What happens when athletes decide to act? And what doesn't happen? Wesley Morris and Bill Simmons, sportswriter and founder of The Ringer, break down the history of athletes in movies. They start with Jackie Robinson playing himself in 1950, discuss the Blaxpoitation-era stars and make their way to the '90s, from “He Got Game” (where Ray Allen turns in a solid performance opposite Denzel Washington, directed by Spike Lee) to “Space Jam” (the less said, the better). They trace this phenomenon all the way to Dwayne Johnson, a.k.a. The Rock, arguably the most successful athlete-turned-actor of all time — who seems to be playing the long game. Then, they imagine a new kind of renaissance for the sports movie.

We are excited to bring you this episode of the #squarepizzapod. To kick off year 3, Greg is in conversation with Tyrone "Muggsy" Bogues. He is also known as the Godfather of Smallball. He played 14 seasons in the NBA, with 10 of those being with our beloved Charlotte Hornets. One fun fact about Muggsy is that he was a wrestler in high school and how that sport influenced his basketball career. In this episode:Muggsy's reflection on spending 14 seasons in the NBAStories and insights covered in his new memoirThe work of the Muggsy Bogues Family FoundationHis first love in sports (hint: not basketball)Why square pizza reminds him both of UNC basketball and cheese...Muggsy Bogues is vital to the NBA that he transcends the game itself, as seen by how the game is now played. We hope you guys enjoy this episode! Bio:Tyrone "Muggsy" Bogues born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland played for the legendary high school team, the Dunbar Poets who won 59 consecutive games and ranked as one of the top high school teams in the United States. Bogues went on to graduate from Wake Forest where the school later retired his jersey number. Muggsy was selected 12th in the first round of the NBA draft by the Washington Bullets. He retired from the NBA ranking 16th among all-time assist leaders. He gained plenty of attention with his unique ball-handling skills; he could maintain a legal dribble so close to the ground that his knuckles dragged on the floor and with his high jumper range of 44-inch leaps on the court. Throughout his career, he stayed busy starting in commercials and major productions like Space Jam, Eddie, and Curb Your Enthusiasm. Muggsy retired from professional play ranking at number 16 among all-time assist leaders in the NBA and still remains the shortest player in history. Since leaving the NBA, Muggsy has worked with his nonprofit the Muggsy Bogues Family Foundation based in Charlotte, NC where he resides with his family. Muggsy is also an Ambassador for the NBA traveling the world educating youth. www.boguesfoundation.org Support the show (http://Scherm.co)

Show notes posted at https://blog.priceplow.com/podcast/dan-lourenco-ryan-hughes-ghost-tmnt-collabs-066 - Dan Lourenço and Ryan Hughes of Ghost invite Team PricePlow to Chicago to launch the TMNT Collab, and talk about the future of collabs on the PricePlow Podcast On April 18, 2022, Team PricePlow flew into Chicago, IL to visit the Ghost Lifestyle headquarters, celebrating the Ghost Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles collaboration launch. After meeting up with CEO Dan Lourenço, CMO Ryan Hughes, and the rest of the team, we received a tour, then got down to business. You can see much of our trip in the incredible Building The Brand episode (S8:E27) named "Turtle Power", where we got to participate in "mailtime", doming a scoop (or two) of the new OOZE flavor, and celebrating in this launch. But most importantly, our podcast with Dan and Ryan, where we talk about branding, the future of collabs, Ghost Energy's insane success, and where Ghost goes from here. Detailed show notes are below, and you can find the episode on our audio feeds or watch on YouTube: Video: PricePlow Visits the Ghost HQ with Dan and Ryan https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZmgEIiNDjDw Audio Version Subscribe to the PricePlow Podcast on Your Favorite Service iTunesSpotify Google PodcastsSoundCloud 1:00 - The official announcement of Ghost's collaboration with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Dan comments that there were some frustrating leaks, but when was the last time people were so excited about a sports nutrition release that they couldn't wait to leak it? Ghost is partnering with the legendary Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in four supplements with a new OOZE flavor! "It's annoying but humbling" says Dan, and Ryan comments that this was the entire point of the Ghost brand - to make things exciting again. 2:15 - Ghost is now strategic about when they release collaborations. They don't just want to trot everything under the sun. GNC is involved in this release in a few ways (and their HQ is nearby some incredible tacos). Dan and Ryan were at the hotel, and being silly, just decided "We should do a Turtles collab" and fired off an email to Nickelodeon at 1am. 4:10 - Mike backs things up and explains the entire collaboration - four different supplements, a new one in Ghost Gamer Non-Stim, and a new flavor named OOZE. 4:45 - In the late 80s and early 90s, Mike explains that the Ninja Turtles were everything. They sold over a billion dollars worth of action figures (in 1990s money)! 5:00 - Dan's first exposure to the Ninja Turtles were the legendary Konami video game. 5:45 - Dan loves to force that nostalgia on the younger folks in the office. Whether it's Sour Patch Kids and Swedish Fish, Oreos and Chips Ahoy, Space Jam, Ninja Turtles... they like to have a lot of fun with what they do. Of the Space Jam Collabs, Ghost Legend's Monstars formula is the further derivation from the original 6:15 - It's become an easier story to tell to new partners. When pitching a new idea to a potential partner, Ghost already has social proof. They pitch their idea, and can essentially ask "Are you guys in or out?" -- and then they get feedback and dial things in. 7:30 - Any content with licensed products needs to be extremely well planned and curated - you can't always have humans or objects next to the cartoons... but Space Jam could do that. Turtles didn't have that, because that's not how the brand ever worked. 8:30 - Which Ninja Turtle are you? Dan, Ben, and Mike all gravitated towards Donatello as a kid, and Ryan liked Michaelangelo -- none of this is not surprising. As a side note, if we had to move things in person now, we'd make Ben into Raphael and Dan into Leonardo. 9:15 - Dan says they picked the most relevant product to each character: Leonardo - the Leader - Ghost Legend Michaelangelo - the fun-loving one - Ghost Gamer Raphael - The fittest - Ghost Pump Donatello - The quieter,

