together physical preparation, mental resilience, and strategic decision-making. The tips in this episode are simple—but powerful when practiced consistently. Show up prepared, stay curious, remain patient with the process, and keep refining your approach. Over time, those small improvements compound—and the sends will come. ⭐ Enjoy the podcast? Leave a 5-star review on Apple Podcasts and share this episode with a climbing partner! by UFO History Buff & Author, Charles Lear For many people growing up in the 1970s (of which this writer is one), seeing a UFO documentary was their first in-depth look into the subject. These films often came along with books tied in, and major publishers such as Bantam were getting onboard. More and more people were willing to accept the idea that UFOs were worthy of serious consideration, and this meant that more and more people were willing to spend money on movies and books covering the subject. What had formerly been mostly confined to a subculture of enthusiasts, was now becoming a somewhat profitable entertainment industry. Indeed, it may come as a surprise to some readers, but between the summer of the saucers in 1947, and 1968, there were only two documentaries made in the midst of all the science fiction saucer films that became popular starting in the 1950s.The beginning of the 1970s wave of UFO documentaries can be traced back to the 1968 book Erinnerungen an die Zukunft (Memories of the Future) by Erich von Däniken published by Econ-Verlag in West Germany. The book not only whetted the public's appetite for UFOs and aliens (especially ancient ones), but opened up the doors for all things strange and mysterious, including Bigfoot, the Bermuda Triangle, ghosts, and lake monsters.
