For 24 minutes on Friday, it looked like the Lakers might distract from the chaos of the last few days by losing to the Orlando Magic (who have won twice this year at home... twice) and getting Frank Vogel fired. After a listless first half, though, the Lakers bounced back with a dominant final two quarters, and walked away with an easy win. It helped that they made adjustments at halftime, adding Stanley Johnson to the lineup and switching everything, which basically shut down Orlando's attack completely. It helped that Carmelo Anthony went nuts in the second half, and that LeBron James and Russell Westbrook both played well. But really, that's not what people were focused on. The story of the day, and the night, was Westbrook's reaction to getting benched down the stretch in Wednesday's loss to Indiana. The report from Woj that quoted Westbrook and got some insight into his reaction (remember, he didn't speak to the media after the loss), Vogel's pregame comments and everything everyone said after. It does appear, for now at least, that any big fallout has been averted. That doesn't mean Westbrook liked the choice, or would react well should Vogel pull that lever again. (Nor would you expect him to.) It doesn't mean their relationship hasn't shifted in important ways. But it does mean that the Lakers are out of a dangerous space and can try to steer the conversation back to all the other bits of crisis management that have beset this year's squad... The first release of All-Star voting is always a fun day in the NBA, especially for two guys who are not at all precious about who gets in or who might not (like say the hosts of this show). So seeing Carmelo Anthony cracking the top 10 among Western Conference forwards despite not playing at an All Star level? Whatever! If that's what the fans want, all good. Frankly, it's disappointing to see that Lakers fans couldn't give Austin Reaves the Alex Caruso treatment, and push him into the Top 10 among W.C. guards. Bigger Issue: Russell Westbrook (due to play) and Anthony Davis (due to availability) may not be on the team. And for a squad built around All Stars, that helps explain why the Lakers have been mired around .500 all year. From there, Frank Vogel and Dwight Howard talked about sacrifice as more guys come back to the roster. There will be guys currently playing significant roles who will have to sit as Kendrick Nunn, Stanley Johnson, and (eventually) Davis are all brought back into the rotation. It'll make things go much more smoothly if the team can win games while this happens. Finally, LeBron James responded to questions about Kevin Porter Jr., and Wednesday's moment at the end of the Houston/Wizards game, where Washington's analyst committed a horrible error calling Porter Jr.'s game winning shot. It was a fascinating moment, where LeBron laid out why that mistake mattered so much. Much of it was centered around media accountability and professionalism. Hard to argue with any of it. Strike up the band! After five straight losses, including a Christmas day loss so infuriating fans and media were relocating Russell Westbrook to Houston, Philadelphia or anywhere else the rumor mill deemed just feasible enough, the Lakers are finally off the schneid! Tuesday saw them beat a scrappy (if hapless) Houston Rockets squad 132-123, in a game that was too competitive for true comfort, but not without some interesting facets. To begin, interim head coach opted for a new starting lineup with Talen Horton-Tucker coming off the bench, Malik Monk and newbie Stanley Johnson at the forward sports, and LEBRON JAMES starting at center. (He also limited the rotation to just eight players, none of whom were true bigs.) The team in turn responded with their best offensive showing in a while. 20+ points from Monk and Carmelo Anthony. Triple-doubles for LeBron and Westbrook. And while Fizdale emphasized how this was not necessarily a permanent look moving forward, it's pretty clear we'll be seeing a lot of small ball in the Lakers' future. And until Anthony Davis returns, it appears a huge chunk of the center minutes will be played by LeBron, who used this game as yet another reminder of his exceptional versatility and basketball I.Q. To make this positional shift just 48 hours before turning 37 years old, nineteen seasons in, is legitimately pretty amazing. Next, it's LeBron's controversial (and very irresponsible) COVID/Spiderman meme, and took a listener email about Fizdale and Frank Vogel. EPISODE OVERVIEW There are a million quotes about how important it is to fail. “Fail your way to the top”, “Fail and fail often”, “Failure is not the opposite of success, it is part of success.” All of these are true, but my favorite is from Michael Jordan, “I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.” If you look at the stats for most MISSED shots in NBA history, MJ is #13. Other notable legends are, 1 Kobe Bryant, 4 LeBron James, 9 Carmelo Anthony, and 13 Allen Iverson. So, it's safe to say failure is needed. The subtitle for today's lesson is “Dumber and dumber get richer.” And it's perfect! After today's episode, you will look at failure a lot differently and realized you're actually closer to success than you might think. Let's break it down!