Ernest also talks about what it's like for him to collaborate with some of the biggest stars in music, and he really wants to work with John Mayer because of how much he respects him. This podcast covers New Girl Season 3, Episode 2, Nerd, which originally aired on September 24, 2013 and was written by Kay Cannon and directed by Fred Goss. Here's a quick recap of the episode:Jess doesn't fit in with the teachers at her new school so Nick comes to the rescue! Schmidt spends the episode trying to balance his relationship with Cece and Elizabeth while his coworker Beth tries to sabotage it and Winston watches Daisy's cat, Ferguson. We discuss Pop Culture References such as:Mad Men / Don Draper / Peggy [Olson] / Don Draper's Office - When Schmidt is showing Elizabeth his office, he comments that it is a ⅔ replica of Don Draper's office from the television show Mad Men and he fantasized about Elizabeth being his “sexy Peggy”. Additional Pop Culture References such as:“I Believe I Can Fly” - R. Kelly - When the guys needed to wake Jess up to go to work, they sang her the song “I Believe I Can Fly”, which is a 1996 song written and performed by American singer R. Kelly. The song was originally from the soundtrack to the 1996 film Space Jam.James Taylor - Nick told Jess not to worry because she's “Nick Miller's girl now. [She's] my old lady,” to which Jess thought he was talking like a James Taylor song. James Vernon Taylor is an American singer, songwriter, and musician, who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000 and has won six Grammy Awards. He is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, having sold more than 100 million records worldwide. “What's Up?” - 4 Non Blondes - When Jess is standing on the toilet while drunk, she is singing the song “What's Up?” This song was released as the second single from American Rock group, 4 Non Blondes', 1992 debut album, Bigger, Better, Faster, More!. It reached number 14 on the US Billboard Hot 100 but was number one in many other countries. From San Francisco, 4 Non Blondes were active from 1989 to 1994 and “What's Up?” was their most popular song. On our new section of our podcast called “Most Likely To” we discussed who we think would be most likely to be like Beth, steal their partner's cat, commit a crime to fit in, and sneak into their boss's hot tub but not get caught. We also covered when Schmidt went to go see Cece to uninvite her from his work party as our “Schmidtism” this episode. For “Not in the 2020s” we highlighted the way Elizabeth spoke about people from Hong Kong and Dr. Foster forcing Nick and Jess into his hot tub. Our “Yes in the 2020s” included Winston standing up for himself and Nick helping Jess get new friends. We also explored the careers of Dreama Walker (Molly), Mark Proksch (Dan), and Angela Kinsey (Rose), the guest stars of the episode. We also mentioned this article about Mark pranking the news as a "yo-yo master".Also in this episode were the following guest stars who we do not discuss in the podcast: Merritt Wever (Elizabeth - Previously discussed in S2E22), Eva Amurri (Beth - Previously discussed in S1E8), Curtis Armstrong (Dr. Foster - Previously discussed in S2E24), Brenda Song (Daisy - Previously discussed in S2E23), Grace Holley (Hot Girl), Sergio Cilli (Director), Jimmy Kaplanges (Jimmy), and Erika Stillwater (Hot Girl #2).We didn't find the bear this episode but we did discuss how Schmidt being a Sagittarius but having a January birthday didn't match and an AV club article that mentioned the belief that less lines were ad-libbed in this season. While not discussed in the podcast, we noted other references in this episode including:Shorty - This episode Schmidt tried to call Cece “shorty” in public. Shawty, shorty, or shortie is an American slang term used as a term of endearment for an attractive woman or a girlfriend, that was particularly popular in hip hop from the 2000s. Hacky Sack - In a flashback we see that Nick used to be popular as he was good at the game Hacky Sack. "Hacky Sack" is the name of a brand of footbag popular in the 1970s, which has since become a generic trademark. A footbag is a small, round bag usually filled with plastic pellets or sand, which is kicked into the air as part of a competitive game. This episode got a 7/10 rating from Kritika and an 8.5/10 from Kelly and we both had the same favorite character: Nick! Thanks for listening and stay tuned for Episode 3!Music: "Hotshot” by scottholmesmusic.comFollow us on Twitter, Instagram or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org!Website: https://smallscreenchatter.com/

