Forensic Genetic Genealogy (FGG) stands at the frontier of criminal justice, offering new hope for cases that have remained unsolved for decades. This groundbreaking conversation takes us inside the Center for Human Identification (CHI) at the University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth - the first public lab in the nation providing comprehensive FGG services to law enforcement. In this episode, Robert Moore, Director of the Investigative Support Unit, explains how this technology is revolutionizing criminal investigations by comparing crime scene DNA to profiles in public genealogy databases. The process has breathed new life into cold cases across Texas, particularly benefiting smaller agencies with limited resources. With 254 counties in Texas and many police departments averaging just 18 officers, CHI's free DNA testing services provide a lifeline for investigations that might otherwise remain unsolved. The most powerful moments in this conversation come from genealogist Susan Davis, who shares her personal journey as both a sexual assault survivor and genetics expert. Her vulnerability in discussing her own 1981 attack by a serial predator underscores the human impact of this technology. "Had FGG been available then," she reflects, "it would have saved lives and prevented other women from suffering similar attacks." Her story illustrates how science can transform trauma into purpose—Davis now spends her days identifying perpetrators in hours rather than the years it often took traditional methods.Through compelling case studies, including that of a serial rapist identified in just five hours after decades evading justice, we witness the transformative potential of genetic genealogy when placed in capable hands. The conversation reflects both scientific precision and profound human compassion for victims who have waited far too long for answers.

In this episode of the CCPT Purism series, I focus on Garry Landreth and the essential role he played in shaping modern Child-Centered Play Therapy. While Rogers, Axline, and the Guerneys laid the philosophical and practical groundwork, Landreth gave the model a clear identity—naming it, defining it, and defending it. I share how his unwavering commitment to purity of the model continues to shape the way we teach, train, and practice CCPT today. I also reflect on my personal CCPT lineage and how Landreth's influence shaped my journey, as well as yours. From founding the Center for Play Therapy at UNT to writing The Art of the Relationship, Landreth's contributions gave CCPT its structure, its language, and its staying power. This episode is a tribute to the legacy we all share—and a reminder to keep asking ourselves whether we are truly living the model with trust, presence, confidence in the model, and commitment to the relationship. The news of Texas covered today includes:Our Lone Star story of the day: Senator Bryan Hughes is working to get Texas back to sanity with its Attorney General's office prosecuting election crimes as it did since 1951 before a stupid, ignorant ruling from the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals in 2021. This is greatly needed but will a good bill move in the Texas House? The same crowd is in charge in the House to setup the sham impeachment of A.G. Paxton and nothing indicates those folk have stopped their efforts to politically destroy the conservative attorney general. Our Lone Star story of the day is sponsored by Allied Compliance Services providing the best service in DOT, business and personal drug and alcohol testing since 1995.Wind, wind, and more wind.

In Episode 24 of Counsel Brew, we're uncorking an extraordinary story—one that blends legal brilliance, mentorship, and a touch of vineyard magic. Meet Rebecca Greenan, an attorney turned vintner, whose journey has taken her from shaping legal minds to cultivating grapevines at Las Huertas de Tejas, a vineyard that honors her Spanish and Irish roots.Rebecca has spent years mentoring law students and young attorneys, bringing warmth, wisdom, and a legendary smile to every room she enters. A few days before Christmas in 1984, 26-year-old David Dale Larson and 21-year-old Regina Suzanne Grover went out for a dinner date at The Keg Restaurant and Bar off Camp Bowie in Fort Worth, Texas. Service industry workers themselves, they knew folks at The Keg, and those folks saw Regina and David leave around 11 PM. It was the last time they were seen alive. The following afternoon, David Larson's roommate discovered his nude and badly bludgeoned body in their apartment just southwest of downtown Fort Worth. Minutes later, a discovery was made in northwest Fort Worth. On the bank of a river under a bridge, covered with illegally dumped furniture, was the body of Regina Grover. She'd been strangled to death. Police lumped Regina's murder in with several others that would eventually become known to locals as “The 80s Murders,” and David's murder, which separated the case from the others in a major way, was often left out. Detectives never got a break on Regina and David's case, but decades later, when a 1974 murder was solved, similarities never before noticed became hard to ignore. If you have any information about the murders of David Dale Larson and Regina Suzanne Grover, please contact the Fort Worth Police Cold Case Unit at (817)392-4307, or you can provide information by emailing coldcase@fortworthpd.com.You can support Gone Cold – Texas True Crime and listen to the show ad-free at patreon.com/gonecoldpodcastFind us at https://www.gonecold.comFollow gone cold on Facebook, Instagram, Threads, TikTok, YouTube, and X.