So 11 games in, Lakers fans (and Lakers coaches, Lakers players and Lakers management) are learning a lot about what it means to be a team featuring Russell Westbrook. The extremes are striking, particularly now while he's not playing particularly well in the aggregate. Is it something people were totally prepared for? How is it impacting the way the Lakers play? And perhaps most importantly, when it's all said and done, how does Westbrook's presence impact the effectiveness of LeBron James and Anthony Davis as a pairing? Because for the last two seasons, there has been an assumption that the combination of Davis and James, if healthy and playing at their top level, automatically makes the Lakers strong title contenders, almost independent of what surrounds them. Given LeBron's new struggles with health, is that still true? And critically, does the addition of Westbrook enhance that partnership? Does it detract? We're a long ways away from finding out, but the answer will be critical to the team's success. Finally, it's awfully early to declare anyone the winner of a season-long award... unless you're talking about Sixth Man of the Year, because if Carmelo Anthony does anything kinda like what he's done for the first 11 games over the final 71, it's a wrap. Because nobody is taking that trophy from him - the story is just too good. And to wrap things up... It's the Morris Twins vs. the Jokic Brothers. Choose your fighters. HOSTS; Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Westbrook Experience. What's it been like to watch? What impact does it have on his teammates, and the process of learning to play with him? SEGMENT 2: Is LeBron and AD still enough? Where are the Lakers set to improve around them? SEGMENT 3: Carmelo as the (very) early frontrunner for 6MOY. After Saturday's nakedly dispirited and lethargic loss to the Trail Blazers in Portland, the Lakers desperately needed to get themselves back in the win column Monday against Charlotte, even without LeBron James (among others). But just as importantly, they needed to just compete again, regardless of the results. As it turned out, both directives happened. The night wasn't especially pretty or composed, and required overtime, but at the end of the day, this 126-123 win offered reassurance that these Lakers aren't completely down on themselves. There was a superstar performance from Anthony Davis (29 points, 12 rebounds, five blocks), who played through a sprained thumb and the lingering effects of a stomach bug. (Dude threw up again during the game.) Carmelo Anthony continues to scorch the nets at Staples Center, putting up 29 points and drilling SEVEN shots from distance. And before getting ejected on a sketchy flagrant-2 call, Rajon Rondo did some brilliant play-making off the bench, setting up basket after basket for Davis. There are still *plenty* of issues to fix, and against opponents better than the slumping Hornets, the Lakers' effort likely wouldn't have been enough. But for the time being, the bleeding has been stopped, and that was extremely important. Hosts: Andy and Brian and Kamenetzky SEGMENT ONE: A huge, superstar performance from Anthony Davis. SEGMENT TWO: Safe to say, the Lakers would be lost without Melo. SEGMENT THREE: Some health updates on LeBron James and Talen Horton-Tucker, plus thoughts on Rajon Rondo's "break in case of emergency" importance on this team. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! So... Thursday was a bit of a bummer. The news broke mid-day that LeBron James would be at least a week thanks to an abdominal strain suffered Tuesday against Houston. Anthony Davis sprained his thumb in the first half against Oklahoma City, and while he finished the game he declared himself questionable for Saturday in Portland. Oh, and the Lakers lost to the Thunder. Again. But other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you enjoy your Thursday?  So lots to unpack on Friday's episode. It starts with another loss to OKC. So what went wrong this time? It wasn't because the Lakers, who built a 19-point lead Thursday and gave that one up (like the 26-point advantage they had last week in Oklahoma), stopped playing hard. So does that make it better or worse? What can be accomplished while LeBron is on the sidelines? What if Davis joins him? Can they start to patch things up while so many important members of the rotation float in and out of the lineup? And what does it mean for the Lakers that James has to be treated so carefully now? Finally, Mike Richman, host of Locked On Blazers, joins the show to preview Saturday's game in Portland. What's ailing the Blazers and Damian Lillard? Do the Lakers get a break, catching them at a down time? And how surprised is Richman at the success Carmelo Anthony is having thus far? The Lakers are coming off a win where they held Houston to 85 points. Granted, the Rockets are a godawful team, with about six months of collective NBA experience between the players, but that's still a very low score. Is this a sign of the Lakers starting to drill down on Frank Vogel's defensive principles? Without getting ahead of ourselves... perhaps. Russell Westbrook talked after Monday's practice pretty candidly about how he needs to adjust some past habits of gambling and going for steals, and play within a more structured defensive scheme. Westbrook isn't known (rightly) as a particularly good defender, and correcting bad habits isn't simple, especially for superstars used to getting their way, but trying to is the first step. And an important one, since this team isn't blessed with enough plus defenders where guys can get away with doing their own thing. Along these lines, Avery Bradley's minutes have been steadily rising, which wasn't necessarily expected when he signed a late preseason non-guaranteed deal. But perhaps it should have been, because Vogel loves Bradley, and Bradley is a very conscientious, determined defender. It doesn't feel coincidental that he's starting to play more, nor does it feel as certain that his stay with the team will be short. If he's a permanent part of the rotation, particularly once guys like Trevor Ariza, Talen Horton-Tucker and Kendrick Nunn return, what will that mean for the divvying of minutes? For that matter, do we imagine him as a permanent part of a small ball starting lineup like Vogel ran out Sunday? Finally, Carmelo Anthony is thriving as a sixth man, but takes exception with a narrative where it's surprising that he'd accept this role. Does he have a point? The Lakers are now above .500 after a 95-85 win over a seriously hapless Houston Rockets squad, and by flipping their typical script. For once, it was their defense that was most reliable, while the offense was spotty. Granted, it snuck up on Brian that the Lakers' offense has been so effective in the first place, but frankly, given the defense the front office sacrificed this offseason to improve the scoring, it ought to be better. Take away a penchant for awful turnovers, like the Lakers actually did on Sunday, and for the most part, that's been the case. But how much was the improved defense indicative of better execution vs. the fortune of a terrible opponent? It's hard to say. But similar to Carmelo Anthony's four block/two steal night, which isn't likely to be repeated anytime soon, as long as the Lakers can regularly do something in between tonight and their most pathetic, at least some issues can be fixed until the return of potentially helpful folks like Trevor Ariza, Talen Horton-Tucker and Kendrick Nunn. (This is another area where if the Lakers stopped turning the ball over so much, it would help a lot.) Finally, Frank Vogel changed the starting lineup, sliding Anthony Davis to center and putting Avery Bradley into the backcourt alongside Russell Westbrook. The decision was sparked in part by Dwight Howard's unavailability (neck stiffness), so they needed DeAndre Jordan as a backup center option. But it was something Vogel had considered anyway, and the Rockets were a good match for this experiment. Time will tell how often Vogel keeps this look, but either way, it felt like a sign of more minutes to come for Bradley.