With the BAFTAs just gone and the Oscars approaching, there's one prize that's got everyone talking this awards season. Thankfully, Adam is on hand to reveal the four finalists for this year's Golden Stauner award, recognising Scottish football's most handsome figures. Joining him at the ceremony are journalist and author Neil Drysdale as well as comedian and actor Stuart McPherson. Neil talks about the two players Jim Goodwin should be building his Aberdeen side around, why Scotland's 1978 World Cup might not be our worst, being the target of a Jimmy Nicholl grudge, one of Pittodrie's most memorable nights, what he learned from writing a Walter Smith biography, a bad night for Billy Connolly in Aberdeen, the short-lived Stephen Glass and Scott Brown era, covering France '98 and the Aberdeenshire footballer who played a role in Juventus' first league title. Stuart discusses his dream Efe Ambrose scenario, Dunfermline memories, a Coronation Street star's East End Park cameo, existential heckling, the Little Mix memory he shares with Scott Brown, performing stand-up, acting in and writing for Scot Squad, the legacy of Peep Show, Danny Dyer's football gaffes, an unusual Harry Potter mention on his CV and his idea for a Scottish football version of Space Jam. Adam enlists his guests to help him debunk a myth involving Willie Collum, puts questions to them from Twitter and challenges them to identify a truly blood-curdling Scottish football shriek. An Emmy Award-winning composer and pianist, Kris Bowers has mastered the art of translating emotion to sound. From Bridgerton to Space Jam, Green Book, and most recently, King Richard, the Juilliard-educated pianist has established himself at the forefront of Hollywood's emerging generation of genre-defying composers. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Kris first made a name for himself in 2011, when he won the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. The win earned him a record deal with Concord Jazz, who later released his debut album, Heroes+Misfits, which opened at number one on the iTunes jazz chart in 2014. Since then, he's gone on to compose for projects that include Kobe Bryant's Muse, Ava DuVernay's When They See Us, Netflix's Dear White People, and Shonda Rhimes' Inventing Anna. In addition to his work as a composer for TV and film, Kris has recorded and performed with artists such as Q-Tip, Aretha Franklin, Ludacris, Christian Rich, Jay-Z, and Kanye West. In this episode of Masters of Storytelling, Maya talks to Kris about his craft as a composer, how he views jazz as a way of life, and the visceral experience of tying sound to story. Many thanks to Kris Bowers for providing music for this episode: 0:00 — "What's Stopping Us" from Netflix's 'Dear White People' 06:35 — "Bed-Stuy Princess / No System" from "Monsters and Men" 17:55 — "Hitchhiking" 22:01 — End Credits from "Monsters and Men" 33:58 — "In Loving Memory" from "Monsters and Men" 42:40 — "What's Stopping Us" from Netflix's 'Dear White People' For more information about Kris, visit: www.krisbowers.com For more information about BRC, visit: www.brcweb.com Follow BRC on LinkedIn: https://bit.ly/3CofmWY Follow BRC on Instagram: https://bit.ly/3a9OJsu

Tarlin and Mike are back, talking solace in basketball this time on the heels of the NBA All-Star weekend in Cleveland. We reminisce over All-Star Weekends from times gone by, including 1988 and 1992 before fast-forwarding back to the present to talk about a dismal Slam Dunk Contest, the 3 Point Shooting Contest, and the display put on by Stephen Curry during the actual All-Star Game on Sunday. In front of most of the 76 Greatest Players of all time and despite those that couldn't make it, Steph showed to be the star among stars. And the NBA is being transformed in the process. We look for lessons in the Top 75 and in ESPN's as the wet jump shot may be replacing the stunning dunk as the signature move in the NBA today. We discuss all of this, riff on variations of the screenplay for Space Jam 3, and even propose five modern players on the Mount Rushmore of the modern game. Listen in. You might hear some surprises. Short Hops & Tall Tales — Brandon and Noah are back with a fun Hall of Fame twist! They lead off with a discussion about the Veterans Committee Inductees (and get angry for Dick Allen), and reflect on several players that they kind of already assumed were in the Hall of Fame already. Then, rather than rehash the same Hall ballot discussion again, they start up their own Short Hops Hall, celebrating the most decorated and iconic players in baseball film. Trimming a ballot of 18 to 5 inductees leads to heated debate, and multiple celebrity impressions. Tune in now for one of the funniest episodes of the year! Guess who's back (again)?! In this episode we review 2021's Space Jam starring LeBron James. We discuss our long lay-off, LeBron's hair, Don Cheadle, Bigen budgets and weight loss.
