The Lakers' preseason is officially in the books after a 116-112 loss to the Sacramento Kings, the sixth loss in as many tries before the real games begin. (ALL HAIL 0-6!!!) But that last go-around wasn't entirely negative. To begin, this was arguably the best individual game each for LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Russell Westbrook, and without question their best as a trio. For that matter, DeAndre Jordan (in by far his best showing as a Laker), Carmelo Anthony, Dwight Howard, and Austin Reaves all enjoyed some nice moments. On balance, it was the best the Lakers have looked, period. That said, as one might expect after a loss, it also wasn't all peaches and cream, especially on the defensive end, where the Lakers remain somewhere between "inconsistent" and "a flat out mess." Plus, the health of several important players is still unknown, and the already low continuity from last year has been exacerbated. So what are the Kamenetzkys' big takeaways from the preseason, and how ready do they think the team is for the regular season to kick off next week? They discuss. Plus, praise for Reaves, and a PSA of sorts about Jordan. Hosts: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: A recap of the final preseason game, and in particular, Westbrook's night and progress with the Lakers. SEGMENT 2: How ready do the Lakers seem for the season to begin? SEGMENT 3: A plea to stop complaining about Jordan every second he's on the court. Plus, can Reaves actually hang in an NBA rotation? Tuesday's preseason loss to Warriors didn't just present the first look at the Lakers' Big Three of LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Russell Westbrook. It raised the question of who should start alongside that trio of All-Stars. Granted, Frank Vogel's hands are a bit tied at the moment, given all the players who are shelved with injuries. But could Kent Bazemore and Carmelo Anthony, the two filling out Tuesday's lineup, fit the bill moving forward? Bazemore feels like a lock by now, but Melo? More debatable. So the Kamenetzkys do just that. What are the pros and cons of the future Hall of Famer vs. Wayne Ellington, Kendrick Nunn or other looks? Whatever the rotation chosen, how much fun will the Lakers actually be to watch? ESPN's Zach Lowe offered up some thoughts in a recent column, and the Kamenetzkys react to his assessment. Finally, undrafted two-way player Austin Reaves has been turning heads of late with some unexpectedly un-rookie play. Is he a viable option once games actually count? Hosts: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: What's the best starting lineup for the Lakers, and does it include Melo? SEGMENT 2: On a pure "fun" scale, how enjoyable will the Lakers be? LeBron, Davis and Westbrook Finally Take The Floor Together: What Worked, What Didn't?

At long last, the Lakers' Big Three finally played a game together! Even with the caveat of it being the first non-practice run, and that half of the rotation was missing (no exaggeration), LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Russell Westbrook playing together is by definition a "thing." As such, there were takeaways from Tuesday's loss to the Golden State Warriors at Staples Center. The Kamenetzky Brothers break down what looked good with the trio, and what was less encouraging. Plus, it was another good showing from Davis, who seems seriously determined to bounce back from a subpar season. In the meantime, there is a predictable (if silly) urge by the media to get a more concrete idea of how long it will take for this team to truly jell. But as Westbrook candidly (and honestly) acknowledged, nobody truly knows the answer, and throwing out arbitrary markers is pointless. As he also noted, the answer isn't likely "opening night," and that's legitimately fine. All the veterans from Westbrook to LeBron to Carmelo Anthony have reinforced the idea of this season as a process that requires patience, communication and the ability to speak frankly to each other. Assuming that accountability is there, everyone appears confident that the larger and smaller details will eventually work themselves out. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Thoughts on how the big three looked together, and their collective effect on the offense. SEGMENT 2: More signs that Davis really, really wants to reestablish himself as a truly elite superstar. SEGMENT 3: The importance of process. