Back in June, Christie & Izzy sat down to pass the mic to Anya Randall Nebel. At the height of the Black Lives Matter protests and COVID-19, Anya carefully traces her family's journey through generations of amazing Black women. From Anya's Grandmother's roots as a domestic worker in Ellicot City, Maryland, to finding her own joy, freedom, and connection in music & theatre, to mothering a daughter through the protests, police violence, and the uncertainty of 2020 - this episode is packed with the kind of richness that only an incredible storyteller like Anya could bring. ANYA RANDALL NEBEL’s 40-year career as a singer, actor, director and producer, has taken her on many successful national and international tours. She was last seen at Spotlighters Theatre in their production of Love Letters. Shortly after, Ms. Nebel appeared in the critically-acclaimed and Helen Hayes recommended, Lady Day in the Anacostia Playhouse. Ms. Nebel, having recently opened her directorial debut at the DC Fringe Festival with Soul Redeemer, also holds a 2017 Bachelor’s Degree in Music Production and Engineering from the Berklee School of Music. Anya is a three-time Honors Recital soloist at Carnegie Hall, and is the premier founding member of Winters Lane Productions, a company that teaches and mentors young performers in the business of theatre. Currently, Anya is the Managing Director of LaTIDo, DC's premiere musical theatre cabaret and spoken word series. Tune in to Ms.Nebel’s solo album and podcast, Brown Girl Loves Classics, now available to stream on major podcast platforms. It’s not about education, it’s about enlightenment.” This week we’re passing the mic to Kathy Gordon and her teenage daughters, Ava and Giulia. From Kathy's upbringing in a diverse neighborhood in Upper Manhattan, to her experiences navigating whiteness as a Black mother in some of NYC's most prestigious private schools, the Gordon women have a lot to say about this moment in history. Kathy is a 53-year old NYC native and Founder of The Book Hook, a book marketing, graphic design and promotion company operating in traditional and digital media. Formerly the dedicated director of Brand Development for Harper Collins, Kathy has developed campaigns for bestselling authors from Stephen King to Hillary Clinton, as well as branding alliances for numerous TV series and feature films. On this episode, your two favorite Capricorns unpack their relationship with Joe B. and BDR - their dads. Christie’s dad passed on unexpectedly shortly after FWSS launched, so it brings her so much comfort to unpack all the quirks that made BDR the great man he was (and still is in her heart). As Izzy described “Joe B.” (as he is called by EVERYONE), she reflects on all of the qualities that make him the most supportive and reliable man she knows. Both of these men share so many qualities - admiration from their daughters being at the top of the list of commonalities. Like what you hear?