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Another day, another Lakers preseason loss. This time, it was 123-94 spanking at the hands of the Phoenix Suns, a continuation of a themes seen since training camp opened. The Lakers were shorthanded (Trevor Ariza, Talen Horton-Tucker and Malik Monk are injured, while LeBron James opted not to suit up), and the play on both sides of the ball was, shall we say, erratic. And the final score reflected a general lack of cohesion. Not that there were no positives to speak of. Anthony Davis played his best game of the preseason, and seems to be rounding steadily into form, whether in terms of his offensive aggression or his defensive impact. Carmelo Anthony connected on five three-pointers. And Kent Bazemore was a quintessential "three-and-D" player (particularly the "D" part, where he was quite disruptive to Phoenix's schemes). As raggedy as the game was, those three stood out with positive contributions. On the other hand, Russell Westbrook was pretty brutal, whether as a scorer or running the offense. Only three of his twelve shots fell, and those nine missed shots were matched with nine turnovers. To be clear, a big issue appears to be timing and a lack of familiarity with so many new teammates, which is to be expected to some degree. If anything, Westbrook may have been periodically overcompensating trying to move the ball around. Still, he's been a turnover machine in two preseason appearances, and it's still not entirely clear what his role is when he's not in charge of the ball. Then again, it's not entirely clear the Lakers have been getting the most from this preseason, anyway. Hosts: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Kamenetzkys begin the show with the positive elements from the loss: AD. Melo. Bazemore (who seems to have cemented his case to start). SEGMENT 2: Game #2 for Russ? He's clearly trying hard to involve his teammates, but hooo boy... SEGMENT 3: Have the Lakers been getting everything out of the preseason they want? It's felt a bit concerning that training camp has yet to include the participation of veteran forward Trevor Ariza, who'd been dealing with a sore ankle. Well, the mood just shifted from "concerning" to "alarming." The Lakers announced shortly after Wednesday's 117-105 preseason loss to the Phoenix Suns that Ariza underwent an arthroscopic debridement procedure, and is expected to miss at least two months. Ariza may not be the most important member of the team, nor was he necessarily expected to play huge minutes this season. But they did anticipate the minutes Ariza played to be important ones, whether as a starter, a closer, or a bit of both. Plus, Ariza was among the few players on the roster lacking true small forwards who at least *sort of* fit the bill. As such, a thin position just grew more depleted. Where do the Lakers go from here, whether in terms of the rotation or potentially adding a player to the roster? Those questions get answered, as well as first impressions of Carmelo Anthony, following his preseason debut. Hosts: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: How will Trevor Ariza's absence affect the Lakers' rotation? Does it force Frank Vogel to commit to going big... or going small? SEGMENT 2: With Ariza sidelined, do the Lakers have to use their open fifteenth roster spot? SEGMENT 3: Melo finally dons a Laker uni. How did he look, and what will his role be? The Lakers got on a plane to Phoenix Tuesday for their second preseason game. This one will feature Anthony Davis and Carmelo Anthony - "the two Anthony's," as Frank Vogel called them - but not LeBron James or Russell Westbrook. And while Vogel didn't give any indication of how he's leaning when it comes to a starting lineup to open the year, he did respond to one of the big questions kicked around on Tuesday's show: Could he mix and match around the Big Three, based on matchups? In short, no. And he explained. From there, it's the annual GM survey, where the league's big execs weigh in on the most important questions surrounding players and teams heading into the 2021-22 season. What stuck out? How about some intense respect for the quality LeBron still brings at age 37, entering his 19th season. And the flip side? Davis was conspicuously absent from many categories where he appeared an offseason ago. What does it say about what's at stake for Davis this season, and what might be motivating him? Finally, Pau Gasol announced his retirement Tuesday, capping off a brilliant, Hall of Fame career. Incredible player, incredible human. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Frank Vogel says he wants consistency in his lineups, and NBA GM's pick the Nets to win it all (over the Lakers, who are the consensus runner-up). SEGMENT 2: What do the results of the GM survey say about LeBron, in year 19? What about Davis? Why isn't he given more love in these results? The Lakers finally made their long-awaited return to the basketball court on Sunday afternoon in their preseason opener against the Brooklyn Nets. While the players who did not play -- LeBron James, Russell Westbrook, Carmelo Anthony, Kyrie Irving, James Harden, Kevin Durant -- were far more notable than the ones that did, the excitement was still all the same in the purple and gold's return to action after exactly four months off over the summer. Today's edition of "Can U Dig It?" features Jacob and Christian sharing their thoughts on what was ultimately a blowout win for the Nets, 123-97. They discuss the big performance from Malik Monk, the host of young backcourt players the Lakers have including Kendrick Nunn and Talen Horton-Tucker and whether Sunday's performance could factor into the Lakers starting Anthony Davis at center. With so much talent in the backcourt, does it make more sense for the Lakers to play small more this season? They also discuss the frontcourt, including Davis' one quarter of action on the night. After a frustrating 2020-21 season, Davis looks refocused and re-energized, albeit through just one quarter of one game. The two also give their first impressions of the two centers on the Lakers roster and how they fared in their first performances of the season. The pair also touch on the likes of Wayne Ellington, Kent Bazemore and Rajon Rondo, all who made returns to the Lakers this summer. Learn more about your ad choices. Frank Vogel recently said no lineup decisions have been made yet and that they're going to wait and see what comes of training camp to decide on that matter. He also made a comment that Rajon Rondo would essentially replace Jared Dudley in the locker room and not play as much this season, while also revealing that Talen Horton-Tucker (THT) has been challenged to step up and be "that guy" on the defensive end. Lakers GM Rob Pelinka also spoke to media recently and discussed how he feels the Lakers have done this offseason. We believe the best investment you can make is in yourself - your human capital. Our guest, Fabrice Gautier, has created outsized returns for some of the world's best athletes like Rudy Gobert, Giancarlo Stanton, Kevin Love, Carmelo Anthony, Tony Parker, and more, and he has served as the French National Basketball team's osteopath since 2009.Described by Kevin Love as “the swiss army knife when it comes to optimizing your health and performance,” Fabrice is a licensed physical therapist and osteopath who has been particularly noteworthy for his approach of viewing an injury not just as an injury, but looking at the comprehensive solution to resolve the root issue causing that injury, which requires assessing the full person – body, mind, soul. Ultimately, the goal is to address the problem, not the consequence.Fabrice joins Erik and Brandon and covers a range of helpful topics from his experience discussing everything from how he's seen some of the best athletes build out the teams that surround them, to finding the root of chronic injuries, and why he thinks a strength and conditioning coach and a chef are the two most important people to have on your team.EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS(1:47) Seeing the person; not a patient(6:07) The European vs American approaches to physical therapy(10:11) When should someone show up in Fabrice's office?(14:28) How should an athlete handle building out the team that surrounds them?(20:29) The importance of having a plan(23:24) How should a new athlete just starting out approach building a core team that can help keep him or her healthy throughout their career?(28:54) The importance of investing in yourself(30:49) Why you need a chef – and maybe even a masseuse(33:31) Is lifestyle assessment becoming more normal in the performance space?(39:20) At the end of the day, it takes hard work(42:35) Learning from other sports

Wednesday's podcast with Doug Norrie from Locked On Nets offered a lot of clarity regarding new Lakers center DeAndre Jordan, and what he still brings to the table, even while no longer in peak form. He's an imperfect player, and those flaws ultimately made him untenable for the style of the Brooklyn Nets, his former team. But for the Lakers' style, he might be just fine. Not incredible, not terrible, but fine. For Brian Kamenetzky, this was reassuring as someone who was pretty down on the acquisition. For Andy Kamenetzky, it was a reminder that deep stats and analytics are definitely useful, but also potentially misleading without context. Plus, the Lakers are working out Kenneth Faried? Really? Like... really? The Kamenetzkys also discussed a bonus segment with Norrie about the Nets' mega-offense, and how they'll look to smother opponents in points. Is it a coincidence that the Lakers, expected by most to face Brooklyn in the Finals, loaded up on offensive talent this summer? Or was it merely indicative of a pre-existing need to juice the offense, regardless of Brooklyn's firepower? Or a bit of both? And finally, Carmelo Anthony has been making the rounds promoting his new book, Where Tomorrows Aren't Promised: A Memoir of Survival and Hope. Among the many interesting thoughts shared during an interview in Esquire, Melo explained why, despite a close friendship with Kobe Bryant, teaming up in 2014 wouldn't have worked. Beyond the Lakers being Kobe's franchise, Los Angeles were "his city." That's just not an ideal setting for another superstar, much less one in his prime. It speaks to why the Kamenetzkys have said for years (and in the moment) that finding a superstar to play alongside Kobe was such a complicated venture. Hosts: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Thoughts on Norrie's better-than-expected scouting report on DeAndre Jordan. SEGMENT 2: Did the Lakers revamp their roster with Brooklyn specifically in mind? SEGMENT 3: Melo talks Kobe and the Lakers, circa 2014. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!
